So The Good, the Bad and the Ugly has this scene that opens with Blondie petting a small kitten who’s in his hat. Best part of the movie, obviously, along with all the other best parts. He says, “Every gun makes its own tune… and it’s perfect timing, large one,” then gently puts his hat down out of frame with the kitten in it and stands up to go find Tuco. The kitten is not seen or mentioned again.

This immediately makes this antihero 500% more charming, because 1) likes kittens, 2) talks to the kitten, 3) calls the tiny kitten ‘large one’. But also, the kitten is necessary! The audience is not going to connect the fact Tuco shot a gun in the previous scene to Blondie suddenly knowing where to find him without this line to indicate he recognizes the sound of Tuco’s particular gun. But at the time Blondie is with Angel Eyes and his men - he’s not going to just go explaining that to them, when the reason he wants to find Tuco is he wants his help to kill them. And Blondie is decidedly not a talking to himself kind of guy. So how do we convey this information to the audience? Put a random stray kitten in his hat, so that he can say it to the kitten. Excellent. I have no notes.
