watched a show tonight called barbershop which was about various loosely connected stories of black men in barbershops ranging from zimbabwe, to uganda, to nigeria, to south africa, and then right up to london and was written over a span of nine years, as the writer travelled through west african countries and to south africa to find a way to talk about his heritage

and it was pretty awesome, ranged from discussing racism, colonialism and cross-generational politics (esp as it pertains to younger generations who grew up in london vs older generations who left their countries and settled in london), and also touched on homophobia and gender-expectations for black, african men (was also one jamaican dude who was mostly staying the hell oooout of the drama)

obvious downside was no women, although was pleasantly surprised to see that when the conversation moved in the direction of women (whether because of talking about their mothers, daughters, wives, friends, girlfriends) it did discuss aspects of misogynoir, as well as talking about them with respect, although obviously I’m not in the position to say how well it did so. 

the storylines were also both very sad and very happy, with a general air of hope for the future, and I learned a lot.
