Excerpt from this story from Mother Jones:
Americans of a certain age tend to throw around the term “Orwellian” willy-nilly. But the expression really suits in describing the behavior of our felonious, twice-impeached president-elect.
In George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, a dictatorship represented by the all-powerful “Big Brother” dictates the reality its citizens must adhere to, however topsy-turvy. Official slogans include “ignorance is strength,” “freedom is slavery,” and “war is peace.”
In this context, another slogan comes to mind: “Drain the swamp.”
Trump didn’t invent this populist expression, but he made it a centerpiece of his first campaign—a vow to rid DC of the toxic influence of special interest money, lobbyists, etc. Of course, politicians of both parties have long railed, often without much credibility, against special interests in Washington, and the US Supreme Court’s trashing of campaign finance safeguards has indeed created a cesspool of oligarchic influence in DC that crosses party lines.
It’s not the slogan itself that’s Orwellian. The Orwellian part is Trump’s evocation of the Swamp as he appoints foxes to guard the federal henhouse yet again. It’s a trolling of the libs, but a trolling with potentially dire consequences—and a signal that our government is for sale, more openly now than ever.
Exhibit A: Trump’s selection of Chris Wright, the CEO of a Denver fracking services company called Liberty Energy, for the position of energy secretary. Wright has no government experience and certainly no experience related to the nuclear weapons whose oversight is a critical part of DOE’s role.
Meanwhile, as typical of Trump’s cabinet picks to date, Wright’s other qualifications for the job are—to use Orwellian “Newspeak”—doubleplusungood.
It has escaped nobody’s notice that Trump’s top consideration in doling out key positions is loyalty to the boss. For attorney general, he chose Matt Gaetz, an inexperienced lawyer (but fierce loyalist) who has been accused of sexual impropriety—no charges were ever filed—and is notorious for allegedly foisting upon House colleagues videos of women he’s bedded. For his director of national intelligence, Trump picked Tulsi Gabbard, a former congresswoman my colleague Dan Friedman describes as a “uniquely bad choice.” Namely, she lacks intelligence experience and is so in sync with Vladimir Putin’s propaganda machine that her nomination was even celebrated on Russian television. To oversee White House communications, he picked a bomb-thrower who cut his teeth at UFC. For Health, he chose Robert Kennedy Jr., a man with no academic expertise in the areas he would oversee, and whose views and priorities are far from the mainstream, as my colleague David Corn has reported. (In this administration, apparently, ignorance is indeed strength.)
Wright, too, is a loyalist, but this pick feels distinctly transactional—Swamplike. Trump, after all, met multiple times during his campaign with top fossil-fuel CEOs, promising that, if they gave him money and helped him get elected, they would be richly rewarded. Wright, who denies the climate crisis and completely dismisses the US clean energy transition—which is weird, because it is well under way, despite the fossil fuel industry’s attempts to thwart it—is the industry’s reward. As was Trump’s choice for Interior, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgham, who is apparently champing at the bit to expand drilling on federal land.
The New York Times reports that Wright’s wife, Liz, co-hosted a Trump fund-raiser in Montana, and that the couple donated a total of $350,000 to a Trump campaign committee. Most notably, Wright was the preferred choice of oil billionaire Harold Hamm, a major Trump donor and co-host of gatherings where candidate Trump wooed oil executives with what sounded suspiciously like a pay-to-play pitch.

if you’re hearing CANT STOP by RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS playing, you have to know ELIJAH WEBER (HE/HIM; CISMALE) is near by! the THIRTY FIVE year old FORMER UFC FIGHTER, CURRENT GYM TRAINER has been in denver for, like, SEVEN YEARS. they’re known to be quite DESTRUCTIVE, but being CHARMING seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble CHAD MICHAEL DAVIS. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those THE SOUND OF A PUNCHING BAG BEING HIT, THE DINGING BELL OF A WINNING FIGHT AND BLOODIED UP KNUCKLES vibes. and maybe ill get my chance if i hang out around the WASHINGTON PARK DISTRICT long enough!
DEATH TW
THE BASICS:
full name: elijah anthony weber
birthdate, zodiac sign: june 2nd / gemini
sexuality: pansexual
occupation: trainer at swolemates
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS:
between the choices of fight or flight, elijah had always been inclined to choose the fight method. he had that mindset imposed on him from a young age between his older brothers and his father, their problems were very rarely solved with words. his mother passed away when he was very young , so from there on it was just his father and his brothers in his life. they never really spoke of his mothers death. they’d go to her gravesite occasionally but other than that,, they avoided that subject at all Costs. feelings??? emotions???? not in the weber household
that wasn’t to say that elijah’s father didn’t care for him, because he did the best he could for a single father raising three boys on his own. of course, they had help from other family members but for as long as he could remember, it had just been the four of them. they decided to avoid talking about anything negative, at least the serious things. however, his brothers were a few years older than he was and the older that elijah became, the more confusing his emotions had started to become. he was feeling sadness, missing something that he wasn’t quite sure how to place.
these feelings really didn’t start to hit him until he a junior in high school, causing him to begin to act out in a way that surprised even him. he found himself getting into fights more often than not, figuring the best way to get through his problems was with his fists. it wasn’t the right way to go, but he wouldn’t learn that until quite a few years later. his unknown built up frustrations and anger had even poured into he and a few friends creating a secret fight club of sorts. eventually, what started out to be a little group to get out their problems turned into so much more than that. a few months into it, money soon became involved and there were bets placed on who was going to win and he even got some of the contributions. not only was he being able to find a way to get everything out, but he was also somehow getting paid for it???? he was sold on that.
until,, of course it was found out that what they were doing was Very Illegal and eventually they had gotten caught. it was mostly just a slap on the wrist, for them to not do it again but eljah still needed that outlet. he was a few months out of high school, struggling to find something that will keep him at least somewhat content with his life. then, an opportunity came about, something that he had heard about: MMA fighting. it was exactly what he had been searching for, and was the answer to the difficulties he had been facing. he put his whole life into MMA, not taking very long until he was able to become a UFC fighter at the age of twenty one, and a pretty great one at that.
with being in the UFC organization, it was everything that elijah had hoped it would be, but a lot of the times he found himself getting too lost in the actual matches. getting carried away, too impulsive in his actions and ending up badly in one way or another. most of the time, he was able to shrug these off but then came a night in his mid twenties when elijah was in his prime, practically on top of the world. until one night, he was participating in a highly anticipated fight, for a competition of sorts and that seemed to get to his head a bit too much. in the middle of the fight, his arm had gotten twisted behind his back in a rather uncomfortable position but never being one to back down from a fight and give in, elijah persisted in his efforts and eventually won. but soon learned that might not have been the best idea, considering that fight had left him with a slightly fractured arm. he felt the pain, but just shrugged it off as just associated with the job, it felt like his body was hurting more times than not.
however, as the week went on, it seemed like the pain was only getting worse to the point where he could barely move his arm. that’s when he finally decided to break down and get it checked out and was told that he had gotten a compound break in his arm, after continuing to prepare for other fights and participating in small fights. he was instructed to go to rehab for the injury and to hope that he could still manage to function. but as the rehab went on and the tests started to come back only slightly better, elijah was soon given the news that he couldn’t fight anymore, that if he continued it would ruin his arm completely and that was something that the doctors definitely hadn’t wanted at all.
hearing that was a bit of a shock to elijah, who had built a whole career out of UFC fighting, it was hard to imagine doing anything other than that. he spiraled a bit, having difficulties trying to come to terms with it and wanting nothing than to deal with this by doing the things he was told that he couldn’t. that was when elijah decided it was time for a change in scenery, heading back home to get a new outlook and try to move on, maybe even stop relying on the tricks his father and brothers had all relied on to deal with their problems. even then, he could maybe even help the people who were in the same boat as him. once he got himself situated, elijah decided that maybe a good idea would be to start training, so he became a trainer at the gym. helping men and women alike who were just looking to make a change - just like he was.
of course , his own issues didn’t stop there - why would they ? after a few months back home , elijah felt like he could start fighting again , in his own way. he quickly learned , however, that indeed was not the case. after messing up his hand pretty good once again. so with his tail between his leg, he decided to go back to the town that he grew up in. so far it had been good for him. but what elijah had yet to realize was that he needed the chaos, he needed the destruction. and once that was gone and he was back in his home town of denver, things only seemed to get worse for him. but after seven years back home, not even elijah has realized what he’s doing to the those around him.
POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS:
exes that ended on not so great terms , mans is very bad at feelings and emotions /:
people he trains / works out with at the gym
friends that he maintained from high school
a high school sweetheart
