Some talk on Barca vs Benfica specifically because I watched both legs and I'm sick, so I have nothing better to do.
Okay, I lied. I only watched the second half of the first leg. I had practice during the first half, and we were all going insane because our phones started going off with notifications for Cubarsi's red card 😭 All I have to say is that I got fucking war flash backs. But to be fair, it was a tactical foul of denying a clear goal scoring opportunity and no one was hurt, so that's something.
Raphiñha pulled throughout as always. When everyone and their mother is watching, he always fucking does it. 4 g/a across two legs? And 3 of them were non penalty goals. Just give him the Ballond'or, I'm tired. Also, he has broken then all time UCL scoring record for a Brazilian player with 11 goals in a single campaign, and he is still in the quarterfinals. I'm just putting it out there, the all time record is 17 by Cristiano fucking Ronaldo.
Ramadan Yamal unlocked his shooting. It's over for you bitches. Youngest player to score and assist in a UCL game. He can not be stopped. Also, both the goal and the assist were pure class. He finessed a top right corner from outside the box. Trubin had no chance. Not to mention, it was his goal that gave Barca the lead. And a defense splitting assist to Raphiñha. He can't be 17.
Szczęsny had an absolute masterclass in the first leg. The Benfica crowd obviously couldn't predict that the smoke from their pyrotechnics would bring out prime Szczęsny. 8 saves is actually insane. Just give this man a pack of Marlboro Reds and never doubt him ever again. Thinking back, he probably told Cubarsi to get the red to buy him a pack and that he's got it or someone like that.
Pedro González López... What is there to say about this man. He got motm in both legs, without any g/a. That speaks for itself honestly, but he gave the first one to Szczęsny and said to the media that the second one should have gone to either Raphiñha or Lamine. Both the best midfielder in the world and also humble and understanding that he is part of a team. Real talk though, fully fit Pedri is scary to go up against. Xavi's vision, Iñesta's creativity and Busquets' ball keeping ability in one man and he is still only 22. Barca and Spain have a really bright future.
An underrated hero that needs to be talked about more, in my opinion, Alejandro fucking Balde. The speed in that boy. He sprinted the entire length of the field and assisted Raphiñha. As a left back, his offensive plays are just ridiculous. The way he comes up and basically becomes a winger when Raphiñha cuts to the center shows just how much he has improved offensively. And of course, he would not start at left back if his defense was not elite. So we are casually witnessing an extremely well-rounded player being born. Mind you, he is 21.
Frenkie and Olmo also deserve their flowers. The triangle in the midfield is absolutely deadly. They dictate the tempo of the game. They could just pass the ball between themselves and the other team would have virtually no chance of scoring.
And as always, thank you, Hansi Flick, for whatever it is you did to this team because they look Treble ready.

ok here's my quick explainer of the new ucl format:
it starts with the league phase. in this phase all 36 teams play 8 fixtures, each against different teams. the league phase is seeded so that the teams are broken into 4 pots based mostly on uefa coefficient (the only exception is that last year's ucl winner is in pot 1, but this would have happened anyway as real madrid's coefficient is high enough). each team plays TWO teams from each pot (two of the best, two second tier, etc.). you cannot draw a team from the same country, and you can play max two teams from any other country.
during the league phase, teams will accumulate points based on wins and losses. at the end of all 8 matches, the TOP EIGHT will progress automatically to the round of 16. the NEXT SIXTEEN will play a two-legged playoff to determine the other 8 teams in the round of 16. the BOTTOM TWELVE are eliminated.
the playoffs and round of 16 are also seeded, so it DOES matter where you finish within the categories. there will be draws for each of these too however so it's not as simple as 9 plays 24. it's like 9 or 10 play 23 or 24 (or something like that, don't quote me on the exact numbers)
round of 16 through the final will work the same as usual, except without any additional draws. you will know your route to the final in february
so basically, the idea is that everyone is incentivized to win every match. there shouldn't be as many dead games where the winner of the group is already decided etc. so possibly higher stakes & more exciting. we will see!

A primer on the UEFA Champions League for the Ted Lasso fandom
In the finale, we’re told several times that Richmond have qualified for the Champions League. If you have only a very vague idea of what that means, this is the post for you.
WHAT IS IT?
The Champions League (UCL) is a club competition among top-league European clubs. It draws clubs from the top leagues of ALL* countries members of UEFA, the governing body of football associations in Europe. (*All countries except Liechtenstein and, currently, Russia)
WHEN IS IT?
The UCL runs alongside the regular season, from September to June. This means that clubs who compete in it play UCL matches on top of regular Premier League matches. Richmond weren’t “promoted” to the Champions League — they remain first and foremost a Premier League club. They also get to play with the rest of Europe’s cool kids.
UCL matches would be mid-week (Tuesday or Wednesday) every 3-ish weeks, and domestic league matches would usually be on weekends. YES this will mean that Richmond will be very busy next season.
WHICH CLUBS ARE IN IT?
The top 4 clubs in the Premier League automatically make it to the main competition for the NEXT round of the UCL. The path is a bit more complicated for most other countries but luckily it doesn’t apply here so we don’t need to go into that.
Richmond finished in second place in the League for the year 21/22 (season 3) so they’d play in the UCL for the 22/23 season. This doesn’t mean they are guranteed to still play in the UCL in the 23/24 season if they can’t end the 22/23 Prem in the Top 4. They need to REMAIN a top national club to qualify again for the Champions League.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
GROUP STAGE: a round-robin round where 32 teams are divided in 8 groups of 4. Each team in each group plays the other teams in the group twice, once at home (hosting) once away (being hosted) for a total of SIX matches. The top TWO sides in each group advance to the knockout round. This stage takes place from August to December. Richmond would enter directly from this round.
KNOCKOUT ROUND: this round is in double-legged format—this means that each paired sides play each other TWICE, once at home and once away. The round winner is decided by goal difference, so a side can advance to the next round if they lose one of the two matches, provide they win the other by a larger goal difference. If both legs are a draw, there can be extra time and/or a penalty shootout.
In the round of 16 sides from the same country CAN’T play against each other, so for example Richmond couldn’t play Arsenal in that round. In the quarter-final (8 teams) and a semifinal (4 teams) rounds teams from the same country CAN draw each other, so that could happen.
For example, in the current season, AC Milan played Napoli in the quarter-final and then Inter Milan in the semifinals; all three teams are from Italy. The double-legged knockout round takes place from February to May.
FINAL: It’s in June. The two teams who remain standing after the semifinals only play each other ONCE. The location is appointed beforehand and it’s often neutral ground to both teams. The next UCL final will actually be this Saturday (June 10) Man City v. Inter Milan will play in Istanbul.
how many matches in a UCL season?
If you make it to the semifinals, it’s 6 in group stage + 6 in the 3 successive knockout rounds. This is 12 matches, of which 6 are away (and usually abroad) The final is the 13th match.
What does it mean to win the Champions League?
The UCL is considered the most prestigious club competition in the world. We see in in the show; Roy having won the UCL with Chelsea in 2012 comes up several times in S1, even though Chelsea also won the Premier League multiple times while Roy was there — but the Champions League is the one people bring up.
Winning the domestic league is obviously a big fucking deal, but winning the UCL is huge. Only a handful of top-league clubs have won it multiple times, and many big clubs have NEVER won it (including Man City, PSG, Arsenal and AS Roma) Then there’s Real Madrid who’ve won it FOURTEEN TIMES
EDIT: Man City have since won their first UCL trophy

I was too busy with irl things to post a UCL round of 16 predictions, but I'm proud to announce that I got them all but one. 😌
Liverpool just loses people money. 🙄
So yeah, I got Liverpool vs PSG wrong. I really wanted to laugh at Dembele but I can't lie, he played really fucking well. That man just despised Barca apparently because the difference is... stark. And this was probably the end of Salah's Ballond'or race. So it really was a win-win situation.
Aston Villa vs Club Brugge, I had Aston Villa. There was no shock there, Villa was just the better team, but Club Brugge making to the round of 16 is already crazy enough.
Arsenal vs PSV... Even though they are known UCL bottlers, I had them going through because, again, I think they are a better overall team.
Unfortunately, I got the Madrid derby right😞 I wanted Atletico to go through, but Real snached it in the penalties. I didn't watch the shootout because it was like 1 am here but even during over time, Atletico looked like the better team. Also missed penalty by Vini is crazy to me. But at least their draw streak ended.
Barca vs Benfica. I'm telling you Barca will go all the way this year. When they won the away game, I thought it was pretty much over for Benfica. Also, the graphic they put put with Raphiñha as "number one suspect" ATE. Gotta love unbiased social media teams.
BVB vs Lille was another one pretty clear to me. I was kinda shocked at the first draw. The second leg was close too, but regardless, BVB advanced.
Bayern vs Leverkusen... I saw chatter on Twitter about how leverkusen is getting by, even on CBS sports, but I never really bought it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Bayern is the least scary of the super teams, but I had then over Leverkusen. You expect way too much from Alonso.
Feyenoord vs Inter... Even though the Italian teams kinda bottled the round of 16 advancement I had them going through because their structure this year is absolutely ridiculous and they work like a fucking machine.

Bayern : we're leading the bundesliga, we're qualified in the quarter final of the ucl and we're still playing in the cup, I think it's the right time to fire Julian
Also Bayern: Leverkusen is leading the Bundesliga, we lost the first leg of the ucl round of 16 and we were eliminated of the cup after the second round, I think it's time to stand by TT side.
