Update: As of June 2023, "Ubirajara" has been repatriated to Brazil and awaits formal publication and naming by Brazilian paleontologists.
I wanted to draw some of the recently described dinosaurs in my Archovember style since they weren’t released when I did Archovember and I probably won’t be adding them to next year’s list but I still thought they were cool enough to make some art of them (and stickers)
First is the enantiornithine bird Falcatakely forsterae, a tiny lil bird from Cretaceous Madagascar with a big ol beak. I started off making it look like a pied crow, then realized that the skull would have only been 3 inches long, so I made it much slimmer and gave it some more “small jungle bird” type colors.
Second is Ubirajara jubatus, a small compsognathid that was (illegally) smuggled out of Brazil in 1995 and was just recently finally published. It was interesting because it had at least two long, stiff filamentous structures coming from its shoulders, similar to the Standardwing bird-of-paradise. It also had a mane of fuzzy proto-feathers running along it’s back. These features probably would normally lay flat against the animal and be puffed out only for display.
Ubirajara is also the subject of much debate, as the nature of its removal from Brazil was shady at best and, since 1990, it has remained illegal to remove any Brazilian fossils from Brazil, and to not have at least one Brazilian paleontologist on the team when assessing the fossil. The authors of the paper on Ubirajara, specifically David Martill, have scoffed at these laws and made some bordering-on-racist comments in their refusal to return the fossil.

Hiiii hello! I've been seeing your posts in my feed lately and decided to subscribe (I LOVE your art and Heavymedic and I ADORE the way you portray them) and then I noticed you liked dinosaurs too! That's so so cool!!! Idk if this has ever been asked before but what's your favourite dinosaur?? 🥺🥺🥺
(mine is ubirajara jubatus they're so neat)
Thank you for following and your lovely comments!! Glad you like how I portray them! I'm quite particular which definitely inhibits the volume as I end up doing a lot of self pruning lol I hadn't heard of ubirajara jubatus before! I LOVE any dinosaur which has a silly feature like Majungasaurus' TINY non-exsistant arms, Deinocheirus general whatever-the-hell-it's-doing or every-ceratopsian-and-their-stupid-varied-skulls will always be my favourites. Psittacosaurus and Styracosaurus come to immediate mind BUT i'm only human and a massive sucker for big charismatic megafauna (and a huge basic bastard to boot) so Spinosaurus ends up eeking everything out.
I love it's weird shape...I love that it only gets weirder the more pieces we (re)discover of it! There's a leaked paper synopsis circulating at the moment so I'm eagerly waiting have a read through of that with a cuppa when that is published. I'm very anti-'clutter' so me having this guy watching over me as I draw on a bookcase is a testament to how much I like him...he's friends with my Heavy lol
#asks#i cant believe how much these tf2 figures are worth btw#i got mine for free from work and i regret not grabbing like all of them now as everyone else was like eww whats this old arse game merch#me with tears in my eyes...ill be a good boy and just take one#i should have been a horrible boy and taken them all

What's your favorite dinosaur?
UBIRAJARA JUBATUS
(The story is that the Germans took a fossil illegally from Brazil decades ago and only last year the dino bones got repatriated. There was a whole movement demanding ubirajara get sent home during the negotiations and quite a few artists made drawings of it at the time ☺️❤️ )

Germany returns 'stolen' dinosaur fossil to Brazil
A fossil from a rare dinosaur that roamed South America 110 million years ago has been returned to Brazil from Germany, ending a diplomatic spat triggered by charges that researchers stole it.
The small dino, called Ubirajara jubatus, which had an early form of feathers and spearlike rods jutting from its shoulders, fascinated scientists, who identified it as previously unknown species in a paper published in 2020.
But it soon sparked a scientific and ethical scandal, when Brazilian researchers accused the German team behind the paper of illegally removing the fossil from Brazil.
After a nearly three-year standoff, a delegation led by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock returned the fossil Sunday during a visit to Brasilia, officials said.

okay this is technically cheating but
this is "Ubirajara jubatus"!! its quoted because: in 2020 "Ubirajara" was named by a team of German scientists based on material of a fossil from the Brazilian Crato Formation (dated to ~115 million years ago). However, it was soon found out that when the fossils were found in Brazil in 1995, they were illegally smuggled out of the country and into Germany, and Brazilian law prohibits the exportation and study of Brazilian fossils without at least one Brazilian scientist on the team. Due to the outrage of many Brazilian paleontologists, in 2022 the paper naming it was retracted (thus making it an invalid name) and in 2023 the fossil was returned to Brazil. anyways i chose this for you bc its really cool and cute and pretty and you give off small biting animal vibes :333333 (im praying that someday soon it will be renamed and made a valid species again by scientists of its proper country of origin) (oh also the fossil preserved those really cool shoulder display features!!!!! theyre really interesting!!!)
YIPPEE I GIVE SMALL ANIMAL VIBES LETS GO!
i love it so much its so cute tyyy
