i’m   like   95%   sure   i   have   an   assignment   due   tomorrow   and   it’s   already   midnight   ........   so   naturally   i’m   procrastinating   so   my   world   title   of   Captain   Dumbass   doesn’t   ever   come   into   question   👸👸   this   is   recycled   bc   i’m   chronically   incapable   of   effort   but   tl:dr   he’s   literally   the   embodiment   of   every   shitty   dude   u   have   the   misfortune   of   running   into   at   the   bar   :/   but   he’s   held   a   door   open   for   an   old   lady   1.5   times   in   his   life   so   all   is   forgiven   😉

𝖍𝖊𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙: 6‘2″  🤡
𝖆𝖕𝖕𝖊𝖆𝖗𝖆𝖓𝖈𝖊: having graduated from the title of white man’s wh*re , he is now cordially referred to as the white man’s beefcake . he treats gym sessions like a therapy visit , clocking in at a friendly 220 lbs . like all gym rats w/o a personality , he keeps his hair short on the sides n longer on top , a la this look . he has a scar running along the inside of his right arm from when he broke it , and another that splits his left eyebrow from his eighteenth birthday
𝖔𝖈𝖈𝖚𝖕𝖆𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓 : resident waste of space , quarterback for the hollingsworth mumbles ( update : it’s panthers ... they’re the panthers ) , least favorite son of the year recipient 1998 - 2019 .

ii.
second son of hall of fame ex falcons qb , miles pierce , and entrepreneur and daughter of a famed manhattan - based art collector , amélie pierce – rome’s future was pretty non - negotiable since day one . as soon as they could stumble around enough to pass for walking , miles had his sons enrolled in as many football programs as he legally could .
when rome was young , he loved it . the attention , the praise he received for his quickness despite being one of the smallest kids on the field . plus , going to his father’s games and being recognized as miles pierce’s kids was also fun . soon came time for the inevitable retirement on the heel of a downward - trending career , and after that things … changed .
suddenly , it was less praise and more demands . earlier practices , with his father making rome and his brother run drills until they were sick . suddenly , things that were previously good weren’t good enough , despite how much better his sons continued to be .
as anyone with half a brain could guess , these pressures eventually began to take their toll . with interests in anything else repressed by his father’s insistence that football is and always will be the most important thing in life , rome began to emulate his father’s aggressive attitude , first bringing it to the field and then , more notably , to his personal life . failed relationships , fights at school , sneaking home late absolutely blitzed out of his mind – none of the behaviors were healthy , but they were enough to take the weight of his father’s hands off of his shoulders , if only for a moment . until papa helicopter parent found out , that is .
tw abuse : despite his sons catering to his every will , miles’ incessant anger began to worsen , and soon a lot of the verbal abuse had started to become physical , too . sure , rome knew that it was wrong , but he also thought that maybe if he’d been better in the game last night , or worked harder at practice , maybe he’d stop .
he made varsity his freshman year of high school and took his team to the state championships , expecting his dad to finally approve of something he’d done . instead , he came home to the news that his mother was leaving – that his parents were splitting up and that this had been a long time combing . safe to say this mama’s boy ass bitch was devastated.
tw death : his dad only sunk deeper into his madness , but all that anyone else could see is that rome was throwing further , moving faster , and making better plays . a non - football related injury left him with a broken arm , and it was on the way home from the hospital that his father received the call that his ex - wife had taken her own life . devastated part ii , coming soon to a theater near you !
tw drugs , alcohol , general debauchery : the partying worsened . rome had entered a phase in his life where he was looking for something – anything to completely wipe his mind of any and all thoughts . the drugs , the alcohol , it was all a coping mechanism , but it definitely wasn’t a healthy one . soon , his brother left for college thousands of miles away , and rome found out that that fifth of rum goes down a lot easier after doing a few lines beforehand .
he chose to go to college in cali not because he wanted to , but because his dad knew that hollingsworth was a great school for scouting attention . in his midst of an extended bender compounded by having training now twice a day everyday on top of college courses , he decided to join pike – and he absolutely loves it .
he chose to major in psych because he wants to understand why his dad hates him so much skjfjks dumb b*tch .
also last summer he may or may not have allegedly accidentally wrapped his masterati around a telephone pole and gotten a dui . in reality , it was his brother’s accidental doing after a rather... heated argument between the two , but roman told him to gtfo and he’d take the fall because his bro finally managed to escape his dad and rome didn’t want him to suffer the same fate . it made headlines , but his dad pulled approximately 6 billion strings to get him conditionally reinstated to the team .
spent the summer before his junior year chillin in rehab , but he relapsed shortly after . consistency is key here , kids.
still bender - adjacent , but he’s kept it more lowkey because the nfl draft is coming in hot .
iii.
he really ………….. kinda sux , objectively sfdkjsdfjk . personality-wise and bc he has a southern accent .
he has so , so much pent up frustration and anger directed at his father and himself that it manifests in some pretty shitty behaviors .
he’s definitely controlling ( as a consequence of having v v little control over his own life ) , and he’ll manipulate any situation he deems worthy of his effort just to assure that he isn’t in any state of vulnerability .
i know yall get it , he vapes , but he’s definitely the kind of guy to try to keep the party running til 5 am and get pissed when people tell him that maybe he should stop .
he will provoke anyone and anything ( even inanimate objects ) if found in a self - destructive enough mood .
has a notoriously short temper , but what kind of gym rat doesn’t .
manages to still attain a 4.0 ( and in his words , psych is easy ) , so that’s another thing that makes it difficult for him to understand that his lifestyle is … per se … problematique .
10000% has sent a plethora of  u up ? texts
kinda gets a little .. hm .. sad sometimes but that’s only after everyone bails from the party n he’s left alone in a dirty ass frat house sdkfsdjk
definitely an irredeemable trash bag and pls don’t think of him any other way
is definitely fiercely loyal to the 2.5 people who can tolerate him .
currently in an uber ride to hell , but 10/10 hit the option so that his uber driver can’t talk to him 🤡

chapter 19 june 25, 2016 i feel a strong pair of arms wrap around me, squeezing me tightly. “good morning, beautiful.” auston whispers, pressing a kiss to my shoulder. “good morning, cutie.” i roll over and wrap my arms around him. “how’d you sleep?” he asks. “i slept well. how’d you sleep?” “i slept great with you here.” he pulls me closer to him. “aw, you’re too sweet.” i bury my head in his chest and squeeze him tight. “only to you, my love.” he presses a light kiss to the top of my head. “aw, stop it.” i laugh. “noooo, never.” he laughs. “i know i already told you yesterday, but i’m so so proud of you. not only are you number one in my heart, but you’re number one in the draft.” i smile cheekily. “as cheesy as that is, i’m gonna ignore that and take the compliment.” he smiles. “i’m seriously proud of you, aus. i can’t tell you how proud i am.” i bring my hand up to brush the side of his face.
“aw, thanks baby. i can’t tell you how much that means to me. i’m so happy that you’re proud of me.” he brings his hand up to brush the side of my face. “how could i not be proud of you?” i smile. “you’re right on that one.” he smiles. “i love you.” i slowly close the gap between us, kissing him slowly but passionately. “i love you too.” he pulls me back in for another kiss, his hands on the side of my face. “so, what are we doing today, cutie?” i look at him after we pull away. “i was thinking we could walk around the city, go on a date, then walk around more and come back to the room.” he smiles as he explains his plans for the day. “aw, that sounds like a great idea, babe. we should get ready so we can go.” i smile back. “yeah, you’re right.” he gets up, holding out his hand to help me up. “you’re so sweet.” i smile as i get up. “only to you, my love.” he kisses my hand, then going to get changed as do i. i put on one of my hockey shirts and black jean shorts. he puts on a white shirt and blue jean shorts. “you ready to go, babe?” he asks me, wrapping his arms around me from behind. “yeah, you?” i look up at him. “yeah, i’m all ready.” he smiles as he looks at me. i take his hand and we leave the hotel, walking out into the street. “you look really cute today.” i smile up at him as we walk. “thanks, baby. you look absolutely beautiful, my love.” he wraps his arm around my shoulders. “aw, thanks baby.” i wrap my arm around his back. “anything for my girl.” he smiles down at me. “i guess i’m gonna have to become a leafs fan now, huh?” i look up at him, laughing. “i guess you’re right, babe.” he chuckles. “ugh, the things i do for you.” i shake my head jokingly. “yeah, because you love me.” he smirks. “unfortunately.” i sigh jokingly. “hey! don’t be mean!” he fakes offence. “too late.” i laugh. “ugh, you’re so mean to me.” he shakes his head, laughing. “but i love youuuu.” i drag out the u. “i love youuuu too.” he copies me. “this place looks cute, why don’t we eat here, babe?” i point to a little cafe on the street corner. “i don’t see why not.” he smiles. we walk into the cafe, going up to the counter to order our food. i pull out my wallet to pay, but he stops me. “no, babe, i’ll pay.” he smiles. “are you sure?” i ask. “yes, baby.” he smiles again, making my heart melt. “ugh, fine.” i reluctantly let him pay. we find a table and sit down. “so, you excited to live in the city?” i ask him, taking his hand from across the table. “i’m so excited. i’ve always wanted to live in the city. i’m so glad i won’t be alone. i’m so thankful to have you with me. i honestly don’t know what i would do without you. you’re my world, my everything. you’re my girl, my baby, my first love, and hopefully my last. i love you so much i can’t even tell you how much i love you.” he takes my other hand in his, smiling wide as he looks into my eyes. “i promise you i’ll love you as long as i’m living. i could never love anyone else but you. you’re my boy, my one and only. you’re my entire universe, my first and last love. i can only hope you know half of how much i love you.” i look into his eyes, a smile crossing my face. “don’t worry, my love, i know how much you love me. i love you just the same, if not more.” he brings my hand up to his lips, pressing a soft kiss to it. “aw, stop it. you’re too sweet.” i smile. “only to you, sweetheart.” he smiles back. i’m about to say something back when our food comes and we eat. we leave the cafe and head back out onto the streets of buffalo. we walk to a nearby park and lay down in the grass. “i really don’t deserve you, baby. you’re too sweet, and you’re so cute. what did i do to deserve someone like you?” i smile. “what are you talking about, darling? you’re the best fiancée a guy could ask for. you completely trusted me when i went away and you didn’t break up with me when it got tough. you’re truly my dream girl. from the second i met you, i never looked at another girl. i know that sounds so cliche, but it’s true. i knew i wanted to keep you in my life forever. there was something about you that made me want you in my life. i didn’t know at the time that it meant marriage, but now i know. i never looked at any other girls after i met you. you were the only one i could think about. you were always on my mind, and you still are. even when i’m away from you, you’re always on my mind. i promise you i’ll love you as long as i’m alive. just the thought of loving anyone else but you is unappealing. i could never leave you or do anything to hurt you. i would hate myself if i hurt you. you only deserve to be loved. you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” he wraps an arm around my shoulders, making eye contact with me and smiling. “god, i-i don’t even know what to say. i guess i deserve you.” i laugh, moving closer to him and resting my head on his chest. “of course you do, my love. you deserve the world.” he pulls me closer, pressing a light kiss to my temple. “aw, you do too. if i could give you the world i would.” i smile at him, grabbing his other hand and holding it in mine. “you already have, baby. you’re my world.” he says cheekily, smiling back at me. “aw, you’re too sweet.” i smile as a blush creeps up on my face. “ha! you blushed!” he teases. “well yeah! you just said i’m your world! you blush all the time!” i defend. “true, you got me there.” he sighs. “it’s cute though. i’m glad i still have an affect on you.” i tease him. “you always have and you always will. you know how to calm me down. you know how to make my heart race a mile a minute. you know how to make me forget everything and just live in the moment with you. all of my worries disappear when i’m with you.” he smiles again. “you really mean that?” i look at him in complete awe. “of course i do, love. i don’t lie to you.” he smiles yet again, making my heart melt. “that’s true.” i laugh lightly. “i’m just so happy i met you. i’m so thankful i have you in my life. there’s no other girl i would want to move with me to a different city in a different country. there’s no other girl i would want to propose to. there’s no other girl i would want to see walking down the aisle. you’re the only girl for me.” he looks into my eyes, smiling. “aw, i love you.” i look into his eyes, smiling. “i love you too, sweetheart.” he kisses my temple softly. “i can’t see myself with anyone else but you. i can’t see myself lying in someone else’s arms. i can’t see myself holding anyone else’s hand. i honestly haven’t given anyone a second glance since i met you. i didn’t have any crushes growing up because you were the only one i had eyes for. you still are.” i lean into him more, smiling against his chest. “you really mean that?” he asks. “of course i do. i wouldn’t lie to you.” i smile at him. “i’m just shocked you feel that way. even though i’ve heard it millions of times, i’m still not used to it. my heart still thumps when you tell me you love me. you take my breath away when i look at you. you’re so so beautiful. i hope you see it too.” he brings my hand up to his lips, pressing a light kiss to it. “you tell me i’m beautiful all the time it’s hard to not believe it. you make me feel like i’m the only girl in the world, like i’m the most beautiful girl you’ve ever seen. i feel at home with you even if i’m miles from home. i don’t have to hide anything from you because you know everything about me. i love being with you.” i smile against his chest. “i love being with you too, baby. when those girls kept flirting with me overseas, i didn’t even give them a second glance because i was thinking about you and how hurt you would be if i did anything like that. all i could think about was you crying. it broke my heart just to think about it. i really don’t know how people can cheat on someone. i promise you i’ll never do that to you. i’ll never fall out of love with you. even if we did have a big fight, i would never leave.” he speaks softly, running his fingers through my hair. “that really makes me happy you feel that way. i get anxious sometimes that you’re gonna find someone better and leave me. i mean, there’s already girls that like you and the season hasn’t even started yet. it makes me nervous that they’ll come along and steal you from me. i don’t know what i would do without you. i really don’t.” i sigh. “baby, none of those girls are going to come along and steal me from you. i love you with all my heart. i could never love another girl like i love you, let alone love another girl period. you’re my soulmate. i know it in my heart that you’re the one for me. i know right by your side is where i’m supposed to be. it’s where i belong. i feel complete with you. i would be lost without you. i could never leave you for any of those girls.” he whispers sweetly, pressing a kiss to my forehead. “i can’t even tell you how much i love you. i love you so much it drives me insane. i would do literally anything for you, aus. i love you with my whole heart. you’re my baby. no one could ever replace you.” i cuddle into him a little more, holding him tight. “you’re my baby too. no one could ever replace you.” he holds me closer, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. “you’re too sweet.” i laugh lightly. “only to you, my love.” he grabs my face in his hands, kissing me. “aw, that was so cute. i love you.” i smile as i look into his eyes. “i love you too, baby.” he smiles as he looks into my eyes. “have i ever told you how cute you are?” a smile creeps across my face as i talk. “yeah, many times.” he chuckles. “well, you’re cute. you’re so so cute. you’re adorable. you make my heart melt when i look at you. when you smile at me my heart goes crazy. i should be thanking your parents. they’re the ones that made you this cute.” i laugh. “you’re not wrong.” he laughs with me. “i just can’t believe how cute you are. i’ve never seen someone so cute.” i smile at him. “nah, you’re cuter.” he shrugs it off. “i’m guessing we’re never going to agree on this?” i laugh. “i guess so.” he chuckles. “we should really go once the sun sets. i don’t want your mom to worry about us.” i suggest. “yeah, you’re right. i didn’t even think about that.” he laughs. “she’s gonna think we died or something.” i laugh. “true, i’d hate for her to be worried.” he agrees. “me too.” i agree with him. both of us were quiet for a minute, watching the sun go down. “so, how do you like buffalo?” he asks me. “i like it a lot actually. i didn’t think there was much here, but it’s a nice city. even if there wasn’t much here, being with you would’ve made up for it.” i answer, smiling at him. “aw, stop it. you’re too sweet.” he laughs. “only to you, my love.” i hold him tighter. “you’re too good to me.” he holds me tighter. “because i love youuuu.” i press a soft kiss to his cheek. “i love youuuuu too.” he places his hand on my cheek, slowly pulling me closer to him and kissing me softly. “we should probably go. it’s kinda dark out.” i laugh lightly. “yeah, you’re right.” he gets up, holding his hand out for me to take. “i had a great time with you, baby.” i lean against his arm, smiling. “i had a great time with you too. i love spending time with my girl.” he puts his arm around my waist, pressing a soft kiss to my temple. “i love spending time with my boy.” i slightly lean into his side, putting my arm around him. we walk back to the hotel, making it up to the room. we change into our pjs and crawl into bed together. he immediately pulls me into his chest, causing me to put my arms around him. “i can’t wait to move in with you. i can’t tell you how happy i am that i’ll be with you all season. it’ll feel like home just because you’ll be there with me. i’m so excited to come home to you every day.” he pauses. “aw, baby, that’s so sweet.” i hold him tighter. “i’m not even done yet, baby.” he smiles. “oh, continue.” i laugh. “i know i won’t be able to be stressed out because you’ll be there. when i see you, all of my stress melts away. all i can think about is how much i love you. i love you so so much. you seriously have my heart. you’ve had my heart since we met.” he tells me with a huge smile on his face. “sorry, i never planned on giving it back. to be fair, you have mine too.” i smile. “you can keep it, as long as you don’t break it.” he smirks. “no no, i could never break your heart. you’re too soft and sweet for that.” i wrap my arms around him tightly, nuzzling my head in his neck. “it’s okay, baby, i trust you.” he brings his hand up to hold the back of my head, pulling me closer to him. “i hope you won’t break my heart either.” i smile, looking into his bright brown eyes. “no, i could never. you don’t deserve to get your heart broken. you’re too good to me.” he holds me tight. “aw, you’re too sweet.” i squeeze him tight. “i love you i love you i love you.” he says as he squeezes me as tight as he can. “i love you too, aus.” i squeeze him as tight as i can. “we should probably go to bed. we have an early flight tomorrow.” he groans. “yeah, you’re right.” i sigh. “goodnight, my love. i love you with all my heart.” he smiles. “goodnight, aus. i love you with all my heart too.” i lean up and give him a quick kiss, then resting my head on his chest.

An NFL player’s guide for the right (and wrong) time to hurdle
Tumblr media

NFL players aren’t going to stop hurdling, but hopefully they take these suggestions into consideration.
Hurdling is both an exciting and terrifying aspect of football. When hurdling another player actually works, it’s awesome. But when it goes poorly, it’s embarrassing, and worse, it can lead to an injury.
Hurdling has been a go-to highlight move for years, but recently it seems to that more and more players are doing it in the NFL.
That doesn’t mean every player should attempt it during a game. Luckily, we put together a handy guide to help.
Hurdle if you have the genes to do so
Case in point: Ezekiel Elliott
Elliott was drafted by Dallas fourth overall in 2016, and led the NFL in rushing twice in his first three seasons. His production over the last few years has made him worthy of being considered one of the NFL’s best backs.
Doing things like this certainly helps that reputation. Elliott absolutely destroyed Eagles cornerback Tre Sullivan during a Sunday Night Football game in 2018:

— Blogging The Boys (@BloggingTheBoys) November 12, 2018
That is absolutely perfect form: he clears the defender with ease and lands his feet and body forward so he can keep barreling downfield.
“Zeke says if these guys are gonna go low, I have to be able to show them that I’m gonna go over the top of them by hurdling ‘em,” said Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett in NFL Films’ The Hurdle.
He also had this hurdle against the Bears in 2016, during which he was airborne for a solid three years:

This isn’t a new move for Zeke whatsoever. He also did it at Ohio State:

Part of the reason Zeke can hurdle like this is that it’s literally in his genes — he hurdled in high school, and his mother, Dawn, was an all-conference track star at Missouri. His sister Lailah is a sophomore on OSU’s track team, where she runs hurdles, too. His other sister Aaliyah ran track and hurdles in Missouri as well.

Not all running backs agree with his decisions to go jump over defenders, though:
“He better stop that,” said Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett in 2017 via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “That’s one thing that I don’t like. When you get airborne, you’re at the mercy of the hit, and sometimes you can’t protect yourself.”
Dorsett disagrees with Zeke hurdling, but genes don’t lie.
Hurdle if you’ve ever won a state championship in the event
Case in point: Todd Gurley
The Los Angeles Rams running back is a freak of nature, and he could probably hurdle in every single game if he wanted to. One of his best hurdles came during a 2017 game against Washington when Gurley jumped over D.J. Swearinger like it was nothing:
Tumblr media
“You don’t really ever teach a guy — that’s not something that you coach,” said Rams head coach Sean McVay via The Hurdle. “I think certain guys, they just kind of have had to feel how to control their body and really since they were younger kids.”
Gurley does this type of thing a lot:

A good reason Gurley is so good at this? He won a hurdling state championship in high school in North Carolina, setting school records in the 110 and 300 meters. Gurley’s high school track coach, Andrew Harding, thought Gurley was a good enough hurdler to win a gold medal in the event.
“That’s how talented he was,” Harding told ESPN in 2017. “I really do believe he could have been that. I don’t make that comment with just about anybody, but Todd was that gifted.”
Like Zeke, Gurley hurdled in college, too:

Although Gurley hasn’t gotten injured from hurdling, he realizes the risks that are involved.
“One day, it’s probably going to end bad,” Gurley said on ESPN’s Undisputed in 2018. “Until then, I’m going to keep jumping. For the most part, it’s more DBs. Most DBs are not going to hit a running back high, especially if they’re going 100 miles per hour fast at them. It’s kind of just a reaction and for the most part, it’s been working.”
Hurdle if you’re 6’5 and have impressive athleticism
Case in point: Josh Allen
The Bills’ first-round draft pick made his second career start on the road against the Minnesota Vikings in 2018. He finished with 39 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, including this amazing hurdle over the Vikings’ Anthony Barr for a first down:
This just in: Josh Allen has ups!#BUFvsMIN #GoBills pic.twitter.com/xv6cxtKu2h
— Buffalo Bills (@BuffaloBills) September 23, 2018
“I was trusting my feet, trusting my gut,” Allen told ESPN after the game. “There was a guy who was maybe three yards in front of the sticks. I knew we needed a first down there and we went on to score on that drive. It was a big play, but it was just another first down.”
This type of play coming from Allen might’ve been unexpected coming from a quarterback. But as Adam Stites pointed out, Allen’s athleticism shouldn’t be too surprising:
He had above-average results in just about every drill at the NFL Combine, including his 4.75-second 40-yard dash, 33.5-inch vertical, and 119-inch broad jump. But other quarterbacks have put up similar numbers and never looked good on a football field.
Those who want the Bills’ franchise QB to stay healthy might not want him to hurdle and risk injury, but it’s pretty awesome that Allen is able to do this in the first place.
Hurdle if you have ridiculously strong, tree-trunk like legs
Case in point: Saquon Barkley
The former No. 2 overall draft pick made a name for himself in college, where he finished as Penn State’s all-time rushing touchdown (43) and total touchdown (53) leader. But he was powerful off the field, too. Back in 2017, Barkley broke a Penn State weightlifting record when he did this:
Penn State Strong! Barkley 405lbs Power Clean pic.twitter.com/1LnAEYqy73
— Iron Lions (@IronLions1) June 29, 2017
Barkley’s thighs are so jacked we once came up with 20 nicknames for them. His speed and athleticism for his size is quite the combo. At the combine, he checked in at 6’0, 233 pounds, and still managed to run a 4.4 40-yard dash with a 4.24 shuttle and 41-inch vertical leap. During Barkley’s rookie season with the New York Giants, he rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns, and was selected to the Pro Bowl.
During that same rookie season, he hurdled over dudes like Malcolm Jenkins with ease:

To avoid risking injury, Barkley may not hurdle in the future all too often, but it’s certainly fun to see when he does it.
Hurdle if you can make a pass rush play
Case in point: Seattle linebacker Mychal Kendricks
The eight-year NFL veteran suffered a knee injury in December 2018 that sidelined him for the rest of the season, but he’s fully healthy for Seattle this season. So healthy, in fact, that he freaking hurdled Ravens running back Mark Ingram while trying to pressure Lamar Jackson:

— The Checkdown (@thecheckdown) October 20, 2019
Granted, Ingram was probably a lot easier to hurdle than, say, an opposing offensive lineman, but Kendricks made a good decision here since he was able to get to Jackson afterward.
Hurdle if you’re an ageless wonder
Case in point: Vernon Davis
During his NFL Combine, Davis ran a 4.38 40-yard-dash — part of the reason he was the No. 6 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2006, the fourth-highest tight end selected in draft history.
Incredibly, Davis has been able to maintain a 14-year NFL career, which is double the average league career length. At 35 years old, his style of play hasn’t slowed down one bit. During a 2019 game against the Eagles, he showed off this hurdle:
Tumblr media
What’s even more impressive is that he scored a 48-yard touchdown after making this leap!
Tumblr media
I’m just saying, I don’t know many 35-year-olds who can hurdle like this.
Don’t hurdle if you’re a tight end born after 1996
Making mistakes when you’re still a young player is part of the game of football. That’s been evident with tight ends, who have made incredibly poor decisions to hurdle in games, especially in 2019.
Case in point: Ravens TE Mark Andrews
The 23-year old Andrews tried hurdling against the Cincinnati Bengals and well, he ended up fumbling the football because of it:
Some things are just a little too ambitious...#CINvsBAL | #SeizeTheDEY pic.twitter.com/8Y41z7ROqY
— Cincinnati Bengals (@Bengals) October 13, 2019
But even after the game Andrews admitted he isn’t ruling out hurdling completely in the future.
“I’m not going to stop being me, being an aggressive player,” Andrews said via Penn Live. “It wasn’t anything they did. I hit the ball out with my own knee, and I gotta be better than that. I can’t do that to my team. That’s not acceptable.”
Case in point: Buffalo Bills TE Dawson Knox
Knox was selected by the Bills out of Ole Miss in the third round of the draft. Call it a rookie mistake, but Knox made an equally ill-advised decision to hurdle against the Titans:

— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) October 6, 2019
The best part in this video is the announcer going “Mm!” during the replay because yeah, ouch.
Case in point: Lions TE T.J. Hockenson
Hockenson — a former Iowa Hawkeye and Detroit’s first-round draft pick — made a bad he had this scary hurdle attempt against the Kansas City Chiefs:
The hurdling phenomenon may have just come to an end. TJ Hockenson is hurt after this play pic.twitter.com/Dv4pGGCD5W
— Jordan Dajani (@JordanDajani) September 29, 2019
What’s worse is that Hockenson actually got hurt on this attempted hurdle, and had to get carted off the field after the play.
Tumblr media

He was in the concussion protocol for a couple weeks because of this injury, too. But like the Ravens’ Andrews, Hockenson isn’t completely ruling out hurdling in the future:
“Nah, I’m going to go out there and play the game,” Hockenson said when asked if he’d stop attempting to hurdle. “I’m not worried about anything else. I’m just going out there to play the game, whether that opportunity presents itself or not. I’m not going to change anything based on one thing.”
Don’t hurdle if it’s illegal
Case in point: Hurdling over linemen to try and block kicks
In 2017, the NFL banned defenders leaping over linemen to block kicks. It’s a pretty tragic rule change, because at its best it produced beautiful block plays like this one:
Tumblr media
That’s former Seahawks DB Kam Chancellor hurdling against the Panthers in the playoffs in 2014. This particular block didn’t count (Chancellor ran into the kicker after the hurdle), but it was still an amazing attempt.
Here’s what the NFL rulebook says about leaping now:
Running forward and leaping across the line of scrimmage in an obvious attempt to block a field goal or Try Kick, or apparent kick, unless the leaping player was in a stationary position within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped. A player who is more than one yard behind the line of scrimmage before or at the snap, may run forward and leap, provided he does not cross the line of scrimmage or land on players.
That doesn’t mean players haven’t tried. During a 2018 game between the Seahawks and Vikings, Bobby Wagner used his teammates to jump over the line to block a kick:
Bobby Wagner is a freak pic.twitter.com/tIA4EMxDha
— Jackson Frank (@jackfrank_jjf) December 11, 2018
The refs should have called a penalty on the play since you aren’t allowed to use your teammates for leverage, but they didn’t throw a flag. So Wagner got away with one there.
There are obvious concerns with hurdling linemen, and the first one being safety.
Don’t hurdle if you’re playing in a dang preseason game
Case in point: Reggie Bush
During an August 2015 game between the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos, the then-49ers running back Bush attempted to hurdle five-time Pro Bowl corner Aqib Talib. Let’s just say it did not go ideally:
Tumblr media
First of all, to address Bush’s decision to hurdle: this is absolutely terrible, especially given how low Bush still was to the ground. Bush was lucky he didn’t get hurt here, as Niners Nation pointed out at the time.
Bush, at least, could laugh at himself after the game:
Lol damn did it look that bad on TV? All I could do was laugh at myself! #iwasntready… https://t.co/M9Lb0ABloi
— Reggie Bush (@ReggieBush) August 30, 2015
Glad Bush found the humor in this, but just a bad idea all around here.
As you can see, there’s a very thin line between being a highlight and a blooper when it comes to hurdling.
What side of that line you might end up on might be a bit difficult to gauge in the middle of a play, but hopefully this guide helps. While NFL players aren’t going to stop hurdling completely, they can certainly take these suggestions into consideration.

THE NEW LEFT TURNS TO MOOD OF VIOLENCE IN PLACE OF PROTEST
Paul Hofman, The New York Times, 7 May 1967
“We are working to build a guerrilla force in an urban environment,” said the national secretary of the left-wing Students for a Democratic Society, Gregory Calvert, one day recently.
“We are actively organizing sedition,” he said.
Mr. Calvert, a 29-year-old former history teacher, spoke pleasantly about revolution in his dingy office on Chicago's Skid Row. The threat of violence in his words characterizes the current radicalization of the New Left.
A maze of factions with a penchant for verbosity and a hankering for actions, the New Left wants emphatically to be distinct from the old left—the socialist and Communist movements whose history goes back over generations.
Ebullience and Frustration Just how distinct it has become was made clear during a three-week series of interviews with some 75 New Left activists and sympathizers from coast to coast. Most of them were younger than 30, and some sounded much more truculent than members of the Moscow-oriented Communist party, U. S. A.
The spirit of resistance and direct action constitutes perhaps the major attitude in the New Left today. Other findings in this assessment of the New Left's mood are as follows:
An ebullience over the impact of opposition to the war in Vietnam, which emotionally involves some members of the middle class and leads them to New Left positions also on domestic issues.
A frustration resulting from the lack of New Left political power and the failures of “peace” candidates in national and local elections.
A virulent factionalism similar to the doctrinaire old left feuds, a factionalism that is being exploited by extremists. up with leftist and “anti-imperialist” movements in Latin America, Europe and emerging nations.
The growth of a broadening “hippie” segment, mainly on the East and West Coasts, occasionally Joining the New Left in demonstrations but also worrying it because drug users and beatniks tend to withdraw from society instead of attempting to reform or revolutionize it.
The drifting apart of young whites and Negroes, close allies in the civil rights battles in the South a few years ago, as black power extremism spreads in Northern ghettos.
‘Che Lives in Our Hearts' If there is one dominant hero of the New Left mood, perhaps he is Ernesto Che Guevara.
Mr. Calvert, the beardless, ruddy-faced national secretary of Students for a Democratic Society, said:
“Che’s message is applicable to urban America as far as the psychology of guerrilla action goes. . . . Che sure lives in our hearts.”
Che Guevara, the Argentine-born revolutionary who was an associate of Premier Fidel Castro of Cuba, disappeared more than two years ago and is rumored to be leading insurgents somewhere in the Andean fastnesses.
A long way from the South American sierras, a surprising number of young left-wing intellectuals were found to revere the Argentinian adventurer. Rebellious students who spoke with equal disdain about “Establishment liberals” and “Communist squares” professed the cult of the “pure” man of revolutionary action.
Posters of Che Guevara and of Malcolm X, the black nationalist slain here two years ago, are advertised for sale “at special bulk rates” in a San Francisco monthly, The Movement. The radical publication disaffiliated recently from the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the militant, Southern-oriented movement that used to be one of the pillars of the New Left but has lately veered toward black power goals and away from Students for a Democratic Society.
‘I'm No Pacifist' Che Guevara’s bearded likeness was encountered on the walls of the littered offices of radical newspapers and left-wing groups. His name cropped up in talks in college cafeterias whenever the New Left’s current infatuation with direct action was mentioned.
“I recognize that violence may be necessary, I'm no pacifist,” said a vibrant young woman who has done much work for the New Left, Leni Zeiger. “I’m a white, middle-class girl, but I understand why Negroes, Puerto Ricans or Okies riot. I feel the same frustrations in myself, the same urge to violence.”
Ann Arbor is important on the New Left map because Students for a Democratic Society was born there some six year ago. The movement’s first national convention in Port Huron Mich., in June, 1962, produce a basic New Left manifesto.
This rejected “paranoiac anti-Communism” while blaming the Soviet Union for suppressing opposition. It strongly attacked American capitalism, denounce the “hypocrisy of America ideals” and advocated a vaguely defined . “participatory democracy.”
Several S.D.S. member asked for practical examples of “participatory democracy” in action, pointed to the Yugoslav system of workers’ council running nationalized business enterprises.
Amendments to the “Port Huron Statement” have made the S.D.S. program completely agnostic on Communism, opening the door to membership of Communists.
Since then, Students for Democratic Society has gone through various phases, aided the Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee in the South, it went into the Northern ghettos to organize their inhabitants, and lately it has swung back onto the campus.
Some of the ghetto efforts a still alive. Among them are the Newark Community Unity Project—directed by Tom Hayden, a cofounder of S.D.S. a main author of the Port Huron manifesto— and Chicago’s Jobs or Income Now (J.O.I.N.).
In the short but lively history of S.D.S., 1967 is the year of the “prairie guys,” the national leaders who were elect at a convention in a Methodist camp at Clear Lake, Iowa, in September. Nick Egleson, president, Carl Davidson, vice president, Mr. Calvert and their friends are leading S.D.S., in Davidson’s words, “from protest to resistance."
Action Above Ideology Mr. Calvert described himself as a “post-Communist revolutionary," putting action above ideology. Dee Jacobsen, assistant national secretary a headquarters manager, said t North Vietnamese whom S.D.S representatives had got in touch with “cannot understand we don't take any direct action."
The three-room, $125-a-month national headquarters of Students for a Democratic Society is at 1608 West Madison Street Chicago's Skid Row. It is close to the area of last summer’s Negro rioting.
Despite the squalid settling, the headquarters looks more affluent than it did at its torn location near the University Chicago campus on the city’s South Side.
Last year there was picturesque clutter: now there is disorderliness. There are boxes outgoing and incoming mail, staffers who answer telephones and an ancient safe with a combination lock.
"We are getting ready the revolution." Mr. Jacobsen joked with a thin smile while visitor remarked on the new look.
Mr. Jacobsen said he abandoned psychiatric hospital work to become a full-time S.D.S. organizer because he thought “my life was getting unbelievable.”
Mr. Calvert and Mr. Jacob said S.D.S. had some 200 chapters, with 8,000 dues-pay members and at least 25.1 other supporters who participated in chapter activities.
These activities, the S.D.S. leaders said, are centered on enlisting young men to evade military duty by “insubordinate, legal and illegal emigration Canada, going underground America—everything.’’
Students for a Democratic Society is organizing “draft resistance unions" and has “national draft resistance ordinator."
A Change of Plan The resistance-fomenting leadership has only contempt for electoral campaigns “peace" candidates and is hostile toward more protest demonstrations. The leadership first decided not to participate in Spring Mobilization anti-war demonstrations of last April deeming them a futile exert but was overruled at a meeting of the movement’s national council in Cambridge early in April.
The national leaders still not seem to think much of mobilization, and they have hinted at possibly even sterner action than resistance to the draft.
"Some of our members undoubtedly will help” in ghetto riots this summer, Mr. Jacobsen said.
A former S.D.S. organizer, who asked that he not be named, ridiculed the present leadership’s talk of urban guerrillas.
"Greg Calvert has read something about leftist terrorist commandos in Caracas,” he said, "and he and his friends think they are Venezuelans. They are becoming a sect. Romantic and out of touch with reality.”
He said infiltrators from the pro-Peking Progressive Labor party had gained control of a least one S.D.S. chapter in Chicago. He did not name it.
Other New Left moderates suggested that the verbal militancy in S.D.S. headquarter might mask an inferiority complex vis-i-vis Negro racists who had already made up their minds that violence was necessary to attain black power.
“Black nationalists are stacking Molotov cock tails and studying how they can hold a few city blocks in an uprising, how to keep off the fire brigade and the police so that the National Guard must be called out,” a white Ohio student said. "And they're right. We ought to help them where we can, but we oughtn’t be hung up with leading or liberating the Negroes."
In Praise of Black Power Mr. Calvert conceded that S.D.S. had few Negro member He said:
“Black power is absolutely necessary. When we have organized the white radicals we can link up with the Negro radicals."
This seemed to imply a lack of such a link at present.
In the view of Jack Newfield, assistant editor of The Village Voice, the Greenwich Village newspaper, and a former S.D.S member, the radicalization of New Left movements results from a feeling of hopelessness “The situation is getting more oppressive," he said. “Look at Alabama, look at Georgia, look at the war in Vietnam."
At the Internal Security Division of the Department of Justice, an official said “it is obvious that these [New Left] groups are becoming more and more vociferous and threatening“ in protesting against the war in Vietnam and calling for sedition.” However, he said was unable to comment on he serious a threat to law and order these groups were.
He said that “we are following closely the activities some of these groups,” keeping in mind that the First Amendment to the Constitution protects freedom of speech. He said violations of the Universal Military Training and Service Act and the Sedition Act were being investigated but declined to indicate whether prosecutions were on the increase.
Talks with police officers a community leaders in various cities found most in agreement that only a small hard core leftist activists is determined to defy the law—maybe no more than a few hundred across the nation. The number of young New Left militants who advocate violence is grown, it was found, but whether the increasingly radical talk can be translated into unlawful action is controversial.
A potential threat to law and order from New Left radicals was seen in areas where racial disorders this summer are feared, including Cleveland, Chicago and, possibly New York.
Numerically, the New Left remains weak. The figure 200,000 adherents nationwide that is often mentioned by sympathizers seems exaggerated.
Staughton Lynd’s View In the New Left itself, campus talk about direct act Is only rarely frightening, does not frighten Staughton Lynd, who at the age of 38 often called an "elder statesman" of the New Left.
The guerrilla concept is "is descriptive" of the new radical trend, he said in an interview. He appeared to distinguish tween active violence and civil disobedience, which he himself practiced at the end of 1966 when he defied the United States Government and visited Hanoi with Mr. Hayden, S.D.S. cofounder, and Dr. Hebert Aptheker, the leading theoretician of the Communist Party, U.S.A.
Mr. Lynd, an associate professor of history at Yale University, who has been influenced by Quaker pacifism, said he expected to receive a leave of absence from Yale and move to Chicago teach at an S.D.S.-backed course for community organizers. Graduates of the school may assist draft resistors or defend the interests of the poor in housing and welfare, he said.
Mr. Lynd stressed that “solid base of local organization" was more important the New Left than going quickly into national politics.
“I believe in local polital candidates” of the New Left said.
A more sanguine assessment of the New Left's political sensibilities was given by Booth, who was S.D.S. national secretary before Mr. Calvert. Mr. Booth said in Chicago that the defeats of New Left “peace” candidates in year’s primaries and Congressional elections “have given people a better sense of how much work is to be done” to win political power.
Third-Party Idea Mr. Booth said the idea setting up a third party or antiwar and New Loft platform deserved consideration.
He expressed hope that “in three months” a vast audience would rally behind Rev. Dr. Marlin' Luther King Jr., the civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, and Dr. Benjamin Spock, the pediatrician and antiwar leader, as candidates for President and Vice President. Dr. King has said he does not intend to run.
Mr. Booth, a 23-year-old Swarthmore College graduate, is a board member of the National Conference for New Politics. ("Those left liberals!" Mr. Calvert sneered when the group was mentioned to him.)
The conference was established last year to help New Left and antiwar forces win political Influence. Cochairmen are Julian Bond of the Georgia Legislature and Simon Casidy, a California Democrat. Dr. Spock was among the founders.
Another backer of Dr. King is Robert Scheer, the 31-year-old managing editor of Ramparts magazine. During a visit to New York he predicted broad popular support for the clergyman.
"I cannot think of any Negro minister attacking him,” Mr. Scheer said. “Stokely Carmichael [chairman of the S.N.C.C.] embraced him publicly. The extremists will have to go along.”
Mr. Scheer knows how to sound pretty extremist himself. In the Spring Mobilization rally In San Francisco he called President Johnson a “murderer” who was aiming at a “final solution” in Vietnam. The term “final solution” was used in official Nazi documents to describe the destruction of Jews ordered by Hitler.
The executive director of the Conference for New Politics, William F. Pepper, said in an interview at the group’s New York headquarters, at 250 West 57th Street, that "we aren’t a bunch of liberal do-gooders, we are revolutionary.” (“Liberal” is a dirty word in the New Left.)
He said the conference aimed at affiliating with the hundreds of antiwar committees and left-oriented “single-issue and multi-issue” groups that had sprung up throughout the country.
Mr. Pepper said he once was a campaign coordinator for Senator Robert F. Kennedy in Westchester County but that in his present activity he was not “fronting for Senator Kennedy.”
A Meeting With Kennedy Senator Kennedy has shown interest in the New Left and some time ago had a long talk with Mr. Lynd and Mr. Hayden at his home here. The meeting was arranged by Mr. Newfield. who is working on a biography of the Senator.
It was an aide of Dr. King, the Rev. James Bevel, who served as national director of the Spring Mobilization. The protest Idea was originally conceived by pacifists around the Rev. A. J. Muste, who died last Feb. 11.
While Dr. King jolted the civil rights movement by saying that it was vitally connected with the campaign against the war in Vietnam, leftists became prominent in the mobilization campaign. Some moderates withdrew.
The antiwar rally on April 15 In San Francisco's 62,000-seat Kezar Stadium, which was almost filled, was directed by a 21-year-old Trotskyite, Kipp Dawson. Outside the stadium, members of a Los Angeles-based pro-Peking group, wearing homemade uniforms with red-star insignia, sold copies of the “little red book" anthology of Chairman Mao Tse-tung's thoughts. The Maoists had denounced the April 15 demonstrations as a "revisionist Trotskyite betrayal." but did not pass up its possibilities for propaganda.
The W. E. B. Dubois Clubs, widely regarded as an unofficial youth arm of the Communist Party, U. S. A., played a subdued role In the antiwar drive or were missing altogether. Leftists of various shades wondered why.
An attempt to obtain an explanation at the Chicago national headquarters of the clubs was unsuccessful. The two-room office In the Great Lakes Building, 180 North Wacker Drive, was closed, and the telephone was disconnected.
A Theory About the Club Some DuBois Clubs have ceased their advertising of activities in local student publications. A Negro undergraduate had his own theory of why the clubs, which are named after a dead Negro Marxist scholar, seem dormant:
“The Communist Party desperately wants to look liberal and respectable. These DuBois cats, square as they are, are too swingin’ for the party bureaucrats.”
A former DuBois leader, Michael Myerson, is director of a newly formed Tri-Continental Information Center here that, according to a recent announcement. “has established contacts with anti-imperialist organizations and movements throughout the world.” Among the sponsors are Communist party members such as Dr. Aptheker, S.D.S. backers and Dr. Spock.
Mr. Myerson, a 26-year-old University of California graduate, said the members of the center were offering their services and support as Individuals and not as representatives of any organizations. The group has an office at 1133 Broadway and a two-man staff. It said It would issue a monthly bulletin and a series of pamphlets and would send fact-finding missions "to areas suffering from United States domination."
Students for a Democratic Society, too, is branching out internationally. A new Radical Education Project calls for creation of a network of "scholars, journalists, leftist youth leaders. government officials, guerrilla leaders, etc.," to gather international intelligence on insurgent movements and foreign policy developments.
The Young Socialist Alliance, an appendage of the Trotskyite Socialist Workers party, thoroughly committed its small but disciplined membership to the Spring Mobilization demonstration.
The Trotskyites’ advocacy of all-embracing. “nonexclusive” antiwar alliances is met with deep distrust by many New Left adherents.
‘Liars’ a Student Says "The Trotskyites are liars and just want to take over the entire left,” a Harvard University student said.
A visitor to the Spring Mobilization headquarters in San Francisco, a few days after the April 15 demonstrations, found the organizing committee's director there, the petite Miss Dawson, counting money contributions and arranging for the payment of bills.
It quickly developed during an interview that Miss Dawson's revolutionary idol is Che Guevara.
"The Cuban revolution is the most exciting thing that has happened In our time,” said the Young Socialist Alliance activist, who was not yet born when Leon Trotsky was murdered in Mexico in 1940.
Trotsky, one of the chief organizers of the Russian October Revolution of 1917, advocated world revolution and establishment of uncompromising “pure", Communism. He was forced into I exile by Stalin. Followers of Trotsky's doctrine of “permanent revolution” are influential in some Latin-American countries.
While the heirs of the old left thus identify with Che Guevara. his book "Guerrilla Warfare”—and not Mao’s little red book—is becoming part of the young radicals’ field kit.

Car insurance is a conspiracy!?
I passed my test less than a month ago, and it just so happened that a distant family member was trying to get rid of a car and I managed to get it on the cheap. My friends who live near me, have similar circumstances, don't pay even half as much as that so what the hell is going on? Getting car insurance for 17 year old... True or False?
Hi, i am 17 in just over 2 weeks, and looking at car insurance i am shocked.. Cheapest i have found is 4900 fully comp on a vauxhall corsa (1L), and all other cars are over 5k which is like a grand over the price of the cars. This is a bit pricey seeing as im not going to be using me car at all during the week when at school, but some weekends i will, but my parents are just saying i gotta accept its expensive and they dont mind paying. Anyway i heard today that if your dad owned his own business (which mine does) then you could get car insurance for like 1k on pretty much any standard car, is this true? Im the oldest sibling and therefore my parents dont really know much about getting good car insurance quotes, i know more than them tbh, so does anyone know anything about this way of insuring? Thanks for any help, been looking at black boxes too btw, dont know if i want to risk it. No rubbish comments about how im rich or whatever please. Thanks""

Does anyone know of any life insurance companies that will let you take out a term life policy for one age 69?
My grandfather and I are really close. He keeps telling me that he wants me to get a insurance policy on him which makes me feel bad, because I get the feeling there's something else serious he is not telling me. If something happens to him I don't want to be in a situation where I can't afford to bury him & I know that that type of stuff is important to get taken care of. I have checked into it a little bit online, but from what I have read & been told....when someone is over the age of 65, life insurance companies will not let you get a term policy for someone that age. My grandfather is 69 years old and will be 70 yrs old this month. I really don't have a whole lot of money to pay for whole life insurance & believe that I can only afford to get a term life insurance policy. Which type of ticket goes on your insurance?
I know a speeding ticket will show up on your insurance and cause it to be quite a bit more than it was, but do any other less than obvious types affect your insurance? For example, my town has a completely pointless ordinance in which their residents are not allowed to park their cars in the street between the hours of 2 AM and 6 AM, unless you call the police that night and let them know that your car will be in the street, and then they'll just ignore your car if they see it. Well, I decided to rebel and not call last night, so, I wake up this morning to find a nice (still cheap, luckily) ticket on my window. I didn't call because I have gotten away with it each time before, so I figured maybe they don't check my neighborhood. Go figure. But I just don't want my insurance going up because of this and I'm not sure if all tickets are sent to the insurance company. Thanks in advance!""

Car Insurance - What kind of coverage is needed for an Occasional Driver...?
Okay, this is the deal, I have full coverage car insurance. This means that the insurance will cover me, if I have an accident that is my fault or if someone else hits me & it's not my fault. I also have insurance that covers me if someone breaks into my car & steals any kind of important items in my car. The Question... I sometimes let other people drive my car, to run errands for me (like driving my car home, cause I'm too sleepy to drive or I'm super busy & need an item from the store & I hand my keys to a licensed driver). I talked to my insurance company & was told they do not have coverage that will cover other drivers unless they are listed under my coverage. The problem - I don't want to list everybody in my family or all my friends. Isn't there insurance coverage that will cover anybody driving my vihecle as long as they are older than 25 & has a valid license? If so, what's the name of this type coverage - I nd to know the name b4 I call other companys. thanks""

Staying on parents health insurance in NJ?
As the title states, I am wondering if I am eligible to stay on my parent's health insurance (we live in New Jersey and my dad gets the family insurance through his job in Delaware). I am 23 years old, not in school, and my job offers health insurance. I have read that the law allows children under the age of 27 to remain on their parent's health insurance UNLESS the kid's job offers health insurance. As I stated, mine does offer it. HOWEVER, an older coworker of mine told me that her children were able to stay on the family health insurance until age 27 even though the kids' work offered insurance because the cost of the insurance at the child's job was over $25 per week. The cheapest policy at my job will cost me just over $30 per week. Unfortunately, I have not found any trace of this $25 rule anywhere online. Is this a true policy? If insurance isn't offered cheaply enough, can I stay on my parent's policy? Can anyone shed some light on this?""

Gotta love the KHL. Now it, too, is threatening to not go to the Olympics if the IOC doesn’t let its players compete under the Russian flag.
The reason for this wrangling, of course, is the massive amount of doping allegations in a slew of international sports around the Sochi Olympics. They’re really mad about it because so much of their national identity is wrapped up in Being Good At Sports.
Whether this happens for real remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see the KHL take its ball and go home. This is the kind of thing you honestly can’t put past them.
I kinda hope the KHL does pull out. The men’s hockey in PyongChang would be horrible! I mean, it’s probably going to anyway, but at least the Russian team would have been really good. How funny would it be if this protest led to the Russians blowing their only legitimate shot at an Olympic gold since the Soviet Union disbanded? (You can bet they’re not counting the unified team medal from Albertville, and I’m not either!)
Anyway, if the Russians pull out, probably like Switzerland or Finland will win. I dunno. It’ll be funny, but also bad.
6. The Bruins
If you play for the Boston Bruins right now, you might want to invest in some bubble wrap.
Brad Marchand is hurt. David Krejci is hurt. Adam McQuaid is hurt. David Backes is hurt. Noel Acciari is hurt. Ryan Spooner is hurt. Anton Khudobin is hurt. That’s seven guys, just hurt right this second, and a bunch of other guys have also missed a number of games.
Their roster has often looked like a mix of Providence and Boston. Not ideal! Of course, even in ideal situations, this isn’t a great team, but who even knows what this team actually is right now? No one, that’s who.
5. Tyler Seguin
Turns out if you live in Texas long enough, you become one of those “You’re in America, so speak American!” guys, even if you’re Canadian.
Hockey’s an international game, buddy. You want to only speak English, go sign up for football. But make sure it’s the American kind or you’re not gonna like what happens!
4. Vladimir Putin
Oh right, I mentioned Russia a little while ago. Hold on, I have a take…
Earlier this year, Randy Newman put out a record called “Dark Matter” and the lead single for it was, oddly*, a good examination of how Vladimir Putin and Russians in general view themselves and their leader. There’s a vanity there, a willingness to continue viewing Russia as a world-bestriding bear that can and should take what it wants, but also that all this self-aggrandizement can and should flow through — but also into — Putin himself.
Putin and the Russian propaganda machine have a vested interest in showing that the Russian president is Just One Man but also the guy who will lead Russia back to its place atop the world’s ladder of power, both militarily and economically. (Obviously a country with its economic eggs in so few baskets as Russia will struggle to get there, but that doesn’t stop the dreaming of a Greater Destiny). That’s why you see so many pictures of Putin without a shirt on — “This guy could beat the hell out of Trump or Obama, no problem!” — but also why he’s sometimes treated so fragilely, as a sort of benevolent but stern father, within Russia itself.
The line to open the Newman song is, appropriately, “Putin puttin’ his pants on, one leg at a time. You mean he’s just like a regular fella? He ain’t nothin’ like a regular fella.”
Which is where Alex Ovechkin’s social media campaign, to vaguely support Putin somehow, comes in. Putin doesn’t need support. It’s still technically unclear whether he will run for another term, but he’s going to run and he’s gonna win with 90-plus percent of the vote easy. Ovechkin has, of course, stated his support for and friendship with Putin on multiple occasions in the past, and all the people who acted shocked by the latest revelation had no actual right to be shocked or concerned. This is business as usual for just about any rich Russian; when was the last time you saw anyone from that country with any sort of power or name recognition speak out against him without promptly being served a polonium salad?
Anyway, pretty funny that Ovechkin starting a social media campaign to lend “support” to a brutal oligarch who does as he pleases got a few days’ worth of headlines and no formal dealings from the league — after all, he said he was not a “politics man.” Meanwhile, JT Brown had to wait three weeks to get in the lineup again, and was publicly scolded by the league, after he raised his fist to protest police brutality. If Brown wanted to be able to get away with doing anything he wanted politically, he should have tried being one of the greatest goal scorers of all time. That makes you bulletproof, baby!
Classic stuff.
*Not odd if you’re a true Newman Head but certainly if you only know his work as “The Toy Story Guy”. And if that’s the case, do your homework! The Newman back catalog is incredible.
3. I guess the Senators?
Okay here’s me breaking down all sides of that big three-way trade, which I think all three teams can count as a W:
Nice for Matt Duchene to get out of Colorado, first and foremost. Goes without saying. He’s going to a team that thinks more highly of itself than it should, but you can’t say the Sens didn’t upgrade from Kyle Turris. Not really a bold take, that, but the Senators are better today than they were on Sunday morning, and the fact that they only gave up a good-ish prospect (Shane Bowers), a salary dump (Andrew Hammond), a protected 2018 first, and a 2019 third ain’t bad.
On the other hand, they only made the trade in the first place because they weren’t going to re-sign Turris, due to how much he would have wanted to stay and how budget-constrained the team is generally. Problematically, Duchene isn’t locked up long-term either. He’s locked up longER-term, sure, but he’s a UFA in July 2019 (and thus not eligible to re-sign until this summer) and who knows for sure if he’ll want to stick around.
It’s really just Pierre Dorion throwing the cap concerns down the road a little. The Sens will have a lot more money to throw around then (they have just $38.8 million committed to nine players for 2019-20 at this point) but nonetheless, it’s a gamble.
2. The Predators
Remember going into the year how we were all like, “Ah, but the Preds need a No. 2 center behind Ryan Johansen.” Well now they have one, and he’s locked up relatively cheap and long-term. He’s not as good as Duchene, who David Poile unsuccessfully pursued for some time, but he’s a huge upgrade over Nick Bonino, their de facto No. 2 so far this year (or would be were he not hurt, which he is).
And yes, Samuel Girard, Vlad Kamenev, and 2018 second is a decent amount to give up for Turris, but this is: a) a team in win-now mode, b) better than giving up a rostered defenseman like Mattias Ekholm or Ryan Ellis.
Girard is probably an NHLer at 19, and posted huge numbers from the blue line in the Q. The Preds don’t exactly need D help, so he was expendable in the grand scheme of things. Likewise, Kamenev is a promising 21-year-old forward who lit up the AHL since he came to North America. Scoring 96 points in 137 career games for a U-21? That’ll play.
Like a lot of the Central, Nashville is kinda shuffling right now, and as long as the competition is doing the same thing, it’s not that big of a deal. Ryan Ellis is out until the new year and Bonino might be another week or two away, but when this roster is fully complete and if the goaltending holds up, this is once again a very scary team.
Anyway, Kyle Turris is a winner here, too, because he goes from the Senators (not good) to the Predators (probably very good), and Nashville is a cool-as-hell place.
1. Joe Sakic? Hold on…..
I would’ve bet a million dollars of Joe Sakic’s money that my man would have punted this trade as he did with Ryan O’Reilly, but nope, there was a huge market for Duchene after all.
To disenfranchise your franchise center as he did for so long, then still get Hammond (who cares), Bowers (a first-round pick in June’s draft), Girard and Kamenev (a pair of second-round picks with impressive extant pedigrees in pro hockey), as well as a first-, second-, and third-round pick? That’s magic. Jeez.
The Avs blue line a few years from now could look very, very good, and that forward depth might be rounded out a bit too, for once.
I honestly can’t believe it. Game gotta recognize game here.
(Not ranked this week: Nathan MacKinnon.
Okay so there was a big loser in all this. Poor Nathan MacKinnon is going through another rebuild that probably won’t be over for a few years. Gotta think he’s, what, 24 or 25 before this team is legitimately good again? And even then: Maybe. This poor kid!)

second son of hall of fame ex falcons qb , miles pierce , and entrepreneur and daughter of a famed manhattan - based art collector , amélie pierce -- rome’s future was pretty non - negotiable since day one . as soon as they could stumble around enough to pass for walking , miles had his sons enrolled in as many football programs as he legally could .
when rome was young , he loved it . the attention , the praise he received for his quickness despite being one of the smallest kids on the field . plus , going to his father’s games and being recognized as miles pierce’s kids was also fun . soon came time for the inevitable retirement on the heel of a downward - trending career , and after that things ... changed .
suddenly , it was less praise and more demands . earlier practices , with his father making rome and his brother run drills until they were sick . suddenly , things that were previously good weren’t good enough , despite how much better his sons continued to be .
as anyone with half a brain could guess , these pressures eventually began to take their toll . with interests in anything else repressed by his father’s insistence that football is and always will be the most important thing in life , rome began to emulate his father’s aggressive attitude , first bringing it to the field and then , more notably , to his personal life . failed relationships , fights at school , sneaking home late absolutely blitzed out of his mind -- none of the behaviors were healthy , but they were enough to take the weight of his father’s hands off of his shoulders , if only for a moment . until papa helicopter parent found out , that is .
tw abuse : despite his sons catering to his every will , miles’ incessant anger began to worsen , and soon a lot of the verbal abuse had started to become physical , too . sure , rome knew that it was wrong , but he also thought that maybe if he’d been better in the game last night , or worked harder at practice , maybe he’d stop .
he made varsity his freshman year of high school and took his team to the state championships , expecting his dad to finally approve of something he’d done . instead , he came home to the news that his mother was leaving -- that his parents were splitting up and that this had been a long time combing . safe to say this mama’s boy ass bitch was devastated.
tw death : his dad only sunk deeper into his madness , but all that anyone else could see is that rome was throwing further , moving faster , and making better plays . a non - football related injury left him with a broken arm , and it was on the way home from the hospital that his father received the call that his ex - wife had taken her own life . devastated part ii , coming soon to a theater near you !
tw drugs , alcohol , general debauchery : the partying worsened . rome had entered a phase in his life where he was looking for something -- anything to completely wipe his mind of any and all thoughts . the drugs , the alcohol , it was all a coping mechanism , but it definitely wasn’t a healthy one . soon , his brother left for college thousands of miles away , and rome found out that that fifth of rum goes down a lot easier after doing a few lines beforehand .
he chose to go to college in georgia not because he wanted to , but because his dad knew that hollingsworth was a great school for scouting attention and that rome wasn’t never too far away to yell at SKDFKJ . in his midst of an extended bender compounded by having training now twice a day everyday on top of college courses , he decided to join pike -- and he absolutely loves it .
he chose to major in psych because he wants to understand why his dad hates him so much SKJFJKS dumb b*tch .
also last summer he may or may not have allegedly accidentally wrapped his masterati around a telephone pole and gotten a dui . in reality , it was his brother , but roman told him to gtfo and he’d take the fall because his bro finally managed to escape his dad and rome didn’t want him to suffer the same fate . it made headlines , but his dad pulled approximately 6 billion strings to get him conditionally reinstated to the team .
spent the summer before his junior year chillin in rehab , but he relapsed shortly after . consistency is key here , kids.
still bender - adjacent , but he’s kept it more lowkey because the nfl draft is coming in HOT .

i know yall get it , he vapes , but he’s definitely the kind of guy to try to keep the party running til 5 am and get pissed when people tell him that maybe he should stop .
he will provoke anyone and anything ( even inanimate objects ) if found in a self - destructive enough mood .
has a notoriously short temper , but what kind of gym rat doesn’t .
manages to still attain a 4.0 ( and in his words , psych is easy ) , so that’s another thing that makes it difficult for him to understand that his lifestyle is ... per se ... problematique .
10000% has sent a plethora of  u up ? texts
kinda gets a little .. hm .. sad sometimes but that’s only after everyone bails from the party n he’s left alone in a dirty ass frat house SDKFSDJK

Prospect Spotlight: Don’t Sleep On Doncic
Tumblr media
by Jake Muller, thetreyball.com
On June 22, 2017, the NBA Draft was held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. 60 players were chosen, including big names like Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball, as well as lesser known players like Jaron Blossomgame and Alpha Kaba. After watching certain players make an impact for their teams in the Summer League, the next thing I look forward to is who is going to be “the guy” in the 2018 NBA Draft. Looking towards next year's draft makes it easy for me to see who the hot potential NBA prospects are, and gives me a good idea of what teams I need to watch during the NCAA season. By most accounts of NBA draft experts, the man that should go number one is Missouri’s Michael Porter Jr. What's not to love about a 6'10'' freak athlete that can seemingly do it all? While Porter is all that and a bag of chips, there is another kid playing pro ball over in Spain, who you may not have heard of, expected to be neck and neck with Porter come draft night. His name, Luka Doncic.
Who is Luka Doncic you ask? Luka, a 6'8'' Slovenian wing playing professionally for Real Madrid in the Spanish League, first broke onto the scene when he signed a five year deal with Real Madrid as a 13 year old. Let that sink in. When I was 13 I still couldn't even dribble with my left hand, and this kid was out signing a deal with one of the best professional teams in the Spanish League. He played for Real on their U-18 team for awhile, and then at the age of 16 years, two months, and two days, he made his debut with Real at the professional level. He became the third-youngest player to debut in the Spanish League, the youngest being NBA veteran point guard Ricky Rubio.
Since being called up, Doncic has impressed many on the international stage. Most people would look at his stat line and not understand why people are hyped up about a guy that averaged 7.8 points per game in Liga ACB. What Doncic has done in limited minutes, on a team that is stacked with former NBA guys with 10 years more basketball experience, is enough to have a sports geek like myself drooling over what he could be in the NBA in five years. So those who choose to look at the stats instead of the potential of Doncic, are really playing themselves.
Tumblr media
What do the experts (and a guy like me) see in Doncic that has us so excited about his NBA future? To start, it already looks like this dude has an elite skill level. He has shown that he can run the point for Real Madrid, which at 6'8'' can be a damn problem for smaller guards trying to check him. He already has shown tremendous court vision and has no problem getting Real Madrid into their sets on the offensive end. Although this is not the position that Luka is projected in the NBA, it never hurts to have an extra guy who can handle the rock, especially when he’s as tall as LeBron James.
In the landscape of today’s NBA, when you’re talking about the guard/forward position, you need a player who can stretch the floor by consistently hitting from long range. In his time with Real Madrid, he has proven to the world that he can not only knock down shots, but do so efficiently within the offense. He converted 59.5% on his two-point shots, 41.9% from the arc, and 83.8% from the free throw line. Looking for a comparable stat line for the wing position in the NBA? Look no further than Klay Thompson. This year, Thompson shot 51.6% on his two point shots, 41.4% on three point shots, and 85.3% from the free throw line. This is a guy that is known as one of the greatest three point shooters in the history of the game, and Luka has proven at 18 that he has the ability to shoot at the level, speaking in terms of efficiency. Scary. So Luka should have no problem transitioning from Spain into the NBA game, because his game is already a model of what coaches and GMs are looking for in today's NBA.
Now that we have gotten through the fact he can play on the offensive end, we have to discuss how he is going to play on the other side of the ball. From film that I have watched, nothing really blows you away as far as his defensive skills go. There were clips when he was guarding smaller point guards, and was able to get blocks on them because of his length/size advantage. He is an average athlete which helps him on defense, but he is not an absolute eye popper with that athleticism. One thing I did really like that he did was that he picked up point guards full court. He showed the ability to work on the defensive end ninety feet, which is the kind of effort one would like to see. It's hard to know for sure if this will translate to the the NBA, as the top guards are much quicker. He has good recovery if he gets beat with the first step which is also promising to see, and is constantly just a grinder. I don't see defense being his strong suit in the NBA, but sometimes will have flashy pin against the backboard blocks. (Que LeBron James videos)
Now that we know what he is about, it is time to look at players he will be compared to the rest of his career. The first player that is going to be brought up a lot when talking about Luka is the aforementioned Ricky Rubio. The big reason why these two will be lumped together will be how they performed well at a young age in the Spanish League and then took their games to the association. People believe that Doncic has the same skill as Rubio being able to distribute the rock with skill and flash. People will also use Rubio as a precautionary warning that Doncic might not be as great in the NBA as scouts think he will be. Rubio had so much hype following the 2008 Olympics, people thought he would be amazing in the NBA. Ricky has not lived up to the expectations, though he’s started showing signs of improvement toward the end of last year. A big difference in their games is that Doncic can knock down shots from the 3 point line, and Rubio can't hit the broad side of barn.
The other player that I have seen comparisons to just because of how polished of a prospect Doncic is LeBron James. Many draft experts see Doncic as the most polished prospect since the likes of LeBron, which is putting him up in some very elite company. I would be quick to stop comparing him to Lebron James, arguably the greatest basketball player to ever do it, but let's dive deeper into why people are starting to make the comparison. Doncic loves to have the ball in his hands, so he can create his own shot or drive and dish to his teammates. Doncic has the size of a traditional NBA Small Forward, but feels that it is easier for him to make the right basketball play with the ball in his hands.
Now, Doncic will never be the athlete that Bron is, will never have the strength that Bron has, and never get to the size that LeBron possesses. He will never be able to have the same rise through the AAU and high school ranks to get the recognition that LeBron did in the United States, simply because he doesn't play here. I am one to believe that if Doncic was playing in America right now, we would constantly be seeing videos of him on Instagram and Twitter. Doncic has impressed against grown men in Spain, just imagine how much he would dominate the high school scene, kind of like how LeBron did. I think their skill levels at age 18 is very similar, and that they both had great feel for the game. But ultimately, comparing a draft prospect to someone of LeBron's stature seems like blasphemy to me.
I don't think that there is a perfect comparison for him, but the players he most closely resembles in the NBA are Gordon Hayward, Mario Hezonja, and Danilo Gallinari. Before you get scared away with the fact that I threw the bust Mario Hezonja in there, let me tell how this all ties in. His frame right now is so similar to Hayward's. Hayward is a better athlete and finisher at the rim, but many feel like Doncic is a better passer. When Hayward played his last season at Butler, he only shot 29% from the three, so Doncic is already blowing that out of the water. As far as comparing him to Hezonja, both are 6'8'' wings that came from the Spanish League. Hezonja is a better athlete than Luka, but that is about all he has. When Hezonja was drafted, he was drafted on purely upside. Luka put up better stats than Mario did in the Spanish League, and has already shown that he is proven. A lot less risk with Luka than there was with Hezonja, a risk that Orlando Magic took, and surely regret. The last player I can see him being like is Danilo, but that is purely just on how they score. Danilo is taller, but loves to shoot and scores in the same ways that Luka does.
With all this being said about Luka Doncic, I would like to throw my two cents in there and say he might be a better prospect than Porter. I am not too convinced that Porter is the clear number one for the 2018 draft, and I really hope that Luka impresses more eyes in his last year with Real Madrid than he already has. I really just want to get to the 2018 Draft already, but I will be patient and ride the Lavar Ball entertainment wave until we get there.

Fanboys, Freddie Hockey and Justin Bieber's sports take (Puck Daddy Countdown)
Tumblr media
NASHVILLE, TN – JUNE 03: Frederick Gaudreau #32 of the Nashville Predators celebrates after scoring a second period goal against Matt Murray #30 of the Pittsburgh Penguins (not pictured) in Game Three of the 2017 NHL Stanley Cup Final at the Bridgestone Arena on June 3, 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)
(In which Ryan Lambert takes a look at some of the biggest issues and stories in the NHL, and counts them down.)
8. The Rinne Haters!!! (again)
Well gang, this time last week we were all saying, “As long as Rinne doesn’t completely crap his pants in Game 2, the Preds should be fine.” And wouldn’t you know it, he crapped his pants like a hundred times, to the point that incredibly smart, cool people who are so handsome were saying, “Well I think you probably gotta go to Juuse Saros in Game 3.”
But then Rinne did a crazy thing: He allowed two goals on 52 shots (.962) and the series is even and everything is fine again. No more controversy! He’s still only .886 in the Cup Final, but Matt Murray is .902, and went .862 in Nashville. So who’s laughing now?
7. Miserable fanboys
And speaking of the whole “Murray looked bad in Nashville” thing, well, it takes a certain kind of psychopathy to start screaming like the sky is falling because the series is…… tied?
See, I understand, the Penguins have not looked good at any point except for those two stretches of three-ish minutes where they scored the bulk of their goals in the series. And even then, those were, as the soccer-likers say, against the run of play. They’re still getting caved in. And if you don’t think injuries are a big reason why, you haven’t been paying attention.
To that end, the Cup Final is progressing more or less how I expected: Predators absolutely raking, but the series is tied because it’s hard to shut down all that talent.
People in Pittsburgh cannot, however, accept this. They want Murray benched. They want a miracle comeback from Letang. They want Mario to come out of retirement (probably). They want Sullivan fired.
Now it’s a best-of-three instead of best-of-seven. And the Penguins are at home twice. It’s not like this is some sort of Horror From The Mind Of Clive Barker.
The hottest take of all is that Crosby and Malkin’s legacies will be tarnished if they somehow don’t drag this banged-up team kicking and screaming to another Cup against a team that’s been perhaps the deadliest in the league since February.
[Follow Puck Daddy on social media: Twitter | Instagram | Facebook | Tumblr]
Man, imagine if Pittsburgh got the results they actually deserved in this series? It’s a sweep. At best it’s 3-1. It would be impossible to talk all those fanboys off all those bridges.
6. Not today with the trade rumors, alright?
A lot of teams have been out of the playoffs for at least a month at this point, and you can see people getting restless. That means we’re dealing with a lot of trade rumors. And I gotta tell ya, folks: Not a fan.
You wanna make a trade, go for it. By all means. But I can’t be bothered to pay attention to whether the Kings might trade a third liner or something. The whole expansion draft is coming up a week or two after the Cup Final ends. We’re gonna have a lot to talk about. Give it a week!!!
5. Freddie Hockey
I feel weirdly bad for Frederick Gaudreau, who has three goals in this Cup Final and had literally never scored in the NHL before that.
My man was just in the ECHL last season and now he’s the big Stanley Cup Hero to date (sorry, Jake Guentzel). But here’s the thing. He has a total of 15 NHL games under his belt. He has 3-1-4 in those 15 games. He’ll probably make the big club next season — or at least get a long look — and that might be when his trouble starts.
He was undrafted. His career high in the QMJHL was only 71 points (believe me, in the Q that’s not exactly a ton). The reason I am nervous for him is that he is building himself a reputation to which he is unlikely to ever live up. We’re talkin’ Dave Bolland status. Ville Leino, maybe. And I feel bad because he is a pure and beautiful boy.
He modestly lit up the AHL the past two years, yes. He had 40 goals and 90 points in 141 games, which is pretty good.
But man, three pretty damn big goals to start your career is a great way to convince everyone you’re the next true genius of the sport. He isn’t.

4. The Round Mound of Watchable Intermission Segments
I said during Game 4 that it’s amazing what a talking head with an actual personality does to make an NHL intermission report engaging and fun. I was wrong to say it. I think Mike Milbury and Jeremy Roenick have personalities. “Dumb old grump” is a personality, right? (Keith Jones is a flat-out boring guy who’s only wrong 60 percent of the time, which makes him the best analyst NBC has.)
But if you watch basketball games, Charles Barkley is a dumb old grump on the NBA intermission shows, too. But he’s a gregarious dumb old grump, and I think that’s the difference. Say what you want about Sir Charles, but he’s always been a Personality first and foremost.
Try as poor Liam McHugh or Kathryn Tappen might, they cannot wring blood (entertainment) from stones (chronically wrong people). How many times do you watch an NBA halftime segment and it’s just Kenny Smith and Shaq making fun of Charles Barkley for being a fat, grumpy dope? More than you’d ever think, that’s for sure.
We remember the times Tappen or, like, Bob McKenzie make fun of Mike Milbury for being a horrible GM, because it’s both funny and true. They are basically winking to the audience: “This man is not qualified to give you even vague platitudes about what teams should or shouldn’t be doing.” And yet they persist on television, turning every segment they touch into grim, skippable affairs that are also occasionally tinged with Cold War-era xenophobia.
There’s a lesson in this. Neither NBC nor the NHL will learn it.
Let’s note here that Carrie Underwood did the segment on the first intermission, and it was also just fine and nice. But the fact that Eddie Olczyk kept calling her “Mrs. Mike Fisher” is some pathetic stuff. Mike Fisher is, what, the 80th-best center in hockey? He’s been in the league since 1999 and still doesn’t have anything close to 300 goals. Meanwhile, Carrie Underwood has 65 million records worldwide since 2007. Mike Fisher’s career high in points is only 53. He’s Mr. Carrie Underwood, and to pretend otherwise is to grossly overrate him in any way, shape, or form.
ON THE OTHER HAND: All this shows you what a sad organization the NHL is. Are you, like, a Q-list celebrity? You will be invited to present at the NHL Awards, guaranteed. The annoying neighbor kid from Small Wonder will be presenting the Vezina this year. And if you’re actually famous, like Charles Barkley is, you will be given a platform to say literally whatever you want about hockey. Barkley could have gone up there and said Sidney Crosby is a vampire (a popular theory that is impossible to disprove) and everyone would have chuckled straight through it.
And how did Barkley get to Game 4? How did he end up on a panel with Wayne Gretzky? Because he said on a national basketball broadcast — something lots of people actually watch — that hockey is good. Man, this is a thirsty-ass league when it comes to literally any amount of attention.
Can you imagine if Tom Cruise or someone like that were a hockey fan? They’d just give him the goddamn Jets.
3. Sticking with it
Hey whaddaya know: If you continually out-attempt, outshoot, and out-chance your opponent — and you also get the benefit of last change and a few bounces to finally go your way — you’re gonna pick up some easy Ws.
And because the Preds haven’t really deviated from their approach, they’ve also made all four of these games pretty fun.
I’m a big fan of this Final. Up-and-down hockey. The league could use more of this.
2. Nashville
Folks, I don’t know if it’s ever gonna work as a hockey market. Not like Winnipeg, where they struggle to sell out a 15,000-seat arena now that the novelty’s worn off and the team still sucks. These Nashville people are all going to go away in like seven or eight years when this team stops being competitive!
I’m from Canada, by the way.
1. The Justin Bieber sports take
Not specifically hockey-related but apparently people were all over Justin Bieber for wearing a hockey jersey that was not his “home team” Toronto Maple Leafs. So Bieber went on this mini-rant on Twitter about it. And it is the purest and rightest sports take I have ever experienced:
I support all sports I'll put ANY jersey from ANY pro team if I'm whack for wearing jerseys they give me out of love then I'm Whack
— Justin Bieber (@justinbieber) June 5, 2017
Leafs above all but other than that u give me ANY JERSEY THAT LOOKS COOL ILL THROW IT ON
— Justin Bieber (@justinbieber) June 5, 2017
I also don't know enough about sports to Really have valid opinion but I do enjoy sports!! And enjoy any high level sports game. Any team
— Justin Bieber (@justinbieber) June 5, 2017
Hell yeah, dude. Hell yeah. Doesn’t matter to me who it is doing the cool stuff in sports, as long as the stuff is cool.
We can all learn a lesson from this. If you don’t like Sidney Crosby because you’re a fan of another team in the same division, you have to ask yourself how being a Flyers/Rangers/Islanders/Devils fan has broken your brain. Because it definitely has.
This goes for any sport. You don’t have to like the fact that the Warriors are running the Cavs out of the Finals, but damn do you gotta respect how ruthlessly they’re operating here. I don’t like the Patriots for their politics, but let’s not act like Tom Brady isn’t the best to ever put a helmet on.
Basically in sports I just want to see elite athletes do amazing stuff I have never seen before. That’s the real thing worth rooting for.
Thank you, Justin Bieber, for saying what needed to be said. Purpose was a perfectly good album. Thanks everyone. Have a nice week.
(Not ranked this week: The bad breath controversy, which I refuse to call Breathgate.
As a means of highlighting just how humorless the NHL is, generally speaking, we literally turned what was a very, very obvious joke from P.K. Subban into a three-day controversy. This league, man. Dumbest in the world.)
