What’s the average lifespan of a clown? How quickly do they mature?

Also I still haven’t gotten my new clown girl yet >:(( I’ve been waiting patiently lol

Hello! Thank you for the question, clowns lifespans vary drastically from breed to breed and their rate of maturity is still under some debate from professionals, but regarding teacup-circus breeds I can offer my knowledge.

Teacups are often assumed to be short term commitments, much like how people see hamsters compared to dogs, but this is false. Teacups don’t typically live quite as long as larger breeds of clown, (scare-clowns, jesters, ect, are known to commonly age into their late 110’s) but they can easily live as long as a human, their average life-span is around 75-85. It’s not certain exactly why this is, there are a multitude of reasons, but even though teacups don’t typically live quite as long as larger breeds, they are still lifelong commitments and most importantly lifelong friends.

As for how teacups mature, it can depend a lot on what their crossed with, so general statements are not hard and fast rules, rather a rough estimate for the majority of teacups. They are typically considered chucklets (clownlets, chuckles, baby clowns, all common names) for the first 1-2 years of their life. This stage is where the most rapid development takes place.

After that they enter the juvenile stage and continue slowly mature until they reach adulthood. Some teacups grow slightly in size during the juvenile stage, some stay the size they reached during their chucklet-hood. That’s one difference between teacups and other breeds, their juvenile stage doesn’t contain major physical development, teacups spend their juvenile stage developing their brains and immune systems. Porcelain teacups develop a hardened shell when they’re chucklets and slowly build up more and more layers over the course of their juvenile stage. This is why younger porcelains heal better than older porcelains.

Once they’ve been through their juvenile stage they reach adulthood and are full-fledged clowns. Like humans, their development doesn’t necessarily come to a complete halt, but all their major changes have been completed and they’ve developed a core personality. Just like us, they will still learn and grow through the course of their whole lives, simply less in the sense of physical growth and more in the sense of personal growth.

During their later years, 50-70, they begin to slow down and become elder clowns. Sometimes they develop respiratory problems and joint issues, which can be managed easily with the help of a vet. Towards the very end of their lives, many experience certain pains because of age-related conditions and require medication. Some people tend to be scared of medicating their teacups because teacups are so small and seem as though their systems might be overwhelmed by medication, but keeping an elderly clown from pain management is needlessly cruel and with the help of a vet teacups will be able to enjoy their last years without trouble.

I won’t go into huge detail about end-of life care for a teacup because that’s a whole other topic that I could write on and on about, but it’s a process determined by you and your clown together.

So that’s the teacup life, roughly outlined, they are incredible creatures and surprisingly not as different to humans as one might think, in terms of lifespan and maturity. ive spoken about it before but i have a bone to pick with a lot of fic regarding nightwing #93 — that a lot of them bend canon to insult other characters (roy, kory, babs) decenter dick from his own trauma to make other characters look better, can sometimes be insincere depictions of assault, etc — so this is like. kinda a response to that

the thesis for persephone and wolf king and all the other (eventual) fics in the series is a graysons nature is to perform, and is an examination of dick graysons legacy. this is gonna be yet another fic about assault as told from someone who isn’t dick, so how can dick remain centred in the story? how does it portray his particular struggles with autonomy and control? how can it be compared with the people in his life — kory and babs have also experienced a profound loss of control and autonomy, etc.

idk i think trying to incorporate the change from dick grayson being a serious monogamist to someone with more partners is also interesting. how would he handle being in a relationship with someone who knows what he was like before, and might be able to accurately deduce what inspired said change? i also think it’s interesting to think about what justice looks like in this context? dick doesn’t want anyone to hurt or kill her on his behalf. he doesn’t want to talk about it. im pretty sure the closest thing we got to an actual confrontation was dick telling bruce about blockbuster in the cave, and bruce dismissing his concerns because he values dick’s life more

like…. what would the actual aftermath be if u kept something buried so deeply for so long and someone knows u enough to find out anyway?

i've a few questions if you want to elaborate hee hee 👉🏻👈🏻

1) so the servant went on the mole quest, then the war started where they got their crest but then they defected? (i'm not 100% on the war/crests lore) (i'm interested in when the crest was given to them)

2) were they part of any of the "known" group of ppl who are the original crest bearers (just didn't make it into the official listing bc of their defection)? (the elites/apostles/saints)

3) the konstantinovs are not highly regarded, is that because of the history of the defecting servant and their bloodline basically still repenting for it?

AND 4) when dorian doesn't want to touch skin-to-skin anymore after accidentally activating the crest clinging to his mother, did he accidentally like...steal life from her or? (i feel like that was implied bc the crest is activated through touch but i wanted to make sure i don't misunderstand)

i'll put my answers under a cut so i can go ham w/them >:3

1) yeah! constantine acquired the crest along with the ten elites and was basically treated as an honorary noble (but still not quite on par with the rest of them!) for a lot of the war. just the act of betrayal weighed so heavily on them that i think they probably begged seiros to kill them and end their suffering after they defected - as if she would let them off that easy after what they did lol. i do think there was something they did that makes their crest a bit different, probably to do with blood. maybe a transfusion or something like that.

2) yes! they were in fact a stablehand that served under blaiddyd, that's the kernel of truth in the story that has been passed down through the family (after the church rewrote history) and rather than be named among the others as heroes, one of constantine's final requests was that the family not be included; thus they are known only as faithful servants of the church and the goddess who were elevated after the war.

3) and yeah! you hit the nail on the head lol - they're more like noble/holy knights than royalty. in fact i think the family ties to the church are so close that members have often served as soldiers at the monastery, and it is customary for the archbishop to meet every new member, be they child or spouse.

4) that is what i was going for yes! i'm leaving it ambiguous whether or not dorian's use of his crest led to her dying; i don't think dorian himself knows the truth. after being rescued, they were both taken to house konstantinov to recover. dorian had a terrible fever, and by the time it broke he was informed that his birth mother had returned to the alliance - without him. whether or not that is a lie, dorian chooses to believe it and has never demanded his father or stepmother reaffirm it; the thought that he drove her away due to his crest is more comforting than the idea that he killed her with it.

5. Describe their cozy night in.

pierre sees one of those 'tin fish date night' things on his instagram reels (not even tiktok because he's on those ig reels constantly) and he thinks that yuki would probably like that-- right?? and they've both been really busy and working recently. he goes to the grocery store and looks for the best ones, tries to find the ones that he saw in the reel but some of them aren't there and the ones at the store he's like well-- the packaging is really pretty. so maybe they'll be good!

he gets fancy wafer crackers, and doritos, and a couple cheeses too and then takes them all home and sets up their table rlly nice. yuki's working later than he is, has been sending pierre photos close up of his face looking tired/meh all day. pierre lights a couple candles and makes the whole set up, very pinterest!

yuki gets home and is like, dumping his bag by the front door and toeing off his shoes and calling out to pierre "godd you wouldn't believe what happened at work today, this guy was being so annoying and--" and then he walks in and he stops and is like "oh my god. tinned fish! did that trend just reach you on reels hahahaha" and he comes over and kisses pierre and is like "thank you, wow this is really nice!" and then they set up KUWTK on the tv and eat and have gay sex or whateverr

8. What happens if one of them gets sick?

yuki is soo bossy when he gets sick! hes like pierre i need that pillow yes that exact one to hold me up. also can you go to that one chinese place i like to get their wonton soup its the best one. also come cuddle me and watch netflix-- you can't say no! youuu got me sick! you won't get sick again (pierre does get sick again but he doesn't mind because he feels really weird not just, like, being around yuki)

18. How likely are they to have fur babies? How many and what kind?

they get one cat who they spoil sooo much, they do that whole like raw feeding-best diet thing, where its like kibble + wet food + duck feet + quail egg + supplements etc. etc. they could set up a successful fuckin, asmr pet feeding account if they wanted. they airtag her collar even though she's an indoor cat because they both like to know where she is. pierre puts hats on her and posts her on his ig allll the time. yuki stops him from making a dedicated instagram profile for her. later on they get a new small kitten and at first socialising them with each other is such an ordeal but the kitten bullies the older one into liking her hahaha

As someone who has been to the international museum of cryptozoology- actually most of them. I don’t think any of them are supernatural in anyways I think they are just animals we don’t understand yet!

23. how do you feel about chilly weather?

I don’t particularly like chilly but I’ll take being cold over being hot. I don’t mind layering (flannels are my best friend). And my body just cannot deal with heat. Plus I’m super used to chilly up until pretty recently I lived in Ohio so I’m acclimated.

34. is there a song you know every word to by heart?

So many songs. There’s way too much headspace dedicated to song lyrics. I still know all the lyrics to The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny for some ungodly reason.
