A universe brimming with dreams

“I can’t help but think,” Fyodor says mildly, “that you’re up to something.”

“And you’d be absolutely right, of course, but that’s hardly new,” Dazai replies, stretching so that his head hangs upside-down off the couch arm. Sitting like an actual civilized person on the chair across the room, Fyodor raises an eyebrow at him. Dazai pouts. “I don’t want to give away the entire game this early in the game, Fyodor!”

“So you are planning something convoluted,” Fyodor says, mouth stretching into half a smile. “I’d wager that it has to do with the girl you picked up a month ago.”

“Well, obviously,” Dazai mumbles, slumping back down. It’s so strange to look at Gin and see a version of her that’s years younger than he remembers her. “What else would all this be for?”

Fyodor says, “aren’t you the little martyr, saving one girl and leaving the rest to die,” and Dazai nearly quips back, it’s better than a vampire plague, before he remembers that it’s years too soon for him to have a hint of that plot of theirs. Instead, he sits up and grins at them.

“Call it the goodness of my heart,” he beams. Fyodor sighs, but they’re smiling, regardless. Of course they know that Dazai does not do anything out of the goodness of his heart.

Dazai considers telling Fyodor about his plan—they’d believe him, for one thing, given they most certainly know a thing or two about singularities. They might even help him fine-tune it—

—if, from the very start, they hadn’t considered his fierce anger over Odasaku silly and a weakness he hasn’t been able to snip. In another life, Dazai hides out from both crime and the punishment to be doled out if the other side catches him and meets Fyodor on the sly, pretends not to care about their little comments regarding Odasaku and Ango; in this life, he prioritizes only one thing.

Across every universe, across multiple realities, this is the only one where he has a chance to save Odasaku. He only has one chance. One shot.

That’s why he grins and instead of giving away vital information that Fyodor will pick up on in a few years’ time, he tells them, “my plans always work out, you know. You’re going to have a hard time moving ahead with your world dominating. I have all the chess pieces in place.”

Fyodor is hardly fazed. “Oh, Dazai-kun,” they say, fond, amused, “you’re mistaken if you think you can stop me. My plans stretch so much farther than you can even conceive—and yet, you’re the only one who has a hope of untangling them.”

Dazai thinks of the vampire outbreak, of clinging to Chuuya in relief that the plan had worked, of nails digging into his skin in Meursault. Of an apple and a knife in the back.

Who’ll be left standing, in the end, when Dazai is gone?

“I’m so excited to see, Fedya,” he croons, “who the winner is.��

Camilla finds Selena amid all the chaos. She wants to collapse from relief. She forces herself to remain standing.

"Selena." Her voice is commanding, but warmth edges in. "I'm glad to see you're ok." She wants nothing more than to swoop down and embrace her darling retainer. She's pretty sure the bruises on her rips won't let her, but more importantly it's not what Xander would do.

She takes a shaky breath, and then a shaky exhale. "I need you to stay with Elise. Keep her safe at all costs." She clenches her jaw for a moment, so tight her teeth might crack.

"I don't know where Xander and Leo are and I cannot bare to lose Elise in the meantime. I need eyes and a shield on her at all times."

The sound of Camilla’s voice will find Selena’s ears. This, Selena is sure of. Though it is not often that an order or command is met with spirit nor affection, she lights up at her lady’s presence. 

“I got it, I got it,” she pouts, as if she intended to go find Elise all along. Immediately, her relaxed posture is replaced by assertiveness and intent in her movements.

As she passes Camilla by, she hears her lady’s heavier breathing. She smells her lady’s perfume permeated with the smoke of the night, and the carnage of battle. It’s far from uncommon, but Selena can’t help but want to offer her help. One step past, she turns around, going so far as to place one gloved hand on her lady’s shoulder. It wasn’t her place, as a retainer; but hadn’t Camilla herself blurred such lines of their relationship long ago?

“I’ll get some extra bandages for you, too.” It isn’t a suggestion, nor a favor. Selena will do this for her lady, as easy as breathing. Her voice doesn’t crack, but with how much worry and energy she’s expended, it might as well have. She pauses a moment longer, searching for a response from within the familiar lavender locks at the back of her lady’s head, then continues on.

this has really transformed over the years, but usually what I end up doing is making comments alongside my work as I write, then collating those into something useful and eventually entirely rewriting the work. it is deeply unfortunate that I firmly believe the only way to truly revise is to rewrite but you simply can't get past surface-level edits without rewriting!

✎ how do you think readers would guess a fic was yours if you posted anonymously?

ooh a tough one! I think my style of kind of prolonged, comma-heavy sentences when characters are experiencing an emotion would point to me, especially when combined with my inability to not describe the weather in almost every single scene

I like that idea!

I'm not good at poetry... at all. And while I'm not great at it, I think writing haikus (whether English or Japanese) would be a fun way of getting out of my writing drought! Let the creativity flow!!

"Bird in the Garden" is the working title of the Kessam fic. I plan to post the first chapter tomorrow (god help me) two of my favorite scenes as sneak peeks under the cut

Don't expect too fast updates, I'm mainly posting it for validation (I know I shouldn't, and I get plenty from my friends, but I don't want to sit and write like 25 chapters of slice of life only for people to hunt me down in the streets AKSJAKSJ) but also just to dip my toes into writing and publishing fanfic again. A large percent of what I've written in my writing career goes largely unpublished and sitting collecting dust and I want to try and see if I still have the spark. I haven't published a new fic in... I think 3 years now or so beyond something like oneshots, so I want to see how it feels again without waiting around (plus I haven't published an oc x canon fic in a much longer expanse of time, as cringe culture decimated me and it's detrimental effects on me still lingers to this day)

I hope everyone who has interest in my silly blorbos I make kiss will stick with me. What I have written so far I'm proud of and I really hope it'll be a good fic to serve up as a warm meal. Thank you to the friends so far who have read any percentage of this fic and still found it interesting, yall know who you are and I appreciate you so so much.
