As a costume designer I love Scully’s S9 descent because it is literally a descent. On the most practical level she’s not dressing strictly professional anymore, so we get more street clothes (ie: cool leather jackets.) She’s also emotionally so done and so closed off. Hence the turtlenecks and dark colors (sooo much gray, black, burgundy.) Her wardrobe strikes me as utilitarian and armor-like. She’s not having fun. She’s not here to flirt. The love of her life is God knows where and even knowing where won’t help either of them so she’s here raising their son just in case it’s the last link she has to Mulder for the two of them. Her clothing is here to do two things: protect and get the job done. She looks badass but also so tired of it all. She was never one to express herself through her clothing before, but we got hints and whiffs of sexuality with the silky professional button downs unbuttoned j u s t lower than office appropriate while running around bagging and tagging aliens with Mulder, and her suits which were professional but also fucking hot. Now its turtlenecks all the way down and leather trenches, and it’s like my girl is not here to play she’s here to SLAY and she means mostly the kind when folks end up dead. Girl is ready to cut a bitch in those clothes.

s9 finale really felt like the conclusion paragraph of a high schooler’s essay when their english teacher told them to go back and summarize the paper using one line about each body paragraph. like chris carter went “in conclusion evolution and abductions and black oil and alien rebels and shadow government and super soldiers. the end !” and expected people to be satisfied with it?

SPOILERS FOR X-FILES SEASON 9

ok so CONTROVERSIAL X-FILES OPINION:

i really think that season 9 is at its best when the scully/mulder/william plot takes a backseat. i feel like the super-soldier element for william comes out of nowhere and really ruins their arc, which wrapped up really nicely in the season 8 finale.

i really wish that CC had just let that be, and really given a chance for reyes and doggett to learn how to take over the x-files. episodes where scully has more of a mentorship or even just friendship role in the story flow a lot nicer than the ones where they’re bending and warping her story, motivations and character to fit the overall plot. 4-D and john doe have been my favorite episodes this season because they really focus on john and monica, and their issues with taking over the x-files’ odd jobs, as well as the emotional toll they have, with scully only showing up to interject occasionally.

i really REALLY hated provenance/providence because i honestly could not give less of a fuck about the william story and how it relates to mulder and his not being there. i know that it must have probably been weird for audiences in the early 2000s to tune in to the show and to have mulder gone, but i really think they could have had a season 9 that worked better with and around his absence, rather than constantly reminding the viewers that he’s gonna come back at the end of the season. idk. that’s just me.

trying to get through season 9 of the X-Files is hard... i miss Mulder... and like, i don't hate Doggett & Reyes, but they really don't have the same dynamic as Mulder & Scully
