@twizzlerheathen The researcher you're talking about (who I'm assuming is either Mech, Smith, or some of the others who retired within recent years) concluded, along with input from other members of the research team, that wolves do this because they try to avoid inbreeding, so I don't consider it as something wolves look for preference wise, if that makes sense.

Basically, if I were to cut it down simply, chances are most wolves in YNP who happen to be dominant for a black coat are more closely related to other wolves with a black coat. This isn't always the case of course, as genetics can be funky, but this can often lead to wolves veering towards other potential mates the are either not related to them or are very far removed, which usually is gray coated wolves. Y'know, Punnett square and all that.

It's a bit hard to explain but if I have time later I'll see if I can post an article I have that was based off of the study :) If you have the exact study this is based on though I'd love to see it! I've heard of it in passing via books and stuff but I don't think I've seen the actual study.

are there certain traits wolves find attractive in other wolves? fur colors, tooth condition, size, etc. I know birds have preferences so I’m wondering if it’s the same with wolves

Hmmmmm not really. With birds (and correct me if I'm wrong) they look for certain attributes, like color, right? With wolves it's more along the lines of what's around and what's not. By that I mean if a wolf is looking for a mate it depends on what wolves are in their area; are their other dispersals around? Perhaps there are some courtable wolves in another nearby pack?

I guess you could say maybe, since there's some evidence of certain wolves leaning towards mates with specific traits. There are definitely wolves that have shown preferences to certain potential mates over others, but I think that's still something we're trying to figure out the 'why' for!

How’s the burn doing?

It's healed really well, actually! I was super nervous because everyone thought it was going to get worse overnight, but we treated it super quickly with aloe and burn cream; So we were able to stop anything too severe from happening. It's been about two and a half days now and it's almost fully healed besides some minor scarring that will fade over time.

Heads up, whooping cough vaccines have something called waning immunity and adults that can safely take it should look into a one time booster shot

Good information for people to have! And also side note: getting whooping cough as a kid does not grant you immunity to it. You can in fact get whooping cough multiple times, which was not something I was aware of until I found myself in the midst of an outbreak and my doctor told me to basically avoid anyone with kids or my immune system would be toast.

Fortunately I was required by US law to redo a lot of my vaccines (like MMR) during my immigration process, which means I’m protected from the current resurgence of measles we’re seeing throughout the populace thanks to anti-vaxxer propaganda. But not so fortunate when it comes to things like flu or whooping cough :(

Could you elaborate a little on the ‘98 Godzilla movie and how it hates its own genre please? I’m not looking for like an essay or anything, I’ve just never had the chance to be exposed to a lot of monster movies despite my love of them. So I’m a little lost and clueless.

Rewatch that movie and count all the times the characters say that what is happening is stupid and ridiculous.  Spoilers: it’s a lot.  They even do it when they’re in imminent danger, showing a complete story-breaking disregard for their own lives, because the peril they’re facing matters less than pointing out how stupid the whole scenario of a giant monster attack is.

And this is intentional on the film-makers part - every interview with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin is full of them talking about how stupid they think monster movies are, how inherently flawed they think the concept is, and that they only chose to do the movie because they liked the challenge of trying to spit-shine a turd.  It was made by people who hate monster movies, and the end result is an incredibly caustic and condescending parody that hates the genre it’s lampooning.

This doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie, necessarily - but it does mean I’m never going to be able to like it, because it actively hates something I love and won’t stop reminding me of that hatred.
