nicky + the twins headcannons

andrew was a little blindsided by nicky taking custody. after tilda passed, andrew was expecting to go back into the system and he was ready to fight tooth and nail to stay with his brother and keep them both safe, or make luther and maria regret taking them in everyday the twins spent under the hemmick's roof.

andrew gave nicky a really wide berth for a really long time. in his mind, an adult man he doesn't know flies halfway across the world, leaving behind what sounds like a happy life, to get two underage boys alone in a house with him. at first, there's no "this is my cousin, this is my family." he doesn't know this person. he's never known this person. but he knows nicky's father. and andrew doesn't want that person alone with his brother.

neither twin really thought nicky was going to be a good guardian. both were expecting to fend for themselves a lot more than they ended up having to.

nicky spends the first several weeks cataloging every little detail about the twins that he can. aaron likes spicy food, andrew does not. andrew tears all his food into tiny pieces for some reason and aaron eats like a normal human being. andrew has a major sweet tooth. aaron also likes sweets, but prefers salty snacks. both twins always seem to be cold. both twins like to color-code things. both twins are right-handed and have horrific handwriting.

all the twins' teachers tell nicky that the boys are incredibly smart but don't seem to engage with their full potential. andrew excels at english and writing based classes while aaron flourishes in math and science.

nicky bakes a (pretty okay) cake for the twins birthday and presents it at breakfast. it's the first time someone actually bakes aaron a birthday cake.

nicky would purposely say or do things to get negative attention from the twins because he saw the way they would make eye contact across the room/the table when nicky would annoy them. he decides that letting them have a common enemy may help bring them a little closer than making an enemy out of each other.

it's nicky that teaches the twins to drive.

nicky remembers the first time each twin chose to spend time with him. aaron sat down beside him and silently watched the show nicky was finishing. andrew helped nicky clean up the kitchen on their birthday after nicky made them the cake.

twinyards hc that aaron has a shit memory and so before his bio exams (tons of vocab) andrew makes associations for him with stupid insults to help him remember.

aaron doesn’t realize the first few times, until he’s blanking on an exam and randomly thinks of a time where andrew made a comment about kevin needing to grow a spine or he’d give him spondylolisthesis and his notes on vertebrae conditions come flooding back

One night, Aaron FaceTimes Andrew, and he is sobbing, but before Andrew can ask what’s wrong or even panic, Aaron flips the screen to show the twins and asks them who is who. They say their names, and then Aaron says no, and they just giggle and tell him not to be silly; they know their names, and Aaron’s like, clearly not, and then asks again, and they switch names. Aaron flips the camera back around, telling Andrew they’ve been doing it for hours, and he can’t tell them apart anymore. When Andrew asks where Katelyn is because she has never once mixed the twins up in their three years of life, Aaron flips the screen again, and Katelyn is laughing so hard on the other side of the couch that she's not even making noise anymore. Neil literally almost pees his pants because he’s laughing so hard, as well, and Andrew, after telling Aaron who’s who because Andrew has even the most minuscule difference memorized, he tells the twins to keep up the good work and then hangs up.

ok now i know we talk about andrew finding out about tilda abusing aaron a lot but like. what about nicky

what about nicky hemmick coming home from germany, determined to do nothing but go back there as soon as possible, convinced there's nothing left for him in south carolina and then. and then. there's this kid. there's his cousin who he hasn't seen in years, who just moved out, and he comes round for dinner with them now and again, with or without his mom. and aaron flinches when doors slam too loudly and aaron doesn't talk much and nicky watches aaron do what he used to do– try and play a part, try and be better because surely, surely, after everything, if he's just better, then they'll take care of him, won't they? then they'll love him? and every time aaron goes home nicky wants to make up an excuse for him to have to stay the night but he seems to be more scared the longer he's away from his mother. and nicky sees aaron wearing long sleeves all year round, and he never talks like he's fully hearing what's being said, and nicky hears from his parents that aaron's in fights, aaron's in trouble with the cops again, aaron got suspended from school again, aaron's new bruises are from exy, obviously, he plays such a violent sport and just.

did nicky know, and was he angry that his parents seem to ignore it? or did he not realize what tilda had been doing, did he maybe not see the full extent of it until he moved in with the twins and andrew made aaron come off the drugs? how angry was nicky with himself, for not doing something more, with his parents,for never saying anything, sometimes even justifying it, with tilda, for turning this kid into broken pieces?

nicky spent so much time trying to hold the twins together but i wonder if he ever looked at aaron and thought he didn't make it to them in time.

Aftg hc of the month:

Andrew and Aaron playing video games together. Now I don't mean competitive games but the games that make you want to cry, scream and maybe jump off a cliff while you are at it. There are plenty of options they can play, but because they being they, choose cuphead. Andrew and Aaron at 3 am, burrowed comfortably into beanbags and running on spite and hot chocolate. Aaron who has tossed his controller 13 times across the room ; Andrew as calm as ever on outside but, internally planning a first degree arson if he has to look at one more flashing 'you died'. At like 5.30 Neil goes to leave for his run, finds the twins with identical scowls as they mechanically start yet another round that last for 40 sec and then die and restart again. It's almost painful to watch but the twins are so committed that it seems wrong to disturb them.

what if andreil having supports outside of each other… it does not minimize their relationship but in fact makes it healthier…

like andrew waking from a nightmare and he needs to talk to aaron. he just needs to know his brother is there, hear his voice, and then he can be done with it. or, so very rarely andrew and nicky take a trip to the columbia house, just them, for alone time away from the team (or for nicky, calling erik time), staying in their respective rooms and away from one another, but a few times a day they both emerge and cross paths and andrew will need to listen to nicky’s mindless joy ranting about everything in the world.

or neil is having a panic attack and he just really has to talk to matt! they both know comforting isn’t always andrew’s thing and every once in a while neil needs some more conventional care. he just needs to stay with wymack again for a couple days when he’s sick, and have abby tend to him and kevin stop by to argue with him about his health but also to make sure he’s taken care of properly. to walk him through delirious fever induced conversations about the nest...

personal hc is that aaron wears glasses to study. like clear ones or thin rimmed and large. will not leave the house wearing them until he's squinting to see billboards in his final year (SINCE WHEN DO YOU WEAR GLASSES????)

andrew needs them too but you will never catch that diva wearing them. i don't think he's even bought a pair after getting the prescription (I can goal tend, kevin, I do not need to see who is shooting)

when i started reading aftg fanfics, i was genuinely so startled that everyone wrote Aaron as homophobic. Like it had never even crossed my mind for him to be homophobic. I always interpreted Aaron as very younger-sibling-esque and he thought Andrew and Neil's relationship was gross bc

a) my brother is kissing someone?? Gross!!

b) neil isn't trustworthy and their relationship came on at a really vulnerable time for andrew

c) andrew so obviously loves neil and he's never loved me like that

I would always hc that Katelyn refuses completely to let Andrew push himself away from Aaron, and she refuses to let Aaron push himself away from Andrew.

Like don't get me wrong the twinyards go to therapy and they work on their relationship, and they get better but still once they both graduate they are kind of shitty at communicating so they don't call or talk to each other as often as they should. And that's when Katelyn comes in— Katelyn who always makes sure Aaron texts Andrew on weekends, Katelyn who invites Andrew and Neil to dinner, Katelyn who just utterly and stubbornly refuses to let go of her new family.

Cause whether she likes it or not, whether Andrew likes it or not, they're a family.

Aaron has been trying to get Andrew to stop smoking for years and years to no avail. He complains about it every time he talks to Andrew. If they are around each other, Aaron always comments on how Andrew smells like smoke; he's smoking too much, and the house will have smoke damage even though Andrew never smokes inside. If they are Facetiming and Andrew lights a cigarette, Aaron hangs up. It's a whole thing. Aaron tries everything to get him to stop. He even got Neil to agree to help get Andrew to at least cut back. Nothing works.

Until Aaron calls Andrew and tells him that Katelyn is pregnant, Andrew throws his brand new pack in the trash immediately after they hang up, picks up a pack of gum, and starts sucking on lollipops so frequently Neils thinks Andrews tongue will forever be blue.

By the time the Twins were born, Andrew has not smoked a single cigarette in almost six months. Three weeks after the girls are born, Andrew shows up on his brother's front porch. Aaron doesn't even get to say hello before Andrew pushes past him, the slightest bounce in his step.

“I haven't had a single smoke in six months. Give me a baby.”

Random ass aftg hc but the twins hate lavender scented things (bc I hate lavender scented things) but only Aaron has publicly made it known that he hates it so Andrew gets a lavender scented air freshener for the car and the dorm and once even used a lavender scented body wash (only once bc he has limits to what he'll handle to piss Aaron off) so everyone thinks Andrew likes it until Neil just asks and Andrew goes "fuck no. Aaron's reaction is simply amusing

The Minyard hcs?

So, all these hcs started because I asked my friend this — so Nicky is a Hemmick but Aaron and Andrew are Minyards. Again, Luther is a Hemmick but Tilda is a Minyard. They're maternal cousins so it means Tilda married and changed her surname to Minyard but where's Mr. Minyard? (Nora we need answers)

What if Tilda was the black sheep of the family, then she met Mr. JM/MJ Minyard, he shows interest in the mess that is Tilda Hemmick. He sometimes goes to church when he’s in town (even though he's an atheist) because of his grandad. Luther hates his guts and that’s good enough in Tilda’s book. Technically, she only started dating him because her brother hates him, and it helps that he's cute with a smartass mouth so it’s a win.

Mr. M’s a good man, a soldier, and most importantly he's serious about Tilda (he helped her get off drugs, leave her toxic family, cut off her 'friends'). Entertaining his advances and finally falling for him was the best dumb thing that Tilda Hemmick did in her gray dull life. Eventually, they marry.

Too bad they didn’t get to enjoy their honeymoon, too soon Mr. M gets called because hello? he’s in the military. He gets deployed somewhere, only for Tilda to find out she's pregnant a few days after she got the letter saying condolences because Mr. M died (or is he?) after protecting someone from his squad.

Tilda was devastated, she didn't know what to do. She really wanted to keep their baby, their twins, because they're the remaining connection she has with Mr. M but how? Should she keep them? Can she keep them? She already tried that, hold onto someone, and what happened she lost him anyway.

She's a dumb self-sabotaging bitch, but she decided she didn't want to abort them. She wanted them to live, in her grief she wanted a part of him and her to exist in this goddamned world – the twins are a part of him as much as they are a part of her. Selfishly, she thought they were the only proof that someone did love her, truly.

But after she gave birth, when she saw the twins, she couldn’t, oh no – she wouldn’t look at them – they look so much like him. Realization hit her; the twins will be nothing but a remainder of the love she wanted so badly to deserve but still lost.

So, she gave them up and left the hospital.

But when she got home, he’s everywhere, they’re everywhere. (His jacket, his car, their photos, the baby clothes, the unfinished crib). The guilt wouldn’t leave her, she didn’t know any better, so she went back and got one baby and never looked back.
