Radical Authenticity

Yesterday, I reconnected with one of my favorite people. I'd honestly assumed that I'd lost him forever, no differently than if he'd died. The fact that we reconnected now, I feel, is no coincidence. When we first met, on Tumblr, I was very active within the "Tumblr Writing Community" (TWC), as was he. What I wouldn't know at the time was that I would develop some of the strongest and most long-lasting relationships of my life through the TWC. It took an extended period away from Tumblr to realize what Tumblr had given to me, and what I needed, now, to create for myself in my life. During a transitional period of my life, as I was looking back, turning things inside out, trying to figure out where I went wrong because I just didn't believe that existence was meant to be such a existential struggle, I realized that over the 17 years I'd lived in Nashville, Tennessee, the closest relationships I'd had were with people I'd met on Tumblr. Many of them became friends (or even lovers) of mine IRL, but most of them remained virtual—although their virtuality makes them no less real. What Tumblr gave me was a safe space where I could be not just my authentic self, but my ideal authentic self—the person I really wanted to be. It gave me space to experiment and play around in the margins of that self, keeping the things that I loved and tossing what didn't work for me. I made such powerful connections on Tumblr because I was committed to a sort of radical authenticity that I did not yet have the courage to embody in real life. The difference, I realized looking back, was a matter of tense. I didn't have the courage then—but maybe I do now. Courage is a funny thing because you never think about it beforehand. You're not, like, faced with a decision and go "I'm gonna do the courageous thing!" No, you do what you think is right, you do what you feel you need to do. Courage isn't something you have—it's a judgement placed on your actions by other people. Why did I say judgement? Because people only talk about courage when they talk about somebody doing something that they either know they wouldn't do or doubt very seriously they would do if they were in the same situation. So they assign the mythical to give themselves an out. Such courage, they'll say. I'm afraid I'm not nearly as brave as that. So humble. Saying something requires courage, or bravery, means that you don't have to dig into your core values to figure out why you wouldn't have the same instincts, why you wouldn't follow the same path, why you wouldn't put your ass on the line for something you believe in. Like I said, they give themselves an out. The thing is, when you recognize that, something happens that stops holding you back from doing the thing you needed to be doing all along. And what I needed to be doing was being radically authentic, to myself and others, and let all of me shine out into the world instead of holding myself back and making myself small so other people would feel more comfortable. It's been a busy time of year for me, so I haven't been writing much at all in the past...three weeks or so? I have been slowly picking away at some Ava/Nat nonsense ever since the side of the Wayhaven fandom I'm on starting going nutty about Ava in a collar and being called a good girl (which I loved).

Faery WIP / The Overgrowth / These Dark and Lovely Woods

After her mother’s passing, Sidra Carver has become a shell of a person, living alone in the woods away from society. Her remaining joy is her stepsister, the kind and bright Sinéad, whose love keeps Sidra from losing herself to the forest. That changes when Sinéad is violently stolen by her own fiancé, the mysterious Lord Thorne. A spell forces everyone but Sidra to forget Sinéad’s very existence, making Sidra the only one willing and capable of traveling beyond the iron wall and into the dangerous lands of the fae. But two axes and a brutal temper won’t be enough to help Sidra deal with the prideful and vindictive fae without falling prey to their ruthless politics.To navigate their machinations without losing her life, Sidra needs help from one of their own. Elf Marriage WIP / Nettle and Song

To strengthen the new alliance between the nations of elves and humans, the elven prince Androel and the human not-quite-princess Theodosia are reluctantly convinced to marry. But their begrudging acceptance of their circumstances is not enough to make them like each other. Trust is difficult when they both carry a secret the other cannot know: Teddy is the champion of a goddess, made to suppress her magic lest she threaten her stepfather's rule, while Roel struggles with a desperate thirst for Teddy's blood.

- Personality -

on first impression he appears as a sarcastic little shit because he's not much of an outgoing person, and socialising isn't his forte, not that he cares to do any efforts about that.

but once he finally feels safe enough to let his guard down it's easy to realise he has a huge heart too soft for his own good and he'd do anything for the people close to him, even if it means putting his own life on the line.

although he is very serious, he loves to joke around if the opportunity presents itself, and it's pretty easy to make him laugh.

mind you he's shit at socialising but if there's one thing he's good at, it's flirting. he thinks he can flirt his way out of any situation, but that can sometimes make it hard to decipher if he's being sincere about his feelings or not.

- Relationships -

Adam: they had a really hard time getting along when they first met, as neither of them was having the other's shit, but they quickly realized that they both had a real interest in their job and were really invested, thus gaining each other's respect and more... Jonah was very aware of his attraction towards Adam, but he wasn't going to act on it at first, because he wasn't sure he was ready for a relationship just yet, but seeing as the attraction just kept growing he started flirting with Adam to see if maybe, there could be something more between the two of them and let's be honest, openly flirting with Adam is hilarious, but it backfired when he fell for the stern vampire. He's not the slightest frustrated with Adam being back and forth about his feeling, well maybe just a tad but, because of what he went through with Bobby, he can understand how terrifying it can be to start a relationship, so he doesn't really mind, and it also gives him time to get used to the idea of a relationship himself. His nickname for Adam is mon amour (my love)

Nate: meeting Nate was a whole other story. He couldn't deny that he was definitely attracted to Nate, and Nate made it really hard to deny the fact that the attraction was mutual. Now, Jonah hadn't dated since Bobby, he had a flings, but nothing ever serious, so Nate being as open about his feelings as he is, was very unsettling to Jonah because he wasn't used to that, so when Nate made it clear that he wanted it to be something serious, Jonah panicked because he has feelings for the vampire, but he's not sure he's ready for a relationship quite yet, so he pulled a A move on Nate, until he figured out, that yes, it's scary, and yes, he really wants more with Nate. But when he got with Nate, he made it clear that he also had feelings for Adam, he gave Nate time to process it all and I hc that Nate eventually helped him win Adam over. He also had a really hard time with Nate because of the whole Rebecca thing. His nickname for Nate is joli coeur (literally it translate to 'pretty heart' but it's usually used to refer to someone as a huge flirt)

Mason: his bestie. It was kind of a friends at first sight type of encounter for these two, it was like a silent agreement that they’d have each other’s back from the moment they met.

Felix: the fact that Felix wasn’t a single bit intimidated by him put him off at first and he didn't know how to react around him, but he quickly won him over by cracking up the funniest jokes. Now he absolutely adores Felix as he’s so easy to get comfortable with.

Also he's an enabler so nothing good ever comes out of these 3 being in the same room together.

Rebecca: his relationship with Rebecca definitely isn’t the best, to say the least. Her constant going away contributed to their poor relationship, and he resents her a lot for that because he deeply suffered from it. She's one of the main reasons he has so much trouble trusting people, because he's scared they’ll just leave him at some point like she did. He's decent to her at work because he considers that Unit Bravo doesn't have to witness their relationship issues. He's not yet sure if he'll ever be able to forgive her for all that she did, or more precisely for what she didn't do.

Rook: he has a couple memories of his dad that he really cherishes and he kept a lot of Rook's stuff to feel closer to him.

Verda: these two became friends the second they met each other. Jonah being a science-minded guy he was really interested in Verda's work although he's more tech inclined. Verda also became kind of a father figure for Jonah.

Tina: he met Tina in his first year of uni and although they didn’t click right away, due to Tina’s bubbly personality and Jonah’s not very social behaviour, they became great friends thanks to Tina’s perseverance and her support everytime Jonah needed it. Their relationship is all based on queer people supporting each other: they stood up for the other, went through their first heartbreaks together and Tina helped Jonah get out of his relationship with Bobby.

Bobby: he was one of the first people accepting Jonah’s polyamory, although he took advantage of that way too often to cheat on Jonah. The first few months of their relationship were amazing and Jonah was relieved by how open Bobby was with his polyamory and the couple flings he had when they were together, but he realized after a long time that Bobby wasn’t fine with it at all and that he was just using it to sleep with other people behind his back to get anything he wanted and when Jonah realized that, their relationships quickly deteriorated as Bobby became abusive and manipulative over Jonah.

Douglas: he pities the boy a lot because he can see that his relationship with his dad isn't great and damn, the kid reminds him so much of a younger version of himself. So, of course, he wants to help but he doesn't really know how, so he has resorted to taking him under his wing, although he isn't a big fan of the whole worshipping thing that's going on.

- Random Headcanons -

He has dog named Bo that he adopted as a puppy after he found him outside of the station one day. Someone had left him in a cardboard box so he took him in for what was supposed to be one night, but when Bo climbed up in bed with him during the night, he just fell in love with that little ball of fur.

He's a guitarist. He learned to play the guitar as a teen because Rook knew how to play. He's a natural and he learned really fast. He actually played in a band in Wayhaven as a teen, but got kicked out when they learned that he was polyam. He owns a Fender EOB Sustainer Stratocaster and an acoustic guitar, which were Rook's.

He's a songwriter. He started writing not long after learning how to play because he didn't know how else to express his feelings.

He has a huge record collection that started when he kept Rook's record. When she learned that he started collecting records, Rebecca started gifting him some on his birthdays and for Christmas and that's the only thing that made him not hate her completely as a teen.

He's fluent in French, he has been learning it since he was a kid because he once saw a clip of Rook speaking it and he became obsessed with him, but he also had a nanny who spoke French, so he grew up learning that language.

He hates the rain and he's scared of storms. As a kid he grew up with no one to reassure him when there was a storm or simply heavy rain and it traumatized him. He's a heavy sleeper but storms and rain are the only thing that will wake up in the middle of the night.

He picked up boxing after being kicked out of the band. He needed something to let his anger out and not snap at every person staring at him. So everytime something in his life goes wrong you’ll find him at the gym where he’ll train for hours until his knuckles bleed. He’s an extremely good boxer but he’ll obsess over a lost fight so training with Adam is a pain in the ass.

His favorite dish is lasagna. He just loves that it’s a fairly easy dish to make and that he can change the recipe all he wants depending on his mood. Tina can attest that he makes the best lasagna of Wayhaven but he also made the worst ones.
