The Harrington Pattern Part 1
Hey, guys! Sorry I'm late uploading today, but I went to bed early last night and forgot to schedule this.
Oops!
But! Welcome to what I've been calling Steve is a History Nerd agenda. We see in season two on Steve's essay for colleges that he can link his grandfather's military service with his prowess on the basketball court.
It is also surprisingly well written. *shakes fist at the Duffers stop telling us he's stupid and then showing the opposite, please! Let him be smart, too!*
Summary: The Renaissance Fair is finally back in Hawkins after three year absence (Starcourt was built on the fair site and after the fire it was bulldozed back to it's original field). Everyone is excited, even Steve to everyone's amazement. But Steve is hiding other hidden depths as he offers to help the kids make their costumes for the Fair.
Lucas is struggling with being both a nerd and a jock and fears the judgment of his friends. Steve sets out to help him overcome those doubts to be himself.
Tagging the untaggable: @mira-jadeamethyst @rozzieroos @itsall-taken @redfreckledwolf @emly03
***
Nobody expects Steve to be excited for the Renaissance fair. Dustin, Will and Lucas spend hours plotting bribes, schemes and out and out manipulations to get Steve to agree to take them. Even Robin expected him to side with her about the dust and the filth. Eddie expected him to be dismissive of the fantasy aspect of it.
Boy were they all wrong.
For it was Steve to bring up to the group after a rather successful D&D session.
In his hand was a bright pink flier and a wide grin on his face.
“Guys! The Ren Fair is back this year,” he said in lieu of a greeting. “I’ll finally be able to show off that tunic I’ve been working on.”
All heads turned to Steve in shock.
There was a cacophony of questions.
“Since when did you know how to sew?”
“What do you mean back? I didn’t even know Hawkins had one to begin with!”
“You want to go to the Ren Fair?”
“Why would you want to spend all day in the heat and dirt?”
Steve looked around at all off his friends in shock.
“Guys, I love the Ren Fair,” he muttered. “Didn’t you guys know?”
All their jaws dropped.
And Eddie? Eddie felt an icicle to the heart at the sight of Steve’s hurt expression.
“You’ll pardon the peasants, my liege,” Eddie said, bowing grandly. “I’m afraid we have all be harboring under the delusion that Ren Fairs were beneath your notice.”
Steve blinked at him a moment. “But I love that stuff. It’s the history and sword fights and jousting. It’s the like medieval Olympics. It’s the romance and chivalry of knights fighting for a fair maiden’s hand. It’s getting to dress up in fancy clothes and rip into turkey legs like a savage. What’s not to like?”
Dustin frowned. “Who here knew Steve liked history?”
Robin and Nancy raised their hands. They looked around waiting for me people to join them. But they stayed down.
Steve ducked his head and scuffed the floor with the edge of his sneaker.
“The ex-girlfriend I’ll buy,” Dustin continued. “But Robin didn’t become friends with Steve until after he graduated so how did she know?”
Robin blinked at them owlishly. “You mean you guys don’t know?”
Everyone looked around each other and then shook their heads.
“Steve was in my AP history class my junior year,” she said as if this was know fact.
“You do know that AP stands for advance placement, right?” Mike asked.
Eddie smacked the back of his head. “She was in it, dude. Don’t be an ass.”
Steve looked up at him and smiled a little.
Good, Eddie thought. Nothing like a little Mike violence to cheer up Steve.
“He wrote an essay for early placement college exams,” Nancy said. “He didn’t get a chance to turn it in because of our second go round with the Upside Down, but it was really good. It needed a little neatening up with the actual writing, but the history was solid.”
Steve blushed. “Thanks.”
Dustin looked skeptical. “What’s your favorite part of history?”
Steve opened his mouth and then closed it again. “I liked hearing about my grandpa’s time in the US army during WWII, but that was more because he made it interesting. But I really like the Industrial Revolution. Or rather the first Industrial Revolution. There have been four. The first one was from 1760-1840 and featured heavily in the textile movement.”
The room was silent.
“Why textiles, Stevie?” Eddie asked as the silence grew awkward.
Steve lit up like a child at Christmas morning and he began talking about the British textile movement.
“What the hell?” Dustin huffed, breaking into Steve monologue.
Steve ducked his head again and blushed. “Just because I’m not interested in science and fantasy doesn’t mean I’m stupid.” He straightened up. “And yeah, sometimes I get things wrong. But everyone does at some point. In fact I get a hell of a lot more flack for my intelligence than Eddie does and he repeated his senior year twice!” He took a deep breath and then ran his fingers through his hair.
“No offense,” he said waving to Eddie.
Eddie looked up at him with earnest eyes. “None taken. I concur.”
They all looked around at each other in shock. Like they hadn’t realized that they had done that.
After a few moments, Steve put his hands on his hips and pointed at all of them.
“So do you guys want to go or what?”
Eddie sat back with a smile as everyone roared their approval.
*
“No corsets,” was Robin’s only firm and fast rule for Steve when it came to dressing her up for the Ren Fair.
Steve looked her up and down. “Why on earth would I want you in a corset? Have you looked in the mirror?”
“Uh...” Robin said. “Is that a trick question? Of course I have. I don’t what that has to do with saying no to corsets though...”
Steve rolled his eyes. “In order to give you the curve you need to match the proper silhouette you would need to be cinched to hell. And as this is supposed to be fun.”
He grabbed her hand and started hauling her toward his car.
“Where are we going?”
“Thrifting!” he said with glee.
It took three different stores and a stop at the mall to get everything he needed.
“Give me three days,” he told her when he dropped her off at her house. “And I think you’ll like what I come up with.”
Robin eyed him warily. “If you say so.”
Steve laughed.
He crashed the next D&D session, showing up early to pick them up.
“What is everyone wearing to the Ren Fair?” he asked with a note pad on his lap and wagged the pen in his fingers.
“You want us to dress up?” Mike asked, eyes wide.
“Why not?” he asked with a shrug. “I’ve made my costume and currently reworking some thirfted threads for Robin’s outfit.”
Eddie blinked. “You made your costume?”
Steve shrugged again. “Yeah. I like sewing.”
There was suddenly an uproar and he held up a hand. “I can’t make you a full outfit before the Fair, but I can make over already made clothes to make them more historical. And maybe for next year I’ll have the time to make something special for everyone.”
Dustin eyed him suspiciously. “Like what?”
“Like tailoring pants to a tighter fit,” Steve explained “adding a sash or belt, turning old coats into vests and cloaks, things like that.”
They still weren’t sure how that would work out.
“Now I talked to Joyce and Claudia,” he continued. “And they’re both willing to help out in making sure everyone has something nice to wear. That includes Max and El.”
“Are the fair maidens joining us?” Eddie asked.
Steve nodded. “Yeah. Joyce is doing El and Will, Claudia is doing Dustin and Mike, and I’m doing Lucas and Max. Eddie said he already had a costume, so I didn’t have to worry about him.”
Eddie grinned. “You better believe it, pretty boy.”
Steve ducked his head and blushed. “So we’re all going thrifting with a $5 limit for each of you. But I wanted to brainstorm some ideas of what you wanted to go as so we don’t waste time wandering around.”
Everyone started shouting at once and it took Steve a good ten minutes before he got everyone calmed down enough to get what they wanted. Dustin wanted to go as a hobbit, but Steve had to nix that one.
“You don’t want to go running around the grounds barefoot,” he explained with a wince. “It’s not safe.”
“I’m going to have to agree with Stevie on this one,” Eddie said. “You guys have never been but there is all sorts of stuff laying around. It’s not indoors and the pathways are dirt lined. Think the state fair. It’s more like that then going to comic book convention.”
Dustin grumbled but conceded the point. Steve got them to decide on... well not quite peasant gear, but more rough around the edges than what Steve would be wearing.
Well, all but Lucas. He didn’t want to wear what they were wearing but he refused to say what he did want to wear.
So Steve dropped him off at home last.
They pulled into his driveway and Steve turned to him. “Do you not want to dress up? Because I won’t make you.”
Lucas picked at the loose string on his sweater. “It’s not that. I just remember the last time we did a group costume and they all thought I should be Winston because I was black like he was.”
Steve frowned for a moment. “The Ghostbusters, right?”
Lucas nodded. “I knew if I brought it up they’d shoot me down again.”
“So what did you want to go as?” he asked.
Lucas huffed out a sigh. “It doesn’t matter. It’s a stupid pipe dream anyway. Especially since you have to make Max’s dress and Robin’s costume, too.”
He opened the door to get out, but Steve reached over and slammed it closed.
“One, Robin’s costume is almost done,” he said counting out on his fingers. “Two, do you really think your girlfriend is going to want to wear a dress? And three, let me be the judge on what’s too much for me, okay?”
Lucas huffed a laugh at his second point. “Yeah, that was dumb of me.”
“So what is it?”
Lucas looked down again and heaved out a sigh. “An elf.”
Steve’s mind was whirling with the possibilities. “What colors?”
“What?” Lucas asked, not sure he heard Steve right.
“What colors would you want it to be?”
He pulled out the notebook and scrambled for a pen. Lucas pulled a pencil out of his bag and handed it to him.
“Uh I was thinking of a light blue and with a silver trim?” he said hesitantly.
Steve sketched something out. “Like this?”
Lucas leaned over to look at the drawing. “A little shorter so I’m not tripping over it and maybe those puffy pants?”
Steve adjusted the drawing and Lucas nodded.
“Yeah, like that.”
“All right,” Steve said. “I know exactly what to do and how to do it. It won’t be perfect because I don’t have time to do it right so I’ll be doing a lot of cheating. But yeah, it’s doable.”
Lucas gave him a hug. “Thanks, man.”
*
Steve called the one person he knew he could help him.
“Eddie,” he said the second the other man picked up. “I need your nerd connections to do a huge favor for Lucas.”
“Wha’cha got, big boy?” Eddie asked with a grin.
“You wouldn’t happen to know any Trekkies would you?” Steve asked chewing on his bottom lip.
“That depends, Stevie,” Eddie replied, “what’s the need?”
“Pointed ears.”
Eddie hummed. “I’m assuming you’re thinking Trekkie because of Spock and that’s a good thought. But I’m guessing since we’re going to the Ren Fair our stalwart ranger is wanting to be an elf?”
“Yeah,” Steve said. “Do you know anyone who can help?”
“Better than that,” Eddie said. “I know where to get the ears in the right... shade?”
Steve perked up. “Oh? I’m guessing Jeff?”
“Right in one, darlin’,” Eddie said with a soft smile. “I’ll give him a call and then call you back.”
“Thanks, Eds,” Steve breathed. “You’re the best.”
“Thanks, doll.”

I am so excited for this, guys. You have no idea. I'm little history nerd myself and this really fun to play around with.
Just a heads up. We WILL be addressing Mike's casual racism from the Ghostbusters scene because I don't like that it's never been addressed.

Ion know it’s something about yall not speaking about systemic racism on this app as well as wtf is going on in Palestine (and In other countries for that matter) —
It’s not because yall wanna keep the “peace” on your profile. It’s not because yall wanna “keep politics off yalls page.”
No. I know what it is.
Yall racist 🤣
If it has nothing to do with the white/japanese men yall write and read about, yall don’t wanna talk about it or hear about it and that’s hella lame.
Yall telling me tumblr/fanficition dick is more important than what’s going on with Palestine, Sudan, Congo … more important than your black mutuals simply being dragged for trying to create something that makes them happy and/or shows representation?
Yall can’t speak up?
That’s so wack.
You know who dfk you are and ion gotta say no names.
And if you’re black and you’re also pulling this card you oughta be ashamed of yourself and fucking embarrassed.

Addressing racism, bigotry, and rape apology under the cut:
I’ve always been a blog that addresses difficult and uncomfortable topics. It would be incredibly hypocritical of me to ignore this, and so I won’t.
I do not and will not support the careers of bigots, rape apologists, and those who willingly surround themselves with them.
As fans, we do not (and should not) get a say in who celebrities date. Sometimes we like a pairing, and sometimes we don’t. Maybe we vent about it to a friend, but the truth is that we don’t know these people and they don’t know us.
But I do know myself, and I am a person who has always stood against any kind of bigotry. I refuse to allow the haze of a public persona to cloud my judgment.
It’s a symptom of a much bigger problem. We as humans make excuses for people we like, people we admire, as a way to protect ourselves. The reality is that someone many of us liked and admired now proudly aligns himself with a Neo-Nazi supporter and rape apologist.
Joseph Quinn has spoken loud and clear that he is more than okay dating someone who has recently supported a Neo-Nazi (then excused it by saying she’s “not political,” as if one can be neutral about Nazism) and has taunted SA victims. You are the company you keep, and him being with her (in any capacity, even if it was platonic) shows that he tolerates that kind of behavior.
My writing has been a love letter to the fandom. It is not a love letter to Joseph Quinn. My goal is for y’all to feel safe and loved here, not for people to be comfortable excusing vile beliefs.
I will continue to write about Eddie. He is a comfort character to so many of us and his legacy extends well beyond the man who played him.
Going forward, I will not be supporting any future projects of Joseph’s. I will never support those who excuse bigotry. There is only so much you can separate art and the artist when the behavior is happening in real time.
I will not be speculating about the relationship on this blog. This is me stating that I never have and never will condone bigotry, and I’m not going to start now simply because of someone I admired.
Please take care of yourselves. I’ll be here, writing about the metalhead outcast that we love.
Yours till the coffee contemplates,
Bug 💚

Leaving this blog.
With my mini-series finishing up soon, I've decided to leave this blog as well as my AO3 account once it’s finished. This is not a decision I've made lightly, but circumstances have left this a place where I no longer feel safe.
As of now, I won't be deactivating this blog and will be leaving my fics up for anyone who'd still like to read them. I can't say this decision won't change later, but right now I feel that I've put too much work into this blog to simple delete it.
Below the cut is an explanation of why I'm making this decision, and what has been happening on this blog since the end of last year. It's not required to read or anything to understand the gist of this post; it's simply for my own peace of mind knowing that I spoke up about it. There will be topics that are possibly triggering such as harassment, threats, and racism so please mind the warnings and tags.
The mini-series is queued to finish next week, but there will be no more fic polls or wip wednesdays. I'll still be on here to make sure the queue does its job, and maybe post some stuff from my old drafts as a last bit of fun.
I'll have dms tentatively open for the next two-ish weeks for those who'd like to follow my new account, however I will not be answering anything from empty blogs. After that, asks and dms will be turned off, and I won't be coming back to this blog very often, if at all.
I cannot say thank you enough to the wonderful readers I've had and the amazing people I've met. I don't think I would've ever continued writing without your support and friendship. There's nothing I can do to show my appreciation for all of you.
Maybe we'll see each other again. If not, I hope your inspiration is always flowing, and 2024 treats you kindly.
Mothie 💜
Again, TW: rape/death threats, violent racism, repeated harassment, and mental health.
Back in November, I started getting rude, mean-spirited anons. It wasn't anything I was too bothered with because it didn't happen often and, honestly, my inbox gets flooded for a week or so anytime I post about certain topics. I blocked, deleted, reported and moved on thinking whoever it was would get bored and leave.
However, what started as a few rude anons calling me a bitch or stupid turned into a lot of anons being vile and racist which only worsened over the next few months.
I spoke about it in this post (link) near the end of November. In that post, I mentioned that those were the nicer asks and that was not an exaggeration. I have gotten my fair share of shitty anons as seen here (link) when I had to take a break from my blog because of said anons, but I have never gotten the amount of vitriol that I saw in these asks.
When I turned anon off, I started getting even worse messages from empty blogs that would either be blocked or deactivate within a week. When I turned my askbox off, I started getting hateful DMs. When I turned DMs off, it jumped from Tumblr to my other social medias which I had to private, completely avoid, or outright delete.
I got messages attacking my writing, calling me slurs, threatening to find me and rape or kill me, sending me explicit porn and rape videos while insulting my sexuality, and going into gross detail about how much people I interacted with hated me or how I would never be as good as them. I tried to power through it, pretending everything was fine while I pulled away from this blog, from writing, from friends that I loved and talked to every day. Everything about this blog, the fandoms I enjoyed, the people I talked to, made me so anxious because of these constant messages.
I took several breaks while dealing with this in therapy, repeatedly trying to come back and get comfortable on this blog, but within a few days of coming back the messages would start up again, either here or on any of my social medias I tried to unprivate, and I couldn't deal with it.
Only in the last week or two has it started to slow down and stop on a few of my other socials, which is the only reason I even feel comfortable making this post. However, in regards to this blog and my feelings toward it, the damage is done.
I don't think I can ever truly convey how isolating this has been. So many of these messages were about how I've spoken about my struggles as a black woman in fandom, how much of a burden it puts on the people who interact with me, how inferior I am to them and that I am everything that's wrong with fandom.
I felt scared and anxious to talk to anyone about this, especially people mentioned in those messages, out of fear that this harassment would jump to them. There are friendships that I stepped away from that I will never get back because of that. There are friends that I've felt like I was betraying by never telling them about what was happening because I felt too ashamed about letting this get to me.
I constantly worried that making a post like this would feel like, "Oh, Mothie's whining and trauma-dumping into the void about fandom racism again", that those messages would be right and it would force people to feel like they had to support me. Or worse, that people would agree and it would only make things worse. I've wrestled with so much guilt trying to decide to make this post and figure out what to do to make me trust myself again.
Ultimately, I don't think I was wrong for talking about my issues in fandom, and I don't think anything I've said has warranted this kind of harassment. I don’t know the who’s or why’s behind of this, but I've come to terms with the fact that I'll never really know. Truthfully, I'm not sure it even matters at this point. In the end, I think moving on from this blog entirely would be the best thing for me right now.
But, man, does it fucking suck.
This was the blog where I felt comfortable enough to start writing again, to start posting my fics. It's the blog where I met so many friends, got the courage to join new communities, found new hobbies, new music, new things to enjoy in life. It feels silly to say about a blog, but this was a place where I felt like I was able to carve out a space for myself. I put so much work into making it my own, and now the only thing I feel about it is anxious.
Hate messages and threats and racism have always been a part of fandom, and the internet as a whole. I’ve known since I started participating in fandom spaces that it was going to and continue to happen. I've known that I had to have a tough skin, especially if I ever spoke up about problems I faced because no one was going to have my back if I didn't have my own. I thought I had learned how to deal with it, and how to make a safe space for myself. But this goes beyond that. I did not deserve this. No one deserves this.
In some ways, it feels like admitting defeat, like I'm weak or hypocritical for not being as strong as I pretended I was and leaving. In other ways, it feels freeing to start over, and I'm choosing to view look at this optimistically even if it bittersweet. I don't want to let this scare me away from writing or from speaking about things that are important to me. All I can do now is say I'm so incredibly sorry to those I've hurt by stepping away or keeping this secret, and make sure I'm able to at least leave this blog on as happy a note as I can have.

TW: INCEST, GROOMING, RACISM
.
.
.
.
Hey friends. Ya'll that know me know that I don't ever post about drama or things going on in the simblr community but I thought this one was worth talking about. I'm not going to tag the account but the simblr is @/gittessimsadventuresog.
Gitte has talked numerous times about intentional incest, grooming and racism in their games in a discord server I'm in, and when confronted about it tried to play the "i was young/a teen at the time card" after blatantly being proud of the fact before being called out. We thought she was joking at first (because who wouldn't?) but very quickly realized she was 100% serious in the way she plays her game. Which, everyone plays in a different way but like...ew?
After being rightfully kicked from the server because of it proceeded to go into other servers trying to play the victim without giving all the details as to why they were blocked and kicked.
I've noticed that several of ya'll associate with Gitte, and this is in no way trying to dictate or tell anyone who they should be friends with, but I thought it right to throw the information out there so you guys can be informed and make your own decisions.
These are just a handful of screenshots but there are quite a few more if this isn't enough.

I hate it when some anti's preech about "listen to poc voices" yet get mad and call the same poc's racial slurs when they do something they deem as "irredeemable". Heck even Xenophobic too when ppl are callingout artists, almost 50% they'll say stuff like "Oh ofc its a _____ "
I don't strictly think that racism is solely an anti pitfall or mindset. I know plenty of people who identify as proship who have the same "listen to X!" battle march until X are no longer in harmony with their thoughts and opinions.
Racism, in my opinion, should never be classed as something that is simply 'fandom.' Racism is down to the individuals. And those individuals are everywhere. Antis just happen to correlate their racism with their other personal beliefs and values.
That said, you can always report racism you see on online platforms. While it may never truly silence those people, its certainly a pleasantly annoying inconvenience to them to experience chat bans or having their accounts removed. Even however temporarily; its one less racist voice in the sandbox.

A Love Connection Part 7
Just one more chapter after this one, can you believe it? Thank you all for coming with me on this wild journey about a crack idea I had at work.
In this we have Steve talking with Tommy, Billy's date and the first half of Eddie's.
Heads up for Billy being his racist self.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6
~
Billy and Eddie were whisked away so Steve would still be surprised, but Tommy was there for him to talk to. It wasn’t something they always showed on the show, but it provided closure for both the Suitor and the Catch.
Steve smiled when he saw the freckled red-head sitting in his seat, the two seats on either side, empty. He had his hands clasped between his knees and he smiled ruefully.
“Hey, Steve,” Tommy said with a sad smile. “You didn’t pick me because I didn’t come off as genuine, huh?”
Steve grabbed the other chair, the one he supposed Billy sat in, and set it down next to the Suitor. “Yeah. You got higher scores when it sounded like it was something you really liked.”
“I do like Paris, though,” Tommy admitted. “It was the first place I felt free to be myself. That’s why I like taking dates there.”
“But maybe not on the first date, huh?” Steve said with a wink. “I’m not sure how they would have pulled that off if you had won the date.”
Tommy grimaced. “Probably taken us to Vegas and the little Eiffel Tower.”
“Ooh,” Steve winced. “Yeah, that would have been bad.”
Tommy snorted and looked away.
Steve reached out and took his hand. “It’s not to late. To be a firefighter, I mean. There are lots of places that take and train volunteers. You wouldn’t have to quit what you do now, but I think you’d be happier if you could at least be a firefighter part time.”
“I think I’d be happier too,” Tommy admitted. “Thanks for calling me out on my bullshit. I needed that.”
“Take care of yourself, Tommy,” Steve said softly.
Tommy leaned over and pressed a kiss on Steve’s cheek. “You too, Steve. Just be careful with Billy, huh? He’s a little too rough around the edges, if you know what I mean.”
“I will.”
~
Steve was sitting with the film crew waiting for Billy to arrive. Steve was dressed in a jewel-toned blue suit with a black button up. His accessories from his belt, to his shoes, to his pocket square was also black. He fiddled nervously with the obsidian cufflinks they let him borrow. From what Bob had hinted all the way through the question half of the game show Billy was a smoke show.
Then he walked through the hotel’s front doors and everyone’s eyes turned his direction. He was what you would expect of a surfer. Sun-bleached blond hair, blue eyes, and tan. His white teeth gleamed at Steve when he smiled.
He was wearing a light grey suit with white button and slip on Vans. He was every person who was attracted to men’s wet dream and he walked as if he knew it, too.
Steve would have rolled his eyes, but he couldn’t deny what thrill Billy sent down his spine. This man was a panther. All sleek lines and danger in his hooded eyes.
Fuck.
Steve rose to meet him and Billy ran his tongue slowly over his teeth.
“Damn, babydoll,” he purred. “You’re even better in person than your picture. Either that or you clean up really well.”
Steve laughed, trying hard not be disarmed by his charming personality, but it was hard. Billy oozed confidence. He may have said werewolf, but this man could out seduce the sexiest of vampires.
He smoothed the front of his suit jacket. “Probably a little bit of both.”
Billy wagged his eyebrows suggestively. “I hope you’re hungry.” He offered his arm to Steve how took it. “The show got us a table at my favorite restaurant, it’s a steakhouse called xx. They have the best surf and turf in the city.”
“Yeah?” Steve said. “What’s your favorite thing to get there?”
Billy talked about all his favorite dishes all the way to the car. There right out in front was a cherry red 1969 Chevy Camero, glimmering like brand new.
“Wow, Billy,” Steve said in awe. “She gorgeous.”
Bill beamed as he opened Steve’s door for him. “I rebuilt her myself. Surfing isn’t a year round sport, so in my down time I rebuild antique cars.”
Steve slid into the seat and Billy closed it behind him. On the dash there were a couple of cameras so the show could get video of them talking on the way to the restaurant.
“I know you said you were a gearhead,” Steve said brightly. “But that’s incredible. What other cars do you have in your collection?”
Billy really lit up when given the chance to talk about cars. He talked about cars all the way to the restaurant. Which would have been fine if Steve had been able to get in a word edgewise. He liked cars, too and tried to say as much but Billy would talk over top of him, interrupt, or even straight up ignored what Steve said.
Billy was a gentleman, opening doors, and pulling out chairs, but when it came to actually listening? Nope.
Steve got a New York style steak with garlic russet potatoes, and beer battered asparagus. Billy got lobster that he picked out himself from the tank of still swimming lobsters. Steve objectively knew that a lot of restaurants did that to preserve freshness, but it did bother him a little, that you could look a creature dead in the eye and tell it you wanted to eat it.
He also knew it was hypocritical of him to eat steak and other meat, but he didn’t look it in the eye the first.
Dinner went fine, but mainly because Billy was forced to eat on occasion, so Steve could actually talk.
He talked about his kids at school but he could tell Billy wasn’t interested in that, so he talked about playing and coaching basketball. That got Billy’s attention.
He had played basketball in high school too.
“I was made captain my senior year,” Billy bragged. “Got us all the way to the championship but we lost to a bunch of...” he looked at the camera a moment and then considered his wording a little better, “coloreds.”
“I don’t think they like people to use that term anymore,” Steve said with a frown.
Billy threw back his head and laughed. “They why do they still use it in the NAACP then? And they use POC and WOC which the C stands for color. I mean there are worse things to call them. Plus it wasn’t like the team just had blacks on it.”
To change tact Steve talked about how he had been the captain of his high school team from his junior year and how in his junior year they got all the way to state and won, but because the school didn’t have the money to get them to regionals that year, they had to forfeit.
“That sucks,” Billy huffed stabbing at his lobster. “You guys couldn’t do like a bake sale or some shit. I bet you could have pulled in a lot of money if you had done a car wash.”
Steve plastered on his best doting parent where the kid is actual nightmare smile. “Oh sure, the principal just didn’t give a shit. It wasn’t debate or drama so he didn’t care. I know it’s usually the other way round, but he had come from one of those progressive schools. He even took away our chairs and made us sit on big rubber balls or bean bag chairs. It was a mess.”
After dinner Billy took him for a walk on the pier. There was an awning set up with fairy lights and citron candles for Billy to ask Steve his questions. They sat on Adirondack chairs and drank fruity cocktails.
“Have you ever gone skinny dipping?” was Billy’s first question.
Steve’s eyes flicked toward to the cameras, but he didn’t seem to be suggesting that they do it then. “A couple of times. My parents growing up had a pool in the backyard and I’ll admit to a little naked action in it from time to time.”
Billy wagged his eyebrows. “Do you ever put out on a first date?”
“Only if the date is doing really, really well.” Steve suppressed a sigh. Of course all the questions were going to be sexual.
“Duly noted,” Billy said slyly. “What is the freakiest sex position you’ve ever tried?”
Steve shifted in his chair a little uncomfortably. “I’m not really in to weird positions when it comes to sex, it’s what ever is comfortable for us both.”
Billy chuckled darkly. “Vanilla, huh. Quite a rarity in gay men.”
Only for you, Steve thought frantically. Sheesh. He had thought that Billy’s forwardness was a turn on the past couple of days in the studio, but now out here with the sun setting, and it getting dark? Suddenly Steve’s heart rate was beginning to pick up and not in a good way.
“Have you ever been in multiple sex partner situation and if so what?” Billy asked, after taking a drink from his glass.
Steve’s eyes flicked back to the cameras again. He had, but this was going to be shown to parents of his kids and he really didn’t want to get fired from his job. The skinny dipping as kids was one thing. Everyone did stupid shit as a kid. But admitting to a threesome? Not so much.
“If you make it to a second date,” Steve said with a wink, “I’ll tell you then.” He hoped that was enough of a hint for Billy but vague enough for everyone else.
“Saucy!” Billy purred. “I like it. Final question. Did this date go well enough for me to take you back to my hotel for me to fuck you into the mattress?”
Steve laughed. “As hot as you are, I think I’m going to wait to see how Eddie’s date goes. But if we make it date two, you’re on.”
Billy pressed a kiss to Steve’s lips. Searing and exhilarating. Steve was tempted into giving in. He wasn’t likely to see Billy again after show. But no.
What kind of message would he be sending his kids if he did that. He gently pulled away.
“Wow,” he murmured. “Bet you make all the boys go crazy.”
Billy chuckled. “You have no idea.”
Then Billy drove him back to his hotel.
As they were removing his battery pack and mic, the tech asked, “He’s so not getting that second date, right?”
Steve laughed. “Not a chance in hell.”
~
Steve arrived back in Hawkins and it felt strange. Like he was only visiting the town he grew up in. Like he was a different person. It was probably all the cameras and the fact that they wouldn’t really be talking to anyone he knew.
He was dressed in blue jeans and a red sweater. He had a blue button up shirt underneath it and the sleeves pushed up. He was really hoping he got to keep the clothes because he loved this sweater.
He got off the plane and was greeted by Eddie holding up a sign that had his name written in sparkly paint.
If Billy had been a smoke show, Eddie Munson was a wild fire. He had deep brown eyes, curly brown hair that reached his collar bones. He was dressed in ripped, black jeans and a leather jacket.
Then he smiled and Steve was smitten. His dimples had dimples.
“Hey, Eddie,” he breathed once he was he was close enough.
“Hi-ya, Steve!” Eddie said brightly. “Normally I do breakfast in bed, to start the day off, but as that’s off the table, I found a great place that makes killer waffles that isn’t the diner we’re going to for dinner.”
Steve cocked his head to side. “Yeah, so are we doing Benny’s for breakfast or dinner?”
Eddie burst out laughing, his infectious grin making his eyes sparkle. “I guess I walked into that one. Benny’s is for dinner. I heard he has the best chili burger in the world.”
Steve took his hand. “Well, then lead on, MacDuff!”
Eddie looked down at their joint hands with a wondrous expression. He looked back up at Steve and then dragged him off to his car. It was a nice, black Pontiac Sunfire two-seater.
“That is a very nice car,” Steve purred.
Eddie laid over the hood like he was cuddling the car. “She’s my baby. Which is not to be confused with my sweetheart, which is my guitar. But she’ll be making an appearance later.”
“I didn’t realize music producing was so lucrative,” Steve said honestly, going to open his door. Eddie jumped up and swatted his hand away.
“None of that,” he huffed. “I am a gentleman.” He opened the door for Steve and he slid in. Then Eddie ran around to the other side of the car.
As he started the engine he replied, “This is from my being a frontman for a heavy metal band. I still big fat royalty checks for that. But also producing can depend on who you’re producing. In this case bands like Metallica and Five Finger Death Punch are very lucrative indeed. Just because I didn’t join the whole throw money at you to prove my worth doesn’t mean I don’t have it.”
“I guess now I wondering what I did get three rich guys as my Suitors,” Steve admitted shyly.
Eddie glanced over at him before turning back to the traffic in front of them. “Does the money make you uncomfortable?”
Steve shook his head. “I grew up with money, but my parents threw me out when I told them I was gay and I’ve had to learn to live without it. I have an apartment I share with my best friend, I teach history and coach middle school children. There is nothing in the application or the questionnaire I filled out that would suggest I’m rich. So it just seems a little wild to me, I guess.”
Eddie nodded, fingers tapping on the steering wheel. “I guess I can see that. Maybe the only ones interested were rich dudes.”
“I’m not sure if that makes me feel better or worse,” Steve said with a huff of laughter. “But I’m here now. I knew you had money going into this date, I just wasn’t aware of how much. And it really doesn’t make a difference to me. You were sweet and genuine, two things the other two definitely weren’t.”
“Tommy said that you encouraged him to be a firefighter,” he said with a hum.
Steve whipped his head to stare at Eddie in shock. “I didn’t know you guys were sequestered like I was.”
Eddie put his elbow on the window sill and rubbed his temple with his finger. “All the Suitors stay at the same hotel. Billy and I took him out to drinks to commiserate him losing. He’s not a bad guy. A little hotheaded, though.”
Steve smiled and cocked his head to the side. “Yeah that tracks. I really hope he goes for it. He deserves to find a little bit of happiness for himself.”
“Yeah.”
They drove the rest of the way to the diner in comfortable silence. It was a sweet little 60’s themed diner called Big Ma’s that was tucked away behind the Hawk Theater.
The waitresses were dressed in period costumes that were light blue with stark white aprons and hats.
Steve looked around in wonder. “I don’t think I’ve ever been here before. I can’t wait to try something new with you.”
Eddie lit up. “You really haven’t been here before? I hear the waffles are amazing!”
They were seated and given menus. When they both ordered coffee the waitress brought over and left a pot for them to share.
“Real cream for the coffee?” Steve marveled as he poured some into his mug. “I think I’m going to have to cheat on Benny’s for breakfast from now on.”
The waitress must have heard because she burst out laughing.
After much debate Steve and Eddie both decided on a breakfast platter with a stack of waffles to share.
The waffles were big squares, topped with fruit and homemade whip cream and doused with real Vermont maple syrup.
They chatted throughout the whole meal until they got into a fork fight over the last bite of waffle. Steve won, but he was pretty sure that Eddie had let him.
They then took a tour of the town, Steve leading the way and showing Eddie everything he loved.

smol note re: the bachelorette rolls for Simply Lilac
More specifically, the name of one of them and why I'm now changing it. cw for racism, particularly towards African Americans.
It’s come to my attention that ‘spooky’ - while not a racist term in origin - has a history of being co opted as such in the US. So while I know that’s the official name from Sims 3, I’ll be calling it Goosebumps Day (and renaming it in the rolls) from now on.
English is my native language but I am not American, so I only recently learned this. It's an easy enough thing to find a synonym for, I figure. So yeah, welcome to Goosebumps Day?

Why is Harry Potter trending (or was)? Can it not? Like deadass I’m being fr can it plz not. Especially that J.K Rowling is a massive TERF, a raging antisemite, and disgustingly try to deny that trans people were not affected by the Holocaust (which she was ratio’d by George Takei).
“Proof?”
Way ahead of you: (Tw: transphobia, racism, antisemitism, holocaust, Harry Potter)
Oh and don’t get me started how Hogwart Legacy, you know that game that was sworn Jk Rowling wasn’t apart of (yeah sure-) is blood libel story. Not to mention that trans people have told you not to especially since there is a canonical transgender character named Sirona. (People said Sirona is a Celtic goddess for healing. but- come on. You can’t bullshit out of this one. There are OTHER NAMES TO NAME A TRANSGENDER CHARACTER— it make those joke with how Jk Rowling naming not far off. Because it like naming a nonbinary character “NoGendora” or smth (before you say, I’m nonbinary myself—) so idc if it already have a meaning, it still is tone deaf to name a transgender women Sirona).
“But but- you can separate the art from the artist?”
Yes. You can separate art from the artist. HOWEVER before you celebrate thinking you had a gotcha moment. You can only separate if the art itself isn’t problematic or is bigotry itself. Harry Potter is as mention in the links. Not to mention, Harry Potter himself become a cop despite the cop in that world didn’t do jack shit. And don’t get me started on how they handle the whole elf slavery. Also there is heavy fatphobia in this story, proof, look at how they would talk about Harry’s abusive aunt and uncle from his mother’s side. Don’t get me started how she would describe Rita Skeeter. There even a black character who’s last names is Shacklebolt— do I need to say more (if I’m missing any other examples please tell me)
Not to mention she benefits off of it and uses her money to donate to transphobia and just don’t give a flying fuck if she offend people (which seem to usually be the case for trans/homophobia but moving on). like, this is who you wanna support? You still want to read this wizard book when there are other that don’t have transphobia, racist, antisemitic, or any problematic rhetoric and are objectively better than Harry Potter? Really? You wanna die on this hill?
Look. I used to like Harry Potter. but that was before I knew what a dirtbag of a fucking human she is (I didn’t really have social media at the time), and I cringe as I wish I learn sooner that she was a deplorable person who hates trans people like myself (nonbinary respectfully). But, I can happily say Fuck Harry Potter that series can burn in a trash for all I care and I hope the hbo series flops on its ass. And also fuck Jk Rowling, she can fuck off for all I care. That being said, If you support Harry Potter/Jk Rowling, unfollow me. Block me. Because I do not support Harry Potter/Jk Rowling. Because Trans rights/Gender Equality, Human rights are infinitely more important than a basic ass wizard book/movie with a even basic ass magic system when there are objectively better wizard/magic books that are respectful.
Anyway, that being said, Trans and basic human rights matter 🩵🩷🤍🩷🩵 🤭

My MWIII Thoughts
I’ve finally taken the time to get all of my thoughts about the new campaign together and put them in a single post. There are no spoiler tags since the game is officially releasing today/tomorrow, but everything is under the cut with a warning. I have a lot of things to say here, so I’ve tried to organize it point by point. The points I think are most important are first, and I ask that you take the time to read through them. If you want to skip to the points about characters and that death, the beginning of those sections is marked with red, but be prepared to scroll.
I watched the custscenes, with gameplay, all the way through once and I’m not doing it again. I tried to go back to specific scenes to reference in this post, but even that was a lot for me, so if my timeline in here is a little screwy don't fault me too much.
If you just want my quick, overall thoughts: This campaign was two hours of egregiously incoherent, poorly written, shoddily thrown together military propaganda, even more than the cod games usually are, and your money would be much better spent donating to help Palestine - there are links to do so in this review, marked with green, as well as boycott information, and the same donations links are also provided on this shorter post if you want to go directly to them.
(There are spoilers below, and this is long. I'm not kidding. Do not click the readmore unless you are prepared to scroll.)
Military Propaganda/Islamophobia
I spoke about this some already here and here because I felt this was an important enough topic that deserved its own post.
Call of Duty has never been has never been the game where I expected to see proper representation of the Middle East or Middle Eastern politics. It is first and foremost military propaganda. More than that it is American military propaganda. Just like with every superhero and pro-military movie post-9/11, it should be expected that you’re not going to get any kind of meaningful insight or depth when it comes to Middle Eastern storylines and characters, but there is usually more of an effort to hide the Middle East = Terrorist subtext.
To say I was shocked at how overt and blatant the Islamophobia was in this game is an understatement. We get four deaths of named characters in this game. Two of whom are Middle Eastern women, Dena and Samara, from the country Urzikstan, the fictional combination of Syria and Afghanistan and home to terrorist group Al-Qatala (real subtle, right?). Both of these women are associated with the ULF, the Urzikstan Liberation Force, Farah’s group of freedom fighters whose goal is to free their country from foreign subjugation with Samara no longer being an active member. Both of these women are introduced in this game. Both of these women are minor characters. Both of these women, Samara in particular, are trying to live their lives peacefully now that their country has been freed.
Both of these women are given deaths more brutal and more shocking than the other two deaths of two main characters in the series.
We meet Dena at the beginning of the game when we’re first re-introduced to Alex and Farah. We see her have a heartfelt reunion with Farah, and the two have a conversation while driving where Dena expresses her concerns about wanting Urzikstan to remain peaceful but assures Farah that everyone will support her. After, Dena is suddenly shot in the chest, and Farah is forced to take control of the vehicle they’re in, which ultimately flips over and we get Farah’s first death fakeout.
It’s in this cutscene that we see a lingering shot on Dena as well as her corpse being thrashed in the car as Farah tries to take control and as it flips. We are given a Middle Eastern woman showing hope for her country that the peace she has fought for will be maintained only to then watch her die for shock value and a fakeout for another character, and watch her body fly across the car as it flips. We don’t get that with either of the other two gunshot deaths in this game. Soap’s is just as sudden, but we see it coming, and there are no shots of his body being thrown about, no closer views of his face like there are with Dena. Shepherd’s is entirely off-screen and all we’re left with is a shot of him lying face down on his desk - no blood or bullet wound in sight.
Notably, the only other person we see a comparable amount of blood on in this game is Makarov, the enemy of the series.
Samara, who gets the worst death in this game, in my opinion, is a retired ULF soldier we’re introduced to on a plane. I’ll start by saying I was under the assumption this may have been the reboot replacement for No Russian, the mission in which Makarov and Co. shot up Zakhaev International Airport to frame America for terrorism in the original series, and the mission that was teased after the credits in the MW2 reboot. We get the scene of Makarov and his men at the airport before boarding the plane, which could just be a nod to the original mission. However, until there is an official reboot of the No Russian mission, I’m going to assume this was Activision’s new take on it.
In this mission, we learn that Makarov plans to use this plane bombing to frame Urzikstan, Farah and the ULF specifically. The thing is, as Big Mak and friends are in the airport preparing to board, we are shown that the ULF is already being blamed for the missile attack on Arklov Military Base from the previous mission where their missiles were stolen, capped with Konni’s chemical gas, and one was detonated. There’s even a news sequence showing that the world already thinks of the ULF as a terrorist organization, and has not-so-quietly thought that for years. That makes this upcoming scene feel not only unnecessary but like a deliberate choice made by Activision to be extra cruel to a Middle Eastern character.
We see Samara text with her family and are shown a picture of her husband and children before the man next to her begins speaking to her in Arabic. He compliments her family and, I assume as we’re not directly shown, gets the No Russian text - a text, for those who have not played the original games, meaning to not speak Russian to not tie the terrorist act they’re about to commit back to the Russians. The Traveler, as he's called, then reveals that he knows who she is, knows her family, and knows that she is a former ULF soldier and fought the Russians. He then pulls a gun on her and Makarov and Konni take the plane hostage, purposely speaking Arabic and declaring this is for Urzikstan.
We are then forced to watch as Samara fights back, but is ultimately taken to Makarov where a bomb is strapped to her chest. He gives his usual cryptic speech, and over-explains to the audience what’s happening before diving out of the plane D.B. Cooper style.
Samara is then dragged to the back of the plane by a Hijacker, where the remaining passengers are, kicking and fighting and trying to reason with him to stop. He pauses and we then get this exchange:
Hijacker: Are you a terrorist?
Samara: No…
Hijacker: You look like one.
He then puts a gun in her hands, tosses the cellphone that will let her stop the bomb, and shoves her into a crowd where we have to watch her struggle to explain what’s happening to her and that she needs the phone to a crowd of people that are either afraid of or angry with her. She is shoved to the ground by a random man, forced to fight through people trying to tackle and beat her, and, when the phone is finally within reach in the hands of a scared passenger, the plane blows up.
I want to emphasize that most of this is a cutscene. There are a few button presses for the player to try and get the phone, and you are allowed to look around and try to fight back, but that is quickly stopped, and you are forced to sit and watch through Samara’s perspective. The end result? There’s an investigation for who may have done this, and you play as Farah collecting evidence from the crash site so Makarov can’t frame the ULF. The mission succeeds, because it’s a story mission and it has to, Makarov is unable to control the narrative so people can only suspect the ULF did it but can’t prove it, and Samara…died for nothing. All of that was so people could suspect the ULF was a terrorist organization, which the game has previously gone out of its way to establish was already happening before Makarov got on that flight. This entire sequence and the mission after added nothing to the storyline other than the brutal forcing of a Middle Eastern woman to hijack a plane 9/11 style and die a death worse than two of the series’s main characters.
Two side characters, two Middle Eastern women who have never existed before this game, are put in this game solely to die in ways where their deaths are more emphasized and graphic than a character we’ve played as since the series began, and one of the main villains.
There is a genocide happening in Palestine. Islamophobia in the United States, and the West as a whole, is rising to post-9/11 heights. There is already so much propaganda being spread in an attempt to dehumanize the men, women, and children who are being murdered by Israeli forces, to justify the actions - the war crimes - of the Israeli forces. Could this be a sloppy attempt at Activision trying to mirror real-life stereotypes and how quick the media is to jump to the Arab = Bad narrative? Possibly. I don’t think it is. I think this was a deliberate change from the original No Russian mission in which America is framed for terrorism, made by an American company that makes games meant to garner interest and support in the American military, during a time when the American government is being criticized for funding and aiding an ethnic cleansing.
As slapped together as this game was, I don’t believe they couldn’t have changed the campaign in the time since the situation in Palestine escalated to this level. I firmly believe it was a purposeful choice to write that scene, to film that scene, to keep that scene.
It is blatant, it is clear, it is as in-your-face as it can possibly be. It is not something this fandom gets to ignore because they don’t like the campaign. It is not something this fandom gets to overshadow with Soap’s death as poorly written as it was. It is not something this fandom gets to stay silent about while also posting about #freepalestine.
I have never expected the best when it comes to Islamophobia from the Call of Duty games or its fandom. I’ve never expected anything beyond mildly okay. Call of Duty is military propaganda, I know. The fandom is known for its racism and it’s not getting better, I know that especially. But I don’t see how anyone, in the times we’re living in right now, would be able to look at this and not acknowledge it for what it is.
It is the purposeful brutalization of Middle Eastern characters.
It is propaganda.
It is racism.
It is Islamophobia.
It is wrong.
Engaging Critically/Acknowledging Privilege
While I may be stepping back from the CoD fandom, I understand that not everyone is going to. For some people, these games are a comfort or an escape. I’m not here to call for a boycott of Call of Duty or Activision while there are more important boycotts to be focusing on - and you can find more info on them here & here.
What I am asking, particularly of those of us in the fandom that are not being directly affected by what’s happening in Palestine, is that there is more acknowledgment of the level of privilege that we have and that people learn to engage more critically with the media they consume.
It is a privilege to play a game like Call of Duty and not have to think about the propaganda. It is a privilege (and ignorant) to say “it’s not political”, “it’s just pixels”, or “it’s not real”. It is a privilege to be able to just turn the game off and never have to think about war, and the impact of the representation of the characters, and the real-life events that these games base themselves on. And this isn’t just a CoD issue, this is something that should be considered with every piece of media you engage with.
There is no such thing as a “politics-free” book/movie/game/show. Everything carries the biases - conscious or subconscious - of the person or people who created it. There is no such thing as media or fiction not having an effect on real life, especially in a fandom for what is essentially War Crimes: The Game.
I’m going to take a quote from this post by @yeyinde.
"It’s incredibly egregious to pretend that the media you consume isn’t based, in some part, on real life or has no repercussions outside of it just being fiction. And it’s especially dishonest to say this isn’t the case within the COD fandom when people have said that the erasure of Gaz from the fandom in favour of a white character is traumatising. The portrayal of the Middle East is traumatising. The portrayal of Makarov in fiction as an uwu-sympathetic babbie is traumatising. The portrayal of the military as heroes is traumatising. These are real people expressing real emotions and bringing up important matters that impact them long after they’ve logged out of tumblr. Just because they stop being relevant to you after that does not, and SHOULD NOT, matter. Their trauma, their feelings, and their interpretations shouldn’t be ignored in favour of some catch-all excuse to limit your responsibility as a consumer to think critically about the media you’re devouring just because it has no consequences for you."
Fiction mirrors real life whether you want to admit it or not. It shows real biases, and it affects real people. Participating in fiction and the surrounding culture does not magically absolve you of consequences. It does not suddenly mean you get a free pass at things like sexism, racism, ableism, colorism, romanticization of abuse and sexual assault, etc. just because your escapist fantasies are conveniently free of people who are different from you.
It may be your fiction, but it is someone else’s non-fiction, and you do not get to decide that it isn’t or that the impact doesn’t matter because it’s about fictional characters.
I'm going to link another post from @yeyinde with another quote here.
"It’s easy to get swept up into something when you have no tangible ties to the effects of what’s being portrayed, which can lead to making dismissive or hurtful statements out of pure ignorance. My biggest gripe was the excuses being laundered out and (either unintentionally or intentionally) giving the creators a pass for what they created and the harm they caused other people to experience. Just because they did not experience the same trauma, it does not diminish its impact on others. This is a very important distinction, which I think was being missed."
Does this mean you can’t ever write or read about traumatic things, or that you can’t enjoy the CoD games ever again? No.
But I need you all to understand that you can criticize the media you enjoy. You should criticize the media you enjoy. Criticism does not mean never letting yourself enjoy a piece of media again. Criticism does not mean trying to get a character or creator “cancelled”. Criticism does not automatically equal hate.
Criticism is an act of love, and it is necessary when deconstructing and confronting biases - both yours and other people's.
Resources To Support Palestine
The lovely @moondirti provided some organizations where you can donate to support the humanitarian aid in Gaza with the note:
It's important to acknowledge that, while limited aid is being allowed through, recent negotiations have allowed your charity to reach the people of Palestine.

Onto the actual game.
The 141
I don't know what happened during development between this game and MW2, but the relationship between the members of the 141 is severely lacking. We get the usual Soap and Ghost banter for one mission, because, let’s be real, that's what got a lot of people into the last game, but that's about it? There’s nothing new, nothing added to their relationships, and the game sticks to the same duos (Ghost/Soap & Price/Gaz) that we’ve had for the past two games. Even Soap and Ghost’s banter during the attack on Milena’s private island doesn’t have the same impact on the characters as their banter during the Alone mission in MW2. They get a few lines about Soap admiring Milena’s cars and Ghost taunting him about marrying an Oligarch, and…that’s it until the cutscene where they interrogate her.
There’s maybe a few quippy lines here and there, but overall the 141 gives off the same feeling as a group of semi-friendly co-workers that sometimes work on the same project rather than an actual team that has shed blood, sweat, and tears with each other.
This would’ve been such a great time to explore deeper into the team dynamics, show us pairings we don’t get to see as often and build on those relationships, make us really feel for these characters on a personal level. In the original series, you got a feel for every character and their team dynamics, and the player felt the impact of each death as they watched the other characters react (something I’ll talk about later). With this game, we get…what? Four men that desperately need a lozenge throwing a few sassy one-liners at each other and giving each other a harsh pat on the back like a bunch of dads at a barbecue?
I feel like so much of the heavy labor regarding the 141 in the reboot is done through fanfiction at this point because this game especially gives us barely anything to go on, and that’s such a missed opportunity on Activision’s part considering how so much of MW2’s popularity came from the relationship built between Soap and Ghost. It all just feels so hollow and surface-level; there’s no depth here, no attempt to build a connection from the player to this group as a team. In my opinion, Activision relies too heavily on the older fanbase’s connection to the original series, and the newer fanbase’s self-created characterizations, to fill in the blanks so they can leave these characters as empty and vanilla as possible in order to appeal to a broader audience.
And they’ve still somehow managed to fail at that. Speaking of failing...
Graves and Shepherd
Graves should’ve died in that fucking tank, and I will stand by that opinion even after I die. It was such a cop-out to have him live, and for him to suddenly come back with the excuse, “Well, I wasn’t in that tank, blah, blah, blah.”
This is supposed to be a game series where characters die and stay dead. The characters die. Some die heroically, some die horrifically, some die quickly, some die painfully slow, most die bloody, but they die. It’s a staple of the series, like Game of Thrones pre-season 5. I don’t know if Activision didn’t know what to do with his character, or if they realized he was semi-popular with the fans and decided to magically bring him back via deus ex remote-controlled tank, or if they were trying to “subvert expectations” and give us all a little surprise plot twist, but it sucked.
Also, no one checked the tank for a body? That seems to be something everyone has a problem doing in these games, and I don’t know what Activision thinks that does for the 141, but what it does do is make these elite military officials look incompetent as hell because their “dead” enemies keep coming back.
There was nothing different that Graves did in this game from what he did in the previous game. We get the same air support mission from him that we got last game, and really that’s it. Okay sure, he’s working with Farah now, that’s a little different, but what did he do in that mission? Give her vague instructions on where to find some GPS trackers and then give her more vague instructions on where to find the missile containers to slap the trackers on? He could’ve easily been replaced with one of Farah’s people who scouted ahead, or Alex, or a decorative cowboy hat, and the mission would have gone the exact same.
Other than that he spends the entire game hiding behind Shepherd like a scared child up until the end when he ultimately turns on Shepherd, and even that felt so blah. He faces no consequences for his (racist) actions in Las Almas other than Gaz refusing to shake his hand, he faces no consequences for betraying the 141, going so far as to lie that it even happened in front of Congress, and he gets off completely free as far as we know. There was no point to his character, no point to bringing him back, no point to him being in this game at all, and if I find the Activision employee who decided to keep him alive I will be throwing hands expeditiously.
Shepherd was…there, I guess? I’m sure he was meant to be a menacing, sly, back-stabbing character, but he came off as more irritating than anything. His rescue mission felt akin to being forced to babysit your annoying younger sibling who questions everything you do. They give you a cute little nod to the OG series with his cutscene with the 141 in the snow (because Activision has to rely on nostalgia and easter eggs since they know this game is emptier than the promises of an absentee father), but most of it is spent with Shepherd preaching about how great he is and threatening the 141 like he’s been doing the entire game. I’m sure he’s supposed to come off as clever, outsmarting the 141 and tricking them into rescuing him - this big, bad, battle-hardened General - but all of that is undercut by him getting captured to begin with.
The General Shepherd in the original series killed two of the player characters. How am I supposed to be intimidated by this nagging grandpa briskly jogging through the snow behind me in his ugly pajama jumpsuit? Even his ending is lackluster. He’s outwitted in front of Congress by Graves of all people, and then we get a cutscene where Price shoots him off-screen. That’s it. There was no satisfaction like in the original series, no triumph, no sense of vengeance, only a tired feeling of thank god I don’t have to deal with this anymore. This constant attempt at build-up in this reboot series of Shepherd being this looming figure over the 141 ends not with a bang, and not even with a whimper.
Makarov
I’m going to start this off by saying I mean absolutely no hate to Julian Kostov, Makarov’s actor, he definitely did his job.
Unfortunately, that job was playing a random Russian man that happened to have the same name as the Vladimir Makarov from the original series. He’s literally just a dude. There’s nothing particularly menacing about him, nothing that really screams Leader of an Ultranationalist group, nothing that would set him apart in a line-up of kind-of-gruff white men. I wasn’t expecting him to be some over-the-top supervillain, but he feels too normal, too regular, too everyday. Maybe that was the point Activision was trying to make - that having a villain with too-sharp features, eyebrows with in-your-face arches, and two-toned eyes is realistically too much - but it feels like they leaned too far in the opposite direction to compensate.
How am I supposed to take Makarov seriously when they gave him such big, brown, babygirl eyes? Though I realize this may be a character model issue because everyone in this game seemed to have huge doe eyes at one point or another (looking directly at you and those unblinking baby blues, Soap).
The first time we get a proper cutscene with Makarov, he shoots one of his own men – one who had questioned his plan in the rescue mission – and he gives some passionate Make Russia Great Again speech that involves a lot of big gestures, promises of showing the world “true power”, and him being weirdly touchy with one of his men. It’s not a bad scene, and I think Julian really shines here as Makarov. It’s a little in-your-face for me, but overall not a bad introduction to what is supposed to be the overarching big bad for the rest of the series. It gives you a good enough sense of danger, and just enough worry for the main crew as they get ready to go up against this guy.
Unfortunately, the rest of the game doesn’t really follow through on that. Makarov spends more time monologuing, asking his men “philosophical” questions about prisoners and guards, and cryptically foreshadowing at the 141 than he does doing…anything. We are told about all of the bad deeds he’s done. We are told how evil he is. We are told that Makarov needs to be stopped at all costs. The only problem is, we aren’t shown any of that. We see the aftermath of Verdansk, a distant explosion after Makarov has been captured, but we never see Makarov do any of that. When we do get to see Makarov, his men are doing all of the dirty work while he stands around and looks evil. It’s his men fighting and killing guards to get him out of prison, his men attacking Farah and her soldiers, his men launching missiles topped with biochemicals, his men forcing Samara to blow up a plane, his men guarding Milena and his finances. The most he does during any of these scenes is order his men around and give evil villain speeches to give the audience exposition about why he’s doing all this.
We probably see more of Makarov’s shirtless Tinder pic than we see him in action.
In the original series, we see Makarov being at the forefront of his movement, unafraid to get his hands dirty. He is part of the group that commits the massacre/terrorist attack on Zakhaev International Airport, he kills the two FSO agents protecting President Vorshevsky, he’s the one who shoots and kills Yuri, and that’s only part of what we see in-game. Sure, we’re told about his other crimes, but we’re shown enough to back up the claims that he is evil. In this game, he kills two people himself, one of them being his own soldier that I mentioned earlier, and the other being Soap (and we’ll get to that later). Two extremely lackluster deaths that are over before you get the chance to really digest them. Maybe he kills more people during the intro mission when you rescue him, but it’s during gameplay and easily missed when you’re too busy trying to fight your way out of this Arkham-esque prison. I think I could look past it if he wasn’t also present during some of the scenes where his men are carrying out his atrocities for him, but instead, Activision chose to have him in the background standing there…menacingly.
I don’t want to say Makarov was a bad villain; he was certainly better than Shepherd and Graves. I just think Activision made very strange choices with his character that resulted in him becoming this weird mishmash of an average monologuing movie villain and the micromanaging boss that stands over your shoulder, and it took a lot of the “oomph” out of his character for me.
Soap's Death
I hope whoever made this decision at Activision has to live the rest of their life constantly feeling like they have to sneeze and are never able to. What the fuck happened here? In what world did Soap’s death make any kind of sense here? This felt like they knew fans were expecting someone to die (and they already retconned the yeehaw war criminal) so they put a bunch of names in a hat and had some poor unpaid intern pick one out.
I have not been quiet about how much death I wanted in this game. I expected at least two deaths, with one of them preferably being Price. Going into this I was prepared to lose characters, and I was prepared to lose them to a heroic sacrifice, to an exhaustingly epic gunfight, to an explosion in a clocktower, to literally anything, but I was not prepared to lose a character to bad writing. And that’s what Soap’s death was. There is no build-up to it throughout the game other than a cryptic, “I’ll see you again, MacTavish.” from Makarov in a flashback scene. There’s no exploration of Soap’s character arc, his background, his family. There’s nothing.
Price and Soap try to defuse a bomb, Makarov shows up and his men overpower them, Makarov goes for the kill on Price, and instead shoots Soap when Soap tries to stop him. The entire cutscene can be summed up as A Series Of Conveniences. Makarov conveniently gets to Soap and Price just as they’re about to defuse the bomb, the officers they have with them are conveniently incompetent to stop any of Makarov’s men, Makarov’s men conveniently don’t notice Soap getting up to stop him from shooting Price, Ghost and Gaz are conveniently one second too late save Soap, and a train conveniently passes by to let Makarov make his escape. It’s over in less than a minute, and there’s little to no reaction from the surviving 141 members before the game starts shoving in your face that there’s a bomb you have to defuse that has conveniently not gone off yet and was conveniently missed in all of the gunfire.
Aside from the bullshit way it happened, the most disappointing thing here was the cutting of Soap’s arc and the lack of reaction from Price, Ghost, and Gaz. There was no growth for Soap in this game, no building of his story that would make his death feel like a satisfying conclusion. We just got the same Soap we’ve had in the rest of the series, and then he was gone. And the fact that we got absolutely nothing from the team in that moment was so…frustrating. Yeah, Ghost kneels by his body, and gives a brief, “Johnny!” but that’s…it? Price says nothing. Gaz rushes to the bomb and says nothing. After that moment in the cutscene, Ghost says and does nothing. There’s not even a hitch in their voices as they finish disarming the bomb. In Soap’s original death, we got Price screaming and begging over his body. We got to see his grief and pain and hurt at losing someone so close to him. Here we get…them standing over the body, a cut to black, and then a funeral cutscene that doesn’t feel earned full of commiserations that feel empty, hollow, and generic.
Maybe I’m too nostalgic for the Captain MacTavish we had in the original series, and the death they gave him that was impactful enough that people still talk about it to this day. Maybe there’s something meaningful here that I’m not seeing. Or maybe Activision can’t write for shit and rushed Soap’s death without a care just like they rushed this game as a quick cash grab to ride the hype of MW2.
Whatever the reason, these characters deserved far better.
Soap deserved better.
And I deserved to see a rebooted Captain MacTavish.
Gameplay
This section is going to be short because I didn’t spend money on this game to actually play it, I only watched gameplay. The general consensus seems to be that this game is nothing but glorified DMZ, and I can’t disagree with that. Supposedly, at least two of the campaign settings were ripped straight from Warzone, the Gulag and Verdansk Stadium, and I think that really shows how much of this game was slapped together because Activision wanted to hurry to release so they could capitalize off the CoD hype as much as possible. The combat is the same in every mission, the air support mission is as boring as ever, the NPC AI is all over the place, and the character models constantly shift from being really good to mobile game bad within the same cutscene.
I’m not saying I could do better, but I don’t think I could do worse. You can take that however you’d like.
The Writing/Storyline
Starting off, I’m going to say this with my whole chest:
Main story content should be in the main story, and not in optional or additional content.
Look, I don’t mind an easter egg here and there in DLC. I don’t mind the mention of a big bad in an extra, paid quest to build up hype. What I do mind is when the understanding of the main storyline of your game is dependent on things that happen in content that players are required to complete outside of the main game.
Do you know how we found out Alex was alive? An optional Raid.
Do you know how we learned Graves was a little bitch and wasn’t in the tank? An optional Raid.
Do you know how we–
You get my point. These kinds of reveals should have been in the main storyline because they pertain to the main storyline. Otherwise, you have people reacting with confusion because the main campaign was all they played, and they were left under the assumption that Alex may or may not be dead, that Graves burned in that tank in Las Almas, that Farah’s brother (Remember him? Activision doesn’t.) was alive and out there somewhere, etc, etc. It feels like they’re trying to do what Marvel does when they interweave their cinematic universe with their television shows: leave references to things only the more committed audience - the audience who will watch every show, play every game, see every movie, buy every DLC - would understand while punishing everyone else. It feels lazy on Activision’s end, and cheapens any kind of suspense they may leave us with going forward.
I wouldn’t even be surprised to see something like “Oh, Soap died and Makarov escaped at the end of the main campaign? Just kidding! They revealed in the newest Raid that Soap actually survived, and Makarov got hit by that train at the end.”
Outside of that, the whole storyline just feels unnecessary. This whole game feels unnecessary. I know there are rumors that this was meant to be a DLC for MW2 that got extended into a full game because Activision wanted more money, and if I didn’t already believe that, the writing would confirm it for me. Nothing feels fleshed out. Not the story, not the plot, not the characters. It all feels very surface-level and shallow, like more of the exact same thing we got in the last game, but somehow worse. The banter between the 141 is just not there, the tell don’t show when it comes to Makarov, the rapid POV switching, it all feels so thrown together, so last minute, like the writers had no idea what they wanted to do up until release.
One thing that really bothered me was the constant death fakeouts. It felt like every mission something awful would happen and one character would be left with their fate unknown in a dramatic cut to black as a cheap way to build suspense…only for that suspense to be immediately undercut by showing them alive in the very next cutscene. This happens with Farah (twice), Price, Alex (partially, there’s no cut to black, but there is a fakeout that he has been captured), and Laswell all within the first half of the game. At some point, it starts to get irritating and kills any and all suspense going forward. I was spoiled on Soap’s death, I knew it was coming before I watched the cutscenes, but by the time I got there, I was almost expecting Soap to show up in the next sequence without a scratch on him. Up until that point, I had stopped caring when characters were in danger because the writing led me to believe everyone was safe. There’s a way to build suspense, and every writer understands that, a majority of the time, less is more, so I don’t get how this went so unbelievably wrong.
The characterization is also so weirdly off. In what world would John “Somebody has to make the enemy scared of the dark. We get dirty, and the world stays clean.” Price not immediately take a kill shot when he has Makarov in custody? Soap was ready to kill every person he talked to in this game, so why did he let Makarov live? Why would Gaz advocate for giving Shepherd a gun after his multiple betrayals that he shows no remorse for? Why would Farah continue to begrudgingly work with Graves after learning about Las Almas? Why is Makarov over-explaining his plans to his victims?
I’m not saying I expect Shakespeare-level writing from a Call of Duty game, but I expect something better than whatever this is.
I don’t know who Activision hired for their writing team, but there are so many instances here where I almost have to believe that they may not have hired one at all.
Overall Thoughts
I wish I had a time machine so I could go back to who I was before I watched this campaign. This whole game was nothing but a DLC lazily stretched to two hours with assets taken from other games and a storyline that was slapped together using blindfolds, a dartboard, and too much alcohol. Please do not use your money to buy this game. Your money would be much better spent donating to help Palestine.

I've now reached the last of the main list of Cinderella stories from Cinderella Tales Around the World. The book is nowhere near over, though: after this it goes into the various "subtypes" of Cinderella, such as Donkeyskin.
The last few "official" Cinderella stories in this book are from Mexico and Chile. I was disappointed not to see more South American versions, and particularly that there were none from Brazil for @ariel-seagull-wings. But the Donkeyskin tales later in the book do include a Brazilian version, which I look forward to sharing!
Meanwhile...
*As in the versions from the Philippines, the heroine is named Maria in all three of these Latin American tales.
*The Mexican version is called Maria Cenzia, or "Cinder-Mary." The title character is a homeless orphan who lives in an ash-hole belonging to a household of black Moorish witches. They eventually discover her, take her in as a servant, and send her to the river with a black sheepskin, ordering her to wash it until it's white. But a lady appears and magically does the task for her, then gives her a magic wand to grant her wishes and puts a shining star on her forehead. When the jealous daughter of one of the witches sees this, she takes a black sheepskin to the river too, but the lady puts an ugly growth on her forehead instead of a star. Maria later uses her magic wand to give herself finery to wear to church and to give herself wings to fly home before the witches can catch her. She loses a shoe, of course, which leads to her marriage to the prince. But then the witches turn her into a dove with a magic pin. Yet one day, her father-in-law the king finds her and takes out the pin, breaking the spell, and when all is revealed, the witches are burned at the stake.
*The two Chilean versions, Maria the Cinder-Maiden and Maria the Ash-Girl, are nearly identical to each other and very similar to Maria Cenzia too. Maria persuades her father to marry a seemingly-kind widow with a daughter of her own, but is abused afterwards. She has a pet cow, which the stepmother spitefully has killed, but inside its body Maria finds a magic wand. She then has to wash the cow's organs in a stream, but they fall in and are swept away. An old woman comes along and offers to get them for her, and in return Maria cleans her house and cooks supper for her; for this, the old woman gives Maria a shining star on her forehead. The next day the envious stepsister has her own pet cow killed, takes the organs to the stream, and loses them on purpose, but she shows the old woman no kindness, and so she receives a turkey wattle on her forehead instead of a star. Some time later, there's a ball at the royal palace. Maria uses her wand to give herself finery and a coach, and of course she loses a shoe, and the prince uses it to search for her. The stepsister binds her own foot with tight bandages to make the slipper fit, but either a dog or a parrot alerts the prince, and Maria is found.
*It's interesting that the motif of the heroine receiving a shining mark on her forehead (a star, a moon, or a jewel) is found in Cinderella tales from both Latin America and Iran, yet rarely seen elsewhere. My guess is that the motif originated in the Middle East, was brought to Spain by the Arabs, and then traveled from Spain to Latin America.
*This is probably as good a time as any to discuss another recurring theme I've noticed. While around the world it varies whether the heroine's abusers are punished, forgiven, or neither, it seems that when they are punished, the worst punishment usually falls on the (step)sister(s), not the (step)mother. Just look at the Grimms' version: the stepmother is Aschenputtel's main antagonist, and she abuses her own daughters too by forcing them to cut off parts of their feet, yet in the end she goes unpunished, while her daughters' eyes are pecked out by birds. Yet even in versions where the (step)mother does get a punishment, the more brutal killing, maiming, or permanent disfigurement tends to be reserved for her daughter(s). Some versions try to justify it by portraying the sisters as abusing Cinderella more than their mother does, but most don't bother. In many versions, the simple "crime" of being Cinderella's rival is treated as if it were worse than being her chief abuser.

Let's Dissect Hate Comments on ArtecieTB's Standom video
For those who don't know, @arteicetb made a video about Viv's fandom. Specifically the toxic side of the fandom that shuns any of all criticism of both HH and HB. And, unsurprisingly, she got a few hate comments on that video and thought It would be to dissect and make fun of them.
NOTE: DO NOT ATTACK ANY OF THE PEOPLE I AM RESPONDING TO.
So these three comments are from the same person about the whole Alastor Voodoo controversy. The first one is the user trying to point out hypocrisy by saying that's bad to depict Voodoo as bad but criticizing Christianity is ok and saying that critics are hypocritical for that....
....even though Christianity itself as a religion has received criticism for MANY years due to it including things like homophobia, violence, corruption, bigotry, and a bunch of other not-great things about it. The reason why people don't like Voodoo being portrayed as bad is because it's a RACIST STEREOTYPE of it. Christianity is a religion where there are things about it to criticize, meanwhile, Voodoo doesn't have much wrong with it and is generally positive, and people are frustrated that a positive practice is always portrayed in a bad light.
The next comment is the user saying Alastor is mixed race and saying Articie should just "get over it"...I don't know how that's supposed to counter this argument lmao.
And the last comment is the user saying that there are bad Voodoo practices as if that debunks the fact that Voodoo being evil is a racist stereotype which is WHY people are criticizing this. There's also the fact that Arteice literally explained how making Alastor a bad Voodoo practitioner can work. Also, the user is just implying that Voodoo is evil with that comment? Like?
Now let's get into the next comment, which is another one involving the Alastor Voodoo stuff:
First, this user says that anybody who has a problem with Voodoo being depicted as evil are "idiots", completely disregarding people's actual reasons for why they have a problem with this due to it being a racist stereotype as I've already said. They then point out the "Hell good Heaven bad" thing as a counter-argument when, again, Christianity has been criticized for years for being a religion with many problems while Voodoo is an entirely innocent religion being unfairly demonized.
Now we have labeling Cartoonshi as bad faith even though he's himself is a FAN OF THE SHOW!
And this one is just assuming misogyny for some reason? What???? Also, you can bring up MANY male figures online to debunk this user's bullshit.
There are probably more comments like this but I'm only focusing on the deranged ones. Anyways, Viv stans are dumb, see ya.
