K-Pop Scandals 2024

This year on "scandals you couldn't make up" k-pop edition. There were a lot of lawsuits, between idols and companies as well as between idols and netizens, plus the regular dating "scandals" and disbandments. But I suppose the HYBE vs. Min Hee Jin fight overshadowed all the other shenanigans. Check out my annual list of the most important k-pop scandals of 2024.

Kol is, as may be clear, a Shadow Knight.

It is unclear how long he had been a Shadow Knight, or who he was prior, but as of the ranthredo, that is what he is. He commands a small camp of Shad worshippers (using them for almost the sole intent of executing HIS will, not Shad's), and keeps his method of death to himself.

As may be clear, he was strangled as part of his execution, but it is clear by the near-constant bruising on his body and the awkward twist of his limbs that something more than that happened. No one knows what position he held, or what his crime was, nor how he was executed. Only that he was, and was raised shortly after as a shadow knight.

He holds tattoos as most of the Knights in his camp do, as they are seen as a permanent symbol of their devotion to shad, and any who avoid getting any ink are seen as being ashamed of their god.

He is very strict with 'heretics' in his camp, but he can't read. so. if someone's reading a book about the divine, mother fucker wont know. But he also demands his knights remain celibate as... procreation isn't impossible, given circumstances, and he believes that the dead should not lay with the living, because the child will be an abomination.

He is closely tied to the other ocs in the poll, Riya and Sammen, as they all live in the same camp. He does not get along with either.

(He is not a good guy, by the way. There was no 'he was executed for an innocent crime' or 'he was wrongly convicted'. He did what he did, and what he did was bad. He continues to do bad things in Shad's name, and just for the fun of it. He is one of the first to be killed when Shad regains a human form)

Ramona grew up in Cape May, and never suffered a hatred for her hometown like most angsty teens usually did. Her lower middle-class household never made her feel deprived of anything; her mother a teacher at the elementary school, whilst her father was chief of police. Her parents were both supportive as well as caring - even with her father’s obscure hours. She was more of a father’s girl, not only glued to his side during her earlier years of life, but also seeing him as her role model even up to today.

The woman instantly took an interest in the criminal justice career path, as well as women’s advocacy; dressing up as Rosie the Reveter, as well as firefighters and cops alike for halloween growing up. Ramona was always one to be a voice for people who struggled to use theirs, or no one listened to them. Ramona was always a strong advocate for doing the right thing, even getting into fights throughout her younger years in order to help others. Ramona wound up leaving Cape May for her college years, with the push from her parents and was able to earn her BA in Criminology and Forensic Science.

Though Ramona favored this time in her life, seeing all her hard work pay off - her father was lost in a fire. It broke the young woman when she heard the news, but used that pain to help fuel her in her own career path; instantly attempting to fill in his shoes. She worked on the mainland as part of their SVU unit, consistently taking on more than she can handle in order to be taken seriously in the male-dominant field as she was gunning for a detective position. Always working by-the-book, she actually took a leap of faith when she wound up making the wrong call. No one is aware of her mess-up, seeing that she’s always been at the top of her game and her father was highly respected when he put in his time helping the community; basically making an innocent man go to jail for a crime he did not commit. It was due to the analysis of the fingerprints being faulty - but it was ultimately her gut that’s never failed her being off and her mind being fried from all the work. After the incident, she transferred to Cape May in order to be a crime analyst; both, giving her the fill of helping keep the community safe, whilst also ensuring she wasn’t going to make sure a huge mistake again.

EXTRA-EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT HER!

Being raised by her mother and father, Ramona has a strong sense of justice. She’s always the one you can count on to do the right thing, even if the choice is hard or leaves her with the short end of the stick. She loves crime shows, and also serial killer documentaries. Her love for true crime has made her the master of who-done-it scenarios, and she can figure out mystery movies within the first 15 minutes. This makes it easy for her to assume someone’s behavior, and she likes to particularly tease her friends by saying what they’re about to say - noting predictability. She also has a bit of a morbid sense of humor. Ramona is also very laidback, different from her usually tightly-wound self at work. When she’s sucked into something, just don’t intrude or she’ll snap at you. She has a tendency to be quite mean to men - this has a lot to do with her hatred of the patriarchy she lives in. There’s more of an inclining hatred towards the player-dude/bro types of men, and she’s quick to put them in their place. She also has a type of dislike towards the new money folk in Cape May; thinking they’re out of touch with Cape May’s values, as well as turning Cape May into more of a party city when it’s not in its foundation. Ramona is very outspoken and passionate when it comes to her beliefs, and she’s stubborn in them. Prone to being sarcastic, most people view her sarcasm as joking when it’s her voicing the truth. When being friends with Ramona, she’s really fun to be around; always down to do something as well as just stay in and throw a Netflix marathon. She’s always willing to help anyone out, and is someone that sticks by her group of friends in a protective manner. Definitely someone you’d want to have on your team, at the end of the day. That is, if you can handle her science facts.

How dark do you think would be the au where everyone in wmmap comes to know of their past or lp life and openly start hating Claude. Like what if that include even Diana's present living form which she mentions exists somewhere in the continent. Will everyone wanna do Claude harms like Felix, lily, ezekiel(even if he isn't yandere)? How dark would you imagine that au to be? And what do you think Claude's reaction would be if he too gains his memory? How dark can it get? Murder attempt, self-harm, emotional torture from Felix and the rest since they can't physically harm Claude? Diana's spirit should still be lingering in lp timeline after Athy's death, and Athy's spirit reincarnated in Korea so Diana after suffering through helpless torture of watching her kid's suffering couldn't find her spirit even after death? So would she run back to obelia in the present timeline to let's say exact revenge?Do you think felix, lily and maybe even Jeanette go through self harm sessions cuz the memories of their past life would've been too painful to cope with? They couldn't save her and also contributed to her death in a way? Athy and lucas suddenly finding everyone around them very changed as in they can't look at athy or get ptsd by the sight of her after having knowledge of her horrible death? Will lp timeline come to haunt everybody? Would that have potential to be really really dark? And as much as I love yandere kiel, I really really really wanna know more about human or non yandere kiel rage, pain, and methods of coping.

tw mentions of self harm

The entire cast is too nice and they are almost all Claude simps. I don't think they would want to harm him...physically. Felix would be the last person on earth to want to harm him. He was just following orders and even in the canon timeline he stood by as Claude threatened her. Where was he when Claude attempted to kill her? He is his guard, shouldn't he be always at his master's side?

I think he counts as a lawful neutral. He will stand by watching someone get executed or kill the person himself if his ruler orders him to do so.

"Lawful neutral beings believe in a strong, well-ordered government, whether that government is a tyranny or benevolent democracy. The benefits of organization and regimentation outweigh any moral questions raised by their actions. Lawful neutral beings will uphold the law regardless of whether it is considered just or not. If the majority of the population disagrees with the practices of the government, then they must use legal means of getting those laws changed. [...] In their day-to-day affairs, lawful neutrals will adhere to the laws of the area they are in, and will also maintain their own sense of honor. "

Of course he'd feel guilty that Athy was wrongly convicted, but he'd tell himself that he was only following orders and they were all victims of Rosalia's scheme. He'd blame Claude's behaviour on dark magic or he'd just separate LP Claude from wmmap Claude in his mind.

Realistically the closest thing to him punishing Claude is him stopping acting like his friend. He just follows orders like a robot, he is bright and cheerful around others but when Claude appears his smile falls off his face in an instant and he acts distant. He doesn't talk to Claude until prompted and his answers are short, his voice without life. Alternatively: he quits his job but I bet Claude would know how to prevent him from leaving.

He might support Athy just by neglecting his duties and feeding her information. Claude is too op to be harmed by anyone other than Lucas, Jen/Aety and Athy. It might be worth the try to harm him during sparring practice or a duel just like good old times where Claude might deactivate his protection spells but I wouldn’t bet on that working. Felix would need a really good reason for going against his master (like being Diana’s ex lover or Athy being his daughter). He barely knew LP Athy. Would he feel regretful about her death? Sure. Would he go commit regicide for her ehh no. Reminder this is the man who stood by as Claude slaughtered an entire castle of innocent women. Mentally he’s the strongest. He commited atrocities and witnessed Claude commit atrocities. Self harm is off the table, I think.

Jennette Margarita:

yeah I can see Jennette doing mild forms of self-harm (refusing to eat because she lost appetite, biting her lips nervously, scratching her arm) and isolating herself from her loved ones out of fear that she could hurt them. She'd try to avoid Claude as much as she could and act incredibly protective of Athy. She'd be just very very nice and considerate, blaming herself for the slightest drop in Athy's mood and anything bad that befalls her. Probably has insomnia triggered by nightmares about the lp verse where she would wake up with tears in her eyes and have troubles to fall asleep again. She’d wear long sleeved dresses to hide her wounds and puts makeup on her face that cover her swollen red eyes. At first Jennette would be in denial about the memories from her past life but when once she has realized that some events from her dreams are coming true, she would get nervous and would be really pushy in her friendship with Athy. After Claude’s first murder attempt happened and Athy sought refuge, (as much as it pains her) she might resort to lock up Athy in the Alpheus mansion for her own good.

I guess novel Jennette would just kill him. She already blamed him for the death of her parents. If she'd cared about Athy, she'd make him suffer. Since Jennette acts as a toxic painkiller and being without Jennette makes Claude feel pain, she'd try to be around Claude alot and then suddenly disappear (vocation, friends, a trip) and let him suffer for a week or two before she appears again. Basically she would switch between giving him the equivalent of a drug overdose and a drug withdrawl aiming for his maximum suffering until he is dead. She'd try to rub salt into his wound too by saying it's what he deserves. And in the last moments before his death she would reveal that she had been Anastacius’ daughter all along.

Maybe she'd feel a bit guilty about the things her past self had done but I have the feeling novel Jennette tends to shift the blame onto others and wallows in self-pity.

Before she kills Claude she would stir up the nobles and commoners against him. She would polish her reputation too. For example she would donate money to the temples and orphanages to make herself look like a saintess while spreading bad rumors about Claude (or just reminding the public of the crimes he is guilty of) until the people wished she or Athy were empress and then she would rush to their aid, slay the evil tyrant and play their savior.

Ijekiel Alpheus:

recognizes that Claude and wmmap Claude are different people, but would be ill at ease around him. Viewing this life as a second chance he'd be way more forward in his affections. The confession would occur earlier, because he never got to confess before. It's his hesitance he curses. This Kiel would be much more proactive. During their childhood he would remind Athy that she will always have people who care about her even if his majesty would stop loving her. He'd tell her she has a place to stay even if everyone turns their back on her. When the amnesia arc happens he gives Claude up entirely and supports the anti-Emperor faction. It's the best for her if Claude dies or gets imprisoned. He'd try to make her understand how unhealthy her attachment to her father is.

Should Athy even hint that she prefers Lucas over him, he would stop wooing her immediately. He'd accept his unrequited feelings as punishment for his past self's actions and suffer in silence. Standing in the shadows, supporting her to the best of his abilities, and admiring her from afar is the only thing he allows himself to do. This is his punishment. He would lay down his life for her in exchange for the life his family took from her.

Lilian York: Believe me if she had the ability to kill him she would. The only things she can do is 1. glare at him 2. remind the servants what a shitty emperor Claude is 3. raise Athy with survival skills and a healthy dose of hatred for her neglectful parent 4. stage a kidnapping and let Athy be raised in the York villa until she’s old enough to claim the throne if she wants to. Lily would prefer to live a quiet and peaceful life with Athy and never see Claude again but if Athy really wants to raise a rebellion she would support her after her attempts to change her mind would find strong opposition.

Diana:

I have the feeling she would only be very sad. When she reincarnates and gets her memories back she would seek out Claude immediately. Perhaps during a national holiday where he has to appear in public. She would cry and hit his chest and just ask "Why why why? Why did you kill our child?". The guards would drag her away but Claude would never forget the sight of that woman again.

Dark! Diana would seduce Claude and then kill him as revenge (this is so ooc but I'd love to see it happen in a fanfic.

Not the same person but just wanted to thank you for saying that people don't need to be held up to a specific standard of evidence to be believed, or at least to believe themselves. It took years for me to accept that anything that happened to me was abuse, and on top of that it's seemingly random which memories of mine are clear or vague, and like memories just get filed away sometimes until they randomly come back. I'll probably still always be paranoid that the one person in real life I told about it didn't actually believe me, in part because she joked once that my life would make a compelling book, but that at least helped me believe myself and since at this point, even if I could handle doing anything legally, it would be my word against theirs and that's just not something I want to even get into, believing myself and personally moving on is the most I hope for now, to just try to not be paranoid that I made it all up anymore.

Yes, absolutely.

I completely relate to the whole legal action thing. I wrote about it in a short post, that "[...] the legal system is not willing to set a precedent by re-examining their entire policy on evidence to accommodate for a survivor like me. society is blindly shaped around the fact that, legally, you either have evidence or you’re making it up. there is no consideration for the fact that some survivors have little to no evidence and are thus branded as liars or attention-seekers."

I think society, especially in America, holds court systems, law, etc at such a high standard that it often supersedes the truth. We've historically seen people wrongly convicted or sentenced to death, as well as too many victims being dismissed, "justice" being unjust, and yet we haven't reached a paradigm shift. Sometimes I can't believe how far behind we are on so many fundamental things.

Please remember that the law cannot truly dictate what is real. For example, even if I went to court over speaking up and lost, it doesn't mean that I made it up. Nobody can take away the truth. You are a valid survivor.

TW's: yandere content, manga spoilers (culling game mentioned very briefly), unhealthy relationships, we love a man with morals <3, protective behavior 

✧ firstly, Hiromi isn't a bad yandere to have. He believes in justice, fully, and has pretty strong morals. I can't really ever imagine him doing anything cruel towards his darling, it'd weigh on him way too much. Since his darling is someone he knows pretty well, considering he represented their relative in court, it's not hard for him to get close to them. That's all Hiromi really wants, anyway. Being around them just makes him extremely happy, and they give him hope. Obviously, they're devastated when their relative is wrongly convicted, and he's definitely going to be there to support them. 

✧ Hiromi isn't a bad guy, either. Before the Culling Game, I can see him being content with just being a friend of his darlings. He knows that they might not want to be with him romantically yet - maybe they have reservations due to the professional relationship they were supposed to have - and he's fine with that for the most part. Hiromi is a very docile yandere, and hardly ever puts himself in the way of his darling's life unless it's absolutely necessary. Of course, this is before he's dragged into the Culling, but like I said, Hiromi is extremely docile with his darling. 

✧ afterwards, though, he does everything in his power in order to keep them safe. Hiromi revolves himself around justice, and he'd be pissed if his darling was killed. He'd see it as an injustice given from the world itself and he would make his suffering everyone else's problem. I think a darling who couldn't see curses would fit Hiromi better, but obviously this man isn't picky about something like that. He just wants his darling to be happy and safe, and if they find happiness by being with him, who is he to deny them? Husband material, by the way.

My favorite thing is how often the Bates show their “baby bumps” in either black outfits that are completely slimming or when they know good and well they have no bump at all. They could at least do the chalkboard like Jinger and let us know how big the baby is. Otherwise it literally doesn’t look like they’re pregnant at all.

Eh that doesn't bother me as much because bump or no, they are pregnant and probably just want to talk about it. Plus as pro-lifers they probably want to start emphasizing the baby-ness of their pregnancy as early as possible.

Ok this is kind of a tangent but you mentioned them wearing black so I physically can't not mention it (also murder & crime tw): I've been getting into the West Memphis Three case again which if you don't know, is the case of 3 teenage boys in Arkansas who were wrongly convicted of the murder of 3 little boys on the basis that the teenagers wore black and liked Metallica, so the jury chalked the murders up to ritual sacrifices (spoiler alert: they were not).

Anyway it's just an interesting contrast to me that the exact same kind of people (southern baptists, evangelicals, etc) who convicted those boys based on wearing all black or having black hair and nails are now completely embracing it, like you mentioned they constantly wear black and Katie Bates is going to have black bridesmaids dresses for fucks sake. Just funny how those things work.

I'm so TIRED of this, SA and pedophilia is treated like a joke where I am. There has been so many cases of rape but so little have been convicted. Not to mention the cases where even if the predators were convicted, they got out early or people supported their actions

There was this viral issue a while back where this singer/local celebrity was released out of prison for pedophilia (Saipul Jamil). And he was greeted like a celebrity who was wrongly accused, he came out in a white car adorned with flowers, people were throwing flowers at him, he got invited to TV shows, and he and I quote, "Forgive the boys (the ones he preyed on) for putting him in jail."

AND HE WAS LOVED AND CHERISHED FOR IT

Not to mention another case where this coach for a volleyball girls team, raped the entire team. Who all stayed quiet until now, one of the girls are pregnant with his child. Which brings me to another point, abortion here is almost not an option AT ALL, the victim is either forced to marry the rapist or just raise the child.

Which would've happened to this other girl who got drugged and raped in her slumber by a police officer. The girl begged the police's mother to help her, only to get shamed and pushed to abort the child. Yk what happened in the end? She killed herself beside her late father's grave.

I'm sorry that this turned into a rant but I'm exhausted, I'm so tired of seeing these in the news and feeling so fucking helpless.

Please PLEASE take things like these seriously! These people who prey on girls and boys / women and men are not okay! It's not the victim's fault, it's not because of what they wear, and it's definitely not because they flirted with them. No one, and I mean no one wants to be SA'ed what makes you think they'd flirt with dangerous people???

I'm sorry again that this turned into a rant but again, please take things like these seriously. If you see something happening, do something, directly or indirectly. Please.

West Memphis Three. It's in reference to the trial of three teenage boys in the 1990s who were accused of killing three second-graders in Arkansas. They were accused of doing so as part of a "satanic ritual", it was largely thought that because of the boy's appearance/music/etc. they were wrongly blamed for the murders. They were convicted and sent to prison, with one being put on death row.

As more evidence and questions about possible police tampering came forward it cast doubt on the convictions. This included DNA evidence that did not match any of the three boys (came to light in 2007). They were released in 2011 as part of a strange plea deal that allowed them to claim their innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors had enough evidence against them to convict.

Several songs were written about the trial and a couple different films were made. The audio at the start of knives and pens is actually real audio from the trial. The three boys were essentially the victims of "occult" hysteria in the Bible Belt.

VERY BRIEF HISTORY.

jospeh warren died when nate was three, his mom when he was five made the tough decision of moving to new jersey. she wanted a better life for her son and despite having no father figure growing up, nia wouldn’t have changed the life she worked hard to provide for her son for the world. they struggled but they got by and nate was always with a smile.

since learning about his dad’s gang involvement and his relationship with his mom being heavily influenced by drugs  (  one sided  )  he’s pretty much anti-drugs. he’s never experimented and has never/will never be tempted. 

from as long as he was consciously able to think it, he’s always wanted to protect and get a job to provide for his mom and through hard work and sheer determination he got the grades to pursue the career he wanted. 

at 25 his high school sweetheart, alisha, died in result of a drive by shooting. the scenes that unfolded forever scarred his memory. her killers were given life imprisonment and it gave nate the push to take the job offer he’d been sitting on for nearly a year.

the only person that knows his current mission is his mom, she hasn’t and will continue to not tell a soul, her friends are under the impression that after alisha’s death nate took to the military. 

it took months before nate entered charming as mickey montgomery. birth certificates had to be created and passed through the correct systems, his records had to be fabricated so if anyone chose to dig into his past for whatever reason, they’d see mickey’s colourful past. only sibling, parents dead, two wrongly given jail convictions for robbery and so on. not even the cops know he’s a cop, his assignment has come from those in higher positions. 

the red flag they’ve planted in his records if someone’s doing a background check and it’s serious? his fake middle name. nia. no one will be able to know this unless they’re looking deep and if they question him on it? because lets be honest, it’s not a normal middle name for a guy, he’ll know exactly what’s going on.

his salary goes to his bank accounts he can only access online, his cards etc are all the way back in new jersey, every single purchase he makes with always be under his alias. even his hospital records are for mickey montgomery.

hm, i was just thinking abt the whole avery dassey case and llike I watch a lot of true crime and I've watched a few abt innocent people wrongly convicted and then released years later but I've never watched a case that is still on going yk

and like, I usually feel distant from a story. specially bc it happens so long ago that doesn't feel like it and this one feels real bc they're still in jail, its been what 2 years after the second season and they're still in prison.

yes, I've been obsessed w vases bc for personal reasons; yes, I've seen 48hr live; yes, I've been touched by loads of different stories but this one besides being touched by it, this one is the first that feels real and this is insane to me.

like, actual insane bc these aren't cases that I finished reading/watching and then I googled and this worked out years ago. no, like, nothing happened.

I probably don't make any sense and idk how to really explain the feeling so idk

Novel Prep Tag Game: Deity Complex

My main was tagged by @captainrynna!!! I’m a couple days late, but thank you!!! I’m doing it over my secondary WIP, because I already had a drawing of the protag prepared and I wasn’t emotionally ready to commit to a design for Ember from Firebreathers. Because that’s how my brain chooses to do things ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

First Look:

1. Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences. There’s too much fucking corn in America.

More seriously, though: 19-year-old bus crash survivor tries to keep as far away as possible from the government that wants to use their mutation to commit war crimes.They do so by hitch hiking, stealing cars, and navigating the endless highways of the USA.

2. How long do you plan for your novel to be? Probably just one book, around 100k words. It’s not the most thought-out of ideas yet.

3. What’s your novel’s aesthetic? I made a board for it on my pinterest, but there’s like. 4 pins. It’s hard to pin down (no pun intended), and the images on question 5 are also relevant to it, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4. What other stories have inspired your novel? This will sound weird, considering the lack of context for this WIP, but Captain America: Civil War comes to mind, as well as the Percy Jackson series.

Main Characters:

6. Who is your protagonist? Hunter Carrol, a 19-year-old ‘’’convict’’’ running from government research facilities whose experiments on them may or may not have eventually resulted in the deadliest weapon of war to date, if they had stayed.

7. Who is their closest ally? Viola Waters, once Hunter starts opening up to her.

8. Who is their enemy? Agent Markus Rutherford of the Federal Bureau of Switched Activity. He’s the agent who first brought Hunter to the FBSA research facilities, and he’s been on their tail since they escaped.

9. What do they want more than anything? They just want to see their parents, man. It’s been like, nine months, and shit’s been pretty traumatic. Mom’s cookies would be a real pick-me-up, y’know?

10. Why can’t they have it? The government has deemed Hunter too much of a danger to the public/asset to their research to let them go easily. So they’ve been endlessly following the signs of where Hunter has been to get them back.

11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves? That they’re the sole reason 20 of their classmates died in a bus crash. I know, it’s dark.

12. Draw your character. I did this a while ago, and it’s actually also on my youtube channel, with a bit of a haphazard intro to them! The info in that vid is a little outdated, though. This is a zoomed in screenshot, cause I did it on a too-big canvas and never cropped it LOL:

13. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protag? Being brought back to the research labs again, with an even lower chance of being able to get out and see their parents.

Plot Points:

14. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story? Hunter will find out that they weren’t the only kid with a Deity Complex being detained in the FBSA research labs, and they’ll immediately want to get the others out, too.

15. Do you know how it ends? Not yet LOL, the story is barely developed further than two (2) plot points so far.

16. What is the theme? I know I want to explore the ideas of bodily autonomy/consent (if one can save thousands of others by sacrificing themselves, is it ethical to force them to?) and whether there’s ever a good reason to go to war.

17. What is a recurring symbol? I don’t really have a symbol in mind, right now... unless the smell of campfires and the appearance of white animals counts as, like, a symbolic representation of the two main characters.

18. Where is the story set? Mainly on the highways and backroads of the U.S., but general region depends on when in the story.

19. Do you have images and scenes in mind already? A couple, but nothing too specific, yet. I’m only like, 4.5k into writing it, and it’s the first time I’ve actually tried to pin down the idea. So I’m excited to see where it goes!

20. What excited you about this story? Being able to explore the Switched Universe, and also confronting themes that are integral to my view on activism!

21. What is your usual writing method? For this story, I only really write in it when I’m a.) stuck in Firebreathers, and b.) motivated to work on the next scene. So I don’t have a great method for this one yet, as it’s technically a side project.

Writing Blurb 9

I wrote this earlier this year, back in May, when I was just starting to get into the show Person of Interest. If you like whump, I highly recommend it, it has SO much of it, just in the first couple episodes! Anyway, I did a lot of daydreaming about how Reese from the show and my character Risa would interact, and came up with this scene. It’s wonderfully whumpy and I figured y’all would enjoy it.

TW: non con touch, force-feeding, being drugged, burning, torture

Reese came to hesitantly. The sleep that had taken him had been deep and did not release him willingly, nor he it. But consciousness called, a distant part reminding him that he wasn't supposed to be sleeping. That this was out of the ordinary. He moaned softly, head lolling to the side as he weakly attempted to rouse himself.

"The most basic of truth potions are actually rather easy to make." A voice he didn't recognize spoke. He forced his eyes open, and realized suddenly that where he rested wasn't comfortable either. He was in a chair, hands bound painfully tight with something unusually strong. And yet, the sleepiness still clung to him as a figure began to circle him.

"Mint, a couple fire toads, and ibis feathers. Boil the toads until they're heating the water on their own, toss in the mint. Throw out the water, but keep the heat on, kill the toads and let the mint boil in their blood for about thirty minutes, steaming the feathers above it. Slowly lower the feathers in, wait a bit, and you'll know when it's done because the feathers will disappear and the liquid will turn from red to clear." His eyes could barely focus, having difficulty trying to see who had captured him. Somehow, his mind wasn't moving. He couldn't think. The person stopped in front of him, and he felt a rough-skinned hand grip his chin, lifting it so his eyes were aimed at a face, darkened by a light behind it. 

"Mm. Time to wake up, Reese." She said, and the most awful smell suddenly entered his nose. All drowsiness fled in an instant, head rearing back, smacking against the back of the wooden chair. There was a laugh. "Oh my gosh, smelling salts were such a good investment…"

Reese looked around wildly, heart pounding, confused. His seat was in the bright light of a light overhead, all around him mostly darkness, though he could make out wooden crates here and there. Standing in front of him was a young woman. She was thin, and completely covered up by a metal bodysuit and a smooth, round, glass helmet. Not a single inch of skin or hair was visible, and he recognized her. Countless close calls and 'just missed' numbers, all dead at her hands. He strained against his bonds, but could tell it was futile. Had she used steel cable?

"Where am I?" He hissed, glaring up at her.

"Does it matter?" She shrugged. "The point is, I got you here, and you're going to answer some questions for me."

"What kind of questions?" He narrowed his eyes.

"About you, of course," She said sweetly. "Like who you work for, and how you keep showing up at the right place at the right time… all that."

"And you think I'm just gonna give it to you?" Reese scoffed. "That easy?"

"No." She replied. "I have something prepared for you--not a weak-ass little mint julep of a truth potion, but the real deal." She said, back into the shadows and dragging into the light a small camper stove on wheels. The round top was closed, smoke trailing from the vent on the side. 

"Truth potion?" Reese smiled, leaning back in his chair. "Oh, of course…" He chuckled. The woman studied him. She had little antennae on her helmet, and now they were flattened on their own. 

"Now, like I said before," She turned to the darkness again, returning with a small blue vial of liquid. "A weak little truth potion takes mint, fire toads, and ibis feathers. I figured you'd be a stubborn one, so I went the whole five yards--king ibis feathers, real wasabi, blood of a wrongly convicted man, and," She opened the lid of the small grill, revealing a small pile of charcoal briquettes, glowing red hot. "A hot coal." Reese couldn't believe it.

He had woken up to find himself kidnapped by a freak. A freak who believed in magic. He sighed deeply.

"Alright, let's get this over with." He said quietly.

"I agree." She nodded, and turned. Using thinly-gloved hands, she picked up a red-hot coal without tongs, stepped over to him. She grabbed his nose faster than he could have prepared for, and he was suddenly opening his mouth. And being inserted into that mouth was the red hot coal. 

Reese did not often scream from pain, but he did this time. The coal touched his tongue and instantly seared it. He screeched in pain, trying to move away, but she held it there in his mouth.

Then, all at once, she removed it. He didn't have much time to appreciate the lack of heat when she poured the contents of the small, blue bottle into his mouth and then forcefully shutting it. He had hoped it had had some kind of a cooling effect, but it did not. 

The hot coal had seared off the first layers of skin away, and felt like it had cracks. The solution now going over it was, in no shape or form, any kind of relief. What he had thought was pain when that coal had rested on his tongue, it paled in comparison to this. Absolute agony was unleashed in his mouth and he screamed behind his lips. The woman's hands still gripped his head as he writhed and flailed in the chair, the flavor metallic and rotting, the pain indescribable. It clouded his mind, and he felt like he was shutting down, like he was dying. 

He grew weaker and weaker, the woman eventually letting go of his head, letting it loll back as he whimpered softly.

"Now, Reese," The woman now put her helmet very close to his face. "Tell me everything."

Reese felt paralyzed, like his tongue was too big and too damaged to do anything. His hearing had disintegrated to a dull roar, but distantly, oh so distantly, he could hear himself speaking. He couldn't understand what he was saying, but he knew he was speaking. 

He stayed like this for what felt like hours, like he was almost floating--no, falling, nonstop, unable to hear, to think, to feel. Then, all at once, like coming to an immediate stop in a fast-moving vehicle, he snapped back. The fog choking him disappeared and his senses snapped back so suddenly, his whole body jerked back violently. 

He sat there, gasping, glancing around blearily, feeling like his heart was going to jump out of his chest. The woman was still in front of him. 

"It's always so fun to see that wear off." She commented, a smile in her voice. He noticed a syringe in hand, unused. "How was it?"

Reese didn't respond immediately. The pain in his mouth was still present, but fading. His tongue felt stiff, and like it was covered in thin sheets of glass. He spat, his spit black with soot. 

"What did you do to me?" He spat.

"Truth potion, as I said earlier. Truth hurts like hell when it comes up, but you always feel better afterwards." She shrugged, pulling the cap off the syringe. He leaned back.

"What's that?" He asked, swallowing.

"Sedative. While I know for a fact you can't and won't get out of my captivity, you super-military types can still be slippery." She took hold of his head, her grip surprisingly strong, and jabbed the needle in his neck. He winced, trying to fight, but the sedative was as strong as it was fast-acting. Sleep once again took hold of him and dragged him down into darkness. 

Risa held his head until a minute after he stopped moving, then let go, letting it rest against the chair back. 

"Alright, information part 1 got, now on to part 2." She drew her sword, slicing off the wire that had held Reese and taking him to her captive cells.
