X-Manson Annotated Chapter 5 - Part Six: "APOCALYPSE AND AUTISTIC PSYCHIC PROTECTION"
This fanfiction is fucking stupid. But we're almost done. The show must go on, everybody! :) We're going to be getting into some gross shit, but that's hardly new.
*Your U.N Secretary General, everybody. (Just joking, he doesn't look like this in the story, you'll see. it would be funnier if he did.)
**Cable and Xavier are biased in favor of psis. But now we're seeing further holes in the cult's internal mythology. this is showing that they were making things up as they went along.
***I don't totally see how autistic people can mirror psychic signals. But whatever, Doctor Benway.
*Nonverbal, they probably wouldn't have spoken even if born in more pleasant circumstances.
**They stopped actively trying after the twins?
***So Jean and Betsy and everyone else was probably still talking, possibly while being puppeted by Xavier or Cable.
James is referencing the psychologist "J.Phillippe Rushton" here. Or at least, he is the closest person I've found to matching this description. He ranked various ethnicities based on his Differential K Theory. In this theory, he attempted to "Explain the differences in intelligence, fertility, criminality, and sexual autonomy between the races". It goes without saying that it is racist pseudo-science.
Thought, I'm not entirely sure how this ended up being where the cult evolved. I think Benway put it in the story to add a bit more layers to it. Maybe the specificity of placing jews and first nations people at the bottom is a petty response by Xavier that's somewhat directed at Erich, Gabrielle, and the Proudstars?
The cult's racist dogma also explains why the new mutants are missing any reference to Roberto, but it doesn't account for the inclusion of Ororo and the "Arab Woman" in the fold. It also doesn't totally explain why Ororo wasn't cored like Jean. Is it because she isn't a psi?
****This explains why Kitty in the present hasn't had her period in years. She probably was given the crudest surgery on the planet. (If I had to guess, probably done by McCoy.)
20 children. That's only the ones found in the mansion. This isn't taking into account anyone born in the cult that reside outside in the town surrounding the mansion.
*This might be true, seeing as how there's evidence that the Kelly amendment has made few strides in terms of actual equality for mutants.
Could the children born in the cult possible not even be mutants? It's slim, but it might be true. Granted, Proudstar said that the cult killed children who were not born psychic, so human children probably wouldn't do well. So, a possible 20 psychic children have been sent away from the cult's influence?
*oh yeah, he sounds really intimidating, Ororo.
*Weird hobby to have.
ESN: Oh Ozymandias dear boy, could you select for me a set of those insane letters, I need a hearty chuckle this evening.
****This still seems to be the case with actual America.
*yeah.
*Typical cult paranoia?
**Maybe ESN is making himself smaller than his body actually is so that he doesn't actively physically intimidate people.
Goes without saying, real world Suez Crisis.
Erich used his abilities to make bombs, missiles, and planes not work?
I can see why that might be something to raise a fuss over.
*This seems very far in the past, but it would have felt like the immediate future to someone like Benway or ESN.
**Is this because these are places where nukes were actively used?
***Proactive response.
Amelia Vought is completely human?

This is, for lack of a better word, an old-fashioned sort of racism that I don't usually see popularly bandied about. Usually, this sort of scientific racism masks itself through stuff like "IQ differences" and what not. That's typically laundered through liberal publications like the NYT that foolishly provide a platform for racists like Charles Murray. 'Fun' fact - this sort of thing is how the word 'Caucasian' came to popularly refer to white people in general, and not just Nakh/Nokhchi, Georgians, etc. The fetishization of 'Circassian beauty' is seen from the medieval period onwards. But in the 18th Century, the cranial shape of a particular Georgian woman was seen as the archetype of white beauty by Johann Friedirich Blumenbach, an anthropologist/zoologist. To put a long story short, Blumenbach believed that mankind originated with a white Adam and Eve in the Caucasus mountains. He thought that all other people-groups of differing skin colors were subjected to degeneration from environmental factors and were hence inferior. Thus, the term Caucasian entered into the lexicon of race science and is still used to this day.

Name: Kiri Stephens Occupation: N/A Age: Appears 48; actually 48 Sexuality: Lesbian Species: Vampire Clan/Pack/Coven: Clan Lomidze Hometown: Auckland, New Zealand Relationship Status: Married (I guess??) Personality Traits: Intelligent, efficient, organized, patient, ruthless, calculating, standoffish, arrogant, vindictive
Biography (tw: racism/colonialism, kidnapping, torture, death)
Magic was something that Kiri was born into, though in her community, they didn't call it that. Her family comes from a long line of tohunga, Maori priests and healers who used the natural world and its abundances for their craft. However, it was never called witchcraft, for fear of persecution from settlers who already perceived them as primitive for their practices. Her own parents and siblings preferred to assimilate into the tidy little boxes that the world crafted for them, while Kiri craved learning more. She wanted to fill in the all of the gaps in knowledge left behind by colonial violence that stamped out anything that was different.
So at 18, she left Aotearoa behind and set off for the United States, seeking out an advanced degree in biochemistry while also learning all she could about her history and practices that have since been lost.
The wider world of the supernatural is opened up to her while she is trying to get her PhD in traditional Maori practices combined with the latest pharmaceutical endeavors, using it as a way to carve her way into the world she demanded. It is through this that she met an elder, someone who still seemingly held knowledge from a long-forgotten time, and eventually encourages Kiri to make her way to Port Leiry.
Once there, Kiri learned that the world was so much wider than she was initially led to believe. The Circle of the Phial welcomed her, and for the first time in her life, Kiri felt like she had a proper place somewhere. No longer was she chased away from knowledge that she felt entitled to know, and her mentor was thrilled to have someone to pass along said knowledge to carry on their culture, rather than led it fade away over time. Combined with Kiri's natural talent and her scientific background, she built a reputation for herself as particularly skilled with developing drugs and salves for illnesses and injuries, that were grounded in both traditional techniques as well as scientific advances. Kiri flourishes, reaching for higher goals and with them, riskier substances, particularly in ways to not only heal witches from attacks by other supernatural creatures, but to provide an offensive edge as well.
It's this ambition that has Kiri crossing into Westriver Gardens one day by herself, in search of a rare plant that had particularly potent numbing capabilities, originally local to her homeland but now transplanted into the Pacific Northwest. She doesn't anticipate being stopped by the owner of the Gardens herself, and is even more surprised that she manages to get away wholly unscathed. Rather than a threat, Laure proved to be the next person to change Kiri's life.
For the first time in decades, her ambition takes a backseat to this new development in her life. They dance around each other for months before taking the next leap, and after that, everything is history. She spends the next 12 years happily thriving in her relationship, and seeing what perks came with loving someone who was immortal. With it came bursts of creativity, unbound by issues of cost or material. The apothecary she runs leans into the tourist trap notions of spells and curses, while also providing all supernatural creatures with a variety of magical potions and enhancements. She reconnects with the family she thought she had walked away from, in the form of a niece and a protege. It's the closest thing to bliss that Kiri has ever been able to imagine.
What she kept secret from everyone, including her wife, were Kiri's recent experiments into new types of potions that, instead of enhancing traits, would work to suppress them. They were meant to be a means of easing this way of life to the people who were unwillingly brought into it. A potion to artificially flavor animal blood to mimic the qualities of a human or a witch, an elixir that allowed a wolf to sleep through the full moon in peace without the loss of control, a combination of herbs to help quiet the voices from the other side. An arguably noble motive, but one that could lead to disastrous consequences if exploited.
She never got far in these endeavors, sidetracked by the upcoming ceremony where she would transition from witch to vampire. She assumed that she would have eternity to continue working on such things, even without her natural magic.
The initial attack is a blur, iron tang in her mouth as an athame slices across her throat. Not deep enough to kill, but enough to spill the blood that is necessary for this ruse. She can still sometimes smell the way the crimson viscera poured out onto the concrete. She assumes it means her death.
She has never been so wrong.
When she wakes, she sees only her. For three years, she lives, solely at Lana's discretion. The vampire says it's because she needs a witch, to undo what another has done, but even if that was within her realm of magic, Kiri refuses. She languishes in the dark, provided updates on the outside world, on her wife, from a cruel voice, and she feels her mind begin to fray.
The masquerade is the final straw. Lana brings Kiri as her date, so she can see with her own eyes the indiscretions of her wife. She watches as Laure flaunts around a younger creature, a vampire, dressed in one of Kiri's favorite gowns. She watches as she dances with a human, whispering sweetly in her ear. She watches as her wife stands three feet away and is unable to hear Kiri's internal screaming while Lana bites into her neck.
At the end of the night, she returns to the cramped space that has become hers over the last several years. When Lana inevitably visits her, the pain and humiliation have twisted her into something inconsolable. So she begs, and Lana provides. It is a far cry from the detailed plan that she had created with her wife, but Lana takes her time. Shows her the closest thing to gentleness that she's felt in three years, and it ends with the snap of her neck.

Thereis a difference between everyone doing something problematic and being with a certified racist who said (TW: RACISM, SEXUAL ASSAULT) he gets off on the p*rn that actively humiliates black women in the most disgusting way(by white men ) after saying things like ' anyone who tolerates white supremacy is disgusting' and saying how much she cares about black community. Not hanging out with people who is actively damaging the community s the bare minimum she could do. And weren't you against Calvin because how much of a misogynist he was? No one is perfect can be applied in many places but this is not one if those
I could never be you
First of all, I know the whole fandom finds this cnc porn to be the most evil thing about him, but like I cannot. I'm sorry but there is 0 way, as in literally ZERO WAY, that what you like in FICTION (and porn is FICTION) means you like it in real life. That is now how it works. It isn't magically how it works with porn. Many many MANY studies have been done about this and there has not been a link proven between violence in porn and real life violent even inclinations. At absolute best, studies are inconclusive and contradict each other. The reality is, however, that the more scientific and unbiased a study is, the less it shows a relation. Studies that show high relationships are paid for by special interest (namely religious) groups. From a scientific perspective, I do not and will not ever use the porn someone watches as evidence that they are actually a bad person unless it is illegal and truly unconsensual. Ghetto Gaggers is not that. The women in these videos are consensual sex workers who agreed to this, and thus, watching it and enjoying watching it is not enjoying watching a literal sex crime. It's fiction. And what you like in fiction does not determine what you like in real life. You don't have to like what he does, I don't. But you can't pick and choose what consensual kinks to decide are actually morally bad. Consensual kink is not morally bad, it just isn't. That goes for kinks you don't like too.
Second, all the other things Matty has done are reprehensible in that he's a misogynistic edgelord who thinks he's cool kind of way. And I don't vibe! But getting dicked down by a dude who has not stopped talking about wishing he treated her right for fucking 9 years after the sudden loss of the most committed relationship she's ever had is not the same as dating calvin! like I hate to put it in those terms, but seriously, how many more ways does Tree have to tell you that they're literally just fucking and that to her, this is just sex? She's hooking up with him and they are having fun and Taylor has a long history of taking her mind off her problems with sex and so she's doing it again and like I can't be mad at her for it. Sorry, but I'm built different.
If it becomes something else, I'll adjust accordingly. But for now, I'm glad she's got someone consistent to get her mind off it and I hope she's well.

POOR THINGS (2023)
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Emma Stone (Bella), Mark Ruffalo (Duncan Wedderburn) ,Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe)
2.5/5
REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS
TW// SEX, RAPE, RACISM (?)
The primary discourse I've heard about this film has been due to an inaccurate perspective on female empowerment through a cis male's eye, which I completely agree with. This film does miss the mark on what could be a truly empowering piece of art. However, in terms of cinematography, performance and mise en scene, it is stunning, visually interesting and quirky. I am always excited by steampunk stylistic choices, and Lanthimos creates a strange reality through this style. I especially give props to the costume design, it is really great in this film. I also really did enjoy the use of CGI, and that is unusual for me as I often prefer practical effects.
I would like to say this film was successful with it's ideas on feminism, which I'm sure many of you are talking about, but it also has a weak narrative ending, which unfortunately brings down my review and leads me to believe it is not successfully empowering. Viewers are led to believe that Bella Baxter will go on to become a doctor as soon as she quite literally declares to Godwin her interest in science and health. We are also led to believe that she goes on to become highly educated, finding joy in reading and studying, however, one thing that Lanthimos forgot to portray was the viewers actually being able to see this? By the end, we simply hear about her anatomy exam, she is not shown to do anything scientifically phenomenal, as we believe she will. The fact it is a film portraying feminism means it is important we see female success, but we don't. Another thing that makes this film fail on the womanhood mark is her final joys, she only finds happiness in a domestic setting or during sex, and her eventual happiness is set in an idyllic household where she orders other women about, and simply watches in domestic bliss, which just furthers the idea that women will not be successful unless they use their body or are told what to do. In terms of this film as a queer piece of art, I think Lanthimos was unsuccessful in showing the power of female on female sexuality, as despite Bella clearly enjoying her sex with Toinette, it is barely touched upon, and empowerment is not just found in pleasurable sex, despite what Lanthimos shows.
Another thing I would like to mention in 'Poor Things', is the lack of successful representation. I found the two black characters to be very two-dimensional, with Harry being an extreme pessimist, and Toinette being an extreme socialist who is just used for Bella's empowerment, suggesting that women can only have successful sex with other women, which in ways is accurate, but not entirely true. There is also a lack of successful representation of disability within this film, with unnecessary use of the r slur, and the one other disabled character we see, the man with a hook for his hand, his only plot device being that he gets beaten up by Duncan, a straight white man.
However, Mark Ruffalo and Emma Stone do an incredible job of portraying an exaggerated character, which made it much more interesting to witness as a film. As well as this, anyone with any media literacy can make judgement towards the Frankenstein allusions, and I believed them to be pretty successful, especially in the portraying of Wedderburn as Victor Frankenstein, and Godwin as well, God, which twisted the usual narrative of what is may I mention, an amazing book which stands the test of time, written by a woman. :)
My first reaction to this movie by the end, was that "it seemed like a film aimed for women, but made by a man." and it holds true. Bella is a wonderfully eccentric character to watch, however she continues to be infantilised throughout her sexual journey, and the fact she has a newborn brain is not touched upon well enough as a sensitive and difficult issue to navigate in her relationship with Wedderburn and with sex. Furthermore, the movie makes no attempts to make her seem like an adult woman apart from the physical appearance of her body. She has no menstrual cycle, she doesn't get pregnant, she doesn't get an STI and she has minimal body hair, which just further infantilises her, even into her prostitution journey, and is unrealistic. When I first watched this part of the movie, I thought that portrayal of her choice in sex work was successful. It was an empowering way of portraying sex work, however now I have thought about it more I believe that Lanthimos fails to give her any other choice, she is raised around sex and sexual nature, and gets no choice in the matter realistically.
This movie was an unfortunate failure for me, as I was excited. I find Lanthimos style constantly hot or cold, and I often think his narratives and ideas are unique in a way which is perhaps lost on me and many alike. Poor Things was unfortunately, not for me.

His name was Eric Mjöberg and this was not the first time he had taken bones it was also not unusual for his time. It was part of the so called "scientific racism" and eugenics in europe at the time. Thankfully though the bones were returned in 2004!
I'm reblogging this because I've been thinking about making a series of posts relating to the awful things swedes and sweden has done in the past and just sorta gotten away with.
It's a lot, unfortunately
but I would like to do it because I like history and also because I don't like that people don't know these things
but I do think it would be best to have a separate blog for that so if you're interested follow this blog: @swedensshamefulhistory
there was a swedish guy in like the early 1900s that literally just traveled to Australia, attended a funeral of an indigenous person and then HE CAME BACK A FEW WEEKS LATER TO DIG UP THE BONES TO KEEP IN HIS COLLECTION!!!!
DO YOU HEAR ME??!!!
HE WENT ON A FUNERAL AND THEN CAME BACK TO DIG UP THE BONES!!!!!!!
Thankfully the aboriginal people there had heard he had dug up bones previously and they moved the grave.
AND WHEN HE DISCOVERED THIS HE GOT MAD AND SAID THE ABORIGINAL PEOPLE COULDN'T BE TRUSTED
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

i can‘t believe they got the smoking part wrong. this is really irking me…
I hope that was an offhand slip during an interview and not indicative of actual show content😬if James smokes in the show and they don't explain it away as hypocrisy I'll be soooo mad...
A Counterblaste to Tobacco is short and available full text free if anyone is curious and hasn't read it, and if the period English is difficult for you someone wrote a modern spelling version on English Language & Usage Stack Exchange.
Big TW racism but I was amazed at how, in 1604, James complained about peer pressure, correlation/causation, regression to the mean, anecdata, nonsensical claims of curing opposite conditions, etc., as regards trendy health hacks. IN 1604!!
Despite his many bad decisions (and, in Counterblaste in particular, scientifically wrong and racist premises), he really was a smart and savvy guy.

Where do you stand on the r4cs0 issue? I mean, I'm sure you don't care about his rampant homophobia, transphobia, dendrophobia and racism. But you can't really support his attitude toward animals can you? Aside from the constant trolling of vegans, he brags about the fact that he lives in a remote area of Idaho where there is no real law enforcement, so he gets away with hunting endangered grey wolves and decapitating geese. Google it! Look up "Idaho Geese Massacre."
#literally this anon#why are you asking me about someone i've never heard of whose name sounds like a star wars robot#why do you think being mean to vegans matters more than actual racism?#what the hell is dendrophobia#google says it's ''fear of trees''#my brother in christ you listed being mean to trees in the same breath as transphobia n homophobia? for real??#and why would you assume i don't care about those things???#we need a scientific inquest to find out what the hell is in the water these people are drinking#asked and answered#anonymous#tw animal harm#stuff you only see on tumblr

So he was antisemitic at that point, that's what I'm hearing. If someone asks if you believe in a bigotry, and you redefine that word and blame the minority group for certain social problems, that's being bigoted towards that group.
If someone asked a guy "are you racist?" and he said "I don't believe in race there's only the human race, and also black people need to lower the rate of black on black crime and they only accuse you of racism to distract from that" I'd be like okay yeah that guys a racist.
Short history of the term anti-semitic and tw for nazi mention:
"The term anti-Semitism was coined in 1879 by the German agitator Wilhelm Marr to designate the anti-Jewish campaigns underway in central Europe at that time. Nazi anti-Semitism, which culminated in the Holocaust, had a racist dimension in that it targeted Jews because of their supposed biological characteristics"
"This variety of anti-Jewish racism dates only to the emergence of so-called “scientific racism” in the 19th century and is different in nature from earlier anti-Jewish prejudices."
Also taking into account other things Malcom X has said about Jewish people, I do think he was at least a bit anti-semitic at least at that time. "This is because they [Jews] know that they control 90 percent of the businesses in black communities, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. "
He was the national representative of the Nation of Islam, a group that is very anti-semitic (and homophobic) and had been seen by some as organised again.
We don't have to support antisemitism to support the people of Palestine. We shouldn't to dismiss anti-semitism as just reactions to criticism of "the Jews". As a whole the Jews don't do anything except be Jewish. We can't assign actions and intentions to a whole group of people.
And from what I know he became less anti-semetic.
"I totally reject Elijah Muhammad’s racist philosophy, which he has labelled ‘Islam’ only to fool and misuse gullible people as he fooled and misused me. But I blame only myself, and no one else for the fool that I was, and the harm that my evangelical foolishness on his behalf has done to others."
"my dearest friends have come to include all kinds — some Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, agnostics, and even atheists!"
It's important to remember that civil rights groups are not immune to anti-semitism including black empowerment groups. Like Louis Farrakhan who was also part of the NOI and said things like:
“the Satanic Jews that control everything and mostly everybody, if they are your enemy, then you must be somebody.” “The Jews, a small handful, control the movement of this great nation, like a radar controls the movement of a great ship in the waters … the Jews got a stranglehold on the Congress.” And “Osama Bin Laden didn’t destroy the Twin Towers. that was a false flag operation to take the world’s attention away from the great disunity in America after George W. Bush stole the election.” "homosexuality is 'created by Satan and his manipulation of biology and chemistry.'" “Those of you that say that you are Jews, I will not even give you the honor of calling you a Jew. You’re not a Jew. You’re so-called. You’re Satan. And it’s my job now to pull the cover off of Satan.” "[Hitler was] a very great man"
There's a lot to criticise about the treatment of Palestine without supporting views that were created by bigots like this and that are now regretted by the person who said them.
Conflating human rights with hate is just harmful to the efforts of human rights activism.
#human rights#black history#bloody hell#tw antisemitism#malcom x#homophobia#Illinois#In one early instance#Elijah Muhammad invited American Nazi Party boss George Lincoln Rockwell to the NOI’s 1962 Saviours’ Day Convention. Rockwell spoke at the#christening Elijah Muhammad “the Adolf Hitler of the black man.”#that was a quote from the article so that's pretty just in your face#doesn't get much more racist then a nazi standing up and calling you hitler#lets not post stuff about Jewish people from someone who was brainwashed by a hate group that was cosy with nazis#let's maybe not post stuff about Jewish people and focus on palestine-#fine to criticise Israel but maybe lets not go after ethnoreligious minorities in particular

hello mutuals and beloved friends and also the rest of you. I have an announcement.
the hatoful boyfriend series currently costs less than a vaguely complicated order at starbucks on steam and will continue to until november 29th. if you have Any interest in the games at all, Especially if its morbid curiosity or just for the funny, i could not recommend it more.
do you want to play a game where you date talking pigeons? no? great! because here we are! theres actually a lot more to it than that but part of the point of the game is to go into it for The Silly so i'll just say that it is a Lot more than it appears. like, not just "it gets dark and scary" like I personally expected it to get, as you get further on it actually does become a drama and mystery so much better crafted than it had any right to be or had advertised itself as. it's just the perfect storm and I look deranged whenever I talk about it being an actually superbly written game series and hey! if you play it, you too can look deranged!
note: I will say though that hatoful boyfriend is A Lot. like. it has a tw list and it is a lot. you can look up specifics on does the dog die, but the general tw list goes as follows.
(put under a readmore, in case you want to go in blind or don't mind, though just the tws aren't inherently spoilers)
🕊 is for hatoful, 🌠 is for holiday star
- war 🕊
- genocide 🕊
- suicide 🕊 (including coerced suicide 🌠)
- murder(decapitation/dismemberment)🕊
- Arguable Cannibalism 🕊
- guns 🕊🌠
- terminal illness 🕊
- bioweaponry 🕊
- pursuing monster based horror 🕊
- unreality 🕊🌠
- scientific experimentation based horror🕊
- Bird Racism 🕊🌠
- childhood trauma 🕊🌠
- parent death 🕊
- infanticide 🕊🌠
- emotional manipulation 🌠
- unhealthily codependent relationships 🌠

Hello, I know this is very cliché but would you recommend me books like Devil In Winter? Not really much about the trope of convenient marriage but more about their personalities, you know, the Rake and the shy but sometimes stand up to him
Not cliche--classic!
If you're looking for a rake paired off with a kind of "shy but strong" type, I'd recommend:
Indigo by Beverly Jenkins--Galen is a true blue rake, and Hester is a virgin who's kind of quiet but definitely strong. She works within the Underground Railroad, whereas he directly "steals" enslaved people so that they can be free, which leads to them working together. TW: obviously, this is set in pre-Civil War America and both the hero and heroine (but especially the heroine) are subjected to racism quite often.
To Seduce A Sinner by Elizabeth Hoyt--This is a marriage of convenience book. The hero is a dissolute rake (and war veteran with PTSD) who needs an heir, and the heroine offers him marriage because she's always loved him from afar. She's very prim and proper and quiet in the daytime, and a freak in the sheets, which takes him aback. TW: hero was a POW in the American Colonies and underwent some pretty graphically described torture.
How to Steal A Scoundrel's Heart by Vivienne Lorret--The hero is a rake and the heroine is a quiet woman who's fallen on hard time after being ruined. He's into her, so he offers to make her his mistress for four months. Love ensues.
Scandalous Desires by Elizabeth Hoyt--The hero is a pirate king and a rake, and he semi-kidnaps the heroine, a quiet widow who runs the orphanage he left his illegitimate child at. One of my all time favorites, extremely hot and high emotion.
The Wallflower Wager by Tessa Dare--The hero is a total rake, and the heroine is the kind of shy, quirky girl who likes to rescue animals. They're neighbors, and he wants her to find new homes for her animals, and sets out to help her with it. TW: the heroine experienced sexual abuse as a child.
The Serpent Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt--The heroine picks up the hero on the side of the road when he's been left for dead and nurses him back to health. She's the shy virginal type, he's a flashy rake.
One Good Earl Deserves A Lover by Sarah MacLean--The heroine isn't super quiet, but she is very nerdy and scientific. She asks the hero, a famous rake, to educate her on sex before she gets married. He agrees--but he'll only educate her.... verbally.
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing A Rake by Sarah MacLean--Classic, of course. The heroine is a spinster who wants to experience the world. The hero is a total rake who agrees to help her experience it if she helps his little sister come out in society.
The Devil of Downtown by Joanna Shupe--The hero is this rakish crime lord type, whereas the heroine is a kindly, upper class girl who devotes herself to helping people in need.

Minyards' Magical Mischief by moonix
(mature)
“No,” Aaron said. “Andrew, no.”
They locked eyes, and for a moment it was like they were eleven again, catching sight of each other for the first time across a crowded train platform.
“I confess,” Andrew said tonelessly, “to the murder of Drake Spear.”

Bend Before You Break by orkestrations
When Izuku set out for his morning run, the last thing he was expecting was to be plucked from his own world by magic and thrown into another universe entirely.
Removed from his own conflict and with no way back, he sets himself to figuring out this world and its own incipient war while searching for a way to possibly reverse the spell that brought him here.
It's just his luck that the year he arrives is the same year the government decides it's a great idea to bring back the potentially-deadly tournament.

It’s not like he’s surprised a magic school exists— that’s probably only a seven on the scale of “crazy things Tim Drake has seen”. No, Tim’s just surprised he’s enrolled.
Point That Wand at Me and See What Happens by widdlewed
During Harry Potter's fourth year, Hogwarts gained two new additions to its hallways that no one will soon forget. Damian Wayne is feared to be the next Dark Lord rising while Dick Grayson gains a fanbase larger than Professor Lockhart. Between dealing with dreams of Voldemort and the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Harry doesn't have time to deal with alter-ego heroes and the drama they bring with them.
Also, what the fuck is up with the rumors of Professor Grayson's ass?

In Which There's a Teacher at Hogwarts That Doesn't Enable Casual Racism by stellaisnotamermaid
Merlin had been having dreams for a while—nightmares that surrounded his unconscious. He knew they were somehow connected to a prophecy he'd found about the Dark Lord and the Chosen One. He'd wanted to join in to help fight in the war, but the Old Religion held him at bay, forcing him to wait. Then, on July 31st, 1980, everything went silent. It took eleven months, but he was finally able to join in.

Emrys Ascending by tricksterity
In the depths of the Crystal of Neahtid, Merlin sees the resurrection of Lord Voldemort, an event that will tip the balance of the world so far out that only he has the power to intervene and set it right, or stop it from ever happening. For that, he'll have to pose as a student and attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The only problem is, he's been chosen instead of Cedric Diggory as a Triwizard Champion, and there's a recently reborn Arthur Pendragon in Gryffindor House.

"the only good thing about you is your owl," says kim dokja, the owl, after complimenting literally everything about him. by RenderedReversed
The thing about being the Chosen One’s owl is that everyone is after your damn mail.
Or, in which Kim Dokja is Yoo Joonghyuk's post owl, and this ironically does not make their ability to communicate any better.

Of course, the transfer kid gets mentioned because transfers are rare, but the news isn’t that exciting. In fact, according to Laura, no one even seems to know his first name. The only thing anyone has really figured out about him is that he’s American. And that’s not exactly hard because he obviously has an accent.
The only thing Derek really knows is that, despite other reports, he seems quiet enough, prefers to work alone, and has the most amazing shade of amber eyes that Derek has ever seen.
Not that he’s looking. Obviously.
OR: A Harry Potter AU where Stiles is a Slytherin transfer student and Derek is the grumpy Gryffindor who falls in love with him.
There are also potions, elves, and falcons involved. Oh, and illegal use of magic. Obviously.

Entwining Fates by rinsled05
Imagine if Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, after the demise of you-know-who, started accepting foreign students in an effort for greater unity among wizarding communities around the world. Imagine that, in this changing climate of diversity and social acceptance, Hogwarts also decided to host an exchange programme with select students from Durmstrang Institute and Beauxbatons Academy of Magic for a semester.
Imagine, then, if a young Japanese wizard by the name of Yuuri Katsuki had transferred to Hogwarts to escape his past, just in time to meet a Russian Quidditch player who would blow open the very doors he was trying so desperately to close.
A story of love, magic, and teenagers trying to find themselves.

the racism and imperial ambitions of Kew Gardens, plant-collecting expeditions, major scientific institutions of Europe, especially between 1700 and 1900, etc., were merely “covert”? just a little bit “problematic”?
The Natural History Museum is planing to review its collections following fears from museum bosses that they could cause offence. A review has been commissioned in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, which will include an audit of the statues, rooms and individual items which staff members think show "legacies of colonies, slavery and empire".
In documents [...], the executive board told staff the museum would undertake a review into room names, statues and collections [...]. According to the paper, one curator said "science, racism and colonial power were inherently entwined", and that any collections deemed "problematic" could be renamed or even removed. [...]
It is thought the review will look at the Charles Darwin collection, whose trip to the Galapagos Islands on HMS Beagle was cited by a curator as one of Britain's many "colonialist scientific expeditions". The documents said “museums were put in place to legitimise a racist ideology”, and that “covert racism, exists in the gaps between the displays”. However, speaking to The Standard, a spokesperson for The Natural History Museum said: "Recently we started a review to better understand the history of our institution as a historical and contemporary global collection of natural history specimens.”
Headline, photo, tw!tt*r screencap, and text from: Duffield. “Natural History Museum is due to review ...” Evening Standard. 7 September 2020.
----
Stuff:
- Charles Darwin considered Indigenous people of Tierra del Fuego as less intelligent/sentient than domesticated dogs; Carl Linnaeus explicitly and directly plotting colonization and calling Southeast Asian, Latin American Indigenous, and Chinese people “barbaric”, “poor”, etc.
- The tale of breadfruit domestication, the mutiny on the Bounty, and plantation owners plotting with Kew Gardens to take plants from Indigenous Polynesians and domesticate crops to undermine slave gardens in the Caribbean.
– “Ghostly non-places; settler-colonial hallucinations and fantasy visions; monstrous plants and animals; hiding, destroying, re-making ecological worlds; permanent cataclysm; the horror of settlement”: Anna Boswell on settler-colonial agriculture/ecology and the role of scientific institutions in legitimating imperial constructions of “new worlds.”
– Conflating women with “bloodthirsty” and “flesh-eating” plants, and the dehumanization of Indigenous cultures through the scientific illustrations of imperial scientific agents and artistic depictions of plants from colonized ecosystems (Euro-American art/botany, 1700s to early 1900s).
- When naturalists from Kew Gardens tried to import marsupials from Australia in order to naturalize the kangaroo to English ecosystems in an attempt build imperial/nationalist identity and pride by demonstrating how the English countryside is friendly, perfect, superior, welcoming to life, unlike the dangerous tropical landscapes at Empire’s frontier (1790s to 1850s).
- Scientists and land managers of Canadian federal government attempting to expand control over the Arctic/sub-Arctic by purposely killing caribou herds to weaken Indigenous autonomy before importing European reindeer to better control Indigenous foodsheds. (1890s to 1930s.)
- How the gardens, horticulture, and food markets of poor/dispossessed/enslaved in the Caribbean allowed autonomous food networks to exist and undermine plantation owners. (Late 1700s, early 1800s.)
- Grasses, seed merchants, and “the Empire’s dairy farm” in Aotearoa. (European agriculture in late 19th and early 20th centuries.) And: The role of grasslands, deforestation, and English grasses in ecological imperialism in Aotearoa, early 20th century.
- The Scottish-born chief coroner of Adelaide who robbed graves, dissected bodies, and took the skulls of at least 180 Aboriginal people for his home collection. (1900-ish to 1920-ish.)
- Pineapple, breadfruit, and plantations “doing the work of Empire” in Hawaii.
- Mapuche people, Valdivian temperate rainforest, and Chilean/European state plots to colonize Valdivia by dismantling the rainforest to undermine Mapuche autonomy and to create “Swiss or German pastoral farm landscape”.
- Carl Linnaeus and botanists’ racism against India and Latin America, and the use of botanic gardens to acquire knowledge as an exercise of “soft empire.”
- How Atomic Energy Commission and academic ecologists from the US knowingly and purposely used Polynesian/Micronesian people as human test subjects and profited off of nuclear weapons testing in the South Pacific. (Contains many direct quotes from the scientists. Extremely graphic.)
- Dandelions, other non-native plants, and settler gardens changing soil of the Canadian Arctic. (Late 1800s and early 1900s.)
- European botanic gardens in 18th-/19th-century Mexico and Central America as a tool of imperialism and knowledge systematization. (“Botany began as atechnoscope – a way to visualize at-a-distance – but, at the end of the eighteenth century, it was already a teletechnique – a way to act at-a-distance.”)
- Memes for when you see a mention of “Joseph Banks” or “Kew Gardens” in any magazine, academic article, museum exhibit, documentary, or something.
- “Fugitive seeds”: Seed-keeping and plant knowledge among Black communities in the US as an alternative current of thought compared to the scientific racism of 19th century scientific institutions.
- How European botanists experimented under the reign of Leopold in the Belgian Congo before transplanting African oil palm to Southeast Asia to establish the first major oil palm plantations; today, 100 years later, oil palm monoculture ravages Southeast Asia and the same plantation company still owns property across Africa.
- Wild rice, “cottage colonialism” in Canada, imaginative control, the power of names and naming plants. (1780 to present.) And: Kew Gardens plotting to take Native strains of wild rice and domesticate them for cheap and profitable consumption in other imperial British colonies.
- Calcutta Botanic Gardens abduction and use of Chinese slaves; Kew Gardens (successfully) plotting to steal cinchona from people of Bolivia to service their staff in India; botanic gardens’ role in large-scale dispossession to create plantations in Assam and Ooty (1790s - 1870s).
