I DID NOT SEE THIS STORY COMING, FOLKS.

I started reading this thinking it would be totally smutty and kinky and LO AND BEHOLD, the angst assaulted me out of nowhere and I am DEAD.

It has a lot of smut and smutty situations, but it is SO much more than that! This is canon-divergent TVD Season 4, and everything is so well placed and structured. I love the moments when the story dives back into canon, weaving the original content with what happens on the show and creating this whole new web of events and meanings. The alternatives the author came up with are SO IC and fit SO well with the show that it feels perfectly organic.

Now, I know many people can't stand canon-ish stories (which - honestly, WHAT?), but trust me, folks, this one is definitely worth your time! It starts lighthearted and makes you go all OH YEAH COME TO ME SMUT, and before you know it, it is giving you ALL THE FEELS!!! Besides, if anything, there’s a decent amount of smut, so hey.

Let me make a pause to mention that KLAUS IS PERFECT. He is PERFECT. He is KLAUS, period. It's so hard to find such a well written IC Klaus like this. He's trash for Caroline, yes, but he's also still very much the Original hybrid, capable of horrible things, owner of a terrible temper, lashing out at the most inappropriate of times. He manages to be totally charming and alluring and still preserve the aura of danger, which was so great about TVD!Klaus. So, really, great job. 

"I am a monster, Caroline," he says quietly and then after a small, determined breath and without turning to face her, "But I will do right by you."

AND THEN WHAT FOLLOWS IS AMAZING BECAUSE IT'S NOT WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT AT ALL.

This story has a way of subverting expectations that is just *chef's kiss*.

The one big problem here is that it has not been finished and hasn't been updated since 2016. =( My heart gently weeps. But it is still so worth the ride, if you don't mind unfinished fanfiction.

Also, don't want to compare my fic to this, obviously, but it gave me lots of WAHNOLA vibes, especially the final part of the story. The way it marries certain parts of canon to original stuff and how the KC relationship unfolds, outside pressure, Caroline's guilty conscience and how she weights it all. I just wish there had been a finale here! :( So if you, for whatever reason, liked We'll Always Have New Orleans, you're sure to enjoy this one.
