Music of TURN
Round 16
Don't forget round 15
Read 'Em John
1.05: Epiphany
There is a surprising lack of research done on this song. It incorporates a lot of musical traditions found in various African communities that were brought to the Americas in the slave trade. They merged with Western European music to what eventually became work songs, field hollers, shouts, and spirituals.
I've covered a lot of this in my jazz history class, but I am no expert and am just using my existing knowledge to give background an analysis for this song.
Read 'Em John incorporates a lot of this, especially shouts and call and response. I'm going to put in a quote from a proper analysis of the lyrics and story told.
"[John] Refers to John the Revelator, doing what the slave was not allowed to do--reading. But not just reading, but reading with an authority that no one else could match of the doom of his masters and the end of the wicked world they had created and ascent of the persecuted and good into heaven."
https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2013/04/carolina-chocolate-drops-read-em-john.html
It's worked beautifully into the scene when Cicero reads the attainder for Strong Manor that declared all slaves to be free. (not really since the men were instead sent to New York to join the Black Pioneers and Abigail to John Andre to be a house servent. And we have no idea what happened to the other enslaved women shown earlier in the season)

Turpin Hero
1.01: Pilot
This ballad is about the famous English Highwayman, Dick Turpin, (1705 - 1739) whose exploits of theft were romanticised following his execution. The song is believed (or has been claimed) to have been written before his execution.
After accidentally killing fellow highway robber Tom King on accident. Turpin went under the alias John Palmer and fled. He was arrested (as Palmer) about a year later for shooting another man's rooster and then threatening to shoot the man. His identity as Turpin was revealed while imprisoned by his former teacher who recognized his handwriting.
It's very fitting that the song's used as Abe goes to smuggle on the London Trade. An act that eventually brings him to Caleb and eventual formation of the Culper Ring. And just like horse theft (and murder) was punishable by death in the case of Turpin, spying was too for Abe.

there’s also a Funkier version by the same group on youtube, if you don’t discriminate by my arbitrary criteria of Feels Like The 18th Century, because sometimes you just want to set drumset to old folk music
youtube
you ever hear a version of a folk tune that’s so good you want to like, eat it? now you have listen to this absolutely sexy version of turpin hero

Erik Destler x Fem!StageActress!Reader || Would Include...
Tumblr media
Erik Destler always learning your on-stage romantic interests part totally and then 'dispatching' of the poor guy just before he's meant to go on so he then can always taking his place would include...
Warnings: Contemporary musical references, I don't care, shoot me. Also just basic Erik creepiness; murder and not-super-consensual kissing/touches (dub con at most).
Tagging: @marinerainbow and @masqueradeball .
🥀 Erik falling for you almost the moment you entered the Palais Garnier for the first time. He has no chill, we know this. He's like a Disney Princess. One song and he's fallen hopelessly in love.
🥀 Erik always keeping an eye on the cast lists when they come out- checking who you are and if you have a romantic interest. If you do, that person is now his main target. He may not kill them immediately, he'll wait until the final show on the final night, but there is a big red bullseye on their back now.
🥀 Erik practising 'his' lines (The lines of your on-stage romance) in his sewer room, reciting them to a dummy wearing some... familiar clothing. What? No, he didn't sneak into your chambers in the middle of the night and steal them from you! No, no! Absolutely not!... though you are missing a dress exactly like the one the doll is wearing. *cough*
🥀 Erik treating that doll of you with the utmost care. Almost as much as he'd treat you, the real you, with (Or, how he'd like to treat you. Only the lord knows if Erik could actually be gentle if given the chance to hold you). Its really creepy. Imagine his fingertips only grazing the dolls cheek very gently, but his eyes drift downwards (even though, again, its JUST A DOLL- ITS JUST STUFFING, ERIK!- Y O U ' R E T H E O N E W H O S T U F F E D I T- ) with very desire-filled eyes. Imagine him on one knee before the doll, holding its hand in his, its dead-eyes staring off into space while he professes deep speeches about love that are supposed to be romantic but just come out wrong and infatuated off Erik's tongue. Imagine Erik's hand wandering in the middle of a particularly heated scene; completely lost to his imagination.
🥀 Erik n e v e r, ever stealing the part of a villain. Even if that villain gets much more heated, or charged scenes with you then your actual love interest (Duke Monroth, Professor Callahan, Judge Turpin, Scar, etc). He wants to be your hero. Your prince, your true love.
🥀 Erik watching your every show, in his special box 5, studying you with eyes so hot you swear you can feel them on your skin every night. Paying so close attention, so he knows exactly how to compliment you on stage; how to be your perfect stage partner. This is why your scenes in every last show at the Palais Garnier are so impossibly electrifying to the audience- and, to you.
🥀 Erik allowing your casted partner to appear in the first few scenes with you during that last performance on that last night, so you never really know when its going to stop being the one guy and start being Erik- you're on your toes. Waiting the whole performance for the hand you grab onto to be Erik's. (He's waiting for the perfect moment to step in. The moment when you're really, really in character; lost to your art.)
🥀 Erik being the Christian to your Satine during 'El Tango De Roxanne' (His eyes upon your face. His hand upon your hand. His lips caress your skin. It's more than I can stand), 'Crazy Rolling' (See how I leave with every piece of you. Don't underestimate the things I will do), and 'Your Song Reprise' (Look at me... Satine... Why else live, if not for love?) in Moulin Rouge.
🥀 Erik being the Fiyero to your Elphaba during that super fucking charged 'As Long As You're Mine' scene in Wicked. You know? With you both on your knees on the stage surrounded by dramatic mist and you cant keep your hands off eachother?? *cough cough* I mean, with you both on your knees on the stage surrounded by dramatic mist and Fiyero and Elphaba cant keep their hands off eachother??? XD (Kiss me too fiercely, Hold me too tight; I need help believing, You're with me tonight, My wildest dreamings, Could not foresee, Lying beside you, With you wanting me // Every moment, As long as you're mine, I'll wake up my body, And make up for lost time.)
🥀 Erik being the Prince to your Sleeping Beauty, Snow White during the True Love's Kiss Scene. Oh yes, he definitely goes there. Did you doubt it?
🥀 Erik AS THE BEAST IN 'EVERMORE' TO YOUR BELLE IN BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!!!?
🥀 Erik never appearing at the end of the production to bow- he cant. You know that. So he makes his last moments on stage with you last, because honestly- who knows when the next time will be?? Its not like he can come call on you like a normal person... 🙄he's a dramatic freak. He holds your hand a few moments longer then necessary, or a little tighter. He kisses you one more time even though its not scripted.
🥀 Erik leaving you a bouquet of flowers in your dressing room after that last show on that last night. Signed simply, ceaselessly yours.
~
🥀 You tell yourself every time that the show must go on. You tell yourself, that thats why you don't stop it; Don't do anything.
🥀 You are lying to yourself. You cant deny the electricity crackling all over your skin every time you see Erik on stage with you, every time Erik touches you under fake pretences. You've never felt quite the same on stage then when he's there with you; you feel like you're really the characters... and there is nothing on earth like that feeling. No one else can give you this. No one but him.
🥀 You expect it now and anxiously await the moment when your practise partner (Just Erik's understudy. Thats what you're thinking of them now; the men who are actually cast) dematerialises from the stage and its Erik.
🥀 You always leave the flowers from Erik at the grave of the man who died. Its sick, the game (?? habit?? r e l a t i o n s h i p??) you're in, but you cant stop. And you cant apologise, so you can only do this.
🥀 You working extra hard to get lead roles at the Palais Garnier. As soon as one show is over, you have a hunger to do it again. Get another part, get Erik back on that stage with you.
Its like an addiction.

It occurred to me that this picture makes very little sense unless you are familiar with the Broadway production of Sweeney Todd (not the movie).
So look it's here on YouTube. WITH GEORGE HEARN.
Enjoy the Greek chorus telling us how stoked to watch Toga Sweeney kill corrupt, immoral, public figures, this is RIGHTEOUSNESS. (Unfortunately 'City on Fire' isn't in the playlist, listen to the OST)
Tumblr media
“Swing your razor wide, Toga, see how well it flits - as it floats across the throats of hypocrites.”
I just think the ending could have done some things a little different.

Heroes & Villains The DC Animated Universe - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Dan Turpin
Inspector Dan ‘Terrible’ Turpin was a dogged and fearless member of the Metropolis Police Department's Special Crimes Unit.  Partnered with the department’s leader, Maggie Sawyer, Turpin investigated major crimes, including those involving super villains.  He earned the nickname ‘Terrible’ due to his brusque manners and stubborn approach to law enforcement.  While Captain Sawyer was very appreciative of the help Superman provided the SCU, Turpin was a bit resentful of him.  He felt that Superman’s flashy antics upstaged the hard work of the department and his fellow officers.
Turpin was particularly focused on taking down Intergang and putting the syndicate’s leader, Bruno Mannheim, behind bars.  After Mannheim had obtained advanced weaponry from the alien world of Apokolips, Turpin and Superman ended up working together so to bring the gangster down.  Afterward, Superman made a point of letting the press know that it was Turpin who had saved his life and not the other way around.
When Darkseid’s forces invaded Metropolis, Turpin led his officers in fending off the invaders.  The invasion halted when the forces of New Genesis arrived and stated that earth was under their protection. Unprepared for a war with New Genesis, Darkseid had his army retreat.  Victorious, Turpin flung insults at the villain.  In a parting gesture of spite, Darkseid used his Omega Beams to incinerate Turpin.
Turpin had died a hero and his funeral was attended by all the luminaries of Metropolis. Turpin’s physical appearance was based on comic book legend, Jack Kirby, who had passed away around the time the episode was written and produced.  Turpin’s funeral was a memorial homage to Kirby and included a number of his friends, family and creations among the attendees.
Actor Joseph Bologna provided the voice for Dan Turpin with the hero first appearing in the twelfth episode of the first season of Superman: The Animated Series, Tools of The Trade.’
Happy Birthday to The King!

The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin on Apple only exists because of Our Flag Means Death. Very loosely based on anti-colonial criminal folk heroes of the 1700s, filled with anachronisms, gay innuendos, gender-fluid characters, craft-time, a foppish newbie exaggerating his first kill, found family…sounds familiar.
That’s not a criticism at all, but like…yeah…just makes me miss OFMD even more.

All this chatter about folk heroes has reminded me how annoyed I am when someone mentions dick turpin and means Claude DuVall
Turpin : known for being speedy. Shot people.
Du Vall / Duval / du Val (spelling varies) : known for being extremely stylish. Recognised within his own lifetime for being a dashing ladies' man. May have danced with a woman while her husband played the violin instead of stealing her jewellery. Memorial inscription focuses on how much of a slut he was

Oh my GOD
i might have found the most dedicated (brainrotted) good omens fan.
Hey y'all my beloved maggots, so in the spirit of having too much time and still recovering from my illness, your beloved Mascot was lurking on the lovely world wide web. I ended up, as one does, looking up what the fictitious '1810 clerkenwell diamond robbery' might have alluded to.
Of course I ended up with a bunch of tumblr and/or good omens results and then one bloody other search result. Which is what I'm sitting in utter bewilderment thinking about.
I'll link it at the end of the post, but to brief you on it, it was an article with an impressively detailed description of the supposed 1810 robbery, with the mastermind being (rather than Jane Austen, which is what I'd have expected the fake story to have) Richard Turpin. I didn't know who the fuck this was, so I looked him up, and found he was a highwayman who was executed in 1739 (there was a wee bit of bodysnatchin' involved, too). One of the diamonds in this article/story was also called the Star of South Africa, which when I looked it up, apparently is a diamond that was not discovered till the second half of the 19th century.
Which is all good lovely article impressive gonchposting but then I glance through the rest of the website and it seems to have actual articles about crime? I know nothing about stuff that happened after the Roman empire, so you are free to tell me about the legitimacy of the articles, but the fact remains that there are many articles, dating from July 2023 to February 2024.
I hear Good Omens season 2 came out on 28th July 2023, so this person set up an entire site in a few days, wrote an article with an anachronistic highwayman and diamond, and then proceeded to actually fill the rest of the site with articles? Am I in the correct timeline here? Has the internet lost its hivemind?
Please can someone explain this to me? Is this the final stage of the brainrot? Is this what I'm doomed to experience? Because if so I'm suing the entire Good Omens fandom, yes, you all, for infecting me with it.
Or have I lost it and I hallucinated this entire internet experience?

It ended in an instant, with two blades being swung at impossible speeds.
Tumblr media
A swift clash of blades.
Both sides dropped to one knee, breathing heavily. They had both landed hefty blows on one another, though it seemed like AVENGER's was far more precise. That didn't discount the damage that he himself took, however.
There was a moment of silence, before you felt it… rage. Rage, emanating from AVENGER's pain.
You'd felt this before- though it was even more distant now, anger stewing and bubbling to the surface, mana moments from going wild.
Rage- a moment of pure anger and animalistic retaliation, as a massive clawed hand whipped towards the neck of the Archbishop, moments away from decapitation.
A blade blocked the strike at the last minute, steel stopping raging flames from ripping at the defeated warrior's neck. There was a moment of silence between the RIDER and the AVENGER as the former had jumped into action, locked eyes filled with deadly tension as neither moved.
Tumblr media
GREY MESSENGER: "…"
Tumblr media
CONSTANTINE: "…"
AVENGER pulled his hand back slowly, as CONSTANTINE turned his head to look back at SABER, eyes narrowed as he sheathed his blade. Approaching the Servants, and gently pulling CONSTANTINE away, KUKULKAN looked between the participants.
Tumblr media
KUKULKAN: "The fight's over. All of you. Avenger won, yes?"
Tumblr media
CAROLUS-TURPIN: "It… certainly feels like it. I concede. I'm already trying to fight non-lethally, going any further would turn this into a deathmatch."
Tumblr media
KUKULKAN: "See? All's well that ends well! You won! Congratulations! Yaaay, Avenger!"
Tumblr media
GREY MESSENGER: "Hmph. Save me the congratulations. The Saber still breathes due to your interference."
Tumblr media
KUKULKAN: "Solo aguanta... Tus Maestros aman a Avenger, así que sé amable…"
Tumblr media
KUKULKAN: "So, moving on! What's next?"
Tumblr media
CONSTANTINE: "Avenger won, so by Saber's own terms, he owes us two honest answers."
Tumblr media
The White Attack Program buzzed, nearly stepping forward in anger before BRYNHILDR pushed the blade of her spear to the Program's neck, keeping it still. Pushing himself up to his feet, the Archbishop could only shrug with a wry smile.
Tumblr media
CAROLUS-TURPIN: "What did you expect me to do? I set the rules and I lost. It's a shame, but I hope His Majesty can forgive me for my poor performance this time- I learned some things about our friend Avenger, after all."
Despite being injured and losing, he didn't seem very... defeated. These paladins seemed to be difficult heroes to shake.
Tumblr media
CAROLUS-TURPIN: "Very well. I'm a man of my word. Ask away, and then we'll get out of your hair."
Tumblr media
KUKULKAN: "Look at that, congratulations! That means we get two questions for Sir Saber, right? Maybe to keep it organized, if you propose a question, it only counts on a majority rule, right?"

Hello sweet, how are you? This is a random topic, but what songs remind you of the characters Alan played? I was having insomnia last night and this question popped into my head so I decided to ask :')
Particularly so far, Tom Jobim's "Falando De Amor" reminds me of Sinclair, ABBA's "Money, Money, Money" reminds me of Lionel, Jeanette's "Soy Rebelde" reminds me of Severus and "Sleepwalker" reminds me of Turpin (in my defense about the latter has an edit of his with this song that rented an apartment in my head for a good few months)
Ps: another question, do you mind nicknames like: honey, sweet, darling, dear? I'm so used to calling people like that that I end up forgetting to ask if it bothers them, anyway if it bothers you please don't hesitate to say it, okay?
Hey there! This is an interesting question, here are some songs that I think suit Alan's characters:
Severus Snape
- "Mad World" by Gary Jules - Reflects Snape’s complex, tragic nature.
- "Hurt" by Johnny Cash - Captures his deep-seated pain and remorse.
Hans Gruber (Die Hard)
- "Sympathy for the Devil" by The Rolling Stones - Embodies his suave, villainous charm.
- "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson - Suits his cunning and sophisticated demeanor.
Alexander Dane / Dr. Lazarus (Galaxy Quest)
- "Space Oddity" by David Bowie - Reflects his struggle with typecasting and space adventures.
- "Heroes" by David Bowie - Emphasizes his eventual heroism.
Judge Turpin (Sweeney Todd)
- "Paint It Black" by The Rolling Stones - Matches his dark and oppressive nature.
- "The Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel - Highlights his brooding, sinister presence.
Metatron (Dogma)
- "Somebody to Love" by Queen - Echoes his celestial frustration and quest for understanding.
- "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode - Fits his role as the voice of God.

I don’t know if That Moment wasn’t any better but it definitely had “spider-man 2 train scene” energy. Which was something that the 90s animated series didn’t really do (or… any of the 90s hero shows, really. The people helping the heroes is a surprisingly rare thing despite how much it feels like it shouldn’t be)
Like, That Moment really felt like a “this is the impact that heroes have on the cities they help, and is why they do what they do”
Which isn’t something the 90s animated series needed to focus on
See, I kinda disagree with that last part, both in that I feel that every show needs to focus on that at some point (*points to the Footloose episode of Avatar*), and in the fact that it did focus on it, which is why I keep coming back to Dan Turpin's death: because that scene is when Metropolis closes ranks, when they stand up for Superman...and when the defiance is met with superpowered reciprocation.
That moment, though, is a dark one. It's bitter and horrific. Last night's moment was heroic and inspiring--like you said, Spider-Man energy (I would argue it's more the bridge scene from the first movie than the train scene in the second one, but they're both channeling the same energy).
But overall, yes, that was the sense of wonder I got from the scene: here's the people Superman is here to protect, but they're all protecting Superman. It also uses the main characters' talents to their full potential: Jimmy's superpower (his social media presence) chains to Lois's superpower (her eloquence and passion), and they endow the entire population of Metropolis with the knowledge that they can save the day. And they do.

Having just voted on all the Bracket A matchups, here's my thoughts:
Amber Gray fucking kills it in "Charming," and I was not expecting that jazzy but it works very well. I also like that she's mispronouncing "charmante" the whole time.
"Don't Make Me Laugh" is...fine, but I give the win to "Coraline" because it's so charming the first time you hear it, and then you realize how dark it is when you see under the surface--just like the rest of the Other World. He's basically telling her "we are spying on you through that creepy-ass doll and we're going to sew buttons on your eyes."
"The Rake's Song" is a bop, but "Little Girls" is so pathetic and spiteful that it scratches a weird kind of itch for me. You feel sorry for her even though she's singing about wringing children's necks.
I voted for "Get in the Water" eventually, but both of those are very good, so IDK.
"No One Remembers Achmed" is very silly, but it's a fitting kind of silly for a silly antagonist who gets dubbed "TIGERFUCKER" by his own guards. It's also ironically very catchy. "We Don't Talk About Bruno" just...doesn't really feel like a villain song to me with the knowledge that Bruno isn't a villain.
"Imperial March" is fucking iconic, I had to.
"Senkin Daur Bláo" sounds more interesting, I guess? "Herbert Style" just seemed like a generic techno song.
"Megalovania" is such a bop of a villain song it's its own genre. Also Jack Black seems like he's trying too hard, which results in him sounding like he's singing "bitches" at the end, which is hilarious. I know he can sing really well, but this song just doesn't really work.
"I'm The Music Meister" has Neil Patrick Harris flexing by making villains and heroes be his backup dancers. Fuck yes.
"How Can I Refuse" was better than I expected, but the janky CGI and boring setting put it a step behind "Toxic Love" and the dulcet crooning of Tim Curry.
I honestly couldn't make out like half of what Sweeney and Judge Turpin were singing in "Pretty Women," and also I kind of wanted to vote against Johnny Depp on principle.
"Come Wayward Souls" is actually sung by The Beast's VA, Samuel Ramey, Grammy-winning bass-baritone opera singer; and BOY can you tell. It's kind of like "Coraline" in that it sounds innocent at first, and then you realize "oh, this song is him telling children to succumb to despair and commit suicide in the woods so he can burn their souls for fuel. Oh, that's fucked up."
"Jaws theme" is very intimidating, even if it's not as sexy.
"It's Gonna Get Weird" is perfect for Bill Cipher's playful malice, and honestly, if I didn't know "The Edge of Dawn" was a villain song, I would never have guessed. I suppose there's a case to be made for "villain thinks they're a hero so they have a heroic-sounding song," but in that case, you gotta give me some edge!
"Poor Unfortunate Souls" is a classic, but again, "Shiny" is also very good. Kind of a personal preference one.
"Empire" is...uh...not as cool as I think it thinks it is. Again, the animation really hurts this one.
I honestly really enjoy hearing people's thoughts on the songs
