servo motor speed turnstiles gates also called access wing turnstiles gates, which comes from the access control system, is one of the important parts of contemporary entryway and exit control. The door wings are driven by the control system and open and close automatically. The operating mode can be selected through shows settings: As quickly as it is validated that the person entering is authorized, the door wings open instantly. It closes after a hold-up, and the delay time is adjustable. Common dc brushless speedlane turnstile doors are divided into scissor doors (metro flap turnstile gates) and swing doors. (1) Scissor doors are often used in rail transit, and typical scissor doors are mostly utilized in subways and other locations. The door wings extend from the inside of the box, which can efficiently seal the passage and play the function of access control. In addition, an infrared sensing gadget is installed inside the door body, which can recognize the function of "one person, one card" for individuals to pass through. (2) The swing door appeared later than the scissor door and comes from the second generation servo motor speed gates gate. Such dc brushless speedlane The attribute of turnstiles gates is that the door wings run in the front and back direction. The operation process is within the human body's view, which is much safer. In addition, since the door wings do not need to be retracted into package, The designs of swing doors are more varied. Due to the above qualities, swing doors are typically used in banks, corporate buildings, high-end office buildings, etc. Anti-trailing function: There is an overall infrared light band detection location in the channel. The switch state can be adjusted by software application according to the customer's accuracy requirements. The application of the light band to adapt to various requirements prevents the drawbacks of point-type infrared detectors that are easily polluted and affects the dependability of judgment, and can effectively judge the future. Tag reader who reads the card. When the system figures out that tailgating has actually happened, the system will respond based on the area of the legitimate cardholder returned by the infrared detector. After the door opening signal is sent, there are still some unusual uses that will activate an alarm.

Swing Barrier Turnstile is typically called a slap door in the rail transit industry. Its barrier body (gate pendulum) is in the type of an aircraft with a particular location, perpendicular to the ground, and swings through rotation Implement blocking and release. The materials of the blocking body are frequently stainless-steel, organic glass, and tempered glass. Some also use metal plates covered with special flexible materials (to lower the damage brought on by striking pedestrians). Bridge Smart Swing Gate Gate The more popular name has been inherited from the original bridge-shaped structure. It includes a main chassis and two movable swing bars. The swing bars can swing 180 ° or 90 ° to accomplish the function of preventing or releasing. Column Swing Door Turnstile The appearance of the main equipment remains in the kind of a column, which can perform the very same functions as the bridge type Swing Gate Gate. It is identified by lower cost and less area. RS Security Co., Ltd Main Products: tripod turnstile gate, flap gate, complete height gate, swing gate, hydraulic bollard, roadway blocker, gain access to control, face acknowledgment, barrier gate and so on. Application of Swing Door Turnstile It is primarily used for passage entrance and exit management. Normally, only people are permitted to pass through, or people dragging baggage, and disabled people. Thinking about that Swing Door Turnstile can achieve larger channel qualities than wing gates. A lot of Swing Barrier Turnstile passages can be mixed with pedestrians, bikes, mopeds, handicapped cars and other non-motorized vehicles. element Swing Gate structural structure: Swing Turnstile includes chassis, movement, swing arm, control system, infrared sensor, It includes control devices and other parts. High-end brake Swing Turnstile consists of: chassis, brake motion, control system, infrared sensor, control equipment and other parts (high-end brake Swing Gate is that it can stop rapidly and efficiently, there is no shaking, no mechanical stuck structure, and the swing arm automatically opens after power failure. It fully abides by fire defense requirements).

Please join us for our next Open Houses! March 20-21, 2024 10am-4pm.
The NYC subway map that never was. Or at least it was never implemented.
The NYC Subway graphics are some of the most requested artifacts from the Vignelli archives. We acquired this unique “verbal map” aka “The Directory” aka the “How to get there” map in 2022. Our archivist put it on display for the first time in 50 years at our Open Houses in September 2022!
“The Verbal Map described how to reach a destination, which train to get, where to change, and when to get out.” – Massimo Vignelli [comment on Michael Bierut’s essay “Mr. Vignelli Map” for Design Observer]
Printed on very glossy paper in full color, this map is large like the station size maps. Printed in two parts [top and bottom] each half measuring 29.5” x 47.5”.
In the Graphic Standards Manual on Page 3 “Diagram of Basic Sign Distribution” it describes the various maps to be installed:
Maps: System maps (implemented, the famous one),
neighborhood map (not implemented),
‘How to get there’ map (not implemented but we have the prototype!)
From the Graphics Standards Manual on page 75, “The Directory”:
“The directory is designed to help a passenger find his “Destination” and “How to get there” quickly and easily. Each station will have its own directory listing all other station alphabetically and numerically. Each station will be followed by the color disc designating he trains that stop there. If there is no direct train, transfer information will follow the station name. This directory will be placed at all important points in the subways station both inside and outside the turnstiles.”
We also have the Dekalb Av Signage Study “analyzed and completed by Joan Charysyn and Virginia Macintosh” for Unimark International in 1971 which shows a mockup of the various maps and states “A directory and three maps will eventually be in use in all subway stations.”
Be sure to join us for our next Open Houses and see what other surprises you can discover! Learn more opn our events page: https://www.rit.edu/events/vignelli-center-spring-open-house

can i just... vent a bit. recently, maybe over the last couple years, i have been bumping into more and more things that are minor inconveniences to me at best but make me so mad on behalf of others.
all local university buildings are now only accessible with a student or employee id. i have one so i don't care beyond being slightly slowed down coming and going but those used to be public buildings, with cool unique stuff on display in the hallways and beautiful old architecture, largely empty at some times of day/week, and now you can only come in if you have an appointment or there's a special event. they're justifying it as a security measure because of a school shooting last year but the process of installing turnstiles was underway before that.
a big library building made all disabled bathroom stalls only accessible to eurokey holders. not everyone who needs to use those stalls has or can get one. this also greatly reduced the number of available stalls during peak times, and locked away the paper towel dispensers, so everyone is now queuing for a single hand-dryer per floor. great job guys, everyone loses. they're justifying it by people frequently vandalizing the bathrooms, which is fucking bullshit.
at the same library i was woken up from a quick powernap by security, because i was curled up on a comfy couch, and apparently you're only allowed to sleep in the library if you're sitting at a table. i was about to wake up and get back to typing anyway and didn't care outside of it being a bit embarrassing but we can all see this is just an attempt to get rid of people without shelter right
a nearby train station was under renovation recently and i was presently surprised that the public bathrooms were a lot more easily accessible and free of charge. but then they officially opened and turns out it was just free because it would be a hassle to charge money while they were renovating, and the fee went up. the bus station/mall across the street from there went from free bathrooms to free on a different floor but paid close to the bus terminals, to all paid, in maybe 10 years. they also don't have an actual way to get large luggage past the turnstiles at this bus station(!), so you better have someone watch it for you i guess. i don't really have an effective way to complain about all this because i don't live in the town, just pass through often enough.
so many free amenities and services were taken away during covid lockdowns and, predictably, never came back or got paywalled. fucking malls have paid public bathrooms now, and replaced sitting areas with kiosks. some of the more high-end malls outside the city center still have them but will ask you to get lost if an employee thinks you look like you won't be spending money there.
for the past two years many public buildings, like train stations and libraries, as well as privately owned malls, have been swarming with goons in security vests walking around trying to look tough. big coincidence this started when the first wave of ukrainian refugees got here, i'm sure. if you ask why there's a need to have four wannabe cops in a regional train station when there wasn't just a few years ago they'll just say it's a security measure and get mad at you.

"I believe in everything," Jay replied firmly.
Tumblr media
"Do you believe in everything? Do you even believe that the tundras of Mars are haunted by Vetala possessing the bodies of early Mars pioneers?" Sugafana asked.
"Well, I've never been there, but it's a big universe. Anything is possible," Jay replied as they reached the top of the hill, revealing the city.
MangalRajyapura, the capital city of Mangalrajya, glowed before them. Spiraling towers in the shape of human hands, created using Martian jasper and solid gold, waved towards the sky. Tiny machine-like droids buzzed around the fingertips like drunken butterflies. And below it all lay the paper-card slum towns for the humans who remained.
"I haven't been back since the purge," Jay remarked, and Sugafana briefly glanced at him.
"I thought you grew up in a village?" Sugafana asked.
"I did, a cloud village," Jay remarked, gesturing upwards at the sky.
"Oh," Sugafana replied flatly.
During the second year of the war, the cloud villages unified to block off the sun, cutting off appliances from solar-powered batteries. A legion of dehumidifiers attacked, sucking up all the clouds' vapor. Thousands perished as they rained from the sky. It was known as the Day of Red Rain. The cloud villages were destroyed by a militia of smart dehumidifiers that sucked up the clouds within seconds.
"Is that why you make me do all the ice deliveries?" Sugafana asked as Jay began to run his hand over the baby's head.
"It's hard to appreciate the imperial gardens when you once saw the trees covered in blood," Jay replied.
"Most of the imperial gardens have been converted into kinetic movement pads. The government insisted when it started to look like the volcanic winter would last another decade," Sugafana explained to Jay.
"Do you ever wonder what the world would be like if Mount Olympus had never erupted?" Jay suddenly asked.
"Yes, most likely the sun never would have been blocked, and there would have been enough sunlight for all the plants and power batteries. It would have been a lovely fairytale where nobody is forced to spend hours walking to generate electricity for homicidal hairdryers," Sugafana said.
"Wow, you really did think it through," Jay remarked.
"I taught speculative interdimensional history. There's probably at least a thousand universes where none of this ever happened," Sugafana said as they slowed down, approaching a checkpoint just in front of the city gates.
"That would be depressing. I would miss talking to you every day," Jay replied.
"You wouldn't even know me, you wouldn't miss me at all," Sugafana pointed out as they pulled to a stop.
It was Tuesday, and on Tuesdays, Sugafana always made sure to approach turnstile number four.
"Afternoon, Radiantguard," Sugafana said to a white hard-shell mask glowing a faint red color.
"Good afternoon, human Sugafana! Are you here to make ice deliveries?" Radiantguard chirped, floating towards the pod's windows.
"As far as Sugafana could tell, Radiantguard had been built as an artificially intelligent UV light face cleaning mask. 'Not today; this is my baby, I need to bring her in for a check-up and to get kinetic pads installed in her feet,' Sugafana lied, gesturing towards Jay.
"And is this your family unit partner?" Radiantguard chirped.
"Yes," Sugafana lied swiftly.
"Anything to declare for customs?"
"Nope," Sugafana said, this time telling the truth.
"Very good! Please turn on your kinetic feet implants and enjoy the city," Radiantguard giggled before floating off.
"That was surprisingly easy! I heard the appliances vaporized refugee humans at checkpoints," Jay whispered to Sugafana as they drove through the tunnel heading into the outskirts of the city.
"Oh, they do! But they're so desperate for walkers they'll let anyone in that looks mostly harmless," Sugafana explained as the tunnel vanished, and the vehicle suddenly stopped with a faint groaning sound.
"Is that supposed to happen?" Jay asked.
"Yep, the appliances want everyone to walk everywhere! It's why they burn down the teleportation hub whenever they catch humans using it," Sugafana explained as she opened the pod's door and climbed out.
"Luckdown trash and treasure markets," Jay said, reading a filthy sign hanging from a half-bent streetlight. The road before them was a depressing smidge of crowded cracked grey concrete, surrounded by black, partially destroyed buildings. Next to the rubble, people worked at makeshift market stands, selling small containers of creation sand, bits of old junk, and piles of rags. Around them, shoppers moved in a bustling, drab pattern, talking amongst themselves. No one was standing still; people eating snacks purchased from a vendor were walking around in circles. The ladies gossiping next to an empty fountain were also shuffling their feet in a funny dance. Even the vendors shifted from side to side, their feet pounding on the pavement.
Sugafana walked to the back of the pod, and with a hiss, it opened, revealing four bags of snow cubes.
"I thought we weren't making deliveries," Jay asked, balancing the baby against his chest.
"This is strictly bribery ice. Now let's get walking! We're heading to the end of the market," Sugafana informed Jay as she picked up a bag of snow cubes and slung it over their shoulder.
There was a sudden whistling sound.
"Move your feet," Sugafana hissed at Jay as a flying electric toothbrush suddenly appeared from behind one of the market stalls. One of the vendors had stopped shuffling for a moment, an older man trying to sell bruised kiwi fruit.
"Third movement violation," the toothbrush chimed.
There was no time for protests, no screaming, no shouting. There was a blinding flash, and the vendor was gone.
"Haree Ram!" Jay shrieked.
"I said keep walking," Sugafana merely replied, pushing him forward.
No one protested, no one whispered. It was as if the vendor had never existed at all.
By the time they reached the end of the tiny grim alley, stepping out into a blinding clean plaza, appliances were zooming about a massive fountain in the shape of a hairdresser. The air was filled with the chirping drone of washing machines and music players gossiping to each other in their hidden language of beeps and whistles. Glass-fronted shops opened up into the street, selling inhuman things such as "designer surface decals," "premium color spray paint," and gold wheel rims. Above it all, there was a racing track surrounded by glass, where fit muscular humans in jumpsuits ran around in infinite circles.
"Marathon runners, they move so much the appliances pay them," Sugafana explained.

Mutt 2023
Fena, a young trans guy bustling through life in New York City, is afflicted with an incessantly challenging day that resurrects ghosts from his past. Laundromats, subway turnstiles, and airport transfers are the hectic background to this emotional drama that overlaps past, present, and future. Settling the disharmony of transitional upheaval in relationships familial, romantic, and platonic is Fena2s task at hand, and his resulting juggling act is equal parts skillful, fumbling, and honest. In negotiating his obliqueness, the poignant moments he finds between himself and others as the distance between them closes are warm, true, and touching
Q&A with MUTT Filmmaker Vuk Lungulov-Klotz and Stars Lío Mehiel, Cole Doman & MiMi Ryder
Chilean and Serbian immigrants, he was raised between Chile, the US, and Serbia. As a transgender storyteller, he hopes to expand queer narratives. His work focuses on intimate moments we often miss if we're not looking. Mutt is his debut feature film. With his feature film script, MUTT, he is an alum of the Sundance Institute Labs, the Inside Out Financing Forum, and was a top five finalist for the Tribeca / AT&T Untold Stories Grant. His award winning trans-themed short film, "Still Liam," played at festivals internationally and earned the attention of celebrated queer filmmakers Ira Sachs and Silas Howard, who have both become mentors. Vuk is also an alum of the Ryan Murphy HALF Initiative Program, where he completed a mentorship under director Janet Mock on the FX series POSE. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Lío Mehiel is a Puerto Rican and Greek artist, actor, and filmmaker. Their work spans film, television, multimedia installation, theater, and events. They are fascinated by the inherent contradiction of the trans experience — one deeply rooted in the body while also transcending beyond the body. Lío began their career as a professional salsa dancer and child actor on Broadway. They can now be seen on shows like WeCrashed (Apple+) and Tales of the City (Netflix). MUTT is their feature film debut. As a filmmaker, Lío produced Chaperone, a queer short film which premiered at Sundance 2022. They wrote, directed, produced, and starred in Disforia, a short film which premiered at Outfest Film Festival in 2018. They are now stuck inside of a psychomagic act with this story as they write the feature script version and confront their own medical transition. As an installation artist, their immersive piece Arcade Amerikana was included in the list of 10 Best Immersive Shows in NYC by Time Out and GOTHAMIST. Lío is currently the producer and creative director of Angels, a developing collection of stone sculptures of transgender humans. The works were first featured as part of a pop-up installation at Outfest LA in 2022, and will be debuted in full at SIZED Gallery LA in 2023. Lío is a co-founder of Voyeur Productions with Russell Kahn and Dulcinee DeGuere. They attended Northwestern University, and are an alumni of the Emerge NYC residency program for artists and activists. Photo credit: Jordan Rossi

  💥💥 NEW CHAPTER UP ON AO3 💥💥
in this installment: → Billy, ready to get his V-card* punched, hesitates in the turnstile → DJ Pete cock-blocked my his own personal militia
Tumblr media
A Conjectural Technologies backstory story (circa '95-'96ish) 💥 with illustrations (sometimes) 💥
📼 Billy has a crush on the mean grrrl who works the video store. 📻 Pete disapproves and finds himself ever-popular with a whole new fan base
youtube
↑ the title "Fist City" is as baffling as it is bad-ass
*I'm visualizing the V-card as like a bus pass or subway metrocard. Poor Billy doesn't know whether to get on the bus or not and the conductor is just rolling his eyes. "Stick it in or get out of the way, kid."
Boys don't get their "cherry popped" so I'm short of virginity metaphors. 🍒
__
This story is crazy long— 52,000 words and will be longer than Boy Genius by the end. I thought I'd have wrapped it up by chapter 12 but I got a B-plot to work out.
Looking at the AO3 archive, there are several other multi-chapter 30,000+ word fan epics for Pete and Billy (about them being a couple, which is not my personal jam). Almost all of them are very literate, deeply emotionally fraught and peppered with well-chosen pop-culture references.
Unlike other VBros character fanfic I've seen which gets to the man-fucking ASAP, this micro niche is light on the dirty business but serves buckets of emotional probing about guilt, self-loathing and sexual identity.
It's this strange pocket in Venture Bros fandom— are people who like Pete and Billy just very into therapy or just very, very wordy?

So, I was thinking about Tenet again and just how awesome the minor details are in that film., though there were always a few things that bothered me and that was things like the bullet holes in the window within the turnstile at the airport or the bullet hole in the opera house that all get undone because they were made with inverted bullets.
There’s also the turnstiles themselves and how they were made, like, I know the information came from the future, but how did it get picked up and interpreted by people in the present, wouldn’t that information be inverted so when did it get uninverted.
First, the bullet holes and other similar stuff that happens in the film like the car side view mirror that gets unbroken when Sator’s car hits it. These breaks that happen begin in the future and continue into the past, but if that’s so, that would imply that these breaks existed when these objects were installed or created, which doesn’t make much sense, but that was because I kept thinking of it from a past to future perspective, what if I looked at these things in the opposite direction. So take the bullet in the opera house, it was made in the future when fired by a version of Neil, and the damage caused is now going into the past, you’d think someone would clean it up, but they couldn’t be able to because the debris exists in the future, so how does it work? Well, the damage just repairs itself over time but backwards, so from a forward perspective it would look like a bullet hole is actually forming in the opera house woodwork and then be instantly repaired when Neil fires the gun undoing the damage. Same with the bullets holes in the glass window, while they were made in the future, from a past to future perspective, the window would look normal and then over time start to develop these bullet like holes, losing pieces of itself before being restored to normal. It does seem a bit weird, for sure, but there isn’t any other explanation that really explains how these things come to be from a past to future perspective.
Though it was this thinking that explained my other point, how did the information from the future become uninverted in the past. Easy, it didn’t.
Think about the perspective, the bullet hole made in the opera house, that bullet was fired in the future so it becomes lodged in the wood and goes into the past. That means when the wood work repairs itself, that bullet is now just inside the wood. How did it go unnoticed, well because it just so happens to be inside a piece of wood that gets carved up in such a way that it will become part of the opera house in the future, then over time, it will start to fall apart and in such a way that resembles a bullet hole, this is probably due to the interaction between normal matter and inverted matter?
Anyway, onto the whole information thing, we know Sator became the man he is because he happened to find a document in the rubble of a location he was cleaning up that told him everything he would need to know to do what he’s done, information that came from the future. I had always assumed that that document had been univerted for it to be found, but thinking about that bullet in the wood and how it must have kept going into the past and become part of a tree once upon a time, it made me look at that document from the other direction and this is when this moment blew my mind.
From Sator’s perspective, he’s finding the document for the first time. From the document’s perspective, it’s actually being buried by Sator to continue it’s trip into the past. It’s journey with Sator from a past to future perspective would ultimately end with that document entering a turnstile at some point in the far future, syncing up with original document that was made in the future and being sent into the past. Once they pass into the turnstile, they would cease to exist from a past to future perspective, much like what happens to Sator and the Protagonist and crew after/before the car chase sequences, which is the same car chase but shown from two perspectives.
It’s such a brilliantly crafted film that every time I come back to it, I find something new to freak out over, and it isn’t because it’s an amazing film, which I think it is, but it’s mainly to do with the fact I just love time travel concepts so much and this did something very different, though not unique as I know a few other things have done something similar to this concept.

dc brushless slim turnstile barrier also called gain access to wing barriers gates, which comes from the access control system, is among the important parts of modern entryway and exit control. The door wings are driven by the control system and open and close immediately. The operating mode can be selected through programs settings: As soon as it is confirmed that the individual entering is licensed, the door wings open immediately. It closes after a delay, and the hold-up time is adjustable. Typical dc brushless speedlane turnstile doors are divided into scissor doors (city flap barriers door) and swing doors. (1) Scissor doors are often utilized in rail transit, and common scissor doors are primarily used in trains and other locations. The door wings extend from the within the box, which can effectively seal the passage and play the role of access control. In addition, an infrared noticing gadget is set up inside the door body, which can recognize the purpose of "one person, one card" for people to pass through. (2) The swing door appeared later than the scissor door and comes from the second generation dc brushless speed turnstile barriers. Such dc brushless glass The characteristic of gates barrier is that the door wings run in the front and back instructions. The operation procedure is within the body's view, which is more secure. In addition, because the door wings do not need to be pulled back into the box, The designs of swing doors are more different. Due to the above characteristics, swing doors are typically utilized in banks, corporate buildings, high-end office complex, and so on. Anti-trailing function: There is an overall infrared light band detection location in the channel. The switch state can be adjusted by software according to the customer's accuracy requirements. The application of the light band to adjust to different requirements prevents the shortcomings of point-type infrared detectors that are easily infected and affects the dependability of judgment, and can effectively judge the future. Tag reader who checks out the card. When the system figures out that tailgating has occurred, the system will respond based upon the location of the valid cardholder returned by the infrared detector. After the door opening signal is sent, there are still some unusual usages that will set off an alarm.

Swing Gate Turnstile is normally called a slap door in the rail transit industry. Its barrier body (gate pendulum) is in the kind of a plane with a particular area, perpendicular to the ground, and swings through rotation Implement blocking and release. The products of the blocking body are commonly stainless-steel, natural glass, and tempered glass. Some also utilize metal plates covered with special versatile products (to reduce the damage triggered by striking pedestrians). Bridge Smart Swing Door Gate The more popular name has been acquired from the initial bridge-shaped structure. It includes a primary chassis and 2 movable swing bars. The swing bars can swing 180 ° or 90 ° to attain the purpose of discouraging or launching. Column Swing Barrier Gate The appearance of the main devices remains in the form of a column, which can perform the exact same functions as the bridge type Swing Gate Gate. It is defined by lower expense and less space. RS Security Co., Ltd Main Products: door, flap gate, complete height gate, swing turnstile, hydraulic bollard, roadway blocker, gain access to control, face acknowledgment, barrier gate and so on. Application of Swing Barrier Turnstile It is generally utilized for passage entryway and exit management. Normally, only people are enabled to go through, or people dragging luggage, and disabled individuals. Considering that Swing Gate Turnstile can accomplish larger channel qualities than wing gates. Most Swing Gate passages can be mixed with pedestrians, bicycles, mopeds, handicapped automobiles and other non-motorized cars. component Swing Gate structural composition: Swing Door Gate includes chassis, movement, swing arm, control system, infrared sensor, It includes control devices and other parts. High-end brake Swing Turnstile includes: chassis, brake movement, control system, infrared sensing unit, control devices and other parts (high-end brake Swing Gate is that it can stop quickly and efficiently, there is no shaking, no mechanical stuck structure, and the swing arm automatically opens after power failure. It completely complies with fire security requirements).

Urban Furniture
Urban furniture is an important part of the lives of those of us who exist in urban environments. It is easy to ignore urban furniture and let it shape us, but to do so is not only boring, but foolish.
What Is Urban Furniture?
For our purposes, urban furniture will refer to the collection of physical features deployed in the public environment and oriented towards pedestrian activity for the purposes of providing or removing amenities. This definition is flexible and there is not much point in worrying about the edge cases. Pedestrian versus vehicular activity is the most significant boundary. The difference between a person in an automobile and a pedestrian is large, both in what they can do and how they behave, and we don't want to care about amenities for automobiles, which occupy an entirely different world, hostile to everyone else. Bicyclist versus pedestrian activity is a smaller leap, especially because a cyclist can change into a pedestrian and back easily. And then, with scooters, wheelchairs, and other mobility devices, the lines are blurry. Similarly, public and private space can intersect; an accessible space might be considered public but exclude enough freedoms to make the designation questionable, for example by requiring but not enforcing payment, or by denying freedom of expression.
What Are The Goals Of Urban Furniture?
Objects themselves have no purpose, of course. Their purpose comes from how and why they are deployed and used. What is the purpose behind installing urban furniture? Is it help or harm individual people? Yes, but more importantly, it is to help, harm, or influence populations.
Urban furniture provides or denies an amenity, essentially granting or removing an ability. It can allow rest with a bench or wall, give shelter with a roof, wall, or bollard, assist movement with a sidewalk, ramp, stairs, or handrail, or provide other resources such as a hitching post, heat, or water. It can distribute items, for example a newspaper box, ATM, rental bike rack, or vending machine. It can facilitate communication with a telephone, speaker, sign, or other content distribution method. And it can enable expression with services like a graffiti wall, amphitheater, or public square. It can deny rest with anti-sit and anti-lie devices or other obstructions, and it can deny movement with walls, railings, anti-skateboarding devices, or turnstiles.
Often, urban furniture might modify or encourage where an amenity can be accessed. A tree can be protected from pedestrian wear with a paved walkway that provides an easier path at a suitable distance. The mechanism used might not be completely physical, using communication such as markings or sounds that guide interactions between people, or assist the enforcement of rules by a separate class of people in police or security roles. In this way, the goals of urban furniture can be seen to be behavior modification.
How Should We Understand Urban Furniture?
The urban furniture around us should be considered with a psychogeographic approach. Notice what affordances are being given and taken away, and what behavior those changes are promoting or discouraging. How does it change the relationships between people, and between people and their environment? How does it shape the human society around it, and change the mood of the neighborhood and its occupants? It can also be helpful to explore the ecosystem of processes behind the deployment of urban furniture. What are the systems that cause it to end up where it is? How long are the bureaucratic supply chains behind it, and what are the conflicts between objectives which affect the placement and removal of urban furniture?
As pedestrians, we are the subjects of urban furniture, it is our behavior being modified. In the long term, our outlook is also being modified, as we respond to our environment and gradually alter what we consider to be possible and desirable. Do we think it is weird to pay a fare before entering a subway platform, or not be able to lie down in public, or only discard trash in a receptacle? Is it normal to loiter and interact with other people? While we may have exhibited some of these behaviors regardless, the help or hindrance provided by the built environment, amplified by the effects of observing how it is used by the people around us, influences many of our actions and even our desires.
Examples of urban furniture analysis
Pretend Benches
Tumblr media
At the first look, this might be described as an actual piece of furniture. It presents as a bus stop bench, designed to allow the human body to rest while waiting for a bus.
What affordances are really provided or denied by this item? Its shape shows one which is only slightly subtle. It has a tilted surface at waist height for some people. Is it intended to provide support, for people to snug their butts on the surface to lean against it? No, it is not. Nobody has ever done this. The resting surface is merely cosmetic, to provide the illusion of an amenity. It is meant to appear to be a minimum viable bench even though it is completely unsuitable for that task.
The most important aspect is the vertical surface. It is a billboard. Why is there a fake leaning surface at all? Because the bus company can say that the primary purpose of this item is for passengers to rest on while waiting for a bus. There is a design requirement that must be followed for this item to exist here.
Why is this billboard important? The bus company gets income by renting it out to advertisers. This also requires more behavior modification. Ordinary people are not allowed to decorate the billboard, only the advertisers approved by the bus company may. We might want to improve its message or replace it with our own, but we may not. In this case, the physical characteristics of the item don't prevent us, but the related machinery of civilization does. If the police catch us altering it, we will be punished.
Of course, it was illegal to sleep on a bus stop bench long before someone invented this assault on our humanity, but it is much more efficient when physical characteristics prevent the action and enforcement isn't necessary. The iterations of this kind of design in attempts to allow sitting, but not reclining, make benches a favorite subject for students of hostile architecture. Also well studied are the many amusing examples of methods to circumvent these design elements. In the end, it has always been the police who are the final method of compliance. This fake bench doesn't require them, because it is impossible to lie on. All that was required was to make it useless as a bench.
It is interesting to deduce the processes behind it. Why not just remove the bench? Because that also removes the advertising, which is the whole reason for its existence. But what is the system that makes it even possible? The bus company can't just put a billboard there, otherwise we'd see panels of them at every bus stop. The city lets them advertise on benches because, hey, people get a bench, so the company is allowed to fund it with an ad. They need to pretend that this is a bench. But it is obviously not a bench. The designers knew that it would never be used as a bench. The city regulators knew. And they knew that we knew.
This is the core of psychogeographic inquiry. What does the built environment reveal about the priorities of those who deploy it? What are the expressed motivations and what are the real motivations? How do they mold us, as people and as populations?
Bollards
Tumblr media
image distributed by IRSystems under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.
One of the oldest items of urban furniture is the bollard. Bollards can be seen all around the city, doing important work. Bollards evolved from mooring posts, and now serve as automobile area denial.
Look at any ATM or gas meter on a sidewalk vulnerable to ramming by a runaway or marauding car, and a bollard will be seen guarding it. The presence of a curb or a person is not enough. These bollards will be sturdy metal poles filled with concrete. Now visit a separated bicycle lane in America. You will not see the protection of a bollard. You may see Botts' dots, round domes a few inches high which give drivers a tactile warning as they swerve into the bike lane. Or you may see vertical traffic panels, flexible plastic pretend bollards designed to not damage the vehicles which strike them. What does this tell us about the values of hardware and humans? How does the escalation of the response to danger change with the source and target of that danger? How are we supposed to feel as people in these environments? Are we safe? Are we free? Can we be unguarded and open with each other?
Poles And Hitches
Tumblr media
Poles are everywhere and are perhaps the simplest form of urban furniture, a stick to elevate something else. The way that they are used is what makes them interesting. They are appropriated as hitches, signposts, and a substrate for artwork. Explicit hitches are also used in this way. It makes a routine event fun. Locking a bike gives us a moment to see who has been there, and provides a visual sniff test of the neighborhood.
Tumblr media
An important purpose of these objects is also protection from automobiles, a kind of single-use bollard. Because this is not their intended purpose - they are too expensive for that, their main reason for being goes away after they absorb an impact, and the humans they protect are not valuable - they often remain for a while after an impact until workers can be tasked to replace them. This allows them to fulfill another unintended purpose, a signal about the environment. You could be next!
Newspaper Boxes
Tumblr media
Newspaper boxes come in two varieties, coin-operated and free. Along with the intended purpose of distributing newspapers and pamphlets, they also create little coves of higher entropy where eddies of activity will deposit items. Shopping carts and items of landfill capitalism such as rental scooters can often be found in these zones, and of course smashed off pieces of cars.
Tumblr media
Their lifecycle also often involves them being abandoned in place after they are no longer being filled, where they will remain as they are slowly bludgeoned into crumpled masses. All of these factors make them interesting zones of urban anthropology, where the detritus of a neighborhood can be examined. However, they also illustrate the sad human custom of stuffing trash in any space that will hold it. And any protected space may become a site for a tent or a makeshift shelter.
Writing Surfaces
Tumblr media
Urban furniture doesn't need to be intentionally placed as furniture. "The street finds its own uses for things". Any flat surface can become a place for notes to be written: graffiti, messages to specific people, or just as a kind of talking to oneself. It is interesting to see what the neighborhood is thinking about.
What Should Be Done About Urban Furniture?
We should, of course, gladly adapt our actions and values to accommodate those examples of urban furniture which are helpful and have a beneficial effect on our communities. And we must approach all urban furniture in the same way we do the rest of the urban environment, with playful intentions and actions. We must appropriate our surroundings in order to survive as individuals and as populations, and those of us who are able are obligated to do this with ludic engagement, by perverting functional directives into play structures.
Examples Of The Use Of Urban Furniture
Repurposing
Many items of urban furniture can be repurposed. Often, the systems which were allowed to originally place it will revert it back, but some subtle alterations go unnoticed for long periods, and even obvious ones will sometimes reveal that nobody who is supposed to be responsible is paying attention. Newspaper boxes are good targets because, as noted, they are just left lying around without much organization.
Tumblr media
This box was turned into an art installation years or decades ago. It was moved into an out of the way side street, and it's just a remnant now, the rotating art show hasn't been updated for ages. Nobody is paid to care enough to remove it.
A more low-key change is to keep the original purpose of the device, but to replace the contents. Again, newspaper boxes are obvious candidates, more so during the golden age of copy shop exploitation and crackpot zine distribution, but still viable today.
With luck, the turf wars of that era can be revived. Some friends of mine once rebranded a vacant free newspaper box to give away their manifestos. After a period of successful distribution, they didn't refill it often enough and another group covered their signage with their own and took it over for their own zines, leading to some ironic complaining.
Additions, Improvements, And Alterations
It's always so nice to see that somebody has made the environment better for everyone. A handhold, a bootscraper, anything. A climbing rope in a fire escape, or a sketchy swing that is probably better left alone. And if not better, then at least different or confusing. Who is to say that an item bolted to one surface would not better serve the community bolted to a different one? Signs and other information sources can also be created or improved, wayfinding, notices and educational content can be placed. Rules, terms of service, legal boilerplate can be changed. Ideas workshopped, questions posed, color schemes rotated.
Games
The landscape of urban furniture can be made into a playground without anything other than the participation of one or more people, just by finding challenges. Physical contests can be invented on the fly anywhere, as anyone who is or was a child knows. Games can be created by adding rules or goals. Urban furniture can be used in unexpected ways, to see how creatively they can fulfill their original or new purposes, or just to see what assumptions can be broken without greatly changing the overall interactions. Routes can be followed to remain within or without the sight lines of types of installations. Stories can be built and expanded based on the engagements of unwitting passersby. By adding communication, other participants can be included without ever meeting. Chalk, stickers, or simply the placement and collection of objects can be used to communicate. Mazes can be drawn, puzzles eked out, and interactive guides can be grown.
Tumblr media
Any surface can be made into a challenge just by finding something difficult to do with it. The payphone near my house used to accumulate those stupid free commercial flyer boxes that littered the city. Walking home late one night, I thought they would look better if stacked. The newspaper box was empty and plastic, and all of its mass was in the weighted base. It turned out to be surprisingly hard to place it upright on top of the booth! It was taller than I could reach, so I had to toss it up there. It was easy to get the base to land, but if the pillar wasn't vertical, it would swing forward and back and fly off again. It became a fun test that amused me for a long time. Eventually, I gave up and began to walk away, only to hear a yell from an unidentified apartment nearby. "Don't give up! You can do it!" I waved in the direction of the voice and resolved to try again sometime, but a couple of days later, I found the box on top of the booth. My encouragers had succeeded where I had failed! Incidentally, this payphone was a COCOT, and the phone line was routed through the lamp enclosure, which can be accessed without breaking in or using specialized tools. Someone spliced a jack in there, so calls could be made for free by bringing a desk phone.
Adding Entire Instances
The city is full of features added by people and groups without permission, with good and bad motivations. It's incredibly fun and powerful to become the provider of urban furniture. Who's the boss now? But while the spirit of play might, if taken shallowly, encourage the practice of plunking down equipment and letting somebody else deal with it when it turns into street trash, this isn't sustainable for a long-lived project. The flip side is that the realities of maintaining assets and neighborhood relationships can be wearying. The behavior modifications we've been discussing don't just exist to turn people into docile sheep, they assist the maintainer's ability to keep the furniture available for all. To take the simplest example, flat horizontal surfaces are harder to maintain because people will leave their trash on them. It's easier to provide service if surfaces are tilted and won't hold items. Nooks and crannies will collect needles and cigarettes, alcoves may encourage activities better suited for other locations. In general, the lack of basic services provided by a callous society pushes some people into acting in unsustainable ways.
This is not to say that fun must be suppressed until all play is replaced by work. The balance must be found between propagating the ubiquitous smooth, secure, low-entropy facades of the cityscape, and giving people a little elbow room where they can decide to be socially redeeming even if some will not choose wisely. This hopefully encourages enough community support to avoid a wholly adversarial mindset.
Futel's Nefarious Role In The Ecosystem Of Urban Furniture
Futel's angle, of course, is to replicate and tweak structures that still have a few existing instances in the field. Why do we do this? To provide telephone service, of course, and to provide links to service providers over the telephone. And to provide radically accessible opportunities for pedestrians to interact creatively.
We are used to writing about this over and over again to drum up funding or outreach. It was more fun when we weren't as obvious about it, just putting down phones without any explanation, giving people something to discover and letting them wonder how many there were. The mere existence of our devices in a public setting is enough reason for us to place them, and luckily, we have found that they are still approached with curiosity. Do people doubt their memories when they see a new payphone? Do they invent strange backstories and weird organizations? Many do. More importantly, because our telephones cause some people to view their built environment with a critical eye, or make up stories and myths, or think about how they might participate, we know the project is extremely successful. We have a role in shaping not only the urban environment, but perceptions of the forms of the city and the forces behind them. And all we had to do was run a phone company for nine years.
