GOD. This one was HARD. I have a hate/love relationship with backgrounds (If you can call this a background) or perspective, so at least it was good practice! I really like how Sanya turned out, but tbh Yura looks kind of stiff in this bc the lines were too thick. Definetly hell playing again and again the video to get a better reference on the backpack only to realize that I could have just used any of the shots in THE MILL. I’ll definetly do Punch it, Punk! While it is true this concept makes no sense, the sad truth is that the show never made a full commitment about what the real consequences of incest are. In the show, the context for that line is Cersei trying to "explain" Joffrey's awful behavior, and, being Cersei, she blames it on the incest and the odds of having a "mad" child, and nothing else.

Even before season 8 I thought it wasn't exactly a fair assessment of the situation and that Tyrion was a little too eager to let her shift the blame entirely on the "incest blood", as if she hadn't encouraged her son every step of the way. If nothing else, I think Tyrion should have held her accountable for Joffrey hating him, because that was most definitely her doing. However, I chalked it up to Tyrion desperately wanting to be loved by his family and subconsciously making excuses for them. I did think that the incest thing was widly exaggerated by both the fandom and the show, but I thought to myself it didn't really matter. After all, Joffrey is just a one-dimensional villain who only ever existed as an obstacle for the heroes; the other, well rounded protagonists were something else entirely, right?

Fast forward to season 8, and my uncaring attitude bit me hard in the ass. I admit I should have been more critical of the treatment of the villains, because it's also a way to prime the audience for the future. If it happened once, it can happen twice, right? You can call it "foreshadowing!" and go home. It did work, in a way: look at all the people who say the "twist" could have made sense with proper writing and how many people just expect it to happen in the books.

I do think the books also rely a bit too much on incest as an excuse for everything, but in turn they have a rich Targaryen lore as a counterpoint to the "Targ Madness" claim, and they don't whitewash the non-Targ characters. Cersei's chapters, for example, really highlight how neither she or Robert could have raised a well adjusted child under any circumstances.*

The show, however, was always ambivalent about the Targaryens: on one hand, they knew Daenerys was their selling point so the Targ name had to be prominent. On the other hand, they had everyone shit on the Targaryens randomly, as if everyone shared Robert's point of view on them, even Cersei. This is especially evident in later season, but frankly it's always been there, and I think it contribuited heavily to the widespread fanon idea that the Targs were hated by everyone in Westeros and everyone was happy they died or left forever (unless, of course, it's time for Jon to be King Targ).

It all gets weirder when you add Cersei and Jaime: problematic writing aside, we're meant to empathize with Cersei's death in light of her pregnancy, which doesn't really make sense if incest always leads to abomination. And what about Gilly and her son? It's just not consistent.

The writing of the last season was, in many ways, similar to a Tumbrl post desperately trying to argue which character is more woke (tm) by 21st century standards, and finally settling for the familiar double standard stating that "thing is bad but only if Dany/the Targaryens do it". The only difference is that its quality was even worse than the usual anti post because 1. D&D just don't know how to write a compelling argument and 2. A lot of things sound stupider when spoken aloud (the "poor slavers" argument is a shiny example of this).

It's profoundly stupid, but it was only ever possible for them to think they could pull it off because they had basically done it before. So, I don't know. I guess what I've learned is that I shouldn't let suspicious narratives slide just because they apply to villains.

*As an aside, all those metas/fanfictions positing that "if Cersei and Robert had a child everything would have been fine" strike me as either very naive or very creepy. Those two couldn't even pretend to get along well when they were in public. No child around them could have been mentally healthy.
