Agreed that the upside of the whole tumblr-IRA-russian-sockpuppet thing was probably nothing. It happened, but ultimately I don't think the IRA turned the 2016 election. Trump won for other reasons.
But another instance of this pattern potentially did flip an election- Cambridge Analytica's involvement in the 2010 Trinidad and Tobago election. In that election there was a '''viral''' "Do So" campaign which encouraged the (left-leaning) young black electorate to abstain from voting as a political action. It was later exposed that that campaign was astroturf, and deliberately designed to benefit the right-wing party in the country. But that wasn't until post-2016 when western media started to give a shit about Cambridge Analytica.
https://www.guardian.co.tt/news/uncs-do-so-drive-uncovered-6.2.1595070.30834ed1c4
Obviously the takeaway here is not "anyone talking about BLM, or the total failure of the government towards black people generally is a chaos agent" but just that that message + "...and anyway that means that voting is worthless and the way to be a good leftist is definitely not to do it" should be treated with a grain of salt.
Were there Russian Chaos Agents on tumblr in 2016?
First things first:
Things I got wrong in earlier posts on this:
@ms-disinformation didn't identify these accounts ahead of time, this blog started posting in 2019 and is focused on accounts that are likely to be bot-run
Relatedly, the accounts accused of being Russian state actors were accused of being trolls, not bots - they were almost undoubtedly human-run
Tumblr didn't announce the mass ban of these accounts until several months after they did it - they banned the accounts in fall of 2017 and announced them in March 2018.
What actually happened?
The Internet Research Agency is a Russian company accused of creating fake social media accounts to attempt to influence the 2016 presidential election in favor of Donald Trump. On March 23, 2018, tumblr posted a list of accounts they claimed were linked to the IRA that they had terminated the previous fall. On November 16, 2018, they posted a second list of accounts given to them by law enforcement of other IRA-related accounts (unrelated to any election interference) that were also terminated.
How did tumblr identify these accounts?
tumblr has been extremely vague about the methodology used to find these accounts, but we do have another source: the Buzzfeed News journalist who wrote about the termination of these accounts back on February 6, 2018 (over a month before tumblr's post) identified them by cross-referencing tumblr accounts with twitter's list of IRA-affiliated accounts, finding similar or identical usernames and profile pictures.
Unfortunately, this only kicks the can further down the road - how did twitter identify these accounts? These sites don't want to reveal their methods, but this study offers some insights into the behavior of these accounts and possible tools used to identify them.
Why should we believe tumblr's narrative?
There are a lot of reasons I'm convinced that tumblr is being honest with us about this, the simplest of which is that they don't have a good reason to lie about this. tumblr nukes accounts all the time without disclosing its reasons - if they wanted to get rid of an arbitrary list of accounts they dislike, they could do that and none of us would know. They deleted these accounts months before posting any explanation at all, and the only backlash they received was in articles like the Buzzfeed News article above slamming them for not talking about the Russian troll problem, instead of accusing them of terminating activists.
It's also not like this is some tactic that tumblr has employed frequently - the list of IRA-affiliated accounts has been untouched since 2018. This was a once-off, not part of any organized strategy to suppress certain types of posters.
Moreover, tumblr users with similar post content were left untouched, including many that reblogged heavily from the IRA accounts - the Buzzfeed News article identifies one such blog (alwaysbewoke) who posted more or less the same type of antiracist, pro-Sanders activism (albeit without the eventual support for Trump) who wasn't deactivated.
It's also worth noting that the IRA is a real company and not a US boogeyman (even if some subsection of liberals use the phrase "Russian bot" as such) - recently, the leader of the Wagner group came forward and confirmed that he founded it and still finances and runs it, and he's relatively direct about the fact that it was used to interfere in US elections:
“Gentlemen, we interfered, we interfere and we will interfere,” Prigozhin said in November, one day before the US midterm elections.
Finally, and most convincingly in my opinion, no one behind any of the over a hundred accounts on the tumblr IRA list or the thousands on the twitter one have come forward in the past six years to claim that they were wrongfully associated with the IRA and banned as a result.
Isn't that fascinating? Can you imagine what a story it would be, if social media sites were not only terminating activists but lying about why they were doing it? Do you think that not a single one of these hundreds of alleged activists thought of calling a sympathetic journalist, showing them their US driver's license, and asking them to a run a story? What about messaging their old mutuals, or making a new account, or finding a federated platform that won't delete them on sight? I can't find a shred of evidence that any of this ever happened, and that's pretty telling.
The funny part is, there's no real evidence that these accounts ever achieved anything, and indeed, reasons to doubt that they did. They operated in preexisting echo chambers and circulated mostly true stories with a specific slant to them, with the occasional dash of outright lies. Certainly, it's hard to argue that they were less reliable or more biased than your average Fox News article. But arguing that they weren't Russian propaganda seems pretty difficult.

Tubal Uriah "Buzz" Butler (January 21, 1897 – February, 20, 1977), was a Grenadian-born Spiritual Baptist preacher and labour leader in Trinidad and Tobago. He is known for leading a series of labour riots between June 19 - July 6, 1937 and for forming a series of personalist political parties (the British Empire Citizens' and Workers' Home Rule Party, the Butler Home Rule Party, and finally the Butler Party) that focused its platform on the improvement of the working class. He became a volunteer in the British West Indies Regiment in WWI, serving in the British Army from 1914 to 1918, stationed in Egypt. He became active in political pressure groups and workers unions, establishing the Grenada Representative Government Movement, and the Grenada Union of Returned Soldiers. He went to south Trinidad and was employed at the Roodal Oilfields as a pipe-fitter. He became influenced by the philosophy of Marcus Garvey. He came to prominence in 1935 when he led a "hunger march" from the oilfields to Port of Spain. He was expelled from the Trinidad Labour Party for his "extremist tendencies". The Labour riots of 1937 resulted in turmoil throughout the oilfields. When strikes spread to the sugar factories, the Colonial government responded by issuing an arrest warrant for him. He was imprisoned September 9, 1937 to May 1939. He was re-arrested and detained for the duration of the WWII. The Butler Party captured the largest block of seats in the Legislative Council, but the Governor chose to exclude Butler and instead Albert Gomes became the first chief minister. In the 1956 General Elections the Butler Party only won two seats. The fiery radical, was deemed too unstable and threatening to the nation's economic well-being by Eric Williams and the People's National Movement. He is looked upon as the founding father of the Oilfields Workers' Trade Union and the labour movement and is honored with a statue in Fyzabad. He was awarded the Trinity Cross, the nation's highest honour. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CaPEfTIrQtAUAOI27wpK5UUzU8gjJ-jYBcL25k0/?utm_medium=tumblr

What is #Calypso ? Happy Monday! So you it’s time for #artinculture 🖼 🎶 Calypso, a type of folk song primarily from #Trinidad though sung elsewhere in the southern and eastern Caribbean islands. The subject of a #calypso text, usually witty and satiric, is a local and topical event of #political and #social import, and the tone is one of allusion, mockery, and double entendre. Shoutout to @onceuponatrini for sharing and suggesting her #Trinidad and Caribbean culture! #everythangculture #podcast #idonotowntherightstothismusic (at Trinidad and Tobago) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS62qwRnqVj/?utm_medium=tumblr

What are your favorite cultures outside your own?
Oh, that’s unexpected. Thanks, anon!
I think a lot about stories and language, so any culture that interests me in those ways becomes a near-instant favorite. We all know I’m still a weeb, so Japanese culture is on there. I took German, French, and Spanish at different points, but I’ve never been able to get into French or Spanish modes of thought, outside of French fairy tales of course. German culture used to be a favorite of mine. Some bad experiences in Germany proper soured me on it for a few years, but practicing the language again is helping those memories fade away.
I was an English major, and remain a huge Shakespeare/Austen/Romantic poet fan, so despite my repeated and intense dislike for the current UK government, I still love English culture. I did an abroad over there (before the cities were as violent as they are today) and had an amazing time. The Globe Theater is still the bomb btw. I don’t know as much about Scottish, Irish, and Welsh culture, but I hope to learn more about them and I have a soft spot for each of them. Perhaps because of my political admiration for their guts, I also think Poland and other Slavic/Eastern European cultures are cool, but I know little about each of them specifically. I know lots of shared characteristics, but I am horrible at differentiating them.
If I make foreign friends, their cultures become more of a point of focus for me. I had a friend on Tumblr move to Norway, and her passion for its beauty helped me love it. (Oh, and Frozen fandom helped too ;) ) The camp I worked at for many summers has quite a few Mexican counselors, and last year they were really nice to me and we hung out a bunch. It gave me a strong desire to learn Spanish so I could talk to them more (I need more time to learn languages, honestly). I will admit that seeing Coco last week also made me more interested in that culture. My sweet aunt is from Trinidad, and I barely remember going there when she married into the family, but I keep trying to learn more about the slang of the island and the foods they have there. My sister’s boyfriend is from China, and Chinese culture (particularly before communist rule) is amazingly varied and interesting.
So basically, I am into most of Europe, a few islands, and China. I have tried to immerse myself in other Asian cultures, or Middle Eastern and African ones, but I just haven’t been able to do so naturally yet. And maybe some of that’s political and some of it’s interest-fatigue (one can only know and have passion for so much at once). But it is what it is. Culture is the coolest thing.
tl;dr Japan, Germany, British Isles, Eastern Europe, Norway, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, China

One little bookshop repairs despair in search of books of Nobel Laureate
LiTTscapes - Landscapesof Fiction which treats with Naipaul and hundreds of other fictional works finds its place among a tribute to Nobel Laureate Sir Vidia Naipaul at Signature Stationary & Business Works
I was despairing. I was searching the bookshops to replace copies from my Naipaul collection that were borrowed and never returned. In any real country, the bookshops would be all over themselves to outdo the other in their displays of the works of the Nobel Laureate spawned by on and on its soils who had just passed. But not here. The biggest chain had none. It only stocked one that was on the school's booklist, I am told. After all, school books is the biggest market and reading is about commerce, eh, and well, the parents filling their children's booklist took those so there were none left, I am told. A few others had a few copies that had lingered in the back of stock rooms, and a couple that had remained on their shelves. I dreaded to ask for the works of the other Nobel Laureate, whose primary form was poetry and drama. I got a description from someone of what the shelves for local books in those stockrooms looked like, smaller than the little free libraries my friends were launching in different districts For The Love Of Reading. I know from experience with my own books that one has to beg and plead with the local bookshops to stock one's book. If one is lucky they may take one or two copies and unless one is are constantly watching their shelves once those are gone, well...
The bookshops borrow the shortsightedness of the education system and they both feed into the myopia of the society, chasing cheap paperbacks, and that only when they are in fad. I had long tried to stop shedding tears at the unending spiral or about despairing about the numbness about the institutions that are in name only. Hundreds of articles and book reviews and interviews and even a penning dozens of episodes of the television programme Booktalk and the society is yet still too deeply buried in the sands of ignorance. It is something tragic to have to add bookshops to the list of those institutions. The ones proactively promoting a culture of reading are less than the fingers on one hand. And then I came upon this that moved me to tears. Happy tears. One bookshop. It is not even a bookshop really, but labels iself a stationary supply store. 'We have no other branches. This is our only one,' the woman deputising for the owner told me. One bookshop had on its display, a tribute to the Nobel Laureate, Sir Vidia Naipaul, a photo encased, a few flowers below in reverence, and his books around. A handmade banner urges, "Support Our Local Writers". Below the photo was what moved me even more: at the base of the photo, and surrounded with the copies of the books written by Sir Vidia Naipaul was my compendium of the literary imagination - LiTTscapes - Landscapes of Fiction: the book hailed as the quintessential go to book for everything one wants to know about the literature of Trinidad and Tobago. How the works and thoughts of Sir Vidia Naipaul fits into and was born from and seeps into and out of the lifestyles and Landscapes of Fiction from Trinidad and Tobago.

Thanks to the little corner bookshop, Signature Stationary and Business Works in the Valpark Plaza where you can get a few Naipaul books and the book that puts him and the hundred others of our fiction writers in contexts of landscapes, culture, lifestyles. We are such a long way from the societies where bookshops are not only commercial entities but institutions of learning, relaxation and exchange, and we may never get there as the local indifference encourages and forces one to seek reading needs from online sources. We continue our journeys into the imagination this month of Patriots, with our LiTTributes to the NaTTion in our year of LiTTributes to the LaureaTTes at home and abroad in recognition of our distinguished literary and cultural heritage. Get your copy of LiTTscapes, and ask about LiTTours, LiTTeas and LiTTributes and how you can become a partner, sponsor or collaborator in our legacies of learning to redefining the role and function of the writer and literature in society.
