Albayrak, a Turkish teacher-in-training, was out with two of her Turkish girlfriends when they decided to go for an early morning snack at 3am at the Mcdonald's in Offenbach, a city in the state of Hesse, Germany on November 14, 2014.

But as they were eating, they heard a young girl screaming from the bottom of a staircase leading to the lavatory, and Albayrak ran downstairs where she found three Serbian teenagers molesting two young German girls.

A friend, who asked not to be named, said: "She put herself between the two girls and the men, and then Mcdonald's staff came along as well and the three were forced to leave."

Albayrak and her friends then continued eating. But she didn't realize the boys were waiting for them outside.

The friend said: "They started swearing at us and shoving us, and then one of them just hit her in the head. She went down instantly and didn't get up, and then they ran off."

The boy who hit her was 18-year-old Serbian teenager Sanel Masovic, from the Sandzak region of southwest Serbia, and Albayrak was pronounced brain dead on what would have been her 23rd birthday. Masovic was sentenced to three years and three months in a juvenile detention center, and then deported back to Serbia.

Tugce Albayrak: Germany pays tribute to student killed for helping harassed girls

Thousands of people have joined silent vigils across Germany to pay tribute to a student who was beaten to death after stopping a group of men harassing two girls.

Tugce Albayrak, 22, intervened when she heard the girls screaming for help in a restaurant toilet in the city of Offenbach on 15 November.

But later, in the car park, she was brutally attacked with a bat by one of the men and left with critical head injuries, the Suddeutsche Zeitung reported.

Her parents made the decision to switch off her life support on Friday after doctors told them she would never regain consciousness and declared her brain dead. It was her 23rd birthday.

Tugce, who was of Turkish descent, is being hailed as a hero across Germany, with thousands of people joining candlelit vigils in her honour outside the restaurant where she confronted the attackers and around the country.
