Underland Chronicles headcanons

Gregor & His Dad keep each other in check over their antidepressant/anti anxiety/PTSD medication schedule.

Gregor takes antidepressants to quell not just the depression but to quell the Rager instinct.

Grace and Gregor's dad go to couples therapy, not because they hate each other, but they have to relearn how to love each other after Gregor's dad's disappearance. He's also back teaching High School Science.

Lizzie gets super into KPOP, and wears headphones all of the time for comfort. She definitely does tiktok dances and tries to get Gregor to do them, but he just looks so awkward.

Mrs.Cormaci goes on a cruise and sends photos and posts cards from each country she's in. With a note about the food, rating each meal according to her proposed Ripred scale of enjoyment.

The Flowers that made Gregor trip balls in Curse Of The Warmbloods is the same plants that smoked Shorty in Scary Movie 2. Low-key feel like Underland Kush would go so crazy.

People thirst after Gregor in highschool, and it's really confusing for him because he literally gives them nothing to work with. But he learns girls are making fan edits of him. And he can't tell if he's supposed to like that or not.

Boots almost becomes Harambe 2.0 cause she wants to talk to all the animals And almost climbs in an enclosure.

Grace, due to her hospital stay Underland during the plague, is actually able to go back to school and become a nurse. But would never admit she was inspired by the Underland. She brings back A giant bottle of Tylenol and they all think she's the best healer in the word.

Period typical/tradition based Queerphobia exists, but so do Queer Underlanders.

Alright Questers, here’s my eagerly awaited post-Code of Claw thoughts.

I have read Animorphs and the Hunger Games, both of which are pretty brutal and violent, and this was genuinely the most brutal and violent book I’ve ever read. The rats tearing people apart??? Killing the whole hospital???? Regalia losing a THIRD of its population?????? Jesus Christ. And PearlPelt ripping Twirltounge’s head off…

I wish we had gotten more Nerissa. She’s one of my favorite side characters and I wish we saw more of her.

I thought the whole thing with Luxa being like “okay rats get out of here” and her and Ripred almost killing each other was kind of weird?? Like I feel like it was a set up the whole time. Maybe it was and I’ve lost all my media literacy

Gregor’s ending is a lot more depressing to me than Katniss’. Katniss at least got to rebuild and make a new home for herself. Gregor has no home. His family is together but not really. He’s only *twelve* and a literal war veteran. And he can’t even talk about it. Like idk I just feel worse for him. But the parallels between him and Katniss are really interesting. He gets his father back, she never will. Gregor gets his family but loses Luxa. Katniss loses her family but has Peeta. Gregor returns home but can’t ever feel at home in it. Katniss returns home and makes a new one out of it. Both of them suffer deeply and are changed forever by war, but Katniss just gets a more hopeful ending to me.

You all need to go read “Gregor the Overlander” by Suzanne Collin’s. It has a lot of this trope as well as fantastic commentary on the ethics of war and colonization as well as child soldiers. All while being an interesting fantasy story with great worldbuilding and characters.

it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.
