Small official styling reference
Inspired by the "Wen Hui Tu": Literary Gathering painting, the image of a minor clerk in Song dynasty is: hair cap, round collar robe with left lapel-over-right shirt underneath, and open crotch pants.
Tumblr media
In the Song Dynasty, men thought that showing their hair in public was not proper, so whenever you go out, you must wrap your hair in a scarf or a hat. It was both for prevention against dust and as good manners.

Tuan Guan (Round Crown) styling reference
Inspired by the murals from Baisha Tomb of Song.

Zhang Qiniang's crown is silver-plated and hand- decorated by gold. This was a trendy style among wealthy Song Dynasty women. There have been various other materials used as well, such as flowers and emerald-adorned and lacquered crowns.

"It was a small gesture, should not have made me feel so elated. The trees around us would claim so. Even the rain which has seen so much of us, our vulnerability, our compassion, our hatred. It must've thought so too. But when I asked you if you were scared of being seen, without hesitation you put your head on me. And that was all it took. That was enough to answer all my questions."

The Sims – A personality-filled escapism
I logged onto the Sims on a Thursday after a full day at uni. Next thing I know, 3 hours had passed; my Sim Maya had advanced to the next stage of her career; she attended a party, met a guy and went on a few dates. I would have continued playing hadn’t it been for my growling stomach at 9PM calling out for the dinner I had skipped. In the span of 3 hours, I was completely immersed in a world of my own imagination. And that instance got me thinking of why I got into Sims in the first place. And why this game has attracted so many players and keep them engaged in its world for decades.
I took to Reddit and Tumblr to find out the answers and came back with various types of responses. I asked: “What  got you into playing the Sims in the first place? Would you consider it as a portrayal or extension of yourself/ your mind?”
The question was set out to explore the dynamics between the players and the play, to discover the initial attraction of the Sims and whether it provides its players with a mirrored world that they can escape into. The answers were varied, but there were certainly re-emerging themes (access via my other blog post to see all the responses). The initial gateway that leads players to play Sims is generally objective: some were given as a present, some started playing because a relative/partner/friend was playing, some were simply bored. There was one instance where a player stated that the Sims was a part of their mental healing from family issues and that the game helped them “cheer up” .
However, the reason for their stay and their long-term commitment to the game was the ability to escape and immerse one’s imagination into the gameplay. The responses I get back majorly included the words “creativity” and “escape”, proving that the Sims allows their players to be freely creative and be completely engaged with their own simulated world. The Sims, as its genre falls into sandbox or simulation game, is designed to let people project their wish fulfilment and be in total control of their own “digital” lives. Many instances of the Sims modding community on Tumblr who offers expansion packs of celebrity-look-alike, vampire mansions, futuristic alien decors, etc are all created to satisfy players’ desire to escape in their Sims world and live out an alternative life. Myself included, though I did not engage in the modding community, I found myself designing my Sims to be the better-looking version of myself, making her have all the attributes and artistic ability that I wish I had time for in real life. The Sims has allowed me and many other players a space to fulfil one’s desire and goals they might never think they had.
These observations led me to discover a concept often mentioned when discussing game media: escapism. The term is used to describe the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities (Oxford). Particularly in media studies, game has been a prevalent medium for escapism because of its immersive nature (Guan – Vulture)
We turn to games when real life fails us – not merely in touristic fashion but closer to the case of emigrants, fleeing a home that has no place for them.  (Guan – Vulture)
This is also where video games gain its bad reputation, for escapism is often discussed to be the factor for video game addiction and it is scarcely mentioned as something positive (Calleja, 2010). Video games are often viewed as being inherently escapist for two main reasons: its offer of an attractive alluring virtuality as opposed to reality, its play and games as opposite of seriousness and work from the ordinary life (Calleja, 2010).  But this negative notion of addictive gaming culture is challenged and argued that digital games are escapist, but not any more than any other engaging activity. If we consider movies, or volunteer work, or simply reading are experiences necessary to a person’s enjoyment and fulfilment, then video games are merely a form of simulated experience in which their distinct escapist trait is “their ability to provide such a variety of designed experiences” (Calleja, 2010). This is especially true to the Sims, as there are few instances of Sims addiction but more of Sims engagement. The god-like nature of Sims gameplay opens up a vast rays of opportunities for self-portrayal and self-fulfilment that may be a better alternative of escapism when compared with drugs, alcoholism and gambling addiction (UNILAD). Thanks to its reality-simulation nature, the Sims is perfect for a person to escape social normality where pressures and chronic stresses are prevalent. In the SIMS, the gamers are free to create a perfect reality in which they have full control over the outcome.
This is where the term “escapism” meets it complication. What exactly are we escaping from? The binary notions of virtuality and reality separated by our computer screen is arguably being blurred out by modern technology and the on-going debate over ‘what defines reality?’ (Calleja, 2010) . It might be because of the game’s spatiality: a digital game can, for now, only be accessed via a certain technology medium (laptop, phone, PC,…) as opposed to others types of escapism such as books, or DJ-ing where the experiences are enjoyed in real life. But escapism is an important and unavoidable aspect of our culture (Tuan, 1998), and video games just so happen to allow for such escape in a spectrum unlimited and forever broadened by technology. Playing into this notion, the Sims stands out as “a better reflection of who we are as humans today” (Crecente, 2013).
Here’s an excerpt from my random thoughts while playing the Sims:
Date N/A –
Maya is pursuing her hobbies of playing guitar, being an Art person while maintaining a relationship with her boyfriend. I try to let her go to work for half a day, then let her socialise, practice guitar and hang out with her boyfriend for the other half. She’s pretty much set until I can access another chapter for her. But looking at her stories laying out like this, I think she’s a better version of myself. These are all the thing I have always wanted but does not have the time or resource to do. Wishing I could go out tomorrow and just get myself an electric guitar just cause.
I was jealous of Maya, in a weird way, since she turns out to be what I projected personality and hobbies and desire will be like in the future. When I log onto the Sims, I’m living the life I want to live. When a Redditor play the Sims, all their Sims tend to be offshoots of their personalities. When a Simblr (Tumblr blogs dedicated to Sims) started playing the Sims when she was 8, it helped her with mental health issues and gain the feeling “when someone goes through whatever you been through but they have figured out to escape the issue before you”. When a Success writer wrote about the Sims, she said it “taught her to really live” (Friedlander, 2017). Not only does the Sims allow for an escape, but it allows for an escape filled with one’s own personality and traits, filled with freedom to create another chapter in one’s imagination. It’s a creative outlet as well as a mirrored image for its players that hardly any other game has the ability to recreate.

SuperEverything* - live cinema performance trailer from THE LIGHT SURGEONS on Vimeo.
SuperEverything* is a cross disciplinary performing arts project, commissioned by the British Council and created by UK leading audio-visual artists The Light Surgeons in collaboration with Malaysian artists.
SuperEverything* weaves different documentary narratives to create a poetic audio-visual tapestry, that together form a kaleidoscopic portrait of the diverse cultural landscape of Malaysia. Filmed on location across Peninsular Malaysia, this project sets out to explore the relationship between identity, ritual and place by juxtaposing tradition and modernity to reveal a universal story about who we are and how our complex identities are connected.
SuperEverything* brings together a collection of Malaysian musical and visual talent to form a unique audio-visual collaboration. Fusing traditional South East Asian instruments, western classical compositions, field recordings and electronic synthesis and manipulating them live with a stunning, immersive cinematic experience.
This land mark piece of live cinema is exploded across multiple projections and layers together stunning documentary footage and motion graphics with a original, live electronic musical score to transport its audiences on a journey through these most universal themes. From our relationships with each other to our relationship with the environment, Super Everything* surveys our everyday rituals to reveal what unites and divides us. It is a journey through Malaysia’s past, to understand its present and to imagine its future.
It is a project that aims to elevate it's audience to contemplate our shared human story in order to reveal our collective commonality, and asks a timeless question about who we are as individuals and as a society.

PKR perlukan gabungan mantap menghadapi PRU15...
Independence day...
I am a Malaysian first, and a Malay second. I pray to God daily, and I believe in the hereafter where all of us will all be asked to account for what we did or did not do while we were alive. But I am not excessively and destructively religious. I am unhappy with how my religion has been hijacked for political purposes, and I am angry with the people doing it. I am also angry with the charlatans and titled people who call themselves our leaders. I am unhappy with the creeping Arabization of my multi-racial and multi-cultural Malaysia. And I am angry with the dumbing down of the Malay rural population by politicians without integrity, without honour, without honesty and without conscience. Being often labelled as incendiary by my classmates at the Royal Military College, I want to say something on this sad morning of the 63rd year of our independence. I do not care if you do not like what I am going to say. Most of my classmates are presently in this "waiting to die mode" and have chosen to detach themselves from worldly affairs. Some will have a slightly longer wait compared to others, but all of us will surely die. Although on future independence days after our deaths, the sun will still shine, and the birds will still sing, I say to them, do you not care what will be the state of this country that you inherited from your fathers, that you will in turn leave behind for your children, your grandchildren, and their children and grandchildren after you? Of course, you care. You would be lying if you say you did not care. If you choose silence, and to die without conscience for the state of the country that we are leaving behind for our grandchildren, and their grandchildren, that is your cowardly choice. I choose to say what I feel and although alone I cannot do much to change things, I hope by speaking out, enough people will have their conscience pricked, and our numbers may swell enough to outnumber the living dead. And hopefully, the enlightened will be large enough in number to make a difference. For a start, this affirmative action policy has gone on for far too long. Although it has helped a lot of Malays, as a double-edged sword, it is starting to hurt the Malays more than it helps. It has bred a crutch mentality among us Malays, to an extent that initiative and entrepreneurship have atrophied among the Malays. We have become risk-averse. Our people have now come to believe that they cannot achieve anything without government help. Our race has become the object of derision by the more independently successful Chinese. Let us wean the Malays away from affirmative action. Let us embrace meritocracy. We need to taste hard work and some failure, for us to learn how to walk without needing crutches.
The affirmative action policy, when it was first mooted after the dark days of the May 13 affair, was the right thing to do. But half a century later, this policy has bred a cadre of Malay rent seekers and politicians, who exploit this policy to enrich themselves immorally and illegally. In the name of helping the Malays, GLCs and GOCs have become instruments to steal and to siphon money from public coffers. The positions of heads of these GLCs and GOCs have systematically been given not to capable and qualified persons, but are rewards reserved for politicians to entice them to leap from one party to another. In addition, these positions are also dangled in front of many senior civil servants to buy their complicity in nefarious schemes to bleed the country’s coffers. At the trial of a previous Prime Minister, we heard how senior civil servants meekly carried out the orders of the sitting PM, without acting as the check and balance that there were intended to be. No doubt they were eyeing titles and cushy positions at GLCs and GOCs post their retirement from the civil service. I say GOCs and GLCs ought to be privatised. Government should only govern, and the private sector should be tasked to do businesses. This will remove the insidious opportunity for politicians to use the GOCs and GLCs as a political tool. The effects of this disease is so entrenched today, that we are now derisively labelled as the country with the biggest kleptocracy in the entire world. One of our past Prime Ministers have even been convicted of felony, and yet the dedak infused still kiss his hands and scream, what is there to be ashamed about, whenever he makes his police escorted rounds. What have become of these people? I worked in the oil industry, and I know that Norway and us started developing our oil and gas industry at about the same time. In fact, both Norway and Malaysia have about the same size of hydrocarbon reserves beneath or land and our seas. But while Norway managed their bounty carefully, and today they have one of the world’s largest sovereign fund from oil and gas resources, exceeding one trillion USD in value, Malaysia has a sovereign debt exceeding one trillion. I remember 55 years ago, one of our Prime Ministers booted Singapore out of Malaysia. I remember clearly watching LKY crying on black and white TV after that announcement. I remember that in the few years after that event, how we got one Singapore dollar at the Caltex station just before the causeway, for only 90 Malaysian cents. Today, the Malaysian Dollar and Cents have been renamed Ringgit and Sen, but the Singapore dollar is now worth 3.6 times our miserable Ringgit and Sen. And Singapore with no natural resources at all, except the perseverance, the will, and the ingenuity of its people, and the strategic thinking of their leaders, is today one of the wealthiest countries in the world, with a per capita GDP at least a dozen times more than ours.

We are proud to have a national language which is Malay, but the policy of closing English language schools and converting all schools into Malay medium schools, and leaving vernacular schools in existence, has led to disunity among Malaysians, because our children are now educated in silos, unlike my generation who were educated differently. Our diversity should have been an asset. Instead it is highlighted to divide us. Malay was never legally removed as the national language of Singapore, but the pragmatic and smart Singaporeans encouraged the study of English and Mandarin as these two are the leading languages for commerce and science in our part of the world. So, our nationalists and leaders have not been very clever. They have not managed the issue very well. I support Malay as the national language, but I have only contempt to the politicians who caused us to lose the advantage we would have had on the world stage with a population that was multi-lingual. I feel sad today in seeing how a section of our Malaysian population is being made to be the boogey for all the failures and weaknesses of another section, the privileged section of the populace. Yet, against all odds, like the people of Singapore, this boogey section of the population are the owners and drivers of the commercial and industrial engines of this country. IMHO it is our selfish, dishonest, and immoral leaders who are to be blamed for the mess our country is in, in this 63rd year of our independence. Even as our country bleeds from the Covid calamity, our so-called leaders, are still prioritising politics over focusing on saving the country, just like the proverbial Nero still playing his harp while Rome burns. The Malay proverb, “Harapkan pagar, pagar yang memakan padi,” is appropriate, in the case of our Malaysia. So, the question is, what can we do to pull ourselves out of this cesspool we are all in? For a start, let us start seeing the elephant in the room. Let us openly talk about our issues and our problems. To my 75 year old classmates, I say, let us pause a while in our preparations for the hereafter, and try to find a workable solution to this problem confronting our nation. If we do not talk about these issues, if we are silent, no solutions will be volunteered. I know it is difficult for those aboard the gravy train to talk about these things. But the rest of us who are not, should make ourselves heard. It is too much to expect the dedak infused and naive rural folks to see the light at this stage, because for a poor family earning just RM2000 a month, a BRIM gift-payment of RM2000 of taxpayer's money, is a powerful incentive to continue voting with their pockets instead of with their heads. It brings to mind the story once told about Stalin.
As a lesson to his followers, Stalin once ripped all the feathers off a live chicken. He then set the chicken on the floor a short distance away. The chicken was bloodied and suffering immensely, yet, when Stalin tossed some bits of wheat towards the bloodied chicken, it followed him around whenever he tossed wheat to the chicken. Stalin then said to his followers, "This is how easy it is to govern stupid people. They will follow you, no matter how much pain you cause them, as long as you throw them a little worthless treat, occasionally. One of our past and disgraced PM, who championed the policy that Cash is King, probably learned it in England where we went to school. In conclusion, I leave you this little anecdote, lifted from the book “Atlas Shrugged“, written by Ayn Rand in 1957, the year we gained independence from Britain. When you see that to produce, you need permission from men who produce nothing. When you see that money flows to those who deal NOT in goods, but in favours. When you see that men get richer by graft and by pull, than by work. And your laws do not protect you from them, but protect them from you. When you see corruption being rewarded, and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice, You will know that your society is doomed. - Yusuf Hashim

On one hand I feel like He Tian physically hurting Mo Guan Shan is getting old, and if OX is using it as a gimic then it seriously needs to stop. On the other hand, Mo cursed He Tians family, I don’t know how strong He Tuan’s feelings are for Mo, but if someone cursed about the people I love I’d probably hit them too (unless of course I love that person too, then I’d probably curse them right back).
Yea Guan shan was pretty rude to He Tian in this chapter, I feel bad for He Tian and the sandwich he bought. But well… It’s like a lot of the fans were starting to forget about He Tian and Guan Shan’s rough start and He Tian was so doting for so many of the past chapters, and all of the sudden WHAM. Idk about Tumblr but I remember back in 2015 or 2016 when I used to read a lot of weibo comments there were Chinese fans who seriously disliked He Tian because he was beating Guan shan up every other chapter they appeared in. I remember someone wrote a long comment under one of the old tianshan chapters on how she really hoped Guan shan doesn't end up with He Tian because she felt so bad for him getting beaten up all the time when his life is already so tough, it was one of the top comments for that chapter with thousands of likes. I feel like we were finally starting to forget all those, but it came creeping back again yesterday 😓
Like I said, you don’t actually have to mind my opinion, ships are a personal thing after all so as long as you are happy it’s all good. And I do like tianshan a lot. But if you ask me for my opinion on this chapter these are my honest feelings, that’s all.
