SECRETS OF THE CLANS TWO-CLAN OPENING
Art done by our member Pidge! -> BurningPigeon#3793
Secrets of the Clans is a 15+ discord based roleplay server! We have over 200+ members and a lively, welcoming space. Our world is based on the forest territory of the books with the four original clans.
What makes SOTC so special? We use a TTRPG system to add random chance and level-building skills into your RP experience. Not only that, but you will be sorted and clan-locked into one clan based on a personality quiz.
OPENING DATES
We’ll be having a two clan opening for Shadowclan and Riverclan for only a few days, in order to help even out our current number of members. Applications will open starting on September 25th and will stay open for two weeks through to October 9th.
FAQ AND FEATURES
Can we be in more than one clan? No, you are only able to create and play characters in one clan, though if you are unhappy with where you're sorted you can switch within the first two weeks of joining! Our clan-locked system helps to create bonds within your clan, more realistic cross-clan romances and rivalries as well as gatherings that can feel authentic and surprising!
What if I'm not familiar with warrior cats, or a dice system? SOTC is a great place for beginners! Many of our members have never read the books, nor had experience in dice-rolling prior to joining the server. Our staff and clan-buddies are in place to guide you through any questions you may have!
How does character creation work in SOTC? Upon first joining SOTC you will be given two character slots, which can be used to adopt a premade adopt, and one oc token that can be applied to make your own from-scratch character. (Only your first oc token will have an age-range applied to it!)
How do I play a kit or apprentice? Kits and Apprentices are special characters on SOTC, as nearly every child character started from a litter born in the clan's nursery! You can adopt these newly born characters (or any young cats who no longer have players!), with their guardian player's permission. The only exception are cats bought with a donation to one of our server's supported charities (Right now, we're donating to a blind cat rescue!)
FEATURES
🌈SOTC is very LGBTQ+ friendly! ★

Welcome back to another episode of: TMAGP & Treats!!!
This week's treat is......... Hot Chocolate Fudge!!!
This is an amazing success after the failures of episodes 7 & 8. Mostly. We don't talk about the marshmallows
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And without further ado, here is my thoughts!
- lets get this show on the road
- haha fudge!!! so fun!!!! (frantically looks up how to set up a double boiler)
- interesting title
- uhhhhhhhh
- sam maybe don't say that)????
- damnnn guess theyWHAAAT
- HANG ON WAIT A SECOND
- MAGNUS INSTITUTE????
- that is SO rude dnd is fun
- HEY THAT SOUNDS LIKE MOTW
- oh dammnnnnn it was a trap
- gamblers high,,,,,
- DUDE HE LITERALLY TURNS INTO A SUPERVILLAIN
- this is reminding me of that one arc in taz amnesty
- TEDDYYYYYY YOU'RE BACK
- woahhh is alice jealous??? damnn
- get behind me girl they're gonna think you actually wanna kill celia
- SAM NO
- okay since the fudge is set to cool for 4 hours that Should give me enough time to write my final thoughts and also write some miscellaneous things
FINAL THOUGHTS:
okay so, i can't be the only person who assumed that this episode reminded me of taz amnesty a Lot. maybe i've just been listening to the mcelroys too much lately but the 2d6 thing reminded me a Lot of the motw ttrpg. the dice reminded me a lot about the success of your rolls compared to how it translates in motw. like 2-6 is a hard fail, 7-9 is a mixed success, and 10+ is a full success. it could be a coincidence though. what's also a coincidence is the dice. i've mentioned it already, but the phenomenon of something altering fate that makes good/bad luck occur is so similar to one mini-arc of amnesty where a giant cottonwood tree was literally altering the course of fate with its cottonwood seeds to make bad things happen (accidents, that sort of thing. the mention of how the one guy died in this episode - being hit by a truck and being the only one to die because someone fell asleep at the wheel - reminded me a lot of similar "accidents" during that particular mini-arc).
also, i find alice's reaction to sam's (potential) crush on celia in this episode to be very telling. i don't actually think she's going to Kill celia, just to get that out of the way. but i think she does miss being with sam. maybe that's why she was acting like sam had a massive crush on celia when she was first introduced. i could be wrong though! maybe she's still trying to process her feelings but due to her nature of passing basically everything off as a joke it's being shoved to the side for her to deal with Later. the very classic "this is probably something i have to process but i'll push this aside for future me to deal with". that's not to say that alice and sam aren't good friends! i'm very glad that we have healthy examples of people who have broken up but still remain friends. you don't get that a lot.
also TEDDY!!!!!!! i'm so glad he's returned. i was worried for a moment that he was just not going to come back but i'm very glad to see he's still around. i started to sweat a bit when he mentioned that he already got fired from his last job but i was very relieved when he got a new job interview. stay out of the OIAR teddy.
also i find it very convenient how the moment sam admitted that he is saddened by the dead ends for the magnus institute, another case pops up with a reading on artifact storage with a pair of dice that apparently change your fate and bring you good luck/bad luck depending on how you rolled. And it's read by chester no less. i can't tell if chester is trying to bring sam further into this, or is cryptically trying to tell sam to stay away but sam just Isn't Listening.
going back to the pair of dice, i think it's interesting how the person writing the report for spooky dice stressed that he did not feel compelled to roll the dice in any way, nor did it feel like he was being possessed. he just Willingly did so. and so did everyone who rolled those dice. even the one man who tried to give them away couldn't resist rolling the dice one last time before getting snake eyes. this almost reminds me of gambling addictions, where while you technically Can stop at any time and it doesn't hurt you to (aside from i guess the consequences you already have), you feel the want to keep rolling. you wanna see what happens. you want that rush that you get when you roll high. that's a bit superficial though so i won't say that's the "true meaning" of the statement. i also must point out that this isn't exactly how any prior fears have acted. you could say "this falls under x, y, z, and b fears", but that kinda defeats the point. guy has spooky dice; things go wrong. also i find it laughable that the guy just goes full cartoon villain and dresses for the part of "guy who gives you dice and you roll them and Something Happens To You". sad that he died right at the end.
i like this episode a lot actually! i have to say this is probably my favorite one, genuinely. love the idea of spooky dice that make your life a literal ttrpg. i can't wait for episode ten where "alice and sam go to a place and do a thing". that's gonna be a special episode since that day's pi day! see you soon!

is the rain world dnd/ttrpg thing you mentioned in that doodle post something avaliable online or a more personal thing? just curious thankks ^w^
i asked the dm and they said that it's pretty much heavily reflavored dnd using the same weapon throughout (spear, i'd assume). however we have it set up so that there's no permanent character deaths unless there is a tpk (in which case, things Get Silly. with our last tpk we had to give up one of our memories to the cycle)
they said "honestly it's essentially just a really standard survival-horror module, with the addition of a major homebrewed rule: food pips
everyone gets a food bar based on their hit dice, a d4 is rolled to see how much is storage and how much is required, and that amount is required to be met before hibernating, otherwise you take a point of exhaustion
and enemy food worths are calculated by taking their hit die and making that number the amount of food you can receive
and of course, the 1d4 per fruit pip system, with one fruit being worth anywhere from 2-4 pips, with 1 being rotted, and a con save of 10 must be made to avoid losing a pip from getting sick
you may also want to mention that feats are used as your special scuggy traits, and original feats are 100% encouraged, thus why we have winner's tail drop and l2tm's water breathing"
... so there's that! and i'm pretty sure that they've offhand mentioned that lizards have dragon statblocks. and that they (the dm) love alternative solutions to combat for the creativity, but that it's really individual to the players/dm. we also all have our scugs as the harengon race technically
there's a lot of deaths! it's ok though. we always come back (BUT WATCH OUT)
...and here's my current character! their name is The Winner and they are a pathetic little islander slug (if a remote iterator can in the middle of the ocean counts as an island) who can drop their brightly colored tail like a lizard!

(l2tm, also mentioned in this post, is Looks To The Moon (2)- one of the few remaining original purposed organisms- she was a slug purposed to look like lttm (the normal one). however she is convinced that She (l2tm) is the normal one) (she belongs to @mantisgodsdomain )

My Warlock inspired multi pocket dice bag is here! It is so soft to the touch and will keep your dice nice and cozy for transport and storage. The embroidered design features a sigil with an eye surrounded by bone like antlers and there is a D20 on both the bottom and top points of the design. The bag has strong cord drawstrings accented with skull beads at the ends. This bag is SO BIG when it's fully open... there are 7 total sections inside, 6 lining the walls that will fit 3-4 sets of dice, and one really big pocket in the center. new year, new nerd shelf photos
the first shelf sits to the immediate right of my desk, roughly at eye line when sitting. I try to fill it with things that make me happy, things I want to keep safe & things that precious to me
the second shelf is lower down & holds all of my ttrpg supplies. notebooks, dice & other ephemera live in the storage bin. handbooks, rule sets & my d&d tarot deck live on the shelf, guarded by Vax. they're perfect to swivel around in my chair & access easily
I'm sure in 2024 some things will change around & get added or put into storage. but for now I love my little collection

Cards (Generative): Great RPG Mechanics #RPGMechanics
Prologue
One of the great tragedies of moving to online play has been making certain ttrpg elements more challenging. There’s the obvious: not being able to fully see & grok other players’ body language and the tactile element of a shared table with books & sheets in your hand. But there are also system elements made difficult like maps and shared dice rolling. While these particular issues had been solved by various VTTs and apps, there’s a cost in ease. For me it’s more work to assemble an electronic map and tokens than to grab stuff off the shelf.
Cards in rpgs are a tougher issue for online play. There have been apps to manage standard playing decks, but unique ones present more of a challenge. I’ve played quite a bit with the Roll20 app– and it works for some purposes but not for others. And, even with the ability to make unique electronic decks, you still don’t have the tactility– the sense of holding, shuffling, and managing your cards. The various board game simulators have aimed to replicate this, with varying success.
On Cards
Cards in tabletop rpg play usually have three possible functions: reference, generation, and resolution. I’ll talk about their place as a heightened randomizer tomorrow. Today I want to cover the cool ways in which they’re used to create worlds and set things up.
The earliest memory I have of someone doing this was an old-school player who picked up D&D in the mid-1970s as a college student. He ran a campaign where he would do a tarot reading and then based on that modify your stats, give you a family background, and assign you traits. It was simultaneously exciting and disempowering.
I had that in mind years later when I sketched out a tarot for our ongoing fantasy world. I mocked up cards and wrote up meanings for the whole deck, based on the history we developed. Eventually I used that as a prompt system for generating NPCs. You would draw three cards and then sketch out a character based on those elements.
That’s not unlike the approach taken by The Story Engine. It’s both a writing and a roleplay tool. The original one is a collection of prompts, which is interesting and probably a useful tool for doing in-depth session planning. But I’m more intrigued by The Deck of Worlds. This offers set of world-building elements and prompts. You stack and build up details on the tiles, creating an interesting picture. It’s beautifully put together.
Likewise we’ve seen a variety of cards as tiles used for generating random dungeons and wilderness areas. I can imagine a Hexcrawl done like this, letting the GM create the terrain as they go. I’m certain those are already out there. These generators make use of the strength of cards: the richness of information possible on them. They’re a step forward from the classic random roleplaying tables.
With cards, instead of a simple prompt, you can easily add more text, sub-tables, and graphical information. You elevate the randomizer. If you want to increase utility, you can use both sides or have the orientation of the cards impact the results. It’s a great way to bring tables to life– but does have the disadvantage of a more serious investment of energy. There’s a big difference between a multicolumn, one-page table and a version of that table done as a deck of cards. Speaking as someone who has accumulated a lot of RPG reference cards, I can attest that the space and storage component can become an issue– beyond the question of how many times you’ll actually need to use the deck…
But two recent games build the use of cards directly into the set up in an interesting way. Alice is Missing uses cards to establish the world. It’s clever because of how the cards to impart information and keep the play silent. You have character, clue, suspect, and location cards. The particular combination of those dramatically affects the story being told: what & when those appear.
Likewise Zombie World offers an cool approach to using cards as building blocks. A checklist card of elements guides the collaborative creation of the PCs’ enclave. But more interesting is the random set up which frames the whole game. Players are dealt four cards: 1 Past, 2 Present, and 1 Trauma. The first and the last of these they can look at, but are kept facedown. From the Present cards, describing who their character is now, each player picks one and turns it face up, discarding the other.
The decks are substantial for these– expanded by a couple of supplements. Based on the mix of their three cards players come up with character details and background. After introductions another set of cards is dealt out between players. This describes a relationship between the two of them. They then negotiate and work out the details. Once play actually begins, one of the goal each player has is to hit their trigger and reveal their Past and Trauma cards.
I love the way the use of the cards reinforces the themes of play. Character creation is super fast– you can set up and get to playing in 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the group. That’s the kind of energy you want going into a horror game like this. Zombie games lean into “we are our own worst enemies,” and the hidden elements of characters reinforce that. Characters are rich, but they are also disposable. If you die early, generating a new character is the work of a few moments. The cards also factor into resolution, but I’ll come to that tomorrow.
For a time Magpie had a sci-fi version of the Zombie World system on their docket. That seems to be in limbo now– perhaps the form factor of ZW didn’t do as well as they hoped or perhaps the success of the Avatar rpg washed everything else away. It’s too bad because right now, with the success of Among Us, a sci-fi take on these mechanics could be awesome.
