On lukola fandom

Here’s some venting about the lukola fandom, and its ways, and consequences, from an ordinary polin, Bridgerton and Luke fan.

Starting from the way Luke’s loved ones and friends are treated by its adherents. Especially his girlfriend. The hate towards her is visceral. The whole phenomenon of bullying and stalking someone just for existing and posting on their SM account from time to time probably needs to be studied by social studies scholars and parasocial relationship specialists, cause it’s new heights apparently.

So, what if she’s proud of Luke as her boyfriend and wants to show it? What if she wants to mark her territory sometimes, to which she has a right btw? What if she trolls haters and delusional IRL shippers occasionally? Hers is probably the most relatable behavior. I myself, as an introvert millennial who doesn’t run one single SM account and cringe from the exhibitionist nature of current SM posting practices, still recognize that there’s nothing unusual about that kind of posting per se. Why was Luke’s former gf, Jade, allowed to post him all the time (which is totally alright btw), but Antonia hinting at having, say, a dinner with Luke is shady, attention-seeking, desperate, needy and despicable?

It's not that I care particularly about her. In fact, I couldn’t care less if she’s replaced by Luke with some other woman in a couple of months or if she is his future wife and mother to his kids. I still believe, regardless of her status in the relationship, she deserves basic respect and decent treatment as a human being that we know pretty much nothing about. She does not deserve the vilification and demonization that she gets.

Luke too, has a right to privacy and respect for his personal choices that are nobody’s business. He owes no one anything in terms of disclosing his dating life and confirming his relationships. If for someone, Luke bringing the girl to almost all his travels and events with himself, is not a proof or statement in and of itself about her being his girlfriend, then that’s on them. No amount of intentional misreading and skewed takes on photos will trump this simple fact.

Also please don’t bring up virtue signaling and other cancel culture stupidities, such as moral judgements passed on Luke and his close ones for political or other values purportedly held by them, of which we in fact know zilch. It’s clear that this is just another useful tool in a shipping crusade.

Nicola too, deserves, for a change, to have her numerous statements taken seriously. Let alone, privacy. She’s being stalked by her so-called fans to insanity. I am sure she, to put it mildly, is uncomfortable about her “queen” and “goddess” status among the cultists, and being a projection vessel for a myriad of sad women. Cause she knows very well this type of passionate idolatry is an inch away from hate, and the plus sign switches to a minus sign the minute she does something not to their liking, a wrong brand or person supported, or not enough disciplining of Luke is exercised. The most delusional thing about lukolas is them truly believing themselves to be Nic’s or Luke’s fans.

Which brings us to the crux of the matter. That IRL shipping is bad, period. Some lukola bloggers on tumblr, TT and IG half-heartedly try to reign in and admonish the more unhinged segment of the fandom by telling them to behave and not bring their bul..t to the actors' feet. However, this is what the lukola discourse platforms, by simply existing, still do - breed crazy fan behavior. Because the problem lies in the belief system itself. No amount of reservations, house-keeping and discipline by lukola discourse 'leaders' will do away with the tenets and premises of this religion that seep through and twist every discussion and speculation about the figures involved (Luke, Nic, etc). Since every reasoning should work towards a certain end goal, all means and distortions are good to achieve it. Finding faults with Luke's character and behavior and demanding a 'redemption' from him, hating and criticizing Luke's friends and family, attributing motivations to the actors and their loved ones that best suit theories, online stalking etc. A myth about Luke ever publicly stating he was single during promo, a ridiculous myth about Bridgerton cast and showrunners shipping lukola (news flash – nobody in the cast cares about their co-stars’ private lives, stop the kindergarten), or the “papgate” affecting in any way Luke’s job prospects. Myths upon myths that build the house of cards of the lukola dogma. I myself wouldn’t care a damn about this fandom if it really contained itself to its close corners and group chats, however, unsurprisingly, they spill over in a grand fashion and permeate all discourse.

You really believe the innocent delulu fangirling has no by-products? These are the staple manifestations of the lukola and of any IRL shipping fandom, and popular lukola theorists are pretty successful in justifying and reinforcing them. And it should not be surprising that some followers, the most zealous and stupid ones, take it too far and actually harass people and be annoying in SM.

As a Luke and polin fan, I am annoyed by this, but I am 100% sure this sh*t is affecting the actors, and you all can kiss goodbye to the chemistry between Luke and Nic naturally displayed during promo. I am sure polin will not be affected, for L and N are excellent actors and friends, but you all soon will look sadly back to S3 promo tour as magic that will never come back.

seungcheol/joshua/jun/jihoon/seokmin would definitely understand why you’d feel anxious to drive, it’s a traumatic experience! he wouldn’t force or ask you to get back to driving until you say you want to try again.

when you tried to drive but the anxiety came over you, he would listen to what you’re afraid of and would try to guide you on how to conquer it. he’d start off by making you feel comfortable in a car so he would be the driver, with you in the passenger seat. he’d drive you to your favourite place. “hey, you can’t come here if you can’t drive yourself,” he said as a small tease. it was really more of a hinted encouragement.

once you’re ready, he’ll support you until you feel completely confident in driving again!! he’d sit in your passenger seat and reassure you that you’re okay.

slowly as days passed he gently reasoned with you so you’d start thinking about driving again. “yn do you know how much cheaper it is to drive rather than take public transport?” he asks as he brushes your hair with his fingers. he wasn’t rushing you into anything, he just thought it might help with your morale. he also just generally knew that you couldn’t stay scared.

soonyoung/wonwoo/mingyu/vernon stayed with you at home after the accident happened. he consoled you and made sure you were getting the comfort you needed.

during the time when you were anxious he tended to give you pep talks— “yn, you can do this. it’s scary i know but i will be there with you when you’re ready to try,” he said while holding both your hands. it’s a tough situation you’re in but he knows overtime you would regain your strength and courage.

he’d be the one to drive in the meantime until you’re ready. when you were they would of course be in the passenger seat. even if you drive one centimetre they’re already cheering for you. they’re endlessly caring and happy for however amount you try!!

It seems that people don't get that Luke and Nicola are human beings. They don't owe us anything. If they don't consent to something, we have no right to it. That includes AI images, being stalked and photographed, and filmed in public. Just because they are actors doesn't mean we get full access 24/7. They have given consent for making lovely edits of either Polin or Lukola. They have given us not only permission but also encourages us to support them as two people who love each other and care for each others well-being. It is very clear that they don't want attention on their personal lives. Either with them as a couple or with other people. Yes, Antonia wants the attention, seeks it out, and even lies to get it. Similarly, Jake also has seeked it out. I will die on the hill that they or their camps are behind papgate/streetstalker. Just too many coincidences to make it random.

It is not ok to snoop on family and friends' sm pages. When someone with 500 followers posts something, it is meant for those 500 people. You don't get to widen the net, just because you can. Taking screenshots and posting it on X or TT is bad behaviour. Because it is SM and public is just a justification of that bad behaviour. Morally, it is wrong. We started watching Castlevania: Nocturne last night (2 eps left) and it kinda coalesced something in my brain wrt the wank about Jayce and Viktor in Arcane.

Like, fandom and media in general has progressed to this point where I feel like we are no longer really living in an absolute dearth of representation. Like I see videos on my TT algorithm breaking down "are these shoes worth watching just for the lesbian/gay/GNC content" and there are just. So many thumbnails in the background. And certainly there can always be more, and there always SHOULD be more, but it's not nearly as dire as it was when I was growing up; using Brokeback as the watershed when "gay stuff" entered mainstream media consciousness, it's been less than 20 years and absolutely exponential growth.

So I no longer find it a moral failing on the part of creatives when explicit queerness doesn't appear in every place you might expect it; in many cases there is still queer rep present, besides.

All of this to say: once, knowing that creatives behind a project support or even champion readings of characters and their relationships as queer, but are unwilling to depict it on screen, is something I would have categorized as cowardice. Now, though, I don't find it carries the same weight.

I don't NEED Trevor and Alucard (or Trephacard tbh) to be explicitly canon. I don't need that level of commitment from the creatives to know that they are on my side. Was it hinted at excessively in OG Castlevania? Yep! Did the depiction of Alucard as bisexual, and participating willingly in a threesome during a period of loneliness and separation from Trevor and Sypha, imply a whole host of things (and launch a thousand fanfics)? Absolutely! Was I hoping to get some sort of explicit canonization in Nocturne? Yeah, I definitely was!

But it's not there, and I don't mind; and the reason I don't mind is because I know the creatives behind Powerhouse's Castlevania adaptations are on my side. I know Sam Deats ships the hell out of them. I know that when Alucard says things about being in love before, or about the cost of erasing names from the narrative, it's intended to grant permission--not needed or looked for, but appreciated nonetheless--to superimpose Trevor and Sypha onto his words.

We aren't being admonished and told, "It's not canon, it could never happen, you are interpreting it wrong!" It's a wink and a nudge; it's maybe not explicitly canon,but it's also not NOT canon, and it's being done in a way that makes clear it is not cowardice preventing them from making a bold statement.

It's something Castlevania has done really well, and something that I think some individuals on Arcane fumbled. We aren't necessarily living in a world, anymore, where failure to confirm and canonize queer relationships on screen is inherently homophobic or dangerous or rooted in archaic ways of thinking. No one had to come out and say Jayce and Viktor were 100% in love. They just had to not say they absolutely weren't.

(And maybe I'm reading way too much into the Deats' support of Castlevania fans and the Trephacard shippers, and I'm projecting; but at the end of the day that's still the image presented to me, and it makes me feel very safe while watching the show and crying every time Alucard mentions "Trevor" or "Belmonts", because while permission to ship or interpret has never been necessary, it's still nice to have.)

What a convenient way to forget Nightwing's arc with the Titans, written by Taylor a few months ago, the beginning of his Titans. Where raven wasn't at all "just Gar's gf", right? Raven did things on her own, she wasn't there just to be with Gar, she had moments, she had a leading role, she had a role in the arc that was much more than just being Gar's girlfriend, did you forget all that? Raven having action, Raven showing her best qualities with Olivia…She was the best and more interesting character of that arc without doubts. And even though she was with Gar there, it was never like she was stuck to him, was it?… While Raven had a second leader role in this arc, what happened with Gar? Nothing (he wasnt there just as Raven's boyfriend tho).

Do you remember TT Academy? Where Gar was doing exactly what Raven is doing now? Being a moral support for her partner? (oh no! A couple that helps and supports each other!😨😟) I bet at that moment you didn't think that Gar was "just Raven's bf", no, I bet you were saying something like "they made Raven Weak! Raven doesn't need a man!" Blah, blah, blah.

Traumas? What traumas? You know damn well that the only reason we're seeing Gar's trauma is because of what happened in Dark Crisis; otherwise we wouldn't see shit about his trauma, just like we won't see the other Titans' traumas.

Do you know what character progression is? Something Raven went through under Wolfman's writing? Do you remember how she tried to have relationships back then? how she tried to love, right? Raven has been free of Trigon for years, stop the cap, she can express her emotions without problems since the 80s.

Stop the cycle, do you want Raven to be some kind of Redhood going through the same arc over and over again?

Do you want Raven to be exactly like she was 40 years ago in the damn 80s, when she debuted as an 18-year-old woman who didn't even have friends and couldn't express her emotions?? Holy character regression!

If you say that Raven is unrecognizable and a totally different character (if that makes you feel better, keep pretending that, I guess) then just stop reading the comics…easy, that easy.

Did you start reading a Gar comic, where Raven was only going to be a character in a supporting role because the comic focuses on Gar and only Gar, hoping that she wouldn't be a character in a supporting role? The joke tells itself. Did you want her to be the protagonist of Gar's comic? And don't say she's just Gar's girlfriend and nothing more when she literally had her own comic where Gar WASN'T there, no matter how bad it was, it was a comic of her, about her, with a story for her, Gar wasn't there(i bet you got maddd when Raven talked about him tho{1 line in a 30 pages comic, before you even say anything lmao}).

Before this new Titans comic what did Gar have? Nothing at all. Raven instead? She had the storyline of Unkindness, she had some small roles in that same storyline in TTA and Shazam(where she was also given some respect), she had an important role in Dark Crisis: The Deadly Green, and it didn't end there, she also had a big fight with The Spectre. Gar at the event, meanwhile, was only being used as motivation for Dick and nothing else (0 scenes of Gar with Raven or Cyborg even when they are the characters that should have been with him). (And not to mention the Titans United comics, those are not from the main earth, but Raven had a big role in the second one, and in none of them was she "just Gar's gf", i wasnt a big fan tho).

Oh and let's not forget the comic where once again Raven crossed paths with Trigon, and it wasn't the best thing in the world, but Gar wasn't there… she literally got a mini story for herself there in that Lazarus Planet tie-in, while Gar at that time only had the back up from Action Comics with Power Girl, where they once again ignored Raven and Victor and used Dick.

And there was also Knight Terrors: Titans, where once again, Raven wasnt there as "just Gar's gf".

Umm, no, just because a writer doesn't give focus to the character you want it means it is misogyny😂. There are 4 issues that don't focus on Raven, so he hates women? 😂, let's completely forget how he even put Donna in the role of leader in that mission(not much but is more than what she got in the last 3 years). They are setting up Beast World, of course they will focus on Gar. And even then, let's look at who's been focused on so far: Dick(who is Taylor's favorite and is being pushed by editorial as a super leader), Gar(who is being set up for something bigger) and Wally(who is part of a semi-plot from the comic). Vic isn't getting that much focus either, I guess that makes Taylor racist, right?… Don't worry, more moments will come for them, I repeat, ITS 4 ISSUES IN. Even Taylor has said that Kori will have more prominence in the next issues.

Do you remember the little arc with the Brotherhood of Evil and Madame Rogue?…who was the lead and who was in a supporting role?…oh yeah! Gar was the main character while the others were mostly sidelined… And that was by Wolfman and Pérez…

About the part of Taylor not knowing how to write women, Taylor isnt a perfect writer for sure, im not saying he is, and he isn't Gail Simone, he misses too, but yk one of his most acclaimed comics from marvel is a comic about a female character(X-23), right? Lol.

You say Taylor doesn't understand her, yet, he is probably writing the best version of Raven since Wolfman in the 80s. He clearly understand this character, and its funny that you pretend he doesnt. Cant even imagine how you reacted to Teen Titans Rebirth Raven🥴.

We both know that if Raven had these scenes she is having with Gar, with Donna or Kori instead, you wouldn't be saying shit. "he got married to satisfy the expectations of society at large and his homophobic mother. he got engaged to a woman because that was what he felt he was supposed to do," you argue. except he was far too young, especially for a man, to be expected to get married by society, and the instigating conflict of joey's spotlight story was the fact that joey getting moon-eyed over her client's daughter was the last thing adeline wanted. adeline's reaction to joey whipping out a diamond was basically, "fuck god damn it shit fuck." 2_ joey hasn't been shown to have sex on the page, but it is implied that he pulls. in two instances, it is heavily implied (all but explicitly stated) that he had sex with two women at least once, but likely multiple times: two of his regular models, including lissa, from those women's dialog (a suggestive answeing machine message and lissa's comment after the fight in which he possesses her). he appears to desire and enjoy having sex with women. there are two instances of which could be read as ambiguous or as supporting the gay-joey agenda: a. joey dropping his date off at her apartment and refusing to stay the night despite his date's pleas for him to stay the night in the joey/raven date fake-out. you could argue that this is just him playing the role of a straight man and weaseling out of sex with women at the last moment whenever possible, but you could also read this is as joey, despite being a man, not being willing to shove his dick into any woman he sees any time of day and being, in fact, more concerned with his friend/romantic interest, raven, than getting his dick wet. b. joey refusing kole's explicit offer of sex, which could be read as him refusing sex with a woman due to being gay, yes, but could also be read as a rare man with compassion and respect for women refusing to take advantage of a vulnerable girl. because. yeah, if he fucked her, that would have been taking advantage of her. considering the dynamics at play, some might even call it rape. she, a victim twice-over of her parents' experimentation and of the gods and who is clearly mentally unwell and has been sobbing off and on since being rescued, is clinging to the first man she sees and trying to pay him back for rescuing her and providing her shelter and protection with sex. furthermore, considering her age when abducted, her being held against her will, and the fact that she implies having participated in the veritable orgies on olympus, she can be considered a victim of sexual abuse. key in the original is kole's acknowledgement of homosexuality (at least witnessing tons of casual fucking on olympus, some of which must have been gay) as a possibility and verifying if joey is into women to his face. to her, joey being is a possibility she has already considered, and one she wants to verify. instead of stating that he's gay, joey seems to shove her into the friend zone. the effect in the original i more along the lines of, "i do 'like girls', but i'm not willing to fuck any girl i see, and i don't want to fuck you." making joey gay makes the point of this scene not that joey is a good man who refuses to take advantage of a vulnerable girl, but that joey is simply not interested. it strips everything special from this scene.

theoretically, if kole were mentally sound and secure, he might not have turned her down. but not only is she very much not that, she gets worse with time. after their trip to her parents' house, joey, despite having refused sex with her and firmly put her in the friend zone, he wakes up with her having snuck into his room, crept into his bed, and fallen asleep curled up next to him, violating all the boundaries he previously established. all while he's having an internal crisis. this is crazy behavior. this is a warning. the pussy is unhinged.

let's review: there are plenty of reasons that joey wouldn't want to fuck kole, supported by the text, that aren't "he's gay."

In reality, yes. In his own opinion, no. Daren is very idealistic almost to the point of compulsion and is hypercritical of his own actions. Any hesitation or faltering in his moral code feels like a betrayal of his friends' trust and his family's teachings. He gets better with time and is more forgiving of himself and others once he unpacks some of the Trauma and honestly in his 30s does a much better job of honoring the spirit of his morals not just the letter of the law.

30) Who do they most regret meeting? 

Ooh. If you asked him right after slaying the Archdemon, it would be a tie between Morrigan and Alistair because they were two of his best friends and both of them left him in the end ... but that's just the hurt talking. The actual answer is Pyral Harrowmont because he crowns him and then is forced to actually interact with him professionally in the following decades ... at least as much as Harrowmont's isolationist policies allow.

So... Sometimes the good guys do bad things. The Rebels are Terrorists, but they were fighting against tyranny. Another example of this is Mistborn: The Final Empire. The main character, Kelsier, a thief that leads a rebellion against the Lord Ruler thousand years of rule that kept people in slavery and a massive class divide. After escaping a Death Camp, he goes on a systematic controlled rampage, slowly destroying the whole power structure of the Lord Ruler's government, including murder, Lies, fear campaigns, espionage, back stabbing, and more... The guy is a terrorist. But on the side of right. It makes for a lot of interesting moral conversation around him too on what he does is right, wrong, or something else because he is painted as a hero but as the story goes on and you get outside views of him later, you see the more dark effects of his actions in the first book.
