OC Gender and Sexuality Rambling

Just to be fair, I personally don't like advertising diversity of any sort onto my characters purely because I feel that I should let them speak for themselves. Reason being is that if I do such a thing, people will probably hate me for it. I know my audience is open-minded about certain things, but it still makes me feel nervous about it regardless. At the same time, however, if I don’t reveal a character’s gender/sexuality/etc. soon, then people are going to assume that said character is straight/cis, which is something I don’t want at all!

When I first introduced Jewel (my Shiny Sylveon character) as a homosexual male who likes putting on mascara...I was really terrified of how people would react. Would they hate me for introducing a feminine-looking Sylveon who was actually a male, or...? Turns out, they actually liked his design, they didn’t care if he was male or if he was gay. Jewel was Jewel, and that was all that mattered. Same thing went for Riley, my trans male Meowstic. Except in Riley’s case, his being transgender was something I had planned since his creation. I’ve also been pretty private about his real identity when he was still known by his false persona of “Chihiro Tsumika” and back when I was still in PMDU.

That said, although I haven’t revealed too much about Evelynn (my Feliolm character), I personally don’t want people to assume that she’s straight/cis because she actually isn’t. However, I do want to make sure that I can reveal her gender/sexuality soon (but not too soon) so I don’t jump in too late and be all, “Hey! ___ was ___ the whole time” and have people get pissed off at me, which is definitely something I don’t want at all. Eve herself is also a fairly private person herself when it comes to these kinds of things, so it definitely won’t be revealed any time soon.

I know I’m crossing into spoiler zone at the moment, but even if her gender identity does get revealed, one thing will still remain constant. Eve will always be Eve, and that’s all that matters in the end. Nothing else will ever change about her.
