HI @rainbowghostcat and @boxx-sama -- I have been enabled so I'm here to ramble a bit about my faves >:3 Top three are definitely Fuuta, Mahiru, and Yuno! Good taste gang !!🤝✨✨✨

It's a mix of enjoying their songs, genuinely getting into their stories, and relating to them just enough to go a little crazy asdfsd :') Shidou comes in at a close 4th, I love him a lot but I'm not as insane as I am about these guys lmao.

I was holding onto these asks to ramble when I had the time/energy but uuuuhhh I didn't mean to go on for so long sorry 😭 Woe, 03 06 02 thoughts be upon ye...

Starting with Fuuta!! His character has everything – He’s cool, he’s lame, he’s terrifying, he’s tragic, he’s funny, he’s unbearably real, he’s my silly little guy, he makes me cry, etc. The core of his character that always gets me is how normal he is. How he’s probably closest to the majority of the audience – he (and Kazui) are the only ones who did not have murder on their mind at all. He anticipated harm, but the thought of someone dying never once crossed his mind. He’s right around teens/early twenties. He engages with the online world a lot. So many milgram fans are in that age range, on the internet a lot (in order to enjoy the project and its fanbase), feel a strong sense of justice (since they’re so engaged in a project about morality), and aren’t in any situation dramatic enough that they expect anyone to die. He’s so much like all of us. 

Continuing on that, his heart really is in the right place to start. He cares deeply about people and society, which is why he wants to fix it. His vision is a bit small, focusing on petty issues rather than huge social issues, but the point is he cares. He attacks Es because he’s trying to be the brave representative after hearing Haruka and Yuno were attacked. He yells at Kazui and Mahiru because they’re not helping the others. He takes care of Haruka. He gives Mahiru a birthday gift even when he has nothing to give. 

His biggest issue is, he doesn’t belong. I’ve written up a whole analysis on how he’s written very neurodivergent: he misses social cues, he’s on the outskirts of friendships and groups. It’s more clear in characters like Haruka and Muu, but Fuuta is just as incredibly desperate for attention. For love. For that feeling of belonging in a group. His knightly fantasies aren’t ones of violence and weapons – they’re mostly scenes of him surrounded by a close-knit party of adventurers who are cheering him on. 

All of this together is what makes him so compelling and so tragic to me. All the characters are human and real, but he’s the closest to a lot of viewers (myself included). He let the attention get to his head for just a bit too long, let himself get swept away in finally having friends. He got distracted thinking that the focus of being a hero was defeating, and not protecting. And all it took was a brief time of getting drunk on this attention, and now he has a little girl’s blood on his hands. It makes me absolutely insane.

I also think he’s such a cool special case because he truly got a taste of his own medicine. The other characters are being judged in an unfamiliar way, but he is being scrutinized in the Exact same way that Fuuta pried open others’ privacy. He was attacked and almost died because of Es’ judgment, just as his victim was attacked because of his judgment. The process of Milgram is putting him in his victim’s shoes, and it’s so cool to see.

Aaaaand on a lighter note – he’s just so fun!! He’s my little skrunkly fr!!! I love his shit-eating grin. I love his ridiculous laugh. I love his crooked teeth. I love the knight theme, and the fire symbolism. It’s pretty standard, but it suits him perfectly. He’s got such cool, badass songs! I’m obsessed with his voice, both his singing and vd performances are incredible. His vds are the only ones I’ll listen to often and out of the blue – Arthur Lounsbery uses such an interesting and fun voice for him ;--; His design is so fun (apparently I have a Type for redhead characters…), and his t2 development and design were amazing! There has been no other Milgram character that I want to reach through the screen and shake violently by the shoulders and also hug so badly 😂

I’m so obsessed with her theme of ‘being so kind that it causes harm’!! Because it’s very easy to dismiss the other characters as unforgivable when you look at the harm they wanted to cause their victim, or disregard they had for their victim’s feelings. But Mahiru… she doesn’t want to cause any harm. At all. She took her boyfriend’s feelings into consideration so much so that she didn’t stop him when she definitely should have. She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body and yet she fucked up big time!! It’s such a unique type of murder!! The other characters need to be sat down and told “don’t hurt innocents, don’t seek revenge, don’t be selfish, etc” and then Mahiru is over here like “don’t be… nice to people.” Because it’s not about being nice per se – it’s about not being a doormat. 

(I know her story is still a bit mysterious – my running theory is that her bf had health issues completely separate from their relationship. They started getting bad and he started to consider suicide. Instead of stopping him, Mahiru combined her need to copy her lover (as seen a lot in TIHTBILWY), her ideas that lovers do everything together, and her belief that one should do anything they set their mind to (as seen in her comments about Es/Kotoko and the attack). She says she’ll join him, make it a lovers’ suicide, but doesn’t follow through at the last second.)

She (and Mikoto) have really interesting themes of how not caring for yourself can actually hurt others. They put all their efforts into giving back to others, to society, fitting into the norms and expectations, not questioning others, and it backfires catastrophically. If she had stood up for herself and her relationship, she would not have assumed anyone deserved to die. She would have known that it wasn’t up to her alone to deal with her bf’s mental issues. She obviously wasn’t handling it correctly (rats….) but she didn’t need to! She should have pointed him to professionals instead of deciding she deserved to die along with him! But she was so poisoned by society’s expectations of being the perfect girlfriend and being considerate of others…

She’s just such a tragic case because the power of love is supposed to be perfect. She’s been taught her whole life that it’s wonderful and magical and pure. Who can kill with the power of love, after all? I can completely understand her denial of the situation, because I also wouldn’t picture a terrifying, dark scene if I knew I was only being nice for my whole life! 

And her crime aside – she’s super fun :3 She has The Most Fun songs, she’s full of energy and excitement and enthusiasm! (out of the various english covers I like, hers is the one I jam out to most often hehe). She’s the most stunning character there! I’m a sucker for sunshine-coded characters 🌻🌻🌻I think she has the best symbols out of everyone, between the birdcage and the carousel. The fact that both Mahiru and her bf could be the bird and the cage. The two symbols representing beautiful things that can be trapping. Representing cycles. Representing relationships. I know the hourglass is a popular one but I think this is Yamanaka's finest set of symbols. I am unwell about it. So yeah, rather than give her a good shake I want to yank her right out of there – Get in loser we’re gonna get you some self-love!!!!

And a slightly shorter rant on Yuno because that was a lot adfsdf. Ad I'm aware of the irony that one of my points is that it kinda sucks how most rants on Yuno are cut short :( The thing is, she’s been very honest about her crime, and most people have considered her issue in a context outside of Milgram so they already have a pretty good idea on where their vote stands. Despite being the “obvious” innocent one, she really is the most emotionally charged character imo. It’s easy to relate to the other characters and feel knee-jerk reaction, but none have been so widely discussed as abortion and sex work. I can talk openly about everyone else and get into a nice discussion on morals and emotions, but Yuno is the one character I have to talk very, very carefully around. Whether I’m rambling about Milgram to my family or interacting with new fans, I never know what’s acceptable to say without falling into a whole debate on politics.

So, if it’s made me into someone who keeps quiet and skirts around things, I shudder to imagine the amount of lying/masking Yuno herself must do on a daily basis. I can easily avoid the topic if I choose to – she was dealing with that debate long before coming to Milgram, and is currently dealing with debates and judgements and insults and pity surrounding it. She’s naturally strong so I think fans often forget all the shit that this 18yo is dealing with on a daily basis, and how effortless she’s making it look <3

so. we know how milgram tries to alter our perception of characters through the MVs to make us vote Guilty? lyrics are, of course, a part of that until recently I haven't tried checking out if the MVs provide any other language, and would you look at that, with Trial 2 progressing on they've hired more translators, one of them doing it into French!

and you know me, i'm a translator myself who speaks french too, so I took it upon myself to check how much do the official english lyrics overlap with those french ones. as i found out, very little!

the word I'm translating as "loser" (un raté) here, were I the most direct possible, would be more along the lines of "the failed one" or "the failure"

i am uncertain as to what the "it" here references. it can't be "love" because in french, that's a masculine noun and the "it" is feminine. it's just a side observation, but the word jewelry (bijouterie) and affection are feminine though

sounds weird in english, but the essence is "im super strong, i'm so cool! look at how great i am!"

they maintained the dreaMU joke if you're wondering, though the word they changed isn't "dream" but "my" (mon -> MUn)

I dunno I'm having gender thoughts. So here's the gender of almost all the characters in Ambivalent Souls

Maroon: he/they, Doesn't really want to use a specific label.

Zerie: he/they/she, Demiboy

Krystll: she/her, Cis

Hare: Gender? Um, yeah, he has one. He's...not sure what it is. He goes by he/him pronouns but using other pronouns for him makes him happy

Midnight: She/they, Demigirl (just like me fr)

Xosi: They/she/he, Genderfluid

Feil: They/zey, Agender

Nova: He/him...I dunno all eldritch beings just kinda decided their gender when they were first formed. Not really cis but he is in his mind. Cis+ but if stargender is a thing he'll get really excited about that

Attakai: She/her but she's okay if you accidentally use the wrong pronouns for her.

You gently shut the door to the entrance of your shared home, hoping you don't wake up its sleeping residents at midnight. Your soft footsteps still made the wooden floorboards creak; moonlight glowing through the window, the peaceful quiet welcoming you home.

Your eyes catch the few toys scattered around the coffee table, books on the kitchen island, and the faint smell of curry still lingered in the air, making you smile. Undeniable proof of the life being lived within these walls.

Slowly, you made your way up the stairs, stretching your aching body from a mission that took more time than anticipated.

A yawn escapes your mouth as you peek in mimiko and hanakos room, silently chuckling at the way the two sisters huddled together under the covers with their favorite plushie in the middle. It was only their favorite because Suguru bought it. They obviously had a favorite guardian.

Your next stop was Megumi and Tsumiki's room. Gently opening the door, you were surprised to see the scene in front of you. The two kids were sleeping soundly in their seperated beds except Megumi had an interloper. A slender body was curled next to the boy, a long arm was over his chubby middle, the covers barely covering half of his frame. Familiar tinted sunglasses were on his night stand and the interlopers snow white hair almost glowed in the moonlight shining from the window.

You quickly take pictures on your phone, snickering slightly, wanting to capture this moment forever and of course to tease them both tomorrow. Megumi could act indifferent to Gojo all he wants, you know he secretly admires him despite the short time being together.

Amusement and fondess graces your features. Gojo didn't even change out of his uniform which irked you a bit, but his sleeping face made up for it. You barely see him so relaxed- yes he was an overenergetic and overconfident idiot who makes it seem like everything is just rainbows and butterflies in this world, but you knew better- the things he hides behind those sunglasses, the pressure to be greater, to be stronger, to protect everyone.

He had the entire world on his shoulders. You can't even begin to imagine what it was like being the Gojo Satoru so sue you if didn't want to wake him up despite him sleeping in a cramped bed. He deserved to escape his responsibilities and pressure he puts on himself even for a little while.

A soft small voice laced with sleep pulled you out of your thoughts. You turn and see Tsuimiki sitting up,

"They fell asleep arguing with each other." She says, sleepily rubbing her eyes.

"Of course they did." You shake you head.

You sat at the edge of Tsumikis bed, voice quiet, "Sorry, did I wake you?"

She shakes her head in response, "No, I sometimes get up to pee at this hour."

You visibly relax, then another thought popped into your head, "What were they arguing about?"

She grinned teasingly, "About which boy in the house you liked best."

You stifle a laugh, covering your mouth. "Well jokes on them because I like Suguru best."

That was a lie, you know who your favorite was and it wasn't Suguru, but he was a close second.

"I tried telling them that too, but they just looked at me like it was the most disgusting thing they've ever heard."

You couldn't stop the giggle that escapes you, which made you quicklycheck if they were still asleep. You gaze back at Tsumiki after seeing that they were still snoring their heads off.

"I should probably go to sleep aswell, Tsumi-chan." You realize as you patted her head affectionately.

A small hand held on to the end of your uniform sleeve as you stood up. "Tsumiki?"

Her cute face turned red from embarrassment as she look at you shyly, "...Y/N, can you also sleep next to me?"

You internally coo. you could just die from the cuteness, you wanted to pinch her cheeks but you're sure that would just embarrass her further. She was like a little sister you always wanted to have.

"Of course, Ill just go take a quick shower and change."

She beams at your response and nods happily. She was so mature for her age, having to take care of Megumi that you sometimes forget that she's also still just a kid who also wants love and attention.

After a quick shower and a new set of comfy pajamas, you dragged your tired self back to Megumi and Tsumikis room only to find Tsumiki already sleeping. You smile fondly at the three people that took up so much space in your heart.

You pull the covers over Megumi and Satoru, tucking them both in before quietly sliding in next to Tsumiki, pressing a soft kiss on her forehead. The little girl small from curls into you. Your tired body and the late hour made sleep find you the moment your head met the pillow.

The early morning light hit your eyes, making you groan. You wanted to pull the covers over your eyes, but your movement was cut short when you notice warm air tickling down your neck, along with strong arms wrapped tightly around your waist, your back flushed against a sturdy chest, legs tangled on top of yours.

Unless Tsumiki turned into a big buff man overnight , this had to be..

"Satoru?"

Nothing. You crane your head to face him, unable to move anything else. There was no mistaking those long white eyelashes and smooth snow white hair, sunlight making him look like he had a halo. His pink and strangely always glossy lips curled into a small content smile. He looked so peaceful, it was almost a shame to wake him.

But honestly, when did he take Tsumiki's place beside you?

Speaking of, you glance to Megumi's bed and sure enough the two siblings are now sleeping there together. You let out an exasperated breath. The kids are gonna have a fit when they wake up. Yet you can't help but cover Gojo's hands with yours; wrapped tightly around your waist, squeezing them gently.

You did your best to maneuver your body so that you were facing him, eventually succeding. You noticed that he changed into a loose shirt and sweats. his natural scent made you tuck your face into his neck. Suddenly, he pulls you impossibly closer against him, making you giggle, Its like he was trying to hold you hostage.

"You awake, sweets?" His morning voice huskier than usual, making your stomach tingle.

"Hmm," You hum, curling into him more. He was so warm and solid, and as someone who gets cold so easily he has never missed any opportunity to pull you into him, using any excuse to have you close. (and of course he didn't want you to freeze.)

He mumbles a sleepy good morning along with a soft kiss on the top of your head which made your face warm, like it always does.

It was moments like these where you and Satoru tip toed around the boundaries of your friendship. And these days that thin line was turning non existent especially when things like this happen. It didn't matter to you though, you could get hurt later, regret it later, or things can go amazingly right later, but right now you wanted him close.

This wasn't news to you. From the moment you met him during that smoky bonfire two years ago, he had you overnight. Cerulaen blue eyes that reflected galaxies and sunrises over the burning fire, how could you resist? Ever since then you wanted him close and to your surprise he has always pulled you even closer.

"When did you take Tsumiki's place?" You mumble into his neck.

You feel him yawn before answering, "Around 3am.. I saw you next to her and I couldn't help it."

"Help what?"

"..You had your arms around her and stuff."

You pull back a little to look at his pouty face, sky blue eyes in slits. "You can't seriously be jealous of a child."

"Who says?"

"She's a child and a girl?"

"So?"

"You're impossible." You groan.

"You love me though." He whispers against your ear, making you jump in his hold.

You glare at him and push him as far as he'd allow which was barely an inch, "Stop teasing me."

He lets out a laugh, "Sorry, princess. Its just so fun to tease you."

Seeing your annoyed face, he pulled you back into him, tucking a strand of your surely messy hair behind you ear. "I wasn't joking about being jealous though. I wanted to be the one next to you."

Sky blue eyes gaze into your surpised ones, his so full of adoration and sincerity. Yes, his beauty always blows you away, but it was his honesty that overwhelmed you.

The intensity of his stare makes you hide into his chest. "Seriously, Toru.. We need to talk about this." You grumble, face warmer than ever.

He chuckles at your shyness, finding it so endearing. His arms tightened around you, pulling you flushed against his broad chest. "I know and we will. But for now, let me hold you close a little longer."

Meanwhile Megumi and Tsumiki under the covers.

"They're idiots." Megumi says dryly.

Tsumiki quickly shushes her little brother as she strains her ear to listen more, a huge grin on her face.

She couldn't wait to tell Shoko and Suguru about this.
