by now, there are a lot of theories about orange and i have my own, but it would be really interesting if orange was a relatively new side. think about it. all of the sides were formed sometime during thomas’s childhood, even remus. imagine if orange isn’t a basic necessary facet of thomas’s personality (like logic and emotion), but instead something that was newly formed due to thomas’s recent dilemmas and mental health issues. (by recent, i don’t mean RECENT recent, i just mean thomas’s adultery adulthood, instead of his childhood)

idk i think it would be really cool to see the formation of a new side, the factors that caused this formation, how that impacts thomas and the other sides, how it differs from a facet that was formed during his childhood, etc.

I wanna share a part of my orange theory If that’s okay!!! And it’s kinda out there, but in “Incomplete: The Puzzle Song”, they said “several sides you don’t know abt yet” but there was only 6 at that time (and currently) so, if several=7, and we already know six, we’re missing one. And if you count the rainbow (+indigo and violet) we’re only missing orange. So the orange side must be the final one. It also doesn’t help that blue and orange are complimentary colors. Ty for listening! -Ro!

It makes sense, considering the fact that the whole gang feels incomplete (pun intended) without someone more aggressive

My personal theory is that Orange is rage & aggression, and his main goal is to make sure Thomas and the others don't suppress him/their anger, because that can lead to very bad things

Which would also explain why he got to Logan first, because Logan suppresses his emotions (more specifically anger) more than any other side

Yes, we know Patton suppresses his emotions too, but he's suppressing sadness, not anger, which is why Orange never got to him

Virgil is also suppressing a different emotion, I'm still not 100% sure what, but it's clear to be less aggressive than rage

Roman is suppressing sadness and loneliness, still not anger

Janus is not really suppressing anything, as far as I can tell

And Remus is a whole 'nother theory

But that leaves us with Logan, who's suppressing his anger over not being listened to. This is why we only saw Orange "interact" with Logan, because Logan is what's fueling Orange right now.

MY NEW SIDE/ORANGE SIDE THEORY

I hear a lot of people saying that this new side has something to do with anger or being angry, but actually i don't think that's true- close though.

throughout the series Logan has been super insecure about having feelings, and insists that he's purely logical and doesn't have them. Anger just happens to be the emotion that's easiest for him to crack- if you were trying to get him to emote somewhat, prove that he isn't purely logical, that's just the easiest gateway because it's the emotion he cracks under the most.

And we see this new unknown side- or hints of him- in the episode about lee and mary lee's wedding, when patton is insecure about his status as morality and what to DO about the situation, or why Thomas is upset.

ROMAN has also been shown to feel inadequate and actually have a very bruised ego, and to become easily self conscious and worried about being the best or most loved side. He struggles to take criticism and has breakdowns over failing or being unpopular, second best, etc

I think, similar to how virgil is anxiety, this new side is connected to insecurity, inadequacy, falling short of who you're "supposed" to be, etc, and that remus and janus are using Logan's feelings about not wanting to feel (and his anger issues) to force Thomas to confront these issues.

it's not about anger really, it's just about every way that each side (and Thomas) feels they're falling short.

and Logan is a perfect gateway for bringing this all to the front (pun intended haha plural moment)

I HAVE A THEORY FOR ORANGE SANDERS!!!

So, as many of you know, the most common theory is that orange is anger, (I’ve heard instinct as well). BUT I have recently come up with another theory! So far all the dark sides have been pretty much the direct opposite of the light sides, as I’m sure you all know:

morality/sense of right -> deceit/ self preservation despite what is perceived as right or wrong

��Nice” creativity -> “bad” creativity (I know, Remus isn’t evil, but let’s face it, this is essentially what the other see him as)

logic -> anger? Well, anger isn’t really the opposite of logic. It’s just one emotion. And it doesn’t make sense that Thomas should have a side dedicated to only one emotion. Sure, we have Virgil, but he also represents many other things, leading into self preservation as well. So why would there be a side dedicated ENTIRELY to one emotion??? And instinct isn’t the opposite of logic. It’s instinctual that you shouldn’t touch a hot pan, but it’s also logical.

it doesn’t make sense! So may I present to you my newest theory:

ORANGE SANDERS IS EMOTION.

“what??? But that’s Patton!” Is he though?

Not once above does it say that Patton represents emotion. Yes, he is emotional, but not emotions. And I may be wrong, maybe they did say it at some point that he was the holder of emotion. But as far as I’m aware, Patton is only Thomas’ morals and sense of right and wrong.

So! What’s the opposite to logic? What is the bane of logic’s existence? What clouds logic?

EMOTION.

It isn’t just anger that clouds logic! Happiness, jealousy, love, and all sorts of other emotions do it as well!

if orange is to be the opposite of logic, then I believe he will be emotion.

“But it says above that Patton has been put against Logan!” Yes! But morals also cloud logic! Your morals might tell you it’s right to save an injured bear, but your logic would be screaming at you to run in the other direction!

i think most Orange theories fail to consider one important thing. Orange doesn't have to represent just one trait alone. he can be representative of multiple parts of Thomas's personality. literally all of the other sides represent at least two facets of Thomas's personality each.

Virgil is anxiety and vigilance. Roman is creativity and ego. Patton is morality and emotion. Logan is logic and learned knowledge (also the “primary overseer of Thomas's language center” as he put it himself). Janus is deceit and self-preservation. Remus is the only side who seems to represent one thing, and that's forbidden/dark creativity (and intrusive thoughts, but that would fall under the forbidden creativity category). there is a possibility that Remus represents something else that the series hasn't revealed yet.

so yeah, it's important to keep in mind that Orange can and probably does represent multiple facets of Thomas. and it's possible that one of these facets is going to be something helpful to Thomas, just like how vigilance and self-preservation explain how Virgil and Janus aren't completely evil and that they serve a purpose in Thomas's life. going back to my desperation theory, there's a possibility that Orange could represent something more positive, alongside desperation. catharsis, maybe?
