album reaction, let’s go

meet me in the hallway - haunting but beautiful verses with a very powerful chorus. i might’ve gotten this from tumblr, but it definitely sounds like it’s about some sort of drug addiction. either a real one, or someone being like a drug to him. either way, very interesting concept, and makes for a pretty damn good song.

sign of the times - i didn’t like this song when i first heard it bc i just expected more for a debut single, but it’s growing on me. it’s pretty. (honestly, only zayn has a great debut single so far of the 1d boys - i do love ‘just hold on’ but it doesn’t totally count bc it’s louis & steve, not louis on his own; who knows if that’ll change w/ liam’s single...)

carolina - so good. sounds very old school, like something i would hear on an old beatles or rolling stones record. definitely a favorite so far. (also, the title????? not-so-subtle nod to his bearding stunt with caroline flack?)

two ghosts - i can hear this as a 1d song. the background falsetto could easily be liam’s. 

also, the “same lips red / same eyes blue” lyric at the beginning could be misinterpreted by the media to be about taylor swift, but when he comes in with “same white shirt / couple more tattoos” it’s clear that it’s actually about louis. :) 

...is this about how they changed from doing stunts and being forced apart in public band outings? bc that’s the vibe i get from the chorus: “we’re not who we used to be / we’re two ghosts standing in the place of you and me” 

sweet creature - blackbird 2.0. such a contrast between this and the last song. a song that breaks your heart followed by one of the sweetest love songs i’ve heard since mcfly’s “love is easy”. 

also, if anyone follows me on twitter, i’ve already said this, but: with the two sounds of the verses and the chorus, this song is like if “blackbird”-era beatles and hozier had a baby. (no specific hozier song comes to mind for this comparison, but if you’ve listened to his debut album, you’ll know what i’m talking about.)

only angel - this sounds... misplaced. not “it doesn’t belong on the album” misplaced, but “why wasn’t this track #1″ misplaced. it would have made an amazing opener. at least should be the opening song of his tour. also, i can hardly understand some of the lyrics, but i can tell you one thing 

chorus-wise, the lyrics (when i could finally hear/understand them) give me that same vibe as “good girls” by 5sos. aka the “she may look like she’s sweet but she’s actually a freak” sorta thing. or, angel in the streets / devil in the sheets, basically. also gives me the “this might be about taylor swift” vibe. 

please make this a single, harry. it’d be an awesome summer rock anthem and i can already picture how the music video can go. (feel free - and you are encouraged! - to ask me about that)

kiwi - wow, entertainment weekly was right - the songs prior to these two (this + only angel) sound like openers to the main act. holy fucking shit, harry.

initially, i would say this is definitely about taylor and how batshit crazy she is. like a response to “blank space”, except talking about the reality that is that b****. especially with the mention of new york and “she’s such an actress”, like, come on.

but then of course there’s the repeated “i’m having your babies” thing and, okay, that’s weird. first i thought it was maybe about the fans being crazy but he’s “into it”, but i can see the fandom twisting it into a babygate thing. probably works either way.

(but then i read that the song was first written as a joke, so maybe i shouldn’t read so much into it. still a great song aside from all the lyrical analysis.)

ever since new york - i might be in the minority here but i actually like the studio version of this better. the live version didn’t do it for me, i could hear his vocals on the verses very well.

this is what everyone would expect to be about taylor, but i don’t know. i get another “alluding to the effects of bearding on his and louis’ relationship” vibe. but yeah, that’s just me.

definitely a beautiful folksy song. like sott, i didn’t like it that much the first time i heard it (for this, that was obviously the live version on snl), but now i’m quite liking it. it’s very... chill. :) (like something you can probably hear in a coffee shop or panera.)

woman - i want to have sex to this song. lol, sorry for being blunt, but that’s my first thought on this - people will be having sex to this for years. 

i know this song is about his tendency to be jealous, but, it’s not actually about a woman, is it? the chorus gives no other allusions as to what the song is about besides repeating the same word over and over again, so... it’s about louis, isn’t it, harry?

from the dining table - another beatles/hozier lovechild but with a brutal sense of honesty. (did he just open a song talking about masturbating? not saying that it’s bad, but, you never hear that discussed in mainstream songs...)

instrumentally, this sounds like something i can hear during an episode of this is us. lyrically, well... he wrote an entire album about louis. goddammit, harry.

final thoughts: definitely what i expected to hear from solo harry. every song is tailored to his exact style (*ba dum tss*), while each is still unique in its own way. true, there were a lot of repeat comparisons, but he just channels a lot of the same artists in various songs. doesn’t mean the songs themselves sound a like.

honestly, i want to give the album a 9/10. it was very, very good. beautiful but melody-wise and lyrically. i would love to give it a 10/10, but that would make it a golden album in my book, and i can’t do that. the only golden album in my book is bastille’s bad blood/all this bad blood, and harry’s debut doesn’t come close to its perfection. still a pretty damn good album, if i do say so myself. it’s got me crawling back into the 1d fandom again, that’s for sure.

Plague Steve: The fizz comes from carbonic acid in the water, splitting up into Co2 and H2O over time. The carbonic acid is, as an acid, sour. By adding milk to sour water you’ve created a very convincing emulation of spoiled milk so I’ll believe in a heartbeat that the taste is not great.

Faceless: I have mastered the potion “instant spoiled milk”, therefore earning the rank of crappiest alchemist currently alive.
