If I say Achilles is gay is not because I think he exclusively likes men it's because making any woman go through that should be considered misogynistic by itself

if things came down t it, what would you choose? kidnapping patroclus' dogs or accepting tsoa patroclus as the only canon patroclus?
I am kidnapping those dogs myself in every universe
I loved tsoa as a novel, but I won't lie when I say I was disappointed when I saw some of the character's characterizations. Thetis being an unbearable mom despite being the one to preserve and protect Patroclus' body in the iliad. Deidameia... she was just ruined tbh and it makes me very sad.
But on Patroclus, I read the book expecting some scenes showing Patroclus' skills in combat despite repeatedly saying "he can't fight" but he was just a medic and nothing else. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing they made him a medic, but I'm kinda disappointed that they took his badassery, considering what he did in book 16. He can still be kind-hearted and fierce at the same time imo
It may be from his POV, but damn it really warped some people's view on him as a character, confusing the events of tsoa to the iliad

I think one of the problems of retellings like TSOA is that they can make people who are not familiar with the original texts believe that their knowledge gasps are being faithfully filled.
Greek myths are famous enough for people to be aware of the main plots, but not enough to know the details, e.g how the stories were told, how the words were used, what was the context, etc. So when retellings appear, and at the same time being advertised as “providing closer look/ filling the gasps” (I blame this more on the advertisement), they can easily accept these retellings as a universal truth. I have seen ads and a Greek Myth knowledge page confirm some very dumb shit thank you.
Moreover, old stories are tended to be told in 3rd POV and with little scenes describing inner turmoils, readers can interpret them in whatever way they deem fit, which included readers who then become retelling writers.
Yes the main plots are not changed, but interpretations of the things happened in between can vary from person to person
Read whatever you like, just remember whether the ones you read is a retelling or not.
P.S. this thing is more apparent and problematic for example in my country, where the original Iliad has one translation, is expensive af while TSOA is marketed a faithful retellings i.e follows the main plot line.

King of Opus AU:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We knew each other in a different timeline, but not like this.
Okay so this is the AU I was thinking about.
So basically what if Menoetius exiled Patroclus with a raft out into the Aegean Sea. I want him to have his own mini Odyssey moment out there. Anyway he washes up near Troy and is taken under the wing of Hector. Things progress as they do with the Iliad, however Hector and his squad (with Pat) successfully burn the ships and surround the Kings, capturing all but Odysseus, who narrowly escapes.
As a reward for his efforts, Patroclus is given a number of men to dethrone his father and take Opus for himself. Pat could kill Achilles, however, Phthia and Opus are allies and his intel on Opus is much valuable.
So yeah that's it! Patroclus getting revenge for what happened to him and it's all angsty. I haven't got it all fleshed out...

because it was Ancient Greek times, imagine Achilles running away after kissing Patroclus wondering about their love - “Would our love be a different name? Would our love burn as much as true love? Is it the same?”
Like, would he ponder on his love for Patroclus?

That part in tsoa when Patroclus finds out about Briseis' feelings for him and tells Achilles it's the funniest shit ever bc it's the first time in life Achilles has experienced jealousy and it's towards an Anatolian girl for having an uterus. My man was tb some "she wants to have a child with you" like that shit was eating bro from the inside out already lmaoooo
"is she pregnant?" Bro was ready to kill himself 😭😭😭

ok I have a question
Near the end of song of Achilles it’s very implied that some sorta of god possessed Patroclus in some way to make him fight and keep fighting made him mad)in the crazy way).
idk who would though I have theories(some don’t even involve the gods) but still thinking of the implications my only two options I think are possible are:
ares-god of war shit
or
thetis- she wants him dead and her son to be known for good things
but there are so many flaws in both of those and I need some others thoughts on this

Like i get disliking thetis in tsoa for being different than she is in the myths but people saying she is written as unsympathic really makes me wonder if we read the same book because I found her an extremly complex, interesting and sympathetic character, and people hating her for being mean feels like a case of "people say they want complex female characters until a female character is actually complex and or mean". Imo thetis's character arc is the most well written one in tsoa and seeing people say she is written as unsympathetic or the mm's writing of her is mysoginistic makes me go "did we read the same book?"
