My prediction for TSATS
Tumblr media
(As in Nico makes a good decision and upon realizing he is a good person capable of doing good things he passes out on the spot in Tartarus (hopefully in ghost Jason’s arms))

I’m in no way bashing on people who have already finished TSatS and say they hate it, are disappointed, etc., because I myself have not gone past chapter seven. My friend let me read some today, but I won’t have my own copy until Thursday, so maybe my opinions will change. I will say, however, that if you read 400+ pages in less than a day, maybe give yourself some time to process the entire plot first?
In any case, I can’t help but wonder how many people went into this book expecting one version of Nico and Will, only to be hit with something else entirely. And I mean like... expecting the fandom’s versions of these two, rather than what canon has previously shown us up until this book.
It’s my personal opinion that the PJO fandom’s worse enemy is their own mischaracterization of the characters at times. And I don’t mean like little head canons and stuff. Everyone has done those at some point. There’s usually no harm in those. I’m talking about people who created their own versions of Nico and Will and have been running with these visions for years through different fan fictions and what-not online.
For years we’ve known basically nothing about Will aside from the fact that he’s sarcastic, likes Star Wars, his mom is a country singer, he can glow in the dark, and he’s better at healing than fighting. (And he has questionable fashion choice at times). Like, that’s all we’ve had since his initial introduction in The Last Olympian over a decade ago. Everything else? Online and fan speculation. And again, there is nothing wrong with that! I just feel like a lot of people went into this book holding onto their own pre-conceived visions of what Will Solace was and ended up disappointed the authors made him... different? But not really different, because he didn’t have a lot of in-depth personality or backstory before this.
Me personally? Yeah, I’m not that far into the book yet but I’m loving how Will is portrayed so far. He’s still sarcastic, but he’s shown his fair share of level-headedness as well as frustrations just within the first couple chapters. He is in no way the overly-optimistic sunshine-y boy who only exists to help Nico that the fandom has portrayed him to be all these years. His character arc is already headed in a way deeper direction (more on that when I finish the book). The whole bit where Will had coffee spilled on him and spent the next couple paragraphs in the scene trying to be unbothered while actually giving off “This is fine” fire dog energies? I loved that.
As for Nico, can I just say I adore how he’s written in this book? Aside from his PoV in Blood of Olympus, this is the first time he’s had his own narration. And it’s actually about him and more in-depth than previous times. I’ve heard people say that he’s “out of character,” and while I can see a little of what they’re all saying, I just want to know... what version of Nico have you all been reading? Did I miss something?
Up until this book, what exactly did we know about Nico? That he’s displaced in time, his sister and mother are both dead (and he feels alone), he harbored repressed gay feelings from his upbringing as a Catholic guy in 1940s Italy, and he’s been through the ringer more than once (so, trauma, basically). Oh, and he’s a bit of a nerd (Mythomagic and knowing all kinds of ancient creatures). That’s... about it. Everything has been speculation and projection from fans.
In previous books he’s always been portrayed from first- or third-person point of view (usually from people who don’t know him well and just think he’s “creepy”), leading to the idea that he’s distant and low-empathy based on some interactions he’s had with demigods who weren’t thrilled to be around him, during a time of great pressure. But he’s not exactly uncaring. He’s been shown to care a lot, actually (Bianca, Hestia, Bob, everything he’s done for Percy, his friendship with Reyna, Hazel, etc.)
But what about when he was ten? He was an excitable, curious kid who liked to have fun. And what did we see briefly in Trials of Apollo (before Jason died, at least)? We saw some of that energy return, particularly in The Hidden Oracle.
So, yeah, I’m personally thrilled to see him making cringe-y jokes and have some self-deprecating humor. It’s very “#OnBrand” for a traumatized teenager who’s just trying to cope and live life without any godly wars forcing him this way and that. Can we really say it’s “out of character” if we’ve never seen more than one side of Nico? (The under pressure side, from other character’s PoVs, in books not about him where he’s basically been a side character?) I’m just glad to see him cracking jokes, laughing, and acting more like a normal kid.
Now, is this book different from Rick’s other ones? Uh, yeah. I won’t say it’s not. But it’s not bad. It’s supposed to be different. It has slightly different intentions than the other books (re: explicitly working through trauma and relationship bumps). Also, it’s co-written. Co-written books always read slightly off from the original author’s work, but dam if it isn’t hard to meld writing styles and copy another author’s particular voice. But I think Mark did a very good job at imitating Rick’s style (again, from what I’ve read so far).
Will I change my mind on all this the farther I get into the book? Maybe. There’s a lot to read and take in. All I’m saying is don’t let the negative reviews warp your opinion of the book if you haven’t read it yet and are on the fence if you should or not. Wait for the PDF to drop, or for a library copy, and read and see for yourself.

Ok I know everyone’s tsats predictions are like “oh Nico’s gonna die” or “oh Will’s gonna die” or “Nico will lose his powers” or something like that
But you do realize this is literally just gonna be an overtly gay greek mythified version of Dante’s Inferno right?

My TSATS theories.
1) Mr.D will have an important role (cause it seems he is the child in that article and also he is clearly fond of Nico)
2) Hades will meet Will, and approve. As Will will bring some sunlight for Persophone, even she may warm upto him
3) Apollo will help (he can’t have a whole human redemption arc just to be totally ignored)
4) the Apollo shrine in Tartarus will play an important role
5) There is some bigger conspiracy at play, it’s not just one person tricking Nico, it’s someone’s plan (maybe Nyx) to want to escape
6) There are going to be some parallels with the OG pjo book.
7) King Minos will appear
8) Story about how Nico and Will started getting close, how Nico started accepting himself
9) some flashback / interaction with Nico and Percy
10) I am worried that either Will or Nico will have to give up memories
11) Reyna and the hunters will make an appearance
12) Nico will spot some major issues with underworld justice system.. as in soem souls in Tartarus that shouldn’t be there. Punishments being too hard for the crimes etc.
13) Hades being good parent
14) Nico wanting to be more involved in helping Hades

Extremely Dumb TSATS Predictions before the book comes out and ruins my fun:
When Mark Oshiro says people’s predictions are not close I had the urge to go out on a limb and think of just the wildest things then.
Jason will be in it and he will not get along with WIll
Will was working alongside Cupid this whole time and Nico’s relationship with him was a concoction by the two of them . The voice calling Nico from Tartarus is Cupid .
Nico went back into Tartarus by himself already, the whole time he dreamed up everytthing past BoO
It turns out Will was a memory that Nico concocted to deal with the trauma of Jason’s death and he never existed
Akhlys willactually come to Nico’s rescue
Chiron and Mr. D will announce they are married
Unlike percabeth who are even closer after Tartarus, this will break Solangelo up. And that’s the thing they exchange or whatever re the prophecy. Sometimes the real power is the boyfriend we lost along the way.
Actual Percy Jackson will make an appearance. Saying something like he’s Nico’s older brother and Nico will die on the spot
Nico will die.
Will will die.
Bob will die?
Jason will come back. And then die again
Bob has taken over Tartarus and it’s nice now, he’s just calling Nico for help setting up for a party.
Aforementioned party gives Nico anxiety but Will is excited and will be very helpful
It might actually be good and fix all the problems with Canon execution of Solangelo
I might read it

I'm calling it right here:
Jason's gonna come back to life, at the cost of Hiss-Majesty sacrificing himself.
I don't know, I have a feeling he's gonna die, it's something itching in my bones and not in a good way. With the fact that it never gets cleared up what happened with Jason's spirit, this is the conclusion I've some to.

Ok. So. I just remembered that when a star dies, it explodes, sending enormous energy and materials into space. The explosion is called Supernova, and in that instance, the star can shine as bright as even a galaxy with billions of regular stars.
So. If Rick's really planning to astound me, let me see Nico cross the border of life and death only to emerge then as the most stunning, gorgeous existence this universe has to offer.
Or Will. The sun is a star anyway. I'm not picky about it.

ANOTHER THING I COULD SCOURGE FROM THE TEASER
Tumblr media
“Nico’s heart sank. Will’s grip (was) very weak. Nico had to do this. He had to [unintelligible] (die) [unintelligible]”
And I think that says something about Orpheus’ toe???
WHATTTT OH MY GOD I AM SO EXCITED

I saw people post about how Mark said that none of the predictions are true, and everyone else is making up the most batshit crazy predictions, so I’m joining in cause it seems fun.
- Will is a made up entity from Tartarus that was meant to lure Nico down there again
- Will is a legacy of some god idk I didn’t think that far
- I think the goat in the new book is gonna be the one that’s non binary or satyr centaur, I can’t remember
- Eyo is the God Hypnos? Like the one the goat babysitter is supposed babysit (idk I just suddenly thought of it)
-Bianca will appear to Nico, but it’s gonna be a trap
- Will is gonna fly through a window at some point of the book
- Nico learns to drive
- Will is gonna learn to light travel ig
- Nico will turn into a shadow
- idk if he’ll come back but whatever
- there’s gonna be an epic running scene in Tartarus
- Will sees or there’s just a vision of Octavian cutting open a stuffy and giving them a death sentence, or an actual clue
- Jules Albert will be the one to press the button for the elevator
- Bob will start a pet shop if he makes it out
- the trogs are gonna help them in Tartarus
- Will is a creation made by the Gods
- that’s why he seems like he has charmspeak
I’m never doing this again, what are these, why am I so bad at this

I feel like the lil nas x joke in tsats is going to be when they get to the door of Orpheus and Will makes a joke about singing a Lil Nas x song. And Nico doesn't know who that is and doesn't know why Will is laughing about it

People who say Nico seems OOC in TSATS forget the pre Trauma Nico.. they forgot what a complete geek he was in Titan’s curse!geeking out over mythomagic, so of course he will geek out over Pokémon and Star Wars and everything pop culture.
It was the trauma which was making him change, but he is finally healing, he is going back to the the little geek he used to be. And I am here for it!!

Wait wait wait what if, ok, hold on
If Octavian is the one using Bob's voice (or like, teaming up with Bob) to get Nico and Will to come down there, what if, instead of just proper funeral rites and being able to move on from being a ghost, he wants to be resurrected because now that he's dead, he's been able to reflect and feel the guilt that comes with hurting so many people, so he wants to get a second chance at life to fix his mistakes.
And he's convinced Bob to go wherever he goes, so the only way to rescue Bob is to bring Octavian along, and Nico and Will's first fight is spurred on by this dilemma:
Nico hates Octavian because he blackmailed his sister and treated her terribly, but loves Bob enough to overpower that grudge. Besides, as bad as Octavian is, Nico doesn't think he deserves to be down here, because nobody deserves to be down here.
Will's never been here before, and more than that, doesn't see Tartarus for what it is, doesn't grasp the incomprehensible cosmic horror of being trapped inside of a primordial's body. And he doesn't know Bob, in fact, has never met him until now. So he's perfectly willing to let Octavian rot down here, because he was a hater, a traitor, and a full-blown dictator.
Of course, they eventually resolve this issue, but only because Nico brings up the fact that Bob could die any moment if he stays down here, and if he dies, his new personality dies with him, leaving only the ruthless Iapetus, who could potentially find his own way out of here, and try to destroy the world yet AGAIN. And he's so angry about the fact that he had to resort to threats of armageddon to convince Will not to abandon Bob, because like... Bob is Nico's friend. And he needs his help. Why isn't that enough?
Will starts picking on him for being all pale and sickly looking, and Nico jumps in to defend him because he's ALSO pale and sickly looking, and Will's like 'what the here I thought you hated this guy' but Octavian is being just as aggressive towards Will out of bitter jealousy for Will and Apollo's relationship but he won't admit that, so Nico jumps in to defend HIM because 'that's my boyfriend you jerk' so now he's basically like 'IF YOU TWO DON'T STOP BICKERING BACK THERE, I WILL TURN THIS CAR AROUND'
Will and Nico's relationship eventually gets mended with the power of communication and a lot of soft, tender moments in a cruel, vicious place, and Will actually starts to bond with Octavian, pretty much out of obligation because like... He's family. Bob basically plays bodyguard, and they're able to escape, seemingly scott-free.
Seemingly.
Because when they return to the surface with Octavian, and he tries to go back to camp Jupiter, Hazel's in charge. She's understandably angry, and banishes him from New Rome for the rest of his days. Which she has every right to do.
But she can't even look at Nico. Can't even speak to him. She just stands up from her throne and walks away, feeling wounded, feeling betrayed.
And at that moment, Nico realizes what he had to sacrifice.
His sister. Her love, her respect... His welcome on her turf. He will never be allowed to enter New Rome again.
And it breaks his heart again. Just when he thought it was so broken, that it couldn't get any more broken. He thought it was safe. But it somehow finds a new way to break.

DUMB TSATS predictions before the book comes out and ruins my fun PART 2!!!
1. Nico dies and either Jason or Will has to do trials of Orpheus to get him back
2. Nico becomes a god, and thats the thing he has to lose or whatever re: the prophecy
3. Alabaster will be in it, whether as a protagonist, antagonist or anti-hero, he will be a PROBLEM (and effectively the third party in the quest for a bit)
4. Lou Ellen Will introduce Alabaster to Will and Nico bc they need to learn to mist travel into the underworld and that unfortunately only Al knows how to do. Even though Lou is head of Hecate kids.
5. When Alabaster sees Will and Nico he says he doesn’t like “the creepy one” and it becomes apparent as he describes him that he is referring to Will. “He smiles too much, looks fake, don’t trust him” . Lou is confused by this.
6. This observation sparks an old fight between Will and Nico and how Will doesn’t understand how people perceive Nico as creepy.
7. Al will watch this interaction with interest because he “doesn’t have a television”. Lou will tell him he needs to gain back some social skills
8. Alabaster will mist travel them in a pinch just as Nico gets the hang of it and it throws them all off.
9. Alabaster, Nico and Will travel through the underworld. Al and Will bicker about things (most notably about whether Lotr or Star Wars is the better trilogy)
10. Al and nico have a conversation about saving dead friends. Al says his “heroes never die” line and Nico retorts with a smirk that “we’re Greek that’s all our heroes do”
11. They meet Ethans ghost. The ghost of Ethan also calls Will Creepy, and Al has a heartfelt moment where Ethan tells him that he needs to forgive himself. Al still stubborn doesn’t listen and insists that Ethan should leave with him as a mistform. Ethan asks Al whether he’d do it all again, knowing now that Ethan had turned at the last moment.
12. Will says something to affect about not being able to stop death bc he has unaddressed survivor guilt he’s projecting.
13. Nico does not like this, because he kinda agrees with Al (doesn’t want to address the fact that he’s been thinking about Jason and whether he could save him)
14. They get attacked before Al can finish his convo with Ethan’s ghost. Alabaster has to fend off the threat to give Will and Nico time to get into Tartarus. He says his silly “heroes never die” line ans charges off. Nico calls after him “We’re Greek! That’s like all heroes do!” (This time crying instead of smirking).
15. Will and Nico get to Tartarus and are captured by whatever that thing is bc they think they’re saving Bob. Nico gets to say a bad word as a treat.
16. Bob actually saves them, and Nico asks why he was calling for help. He reveals it wasn’t him. Nico listens and hears another call. He follows it without checking if Will is with him.
17. Isolated Nico gets barraged by the “Listen” warning and Nico finds that it was Akhlys using a “Jason puppet” to lure Nico to her.
18. It’s not a puppet and when this is somehow revealed and Nico says they have to go save Jason.
19. Some sort of battle or showdown with the actual villain whether it’s Akhlys or if Akhlys is working with/for someone else likely the Other Titans . Bob is injured but gets his old memories back. And has to deal with reconciling his new and old friendships
20. When it seems like everything is lost. And Bob has decided to be on their side even tho they are probably all gonna die down in Tartarus. Alabaster returns with a ghost army of purgatory Titan supporters and save Nico and company (alabaster uses this save as definitive proof that Lotr is the superior trilogy as he has in essence “pulled an Aragorn”)
21. Will let’s him have the win, but adds Al could be a son of Apollo with how dramatic he is.
22. Al comments that that would make them brothers.
23. Will cringes and says “I’d rather die”
24. Jason’s ghost is freed. Nico has to actually deal with the fact that he died as well as the fact that he was ignoring that he had feelings for him. Will hears this part.
24. Alabaster has to see all his Titan army friends going off to Elysium bc it’s revealed he somehow got that deal for them for helping Nico. He doesn’t want them to leave bc he doesn’t want to be the sole survivor again but he has to deal with that.
25. Will can’t heal Bob, who is extremely wounded . Will has to deal with that.
26. Essentially all three of them get to deal with their own special flavor of survivor’s guilt. Nico with the they died bc I wasn’t there/couldn’t help them. Will with the i did everything I could to help them and they died anyway and Alabaster with the “it’s my fault they’re dead”kind the thing that is lost is whatever defense mechanism each was using to deal with those traumas
27. This post will not get as much attention as the other one bc it not as funny or amusing (or brief)
28. I might just write the above as a fanfic
I have been thinking about this all way too much you guys. Sorry not sorry.
