musing on the rooms of the companions

i didn't want to put it in my main post since none of it is confirmed, but here's my take on it:

emmrich's room:

the statue echoes the one of the grand necropolis

the incense burners & lamps mirror the one he had in the trailer

the myriad of skulls in the shelves at the back

the many vials and potion bottles that he's also pictured with in his concept art

2. neve's room

the teal pops of colour just like in her outfits

the very tevinter style of architecture + aesthetic

tevinter heraldry (dragon) on decor / lamps

the huge crime investigation cork board behind the desk complete with several pieces of thread connecting maps and clues and sketches of people

prosthetic leg at the left hand side near the sideboard

3. davrin's room

grey warden crest

a plethora of swords and shields

4. bellara's room

same head of a statue as in her concept art

magical / elvhen artefacts + spheres

colour scheme choes her outfit

lots of triangles hanging from the ceiling, which have been part of her design nearly everywhere from her earrings to her armour

appears to have one of the halla statues you can collect at the winter palace in inquisition

5. taash's room

lots of dragon trophies / statues / paraphernalia from horns to sketches to wooden statues, v fitting for a dragon hunter

what surprises me is the amount of nug statues

lots of scrolls, maybe contracts or tallies/debts

6. harding's room

harding was described as a "romantic" and as someone who "loves nature"

rooms reflects that with lots of plants, a open water pool, lots of warm and natural light

has an outdoors feel to it, fitting for a former scout

which leaves...

7. lucanis's "room"

i assume it's a pantry? or a storeroom for food?

there doesn't seem to be anything personal here at all, which is perhaps fitting for someone who is both described as an assassin and as a workaholic, but it still surprised me to see just how barren his living space is, with no trace of himself seemingly, apart from a nondescript cot set up in the back

mamma mia here i go again with another chapter from my leander thesis 🤓 please accept my humble input on mc's curse, the importance of reading between leander's flirting lines and rss's wonderful storytelling details.

ngl when i finally chose not to touch leander's hand first (can you blame me, i'm weak for that man) i was bewildered at how strikingly different the options in this scene play out, and i, strange as it seems, like this one much better.

first of all, it's a parallel (even if it's not intended, the connection is still there) to the opening scene with a deranged traveler: the touch, the sensations, the (foreshadowed) strangling:

leander is definitely affected by the curse — possessed even, i would say, as if he was being told to strangle mc. notice how his actions line up with the traveler's, only in slo-mo, because leander was fighting to take back the control. and when mc calls out for him, he either snaps out of it or gets to the exact point when he takes a hold of the curse. this brings up a question: could mc's curse be sentient? alter the minds, you say? (more under the cut because it got long)

i've seen people speculating that mc's curse might bestow the enlightment but that's not true: mc was told that (and that's why this origin has me by the throat (pun absolutely intended): imagine living with so much guilt, thinking you were doing good, but in fact driving people mad… mmm tasty). it ties perfectly into every origin path where mc was being lied to, deceived and betrayed. however, there's definitely something more to the curse's nature that's yet to be disclosed.

my favourite moment though!! is this nuanced character storytelling!!

the very hand that was inches away from choking mc to death is quickly disguised as caring and soothing. wonder why? to gain mc's trust (non-verbally), to show that leander's in control, he's strong, he's there for mc, he'll take care of them. of course, leander, being a leander, downplays the whole experience of being possessed/affected by the curse, but he's being honest at once. he doesn't lie to mc — and that's also how he's gaining trust, verbally this time.

one more question that begs to be asked: why the hell all of this doesn't happen if mc touches leander first? it seems that the quality of the touch (😭) also plays an important role here:

leander must have felt the power of the curse, but he wasn't possessed by it, he could control it right away — why? because the touch was fleeting? or because it was mc who was touching him, not the other way round?

now hear me out (i might be wrong on this one, because i can't remember any more examples off the top of my head, but i feel like it's definitely a thing. let me know if something comes up!): we should pay closer attention to how leander says the truth (or half-truth), but it could be understood differently at a flirting angle (it's slightly different from this one, where he covers up his misstep). what i think he means here is that he controls the curse, but it sure is a difficult thing to do. "not due to your power" my ass, his need to look strong and heroic and weak at the same time is ridiculous, someone cure this man (ivolunteer.gif)

one more and last thing that's bothering me (it might play into the previous point btw): if you keep touching him, he tells mc that fissures on their hands match his golden pin. why??????? that's such a dumb thing to flirt about, such a weird comparison. what kind of connection is there? it's so out of place, it definitely means something more. leander spill

Thanks @jaynovz for tagging me! Now I'm convinced you can smell weakness new WIPs brewing.

I organized my WIP folder this week and shoved some stuff into a sad little "abandoned" folder. There is still an embarrassing amount laying around here. Unfortunately for me, I also gave more descriptive titles to a lot of these.

I'm in an interesting place rn where a lot of the plot bunnies I'm excited about aren't in a WIP phase yet, but I'm also just trying to get back to my usual writing speed and trying not to be too hard on myself. So I suspect in the next weeks there will be more WIPs added that I will finish sooner than the ones on the list. I know some of these will be sitting in my WIP folder for months to come lol But I wanted to include all because if I'm forced to post a snippet then I might just figure out what I liked about them in the first place!

RULES: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.

On a side-note: in this manic episode of organizing, I've been trying to save a back up copy of my AO3 fics in the nice PDF format you can download from there. But I think AO3 is rate limiting the download function bc I could only download a handful of fics each day... So I guess this is going to be a process...

MR12: Many formerly incarcerated individuals face technological barriers upon release. How might correctional facilities better prepare them for digital reintegration, and why is this important for success in the modern world?

Technology has become so integrated in our everyday lives, that for people who are incarcerated are sadly left behind. This is a problem because people out in the free world use phones, computers, etc. to do things as simply as ordering food, and as importantly as applying for jobs. Allowing incarcerated people to have more access to technology would be a huge step in digital reintegration, and it would allow them to work on their social skills, self-esteem, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society. In a way, having a lack of access to technology, in theory, could be considered an infringement on human rights=ts just because we use the internet for literally everything, and it is a vital tool to stay in contact with everyone. If inmates don’t have the skills, even if it is just the basics, to navigate a technology advanced world, they just simply won’t make it, and this will unfortunately result in recidivism. Some changes to improve the digital age in prison would be for policymakers to incorporate some laws, or wardens bringing in some new ideas that involve inmates having more access to the digital age. Even if it is just for a few hours a day, that can go a long way when it is finally time for inmates to be released back into society. At least they will have a little bit more of a chance to try and apply for some jobs online, and be able to navigate the internet and use it to its fullest capacity.

This concept goes so hard op what like how dare you. People in the notes are cooking !!

My proposal: Pearl in Secret. What’s this? She’s isolated and villainized again and all the angst you can get out of that. Except now she knows the wickedness that’s about to happen, so she is bringing tragedy with her on purpose. Does she let the Wither Warden fight happen knowing Mumbo dies in it? That’s her Mounder! And Gem’s boogeyman apocalypse after, when she comes knocking on Trader Scar’s does Pearl fend her off or join on purpose, potentially rewriting the 2v1 betrayal by further muddying which side “The Victor” character chooses? Is she nicer to Lizzie, understanding what it’s like to be alone and knowing all it takes is one ally, perhaps helping her assassinate Scott and change the timeline? Does she even choose a side in the finale, letting G&TS v Mounders happen and cleaning up stragglers?

Something about Pearl who got blamed for everything wrong that happened in DL, now responsible by proxy for the horrors in SL that she’s not stopping. Something about how her and Scar were already horribly paralleled and connected in SL canon, and at the end they’re facing off again. Does she let him win there, even though she’d have to loop again? Does she still care?

Other swap rotating in my head: Scott in Wild, power duo’d yet again and reaping the fully realized benefits of a Gem team, like he always wanted but now he doesn’t have to sacrifice lives to achieve. And to be enemies with Pearl, but this time on behalf of someone else’s grievance. Is he cruel to the Bamboozlers, potentially cutting off that powerful pseudo alliance? Oh, and the potential around a Cleo alliance despite their teammates beef, doubled by Joel being opposed to him along with Pearl.

Life Series AU concept:

Swapping the victors. They wake up in a previous series, but at the base/ in the alliance of another victor, with the victor they're taking the place of in their alliance and base.

They have to win the series in the position and with the ruleset the other victor won in to escape.
