I can still remember the one time at my parents evening when the teacher told my mum I was being bullied. It was a shock both to her and to me. I wasn't aware I was being bullied nor that I needed help for it. 😐

Book of the Week: 10/10 - 10/16

For my premiere Book of the Week, I chose a book that could be taken many different ways, depending on who reads it. First off, all things mentioned in this post are my personal opinions. If I say anything that sounds offensive, please know that I’m not trying to be problematic and please don’t flood my inbox with complaints.

The book I read was An Infinite Number of Parallel Universes by Randy Ribay. This book explores many topics that in 2016, aren’t as much of a huge deal to most people. The book debuts from the point of view of Archie, a senior in high school who is less than enthused to live with his father and switch schools away from his band of fellow nerds and misfits. His parents divorced due to a surprise coming out on his father’s part. Archie has trouble wrapping his head around the fact that his father is homosexual. Because the book is told through multiple points of view, it’s only right to leave off on some sort of a cliff hanger for each character for each chapter that they narrate. Next up, we have Mari. The love interest of the main protagonist, Mari is unaccepted because she is a black girl raised by a white family. Her problem in the story is that her adoptive mom has been diagnosed with breast cancer and wants her adopted daughter to know of her birth mother. As per the law, her mother gives her an unopened letter addressed to Mari the day she was born. Mari is a writer and often orchestrates the quests behind the group’s weekly D&D gatherings. Moving on to the next of a few ethnically diverse characters, we meet Dante. HIs introduction may have given him the impression of typical black guy. Tall, a minority in his high school, he even works at a fried chicken place, much to his chagrin. As if to be in even more of a minority, he is also gay and unwillingly in the closet from his heavily Christian family until a twist throws a wrench into the machine. Last of all is Sam. Sam is Filipino and the only one of the group who is in a relationship in the start of the book. His girlfriend having upgraded from best friend years before, has hidden a secret from Sam that will cause him to chase her across the country with Archie, Mari, and Dante in tow. Join the group as they travel cross country and pick up (literally) some strange friends and visit odd places in the pursuit of the perfect last days of unity between senior year and college. I recommend this book to someone who is sitting alone in their room during the summer, maybe in the same age the protagonists are who have just come to seek a legend to leave.
