Trygve Seim and Frode Haltli share sustained notes and drones on their new album Our Time, which is sometimes redolent of the bal-musette and other times more misty or far-flung like on ‘Arabian Tango’ and ‘Improvisation No. 2 / Shyama Sundara Madena Mohana’. The accordion might sound like a distant train whistle but the mood here is never mechanical, like a phantom steam engine with billowing features that moves as though suspended from its tracks, before wafting up into the air in one thick curlicue of smoke. Sometimes those two sides, vaporous and fanciful, come together to magical effect like through the short puffs and tremolos at the close of ‘Improvisation No. 1 / Fanfare’ where Seim’s soprano saxophone soars to aching heights.

サクソフォーンの芳醇な響き TRYGVE SEIM 「DIFFERENT RIVERS」

ノルウェー出身のサクソニスト、トリグヴェ・セイムは、同郷のヤン・ガルバレクとともにすでにサックス界の大御所といっても差し支えないのかもしれません。

現代気鋭のトランペット奏者、アルヴェ・ヘンリクセンと組んだ今作「Different Rivers」はECMのリリースの中でも、ジャズファンは聞き逃すことのできない屈指の名盤の一つとなっています。

このアルバムで白眉の出来と言っても差し支えないのが「Breath」という楽曲。といいますかこれは音楽史に残るべき名曲であるとはっきり断言しておきたい。 なぜなら、聴いて鳥肌の立つほど美しい曲に出会うというのは人生でもそうそう味わえない稀有な体験で、それこそ人生にとっての大きな財産のひとつだからです。大見得切って言うと、この曲を聴くためだけにこのアルバムを買っても後悔はしないでしょう。 この「Breath」では、サックス、トランペット、そして、フレンチホルンが和音を順々に重ねていき、そこにもうひとつのノートが加わって、最終的には不協和音が形づくられるわけですけれど、この縦の和音が横に長いパッセージとして引き伸ばされることにより、これまでにないような心休まる甘美なアンビエンスが表現されています。この協和音と不協和音の揺らぎのような���のが非常に心地よいです。 同じ反復的な縦の和音が延々と繰り返され、また、そこに、シゼル・アンデレセンの静かで落ち着いた語りが挿入され、独特な音響世界が奥行きをましながら、どんどんと音の響きが押しひろげられていく。 そして、シゼルの語りこそ、その都度異なれど、楽曲の構成自体はおよそ九分以上もこのモチーフが延々と繰り返されるだけなのに、まったく飽きがこないどころか、このうるわしい音響世界に永遠浸っていたくなってしまう。曲自体の和音、そして、構成自体はとてもシンプルなのに、管楽器のブレスのこまかなニュアンスだけで、これほど壮大かつ甘美な音響世界がかたちづくられるというのはおよそ信じがたいという気もします。曲の最後で一度だけ和音が崩されるところも何とも甘く美しい。これは、ジャズ側からのアンビエントに対する真摯な回答のような趣きがありますね。

Sigurd Hole - Roraima - Amazon field recordings & Norwegian chamber jazz

Roraima, by Norwegian bassist and composer Sigurd Hole, was commissioned by Oslo World for the festival in 2020. The work reflects themes such as solidarity and ecological vulnerability and draws inspiration from the creation myth of the Yanomami people and the sound of the Amazon rainforest. The ensemble features Trygve Seim, Frode Haltli, Helga Myhr, Tanja Orning, Håkon Aase, Per Oddvar Johansen and Sigurd Hole, and the music also includes field recordings of the Amazon biophony by US soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause. The album is a live recording from the premiere in Jakob Church, Oslo, October 29th 2020.

Trygve Seim, Tora Augestad, Frode Haltli, Svante Henryson - Rumi Songs (2016, ECM)

The basic concept is “Rumi poems set to jazz instrumentation,” and it’s executed quite well throughout. The arrangements are lovely, and there’s great sax work from Trygve Seim as well as accordion from Frode Haltli.

If I have anything against it, it’s that they used the Coleman Barks translations of Rumi, which are generally not to my taste. But with so much else going on, those poems are a little better in this form than they are on the printed page.

În perioada 7 – 11 iulie 2021 se va derula cea de-a XXV-a ediţie a Festivalului de Jazz de la Gărâna. În cele cinci zile ale evenimentului vor avea loc 20 de concerte, lansări de disc şi carte şi un târg de viniluri. Astăzi, pe scena amplasată în Poiana Lupului, vor urca formaţiile Mircea Tiberian Trio, Paul Lay Trio, Trygve Seim Quartet şi Avishai Cohen Trio.
