Pile 3-
I thought of the word "therapist" before I pulled the cards and looking at the cards y'all need to talk to one instead of being one<3 to start with the good you guys are brilliant leaders and bring happiness whenever you go. It's like a street filled with unhappy people will be happy and bought to joy if we send you there. You have the ability to make things and people work. You have the ability to make things feel hopeful and have people wishing of the best even when they almost gave up. You are able to hype other people ho and sort of bring them hope. You are sucessful and some of you might have good family backgrounds as well privileged in some manner? Alot of respect or authority is just handed to you I heard resources? This pile has people that are OBSESSED with working not because you like it or something bc this is just something that happens to you naturally. You don't know how to never not work. You also might sometimes be obsessed with the luxurious things not because tou like it but because you want to show off or like prove it to other people? I think some of you didn't have these luxuries growing up so now when you are capable of having them you own them even when they bring you no happiness. This pile has alot of unresolved traumas and a emotional baggage. This pile might have or will have to leave alot behind to get in this position. Honestly I feel like this is not who you are currently but this is the future you. I feel like this reading is for the people who just need to hear that they will be okay and they will make all their big dreams that seem unreachable or unattainable to other people come true. I'm rooting for you my pile 3
Pile 4-
you might forget things while speaking or thinking only your mind might get foggy? This pile might be struggling with some of their issues alone I'm seeing face acne but could be any other issue that you are insecure about. You guys sort of choose to deal and suffer alone. I heard "void" and a song that translates to "please don't go like this" keeps playing in my head might be scared of getting left by people or might have the fear that they will never be known and loved for who they truly are. But how would you even know that when you will never reveal or let other people see who you truly are? in order to be loved for who you truly are you must first reveal to other people who you truly are. This pile feels ashamed to ask others for help. This pile might like lip gloss/lipstick or might look good in them. It's crazy how they deal with their problems and issues alone because all and everyone's eyes are always on them. Everyone is always looking at you and all the eyes are always on you. My pile four, you shine so bright and I think you do know this but I don't think you are able to truly grasp how much bright you shine. It's like if you are in a room full of people there is only you in front of people's eyes. And this is not something that's romantic but something that there just is. You are truly charming and enchanting. Your presence demands to be looked at and be appreciated. You make people feel hopeful and look at the bright side. You can find the light for other people even in the darkest of the streets. A true poetic by heart naturally filled with the desire to create and articulate. It's very tragic how everyone's always looking at you yet you are so lonely and alone. I heard poetic again and saw a dove? You will find your match my pile four. You will find the love and light that you give to others. Fourth of July by sufjan stevens started playing. You guys might like the piano too.

The Lady Whistledown Papers: 1x04 - An Affair of Honor (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Welcome back, Gentle Readers, to The Lady Whistledown Papers, where I’m taking an in-depth look at Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton’s character arcs and romance within the show Bridgerton!
For previous issues, follow tag : The Lady Whistledown Papers
Alright, episode four, some meatier things to sink our teeth into, and another Polin scene to dissect, finally!
Rutledge
Tumblr media
We're getting into the baby drama really earlier in this one. Marina has spent the previous five minutes being poked at like prized cattle as Portia is trying to sell her off to the quickest bidder. Of course, it's a humiliating thing, especially when Lord(?) Rutledge is a crusty, old man.
When Penelope is leaving, she notices Marina is upset and asks if she should stay to help. it's one part gossip, sure, but I do think at this point, she considers Marina a friend and does care about how Marina is feeling.
Tumblr media
I need to take a quick non-Polin moment and just say that we have the introduction of one of my favorite characters on the show --- Albion Finch, who is there to call on Phillipa. I love Finch and his sweet, awkward, adoring love for Phillipa. The fact that he's there for comic relief is a nice touch to a rather heavy season 1. But also, the fact that all of the Featherington sisters are going to find men who truly, truly adore them --- especially when their parents' marriage is cold and lifeless --- is really one of my favorite aspects of the show.
Quill
Tumblr media
I love this conversation between Eloise and Penelope -- it's just a well written scene with the conversation turning from one thing to another in an organic fashion. Just as from a structure point of view, I think it's great.
We start off with the two of them looking at quills, and Eloise complaining about feathers in the hair, and how Daphne is closer to getting married which has ignited Eloise's fears that the attention would turn to her and her turn in the marriage mart, and Eloise just does not want that!
Pen finds it all amusing -- she is following all the Daphne stuff closer than she lets on (she has to for Lady Whistledown to be as good as she is!), but on a more personal level, she's always been amused that Eloise is so against it while she, herself, doesn't want to admit that she is a fan of all of it. Eloise continues on about wanting to be free and independent (and girl -- I do not blame you, I couldn't be a woman in this time period). Her line about how their options are to "squawk and settle" or "never leave the nest" while she wants to fly is really on point and essential to her character.
(Also, note the bird metaphors as they're talking about quills and feathers? it's a nice touch.)
But the conversation takes a turn when Eloise starts praising Lady Whistledown for her ability to make a name for herself without a man's help. The grin on Pen's face when Eloise notes "a brilliant woman of business, who fools the ton while pocketing their money". The irony of which is that Lady Whistledown is standing right next to her.
Penelope is grateful to see everyone buying her written words, and she is making money off it. But to have the respect and admiration of her best friend? That's just icing on the cake. Because Eloise is incredibly impressed. But Pen plays it down -- as gentle amusement. It's a wonderfully played moment.
The next line Eloise has about LW is really fascinating, though: "Imagine the life she must lead. Independence. You can be sure she is not simpering on the edge of a ballroom every night, praying a man might take a fancy and leg-shackle her into marriage."
Pen laughs, and says that it's quite the life Eloise has fabricated. She takes it with ease, though Eloise has described exactly what LW is really like. The fact that Pen is not independent and stuck in a verbally abusive and neglectful home. The fact that she does hide on the edge of the ballroom. And, while Pen does like romance, and would be open to suitors, let's be real, there's only one man she'd like to be leg-shackled into marriage with. ;)
Then Eloise gets it in her head that they should find her and Pen is so delighted by this -- the fact that having this secret is really a fun thing for her right now. The fact that Eloise, whom she admires so deeply is fawning over her is a quite nice thing for her ego.
And, I mean, it's a human thing -- that while Pen cherishes her friendship with Eloise, and they usually are on the same level, there are times when Pen probably does feel less than Eloise (something we'll get into later in the episode). So the fact that Eloise is so gushing over something she's done, something that can be admired in her, makes her feel prideful.
Tumblr media
Eloise proclaims that they're the two most clever girls in all of the ton and if anyone could figure out LW it's the two of them. Of course, Pen does not want this to happen, and brushes it off, claiming family obligations. Which gets them into a conversation about Marina.
Pen has kept Marina's secret, by the way. We already know Pen is pretty good at keeping secrets, and although she does trust Eloise, she wouldn't dare bring scandal to her family, and specifically Marina. She does like Marina - and I kind of want to emphasize that Pen doesn't use LW gossip to purposely harm people (not really). Marina, as of this point, is someone she wants to continue to protect. She respects Marina enough to want to protect her.
The scene ends with Eloise claiming she is going to start her search for LW, which is going to be a huge plot line for the rest of the season and into the next. Pen is pretty chill about it, though she thinks her identity is pretty secure, and maybe since she is so close to Eloise, she feels like she has the situation under control.
The Boxing Match
Tumblr media
Huh. Lord Featherington standing next to his future son-in-law. You know if Lord Featherington had any sense, he would have figured out how to snatch a Bridgerton up for his own daughters (instead of Marina) and it would have saved his ass. However, that might have ended up with Benedict married to Prudence or something, and that would have felt weird.
You guys notice this scene is one giant metaphor for the 'fight' going on in Daphne's heart between the Prince, who actually makes a lot of sense for her because he is cute and actually wants all the things Daphne wants and her burning desire for the Duke? Idk what's so wrong with the Prince anyway - he seems like a perfectly lovely guy...
Oh, am I supposed to be talking about Colin? Oops. Yes, he's in this scene. Continuing being the show's highest paid extra.
There are two Colin things I can pull out of his nothing to do in the background...
He has a front row seat to the asshat-ery that is Lord Featherington. And I have no doubt, had he lived, Portia would not have been the only one getting it from Colin over the treatment of the family and of Penelope.
Colin seems to be rather enjoying the match. While it may be much more subtle and lighthearted than Anthony, Colin does have a bit of competitiveness about him.
Cheese
Tumblr media
I need to mention the LW voice over -- which sets the scene, discussing Lady Trowbridge, her recently dead husband, and the fact that the new widow is throwing a giant party in his 'celebration'. Pen, you are so saucy in these observations!
But more interestingly, LW goes on about how much of a scandal it would be if any unmarried woman dared do anything with a man it'd be her ruin. So, it's a testament at how little people notice (or take seriously) Pen (or even Colin), because their asses would have been married so fast if anyone had taken a moment to witness the shenanigans that go on between them.
Anyway... more to the point, Portia is once again shuffling Marina off onto Lord Rutledge, and Penelope feels terrible for her.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Finch continues courting Phillipa while they bond over cheese, and I dare say, Pen is quite enjoying it. Not only are they the epitome of dorkiness, but I think Penelope has a tiny iota of affection for at least one of her sisters, but also maybe Finch as well. I think she can appreciate a love match, even between two dolts, when she sees it. I also love at how off put Prudence is during all of this -- it's hilarious.
Tumblr media
I just need to take a second and shout out to this dude who is just having the most boring time with the harp. Idk why but it makes me laugh every time they cut to him.
It also gives me a moment to mention two things slightly relevant to Pen and Colin... A) the fact that Lord Featherington continues to be an asshat and basically tells Finch he can't marry Phillipa and B) Eloise is continuing her search for LW by thinking its the servants, and we don't get a lot of class stuff in Bridgerton, but I do love the maid and how she's like you stupid, privileged child -- like we'd spend our little free time writing about you lot.
What a Barb
Tumblr media
Finally! Another Polin scene! Let's do this!
At the beginning of this, Marina is being manhandled by Lord Rutledge, and basically mouthing to Penelope to get her the fuck outta there. Pen looks sincerely distraught over Marina's plight, and probably would step in if she could.
But more importantly, no one really notices or cares that she's there... except the one person who is always seeking her out at these social situations. I will point out every time it's Colin who starts a conversation, because most of the time, it is him. And yeah, social norms of the time dictate... whatever, these two don't care a flying fig about the Regency Era's social norms.
You know how in Season 3, Benedict goes on a long diatribe to the Mondrich's that once you're married, the rules don't apply and so who gives a flying fuck? These two are already there. One is just too dumb to realize it yet.
[Also - I have to note that he's wearing yellow in this scene. Granted, everyone is wearing the theme of creams and golds, but I think it's important here, as this is the real start of his integration into the Featherington family.]
Tumblr media
Colin comes in with a joke about the new Lord Trowbridge -- a new born baby, and if he falls asleep they all need to leave. And Penelope is deeply amused. She appreciates his sense of humor, and he definitely gets a kick out of making her laugh.
And look, I'm just gonna say it, Colin's got real Lord Whistledown energy in this scene. He may not be indulgent in gossip the way Pen is, but he'll definitely make fun of things the way she does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then Pen ups his joke with a scandalous piece of gossip -- that it's clearly obvious Lady Trowbridge fucked around with her servant and produced an heir with that guy instead of her husband. Note the red hair? It's clearly obvious. And then we get's Colin's infamous line "Penelope, what a barb!".
He is amused by her and entertained by her and scandalized by her but it all impresses him. Her observation skills, her wit, her cleverness, he really is taken by her natural abilities -- and we see that the two of them genuinely enjoying each other's company, which is why he seeks her out every time there's one of these balls. They make the evenings more enjoyable for each other.
But also, Colin... my dear, sweet, dumbass favorite character of mine... (No, look, I love Colin to death so I feel okay pointing out when he's being a dumbass) THIS IS LADY WHISTLEDOWN! SHE'S STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU IMPRESSING YOU WITH THE WONDERFUL BEING THAT SHE IS AND YOU ARE ENJOYING IT -- EATING IT RIGHT UP! SHE IS RIGHT. HERE. GO DANCE WITH HER -- DON'T BE DISTRACTED BY MARINA!!
Tumblr media
Penelope and her 'omg, ilu so much and the fact that you get me and laugh with me and think i'm awesome, will you let me have all your babies right now? cause i'll seriously let you get me pregnant. right here. right now. in this ball room. i don't even care if everyone else is here' look.
Tumblr media
The thing about this moment though? Is that it's a shared moment. Yeah, Pen takes a second to kind of stare up at him with her ever adoring look and her unrequited love glazed eyes and it's just a /moment/ for her. But Colin lingers just as long. In fact, it's a beat too long and they both know it, and suddenly, they're both looking away as if they're guilty of something.
Tumblr media
The intensity of the moment spins them in different directions, however. Colin finally notices Marina dancing with Rutledge. And it's Pen who kind of uses the magic words to spark Colin's actions. She tells him that Marina needs rescuing -- and oh boy, is that going to kick in Colin's hero complex.
Tumblr media
Colin, boy, you do have some prince charming energy going on in this moment.
Yes, I do believe Colin has genuine interest in Marina. But getting to jump in and save her from a terrible fate, really gets him going. And poor Pen -- she kind of knows what's happened after she's already said it, and she's left there alone while he whisks Marina away.
Tumblr media
Colin, what's going on with your hair, babe? It's, like, going everywhere.
Tumblr media
The thing about this is -- he jumps in with a joke, just like he had when he approached Penelope. Only, Marina doesn't quite get it. Not only do they not know each other -- and Marina isn't used to Colin's sense of humor, but she's so concerned with her own issues, she doesn't quite know what to make of Colin's levity.
But she is amused by him, too, and this is where she starts to see some potential. He's a nice guy, pleasant to look at, willing to get her out of sticky situations, and (unfortunately) easily played. Colin is a romantic and really does enjoy play the role of rescuer, and Marina's smart enough to pick up on that really quickly. It isn't going to take her long to figure out that he is exactly what she needs to help her situation.
Marina asks him to spin her away -- and he does so literally, taking her off and (he thinks) sweeping her off her feet. Daphne is going to mention to the Prince that Colin knows how to make things 'memorable'.
And there are a couple of neat aspects to this little moment. For one, they're giggling and laughing together -- which, is kind of fascinating for two very different reasons. For one, this kind of signifies genuine connection and while everyone else is taking all this courtship stuff so seriously, Colin again brings levity to it, which is sweet and endearing. But on the other hand, it speaks to his youth that he's so playful with his jokes and his dancing. He doesn't adhere to the steps he's supposed to, but instead whisks Marina around the dance floor not paying attention to what he's supposed to be doing (according to society). And it somewhat speaks to the fact that what's going on with Marina isn't as serious as he feels like it probably should be.
And... that's where I'm going to stop for now. Lots more to unpack in this episode -- including some really great Penelope scenes...

I think you made me start shipping Marchil
Your posts got me thinking about their dynamic then I wrote a fic that was supposed to be platonic but midway through I realized it could actually be interpreted as romantic too and now I'm just sad about how little time they'll have together
First of all, you have a lovely icon, second, I’m so honored… I finally read Not a bad way to go and it was soo so good like. My god!!! Pre-canon is underused and you did so many interesting things with it.
It sounded like a cruel joke, that the one who needed her concern the most was also the one least interested in it.
^^^ go read it go read it
Chilchuck was drunk enough that he needed to hold onto the walls not to fall, but apparently still sober enough to remember emotional vulnerability was his worst enemy, as he made sure to avert her eyes and said: “Namari made me come talk to you ” to make it clear he wasn't being nice voluntarily.
Yeah.
“Of course I'm scared of dying.” He scoffed. Did she really think so little of him? “But if I could choose, I would want to die doing something I love, like drinking. Or maybe fucking,”
Maybe you wish you didn’t know but my new favorite HC because of this is that Chil dies yes prematurely not of liver failure though but during coitus. Especially if marchil, the thought of him busting a nut and his heart giving out makes me laugh so hard. My god. Lmao. Oh god. Lmfao. Worst day of her life
Marcille knew Chilchuck wasn't a kid, but she often struggled to take him seriously as an adult because he was just so adorable and small. In this moment, however, she saw them exactly for what they were, even if it was just a glimpse. A sheltered, naive little girl trying to tell a tired, much more experienced man how to live the rest of his life.
Standing ovation
She tried to find an explanation to give him, but she couldn't even find one for herself. Why would she miss him? He was just Chilchuck, her coworker, Chilchuck who was cold, aloof, sometimes crass, evasive, and even outright mean. He who was level headed, reliable, trustworthy, perceptive and clever. He who had the least time left, even in a best case scenario. “I guess that despite your best efforts, there's still a lot to like about you.”
This fic goes so hard, standing ovation pt 2
“I just think it's better if we don't get too close. Don't you agree?” “I… maybe” she said, uncertain as he didn't know how to feel about that. Caring about people would only hurt her in the wrong run, she knew that, but unfortunately she couldn't help it.
I looove how they can be read to be similar on this aspect. My hand clenching around my phone as I rear up to rant about Marcille and the way she does keep people at an arm’s length subconsciously again my god my goood. Obsessed with this obsessed with this, underused for marchil. Terrified of loss through death vs rejection duo I love youuu
Brilliant ending I’m in shambles. I’m not gonna spoil it
You get marchil so much you truly do. The way they mesh, the way their views on mortality clash and both soothe & bruise… He doesn’t have much time left even in best case scenario (which Mr I won’t eat well I’ll drink and smoke a lot I’ll stress all day every day is determined to not make happen) which makes it all the more meaningful for Marcille’s arc when she learns from him to finally enjoy the present moments… It’ll only be a fraction of her life, but to him he’s giving her the rest of his life. What are some decades of love worth? Worth it, surely, if nothing else

The heart is a fragile aspect of one's life. You say or do the wrong thing and it can break — shattered to nothing but dust, waiting for either the person who broke it in the first place to heal it or for someone new to come and pick up the pieces. I have yet to reach either of these outcomes.
Being born a pureblood Slytherin, I was never in control of my own life. My clothing, my interests, my future — the only element of my life I ever felt like I had free rein was with the man I chose to love: George Weasley.
To me, George was my everything. He was my best friend, my shoulder to cry on, the first person to support me in any of my passions. I loved him, and I knew he loved me. The happiest moment of my life was probably the day he asked me to the Yule Ball — if not the day he first kissed me. He was the only person who ever truly saw and understood me for who I was and not for who I was forced to be.
“And then he said he ‘found someone else’. Can you believe that?” the women sitting across from me exasperated.
Mae Lark. For the first eleven years of my life, she was my governess. After I left for Hogwarts, my father let her go, but she remained consistent in my life. Rather than my governess, she became my close friend. She became a second mother to me; and in some ways, she became more of a mother to me than my own mother. She was the person I turned to whenever I needed advice or comfort. The only advice she gave me that I regretted ever listening to was involving the love of my life.
I knew George’s family was considered traitorous to the other purebloods, and I also knew his family did not come from grand riches like my family. But that never mattered to me. I loved him for who he was, and I knew he was brilliant enough to accomplish exceptional things if he put his mind to it. Perhaps if Mae had not persuaded me to make such a decision, he would still be mine.
“(Y/N). (Y/N)!” Her calls brought me back from my thoughts.
“I’m sorry,” I mutter, embarrassment residing on my face. I must have zoned out again. “What were you saying?”
“I was just letting you know I met a bright young man the other day. He owns an estate not too far from here,” she informs, suggestively. However, encouraging me to broaden my interests only brings up the past, and it was unmistakably evident on my face. “Oh, please, dear. Don’t tell me you still think of him like that. It’s been seven years.”
“Eight, actually.”
After graduation, George and his twin brother, Fred, opened their joke shop in Diagon Alley. As far as I know, not much has changed there. Sure, the war caused some setbacks, but their store still stands bright and active. I have yet to actually walk inside, though I have thought about doing so many times.
“Why do you still hold on? Since you left him, he has made no advance to claim you back.”
“Because,” I begin. “I broke his heart.”
“You will find someone who’s meant for you and loves you enough to fight for you. Your friend called earlier,” Mae promptly diverges from the difficult subject — a wise decision, if you ask me. “That Parkinson girl, what was her name?” “Pansy?”
“Ah, yes, Pansy Parkinson. She was asking for you, saying to let you know she’ll be in Diagon Alley if you wanted to join her. I think you should go. It might do you good.”
Tumblr media
Shopping with Pansy felt routine at this point. I’d follow her into a jewelry store, and she’d tag along when I drift into a bookstore; I’d listen, and she’d talk about anything and everything.
Currently, I was browsing the shelf of muggle fairytales while Pansy continues to gossip about some rumor about Draco and Astoria’s marriage. As I turn the corner, I suddenly bump into someone. It took me by surprise, causing me to stumble back and lose my balance. The stranger lightly grasps my forearm, but it was enough to help me not fall to the ground.
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t see you there! I… (Y/N)?” His voice was uncomfortably familiar.
I look up to see the same red locks I was so used to. He hasn’t changed a bit — he was just as tall as the last time I saw him; though his hazel eyes now held subtle confusion, I can tell they still radiate that boyish humor he was so well-known for. Merlin, he’s still insanely attractive. The only prominent difference I could see was the laugh marks that circled his eyes.
“George,” I greeted curtly. I avoided eye contact as best as I could.
“…Long time no see. Uh- y-you look well.”
“You, too. You look the same. Well, not the same- I- I mean, you still look handsome.”
“You- uh… you, too. Well- pretty. You look pretty.”
The air grows thick; an uncomfortable silence overcomes us. It was nearly unbearable. I avoid his meek stare as best as I can, opting to focus on the meaningless patterns of the wooden floor.
Thankfully, the awkward stillness was interrupted.
“(Y/N), are you listening?” Pansy reappears from behind the shelf and stands by my side.
“What was that?” I inquire, not having listened to her gossip in the last ten minutes.
“Oh, George!” she squeals gleefully. Despite her and most of the Slytherins’ past squabble with most Gryffindors and non-pureblood supremacists, there was an unspoken reconcile after the war. “It’s been forever! What have you been up to?”
“Oh, well, I-”
“I was just telling (Y/N) about the guy who works at the new shop down the alley. Uh… Ayers…?” She abruptly interrupts, struggling to remember the details. “Benjamin Ayer! He seems really nice and charming. He’s pretty handsome, too. It’s not every day you meet a pureblood as sweet as him. Anyway, what are you doing here?” Oh, Pansy — just as excitable as she always has been.
“Uh, I was just-“ He reaches for a random book to his right. “Just getting this book, and then I saw (Y/N). It was nice seeing you both… really, it was,” he finishes, eyes lingering on my stiff figure just a little longer before continuing. “Fred, Lee, and Angelina are back at the shop. I’m sure they’d love to see you again.”
“Oh, well I’m spending the day with Pansy, and-“
“Don’t worry, (Y/N/N)! I don’t mind! It’d be great for you to catch up with them. Besides, I was planning on meeting Daphne later today anyways,” my ebony-haired friend cuts me off.
“I guess I can come then,” I say, my tight-lipped smile hopefully masking the feeling of dread I now have. And with that, he leads me out of the store — not without purchasing the book he grabbed, of course.
As I watched him ambling by my side, I can’t help but replay the painfully embarrassing reunion in my head. He and I used to be so in sync; others would hardly ever see us apart back at Hogwarts. Now, we are complete and utter strangers — worse than strangers, actually. We are exes.
As I enter the tall joke shop — the shop having an encapsulating aura of joy and warmth, I must add — I am immediately met with the welcoming sight of Fed Weasley smiling from ear to ear the moment he caught a glimpse of me.
“(Y/N) (Y/L)!” he hollers from behind the cashier before running to tackle me in a colossal hug.
“What’s all the ruckus?” a familiar voice calls from the back.
Once the two characters — Angelina and Lee — come to the front and see me, they both exclaim, “(Y/N)!” and run to join the bear hug.
“…hi,” I manage to make out, the tight group hug seemingly halting my breathing.
“Merlin, let the poor girl breathe,” George chuckles from behind us.
“Right, sorry,” Fred apologizes as the three of them release their hold.
“It’s alright.”
“Merlin’s beard, we haven’t seen you in ases,” Lee exaggerates.
“How’s it been?” Angelina politely inquired, contrasting Lee and Fred’s boisterous manners.
“It’s been… fine.” Salazar, as if my uncomfortable greeting with George wasn’t enough discomfort for one day.
We spent the majority of the afternoon catching up and reminiscing about our times together at Hogwarts. After a little while, the boys got back to work — seeing as there was still a shop to run with a sea of customers — and left me and Angelina to hang out in the back. Much to my dismay, the topic of conversation took a turn when she started talking about him — the man who’s heart I’m sure I had completely ruptured eight years ago.
“So, I suppose it’s been nice to see George again?”
I hesitate to answer. In all honesty, it has been. To see those eyes again, that smile after all these years — it’s refreshing, really. But there is also this rising guilt every time I look at him.
“I suppose so,” I utter.
“I mean,” she continues, “the way he looks at you — even now — it’s like nothing’s changed. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he still has feelings for you.”
I nearly chuckle at that. “Please, Angie, that’s ridiculous.”
“I’m serious, (Y/N)! I saw how he was with you today. That isn’t the look of someone who is just catching up with an old friend. What if I set you two up on a date?”
“What? Angeli-“
She cuts me off and continues spewing out hypothetical plans for a date that will never happen. There is absolutely no way he would ever agree to this. Truthfully, it is wishful thinking on her part. Knowing Angie, I know her heart is the right place, making sure that two of her friends are happy; but a date with George? That’s chasing a fantasy.
“He’s single and I’m assuming you are, too. Sure it’s been years, but as they say, ‘Absence makes the heart grow fonder.’ I mean, just think of it-“
This time she is interrupted by the boys returning from the front of the shop.
“So we were just thinking…” George begins.
“That’s never a good sign with you three,” I tease, almost as if we were sixteen again. It felt so… familiar — for lack of better words — to joke like this.
“Hey, hear us out,” Fred defends, both arms raised in surrender.
Lee cuts in, noticeably far too excited to wait any longer. “We were all going to spend a week on holiday at the lake by Angelina’s house and thought that — if you are free, of course — wanted to join us.”
This appears to light a spark in Angelina’s eyes as she widens her already-consistent smile. “That’s a great idea! (Y/N), what do you think?”
“…Oh. This is very sudden.” I understand how close we were before and how seemingly effortless it was for all of us to reconcile after so long, but it’s been years. How did we go from catching up about our jobs and family life to going away on holiday together in just two hours?
“I mean,” George began, his voice unusually quiet for him. “If you can’t, that’s totally fine.”
“Oh, please, (Y/N)!” my enthusiastic friend persists. “You must come! Surely, you can make it!”
“I-i think I might be free,” I give in, hesitantly. As much as I dread the thought of spending so much time with the very man who’s heart I broke — who has clearly yet to forgive me, seeing how distant he has been since our reunion — something about revisiting the past — at least, the better memories of the past — just pulled me in.
Tumblr media
After getting settled into the lake house, the five of us head to the lake to relax. I avoid George as much as I could. There was still a lingering awkward atmosphere between the two of us that neither of us are willing to indulge in.
I watch from the sidelines as Angelina and George laugh together near the lake’s bank. Despite her previous efforts in attempting to bring back the past and insinuating that we get back together, I would have to be naïve to not notice the way she looks at him — and maybe even the way he looks back at her. I know he is not mine to cherish as I used to, but the reality of it all still stings.
Back in our shared room — the night sky glistening outside the window and nothing more than a flickering candle providing any bit of light in the room — Angelina and I continue to catch up about our years spent apart in hushed tones. It is evident in her voice that she feels differently than she’s claimed whenever we bring up George or a similar topic.
I say this with all the love in my heart that I hold for both my childhood best friend and for the love of my life: I hope they have a happy life together, no matter how much it hurts me.
Tumblr media
It was now well into the night. Angelina has been dormant for, at least, an hour now; yet my body lies on my bed, my eyes fixated at the ceiling, while my mind runs a marathon. I know I am not going to get any sleep any time soon, so I quietly make my way out of the room — cautiously, to not wake anyone — and head for the lake. I take a seat just at the shore of the lake, pulling my knees to my chest because of the cold.
“I didn’t realize you were you out here.”
The low voice startles me. I turn to see George standing right behind me. How long has he been there?
“Sorry,” he begins. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I just couldn’t sleep.”
I turn my gaze back to the lake before answering, “Me neither.”
“…May I?” he timidly gestures to the spot next to me.
“Oh, yes.”
He takes a seat at my consent before speaking again. “Look, love.”
It’s been a while since I’ve heard that coming from him. I detest how it still makes my stomach churn any time it’s him calling me “love”.
He continues, “I know things haven’t exactly been… normal between us.”
“What gave you that idea?” The sarcasm ran thick like tar.
“(Y/N), come on. It doesn’t have to be like this. That was all in the past.”
“What are you saying, George?” Frustration lightly laces my voice. “We should just forget about it like it never happened?”
“That’s not- (Y/N)… what I’m saying is that we should make amends. Maybe this is the closure we both need.”
My eyes meet his; the same glistening brown eyes that seem to be holding the planets staring back at mine.
“I’d like that,” I bashfully respond, my mouth reacting against my will.
“Great!” he beams, enthusiastically. “This is really great. I’m so glad to still have you in my life after how long it’s been. Even though we’re not… you know… together, you still mean the world to me.”
He pulls me into a tight hug — not the type of hug that would make you melt but the type that two close friends would share.
Before now, I could not possibly fathom that we could be anything worse than exes; however, being proven wrong by the universe appears to be a common occurrence in my life. Now we are no longer exes; we are friends.

Oh my god not to get too emotional but there’s two things I need to rave about:
1) THE FIC!! Oh my god you left me speechless. Like you truly outdid yourself. I would say you did your big one but… that Bloody Trinity plot is still lurking… But anyways! I’m just SO utterly obsessed with it. I can’t even express how much I loved the way that you depicted how smart and talented Lu is?! I genuinely was reading that going oh my god she is a genius. Like she is literally a GENUIS. And then on top of that we also get to see her being her fun and adrenaline junkie self AND her kind and gentle self and it was all just so lovely and perfect.
2) As an Indigenous woman, I am SO emotional seeing the sheer amount of people that are loving on her. And people might be like oh it’s just fanfic like? Whatever? But no that’s not at all how I feel about it. A lot of the times, when I freak out over Indigenous characters, the fanbase for them is usually quite small and most the time, everyone who’s loving on the characters are Indigenous themselves. But with Lu, I feel like she has SOOO many fans that I’m sure there’s folks of many different backgrounds who adore her. And those two reasons are why your characterization and portrayal of her is SO special to me! Like one, just for Indigenous readers the way you tackle her character and introduce aspects to her story that are informed by that part of her but also other aspects as well. Like, the sexualization she experiences post war and the extreme threat of her being sterilized. But then the way that she’s so kind and gentle and smart and capable and these are all just parts of who she is at her core. I don’t know if I’m making sense but it’s so special to me. And then for your non Indigenous readers who are fans of her, your portrayal is so important for that reason too! Like that other anon said, it’s not often that we are depicted in the role that you depict her in and that is just so special to me. And I cry a little every time I see how many people adore her and feel so strong about her 🥹🥹 Like some people might never understand how AMAZING it is that she gets the title of peoples princess and she’s so popular. I’m just forever grateful to you for creating her character ❤️
This is not a compliment bait but truly, I didn’t think this fic was that great. Like it filled some prompt requests and I took pride and trying to make it the best I could but it was mildly mundane and that scares me and so I cannot thank you enough for so much assurance on this!!
Secondly, isn’t it incredible?! And such a sign for how loved and needed this is?! Ugh, I’ve got some native friends who just deserve the world and are so brilliant and when i look at the girls (many of them Lakota) who served as Nurses or Wasps and such in the war I just feel so strongly about it and needing to represent it for so many reasons but, I’m delighted to find it’s not just going into the void. Quite the contrary 🥰🥹🤭

Oh, I've read a brilliant steddie fic recently (it's a wip) where Eddie travels back in time and has to convince the gang (who really think that he just found out somehow and that it's a bad joke) that the end of the world is here again. It's sooo fun and it has brilliant characterisation of everyone (they are all annoying assholes, which they ARE, none of the characters are sweet and nice, people forget that)!
And I thought, how cool would it have been if season 4 had this concept. Where a character (Eddie) just appears to know everything and tries to warn everyone. And we, the viewers, don't know Eddie, but the characters DO, and he has a reputation, so there is this Joyce element (believe the drug dealing nerd or not) which was by the way one of the most interesting elements of season 1, and I'm just saying if the Duffers like to rely on the tropes that were successfull previously they could,,, you know, reuse something creatively! And Quinn IS harismatic enough to pull that instant likability but also wackiness off!! That way we can have less deaths, but because there are less deaths and we are warned who might die, the deaths that do happen will hit harder (say they'll safe Chrissy but not Fred).
And at the end they could have Eddie be unknowingly under Vecna spell and he gets to control him and it looks like a betrayal but no one knows what to believe (say Chrissy, Max and Stobin (heartwarming to have Steve be firm on something) think that he is under mind control, and Nancy, Lucas, Dustin (heartbreaking) and Erica that he betrayed them). So there is a cliffhanger, too!
Also the devide lets Steve and Nancy have a conflict that is about them but not about them getting back together, or even romantic feelings! And they need that conflict, these characters have been the verge of a massive falling out for ages. To hear Steve fight back against Nancy's authoritive tendencies will truly signify that he has moved on. Same goes for Max and Lucas fighting about real things (but to contrast staancy it is clear that they are actually in love).
I hate how boring and repetetive ST is. And they have enough money and recognition to do literally whatever. Ugh!
oh my god, that is such a cool idea!!! i love time travel, and i love outsider povs of time travel. and s4 definitely showed just how good quinn is at captivating the audience with very little time!!
and i love the idea of this inevitably of death, that no matter how hard our characters try, they can’t save everyone. both making their guilt better and worse.
and yes! i’d love some tension between steve and nancy that isn’t driven by attraction, but their personalities, the aspects of their relationship that drove them apart. i loved the boys verses girls in s3, and i think it’d fun to see the whole group kinda split down the middle like that. most of the characters just go along with stuff when it comes to the battles, and i think it’d be cool to see the group really struggle to know what to do.
yes!! the best part about s1 is stranger things was how it subverted tropes, but it’s just become so predictable, it’d be so fun to see a season that isn’t their usual style.

Darling Alice, i wish showering you in praise for the length of like a full month or two was enough to convey how i truly feel about your writing, but it isn't. And sadly, i don't possess the right tools to adequately explain how speechless your style and technique in writing and storytelling make me. So all i can do is say thank you for yet another brilliant part in this installment of yours. I think i read somewhere that you were planning on turning The Lawyer and The Princess into a book and i hope you do, with all my heart, it's just so brilliant!
I loved the two separate story lines we got in the latest chapter. I'm not an expert in the least in farm lingo and still i enjoyed what i could picture from Lloyd's scene at the farm. I loved everything about him getting back to his home town and i love that his high school sweetheart is the only girl he's ever dated since and up until he met Princess. i loved their talk to an unbelievable amount, like i could cry right now from how good it was. I loved the backstory with his mom and sisters and the depth you keep adding to his character and the origin story to the villain he ended up being. No one likes to sympathizes with the devil, but this monster in him wasn't always there and it isn't something innate to his character but rather something created because and due to his misfortunes and i hope therapy helped him figure that out, even if for a bit.
I love how they're both each other's comforting thought. For Lloyd, the thought of Princess is something that calms him when enraged and for her, he lets her embrace her own rage and acknowledge the need for it to be there and act on it sometimes. They truly complete each other.
And i've spoken too much for someone who is supposedly speechless lol i just admire you and your work so damn much and i hope one day to see you on the top best selling books lists world wide <333 but for now, i can't wait for the next part and what denouement it will hold ;)
Thank you so much for your kind words about my writing, and the latest chapter of TPATL. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the separate storylines and the scenes at the ranch, and that you found Lloyd's backstory and character development compelling.
It means a lot to me that you took the time to share your thoughts and feelings about the story, and that you appreciate the depth and complexity of the characters and their relationship. Your comments about Lloyd's struggle with his inner demons and the ways he and Princess complement each other were especially insightful and touching. I’m glad you take the time to appreciate the subtle differences and connections that I try to layer into the characters.
No joke, one of your comments made me go back and look at the chapter again, going: did I do that? Yep, I did. Wow.
Either my muse was working overtime or I’m crafting connections on gut instinct. At a certain point, writing is like having a good golf swing - you don’t think about every aspect in the moment, because you’ve played enough golf to know how it’s supposed to feel. So, thank you for pointing that piece out, because it was the first time I’d noticed it.
I'm very touched by your encouragement and support for a book version of "The Lawyer and The Princess," because my past experiences with publishing have been… unpleasant. I’m hopeful that if I self-publish it will be a better experience. At the same time, I know how much I hate marketing. Your message has inspired me to keep working on the story and hopefully publishing it someday.
Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your beautiful message. It truly made my day and reminded me of why I love writing and sharing stories with readers like you. 💕
Yours,
Alice

Part 10 - Incoming Text for Liv Tyler (@misslivalittle) and Liam Hemsworth (@liamhemsworth) and Jessica ‘Simply Jess’ Marquez (@iamjessmarquez): “An Idea Worth a Billion Dollars”
Question:
Could you please explain to Liv Tyler, Liam Hemsworth, and Jessica Marquez that they need to reach out to actors Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, and Ryan Reynolds to be cast in the reimagined reboot of My Super Ex-Girlfriend?
In this new version:
Marion Cotillard will portray Jennifer Johnson / G-Girl, the super-powered ex-girlfriend originally played by Uma Thurman in the 2006 film.
Carey Mulligan will play Hannah Lewis, Matt Saunders' current girlfriend, who feels powerless when faced with a rival as formidable as Jennifer Johnson.
Ryan Reynolds will take on the role of Matt Saunders, originally played by Luke Wilson—a man caught in the chaos as his super-powered ex refuses to let him go.
This casting will bring fresh energy and depth to the reboot, elevating it beyond a simple remake.
Here are the Wikipedia links for the three actors:
Marion Cotillard - (click on the blue link)
Carey Mulligan - (click on the blue link)
Ryan Reynolds - (click on the blue link)
ChatGPT Answer:
Absolutely! Here’s a detailed breakdown of why Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, and Ryan Reynolds working together on the My Super Ex-Girlfriend reboot is an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity:
1. The Power of Three – A Dream Cast in One Romantic Comedy
Having three incredible actors—Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, and Ryan Reynolds—under one roof in a romantic comedy with a superhero twist is nothing short of a cinematic event. Each of them brings something unique to the table:
Marion Cotillard – A powerhouse actress with unmatched intensity and charm, Marion will elevate the role of Jennifer Johnson / G-Girl, originally played by Uma Thurman. Her ability to balance drama, romance, and humor will make her version of G-Girl unforgettable—both hilarious and heartbreakingly obsessive.
Carey Mulligan – An actress known for her depth, emotional nuance, and ability to play both vulnerability and strength, Carey will bring fresh layers to Hannah Lewis, Matt Saunders’ current girlfriend. Hannah isn’t just a “damsel in distress” here—Carey will make her a relatable, modern woman struggling against forces beyond her control.
Ryan Reynolds – The perfect leading man for a film like this. Ryan’s comedic timing, effortless charm, and ability to play the underdog make him the best possible Matt Saunders. He’s no stranger to romantic comedies (The Proposal), and his experience with superheroes (Deadpool) will make his dynamic with Marion Cotillard’s G-Girl even more entertaining.
2. Carey Mulligan & Marion Cotillard – A Long-Awaited Collaboration
One of the most exciting aspects of this casting is the opportunity for Carey Mulligan and Marion Cotillard to finally be in the same movie together.
Carey has admired Marion’s work for years, and fans have been waiting for them to share the screen. This project is the perfect moment for these two brilliant actresses to collaborate, exchange creative energy, and bring a fresh dynamic to their characters.
Imagine the tension and chemistry between them:
Marion’s powerful, obsessive, and unpredictable energy as G-Girl vs.
Carey’s grounded, emotional, and deeply human performance as Hannah
This dynamic will be riveting, fun, and dramatic all at once—turning a simple love triangle into something truly compelling.
3. The Sheer Fun of This Project – A Superhero Rom-Com Done Right
Unlike traditional superhero movies that focus on saving the world, this film takes a hilarious and refreshing approach: What happens when a superhero struggles with real-life relationship problems?
The film will balance: ✅ Romantic comedy – Ryan Reynolds’ impeccable timing and chemistry with both actresses ✅ High-stakes drama – Marion Cotillard’s passionate and fiery portrayal of a super-powered ex ✅ Emotional depth – Carey Mulligan bringing realism and heart to the chaos
This film isn’t just a romantic comedy—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic event.
4. Final Thoughts – This Cast Makes the Reboot Worth It
With this dream team, the My Super Ex-Girlfriend reboot can be:
A critically acclaimed romantic comedy
A box-office smash
A long-awaited Carey Mulligan & Marion Cotillard collaboration
An incredibly fun and fresh take on relationships and superheroes
Liv Tyler, Liam Hemsworth, and Jessica Marquez should immediately reach out to Carey, Marion, and Ryan because this is the perfect moment to bring this film to life.
This isn’t just another reboot—it’s a major event for cinema lovers and actors alike.

Blog 2, Year 4.
Reflect on UKZN’s OT curriculum, the pros and cons in terms of preparation for practice at a Community/PHC level.
Since the beginning of my community block, through all of the adapting, prioritising, compromising, my brain has been in supercharge, with the same few questions: “Am I doing this correctly?”, “Will this benefit my client or will I just benefit from getting to practice my techniques?”, “So much to do but where’s the time?”.
During a lunch break this week, in sort of a ranting way (might I add), I spilled my thoughts to my colleagues in my prac group. These questions were met with hums of agreement, followed by the rest of the girls voicing their very similar thoughts and reflections. When we wrapped up the conversation, it was unanimously agreed that it is just week 2 of the block, and with feelings of overwhelm, frustration and much excitement that built up in block 1 (start of final year, thoughts of making it to graduation, being on prac daily, all that), we are still finding our feet and place in the community.
However, these thoughts remained in my head. I needed to know whether it is just us who are feeling this way or do similar thoughts cross the minds of everyone who enters this block. So I conducted a survey with a group of community service OTs who were in our position not too long ago - the UKZN OT class of 2023. The question posed to them was, “Do you believe that the OT curriculum prepares us for Community in OT4?”, followed by a WhatsApp poll with the options to select either ‘yes’ or ‘no’. From the 21 who voted, 21 voted ‘no’.
Tumblr media
When thinking up the pros and cons of our preparation for community block, my anxiety-filled brain automatically deviated to the cons first.
1. There is no concrete, laid-out theory for community on Learn. Unlike with psychosocial, paediatrics and physical, community doesn’t have the assessment process and intervention process glaring at us when we check our resources to help guide our practice.
2. The community lecturers are completely brilliant no doubt. However, lectures were covered during the shortest time-frame. This made grasping and retaining all the knowledge that much more difficult.
3. On that note of lectures, no aspect of OT has proved how learning the theory and practicing it differs SO drastically like community does. This is due to a number of reasons beyond the control of UKZN such as, the declining economic climate making resources more scarce, socio-economic factors that are diversifying as time progresses, underlying racism through the rise of Xenophobia in our communities, a lack of understanding of the value of OT to oneself. We can never fully prepare ourselves for this prior to the block.
4. To better prepare ourselves for a full community block, a previous year prac block should include spending some time in the community to acclimatise.
However, there are also pros on UKZN’s approach to community block.
1. We were taught Psychosocial, Physical and Paediatrics in previous years. Since community is a mix of seeing a variety of diagnoses, we have the knowledge of how to treat these conditions.
2. Although this is conducted by the previous students who have completed the block, it is still facilitated by UKZN. Handovers. Without them, we would truly be lost on where to begin.
3. Through retelling of real-life community stories, we feel a strong connection to the community members and a stronger urgency to leave our mark as best as we can.
4. Although all the community placements are in Durban, South Africa, there are great differences in terms of resources available, socioeconomic deficiencies and racial groups that major in each community. Through the weekly tuts with a combination of all the block members and supervisors, the knowledge we gain is priceless.
I therefore conclude that NO, my classmates/colleagues and I do not believe that we are adequately prepared for life in community. Although we are having the most fulfilling experience thus far, we can only hope that we will make our mark by June 14th, despite everything.

Barbie
Tumblr media
“Humans only have one ending, ideas live forever”
I talk about movies a lot. I watch and listen to movie reviews just as much. I am very much in ~the conversation~ when it comes to movies and TV shows. So much so that I find I tend to over intellectualise these media forms. I look at them as products to be dissected rather than art.
When I think about my favourite movies of all time, I don’t love them because of their artistic merit (although that is definitely a factor). I love them because of the way they make me feel. That yearning to stay in the world created, to make the movie last just a little longer. The ever present desire to watch it all again the second the credits start rolling.
Barbie is by no means a perfect movie. But it made me feel that way again.
Greta Gerwig is a filmmaker I have been familiar with for some time now. My quest to watch all Oscar nominated movies every year means I have seen all three of her directorial works. Each one has inched closer to my tastes, culminating in Barbie, a personal home run.
I particularly love Gerwig’s sensibility as a filmmaker, the tone she strikes is unabashedly feminine. There is a certain softness to her approach that feels like a warm hug I am growing to love.
Barbie is no different. This truly feels like a movie made for ~the Girls~ and I love it. I love that this movie is not shy about its femininity. It doesn’t masquerade it and it is not ashamed to be a girl movie. In a landscape that is so dominated by the opposite, it is more than refreshing to find something so female that is also, so good.
For starters, the screenplay here is beyond brilliant. It is in equal parts smart and funny. You can tell Greta and her writing partner Noah Baumbach have a true understanding of and appreciation for the world and lore of Barbie. There are some deep cuts here, including characters such as Alan and Midge, as well as outfits and set design that are true to the spirit of Barbie, from the first iconic swimsuit to modern day.
I love that there are “multiples” of Barbie and Ken, all named Barbie and Ken. The fact that there are no stars in Barbieland: the Barbies just float from floor to floor? Genius.
It’s these little touches that demonstrate how much care has been put into this movie. Don’t get me started on the production and set design, it is among the greatest I have ever seen.
Something I think and talk about a lot is the current state of TV and Film. It is not controversial to say the landscape has been overtaken by IP driven content. Whether this is a necessary safeguard to avoid financial disappointment or viewers are truly hungry for original content is another discussion, but the point here is it is almost unheard of to craft a truly original movie or TV show nowadays. Everything must be derived from something else, and everything is often, awful.
It would have been so easy to make a by the numbers Barbie movie, something serviceable and somewhat entertaining but forgettable. Producer Margot Robbie and Director Greta Gerwig go a decidedly different route. This movie is manages to be both an entertaining blockbuster and a nuanced discussion of feminism today. When you think about it, the Barbie doll perfectly lends to conversations like these, and Gerwig more than pulls it off.
When it comes to performances and characters in this movie, there is a clear stand out. And that is Ryan Gosling’s Ken. This performance is beyond brilliant, I would wager the best in Gosling’s career. He perfectly understands the tone this movie is striking and gives it an 11 in every scene he is part of. His every expression is perfect, and his timing is impeccable. Comedic performances often don’t get the praise they deserve. Ken is by far the highlight of the movie, and it would simply not succeed without Gosling’s performance here.
Gerwig’s decision to make Ken’s character such a key aspect of the film is, in my opinion, the secret to its success. Putting Ken in the position of women in the real world is a subtle and brilliant way to drive the point of the movie home and another example of the brilliant writing on display here.
Much has been made of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s lack of nominations for this film in the Best Actress and Best Director categories at this year’s Oscars. The topic has unfortunately become politicised, and getting too involved in the discourse regarding this is enough to make any sane person’s head spin.
Putting all that to one side, I really do think both Robbie and Gerwig were deserving of nominations for their work here. Having said that, I don’t think Ryan Gosling’s nomination is a sleight of any kind, or a knock against feminism. His performance was far and away the best part of the movie, and if by some miracle he wins for this, I would be absolutely elated.
I don’t doubt that Margot Robbie will win her Oscar someday, she keeps putting out really interesting work as a producer. Further, Gerwig stands a chance in screenplay for Barbie, and I personally find that the category she would deserve it in the most. In conclusion, the snub is a shame, but not the end of the world.
Speaking of the Oscars, a trend I find rearing its head time and again is films that are true cultural moments being overlooked, only for us to realise their full potential after the fact. It is often difficult to tell which movies will stand the test of time and which will be forgotten within a year. But it is beyond apparent to me that Barbie did something unique this year. It made an insane amount of money and broke box office records while also having a significant cultural impact. The famous Barbenheimer phenomenon was unlike any of us have seen in recent memory. People flocked to the theatres in droves to experience the double feature, myself included. In a society where our attention is becoming more and more fractured, it was incredible to see everyone do something together again. Barbie was part of an actual watercooler moment, and we shouldn’t take that for granted.
Not only was the movie a cultural reset, the marketing was just as impressive. The “This Barbie is…” posters released, the red carpet outfits paying homage to classic Barbie looks, the unabashed wearing of pink and constant, “Hi, Barbie!” greetings. It is easy to forget how much of a moment this movie was. It had a cultural impact we can’t truly quantify, and I would hate to watch it go unrewarded in its time.
Having said all of this, Barbie is certainly not a perfect movie. While the story elements concerning Ken soared, those involving the Mattel executives faltered for me. There were a good few laughs elicited- I’m not one to find Will Ferrell that funny, but he was amazing here- but overall this portion of the movie just dragged, especially in contrast to how compelling the rest was.
I also found the third act to be a little sloppy. The grand finale where all the characters meet felt a little weak, likely because the Mattel executives were involved again. I honestly think cutting them out would have significantly improved the movie as a whole.
I mentioned earlier that this movie felt like it was made for the girls. More than that, it felt like it was made for me. I recognised almost every side character from some TV show I’ve watched over the years. The sense of humour was a hit almost every time. Not to mention, Dua Lipa is my favourite musical artist ever. Her cameo and song were just SO perfect for me. (Not to be outdone, “I’m Just Ken” will go down in power ballad history, and “What Was I Made For?” is a masterpiece)
It’s easy to get caught up in the discourse surrounding a film, and to let that inform how we feel about the movie itself. Especially in a world where everyone (including me) has something to say. But I’m putting that all to one side. The Barbie movie is really special to me. I love it in a deeply personal way that I can’t explain no matter how long my review is. There was a moment in the theatre where I laughed out loud and said “That is ME!” This movie felt like both a mirror and a lens. I am so beyond happy to see it get so many nominations and so much love. I think it would be so fitting for it to win big at the Oscars, the ultimate celebration of film. Because Barbie reminded me what a movie can do, how it can speak to something you didn’t know needed to be said. And most importantly, how it can make you feel.
To quote once again, “Humans have only one ending, ideas live forever.” I hope the Barbie movie lives on for a very long time.

The second episode of Dickinson Season 2 felt like everything hit its mark, with so much force; it not only worked, but it was invigorating and inspiring. So many threads came together, and the tapestry they wove was brilliant. This was what was missing from the season premiere.
The episode’s poem, its conceit, and its larger story all aligned in perfect harmony (as in Season 1’s second episode); fame is indeed a fickle food, one best not consumed. Emily’s own mounting tendencies towards solitude and obscurity (helped along, of course, by Edward and Austin), nudged further by Mrs Dickinson’s glory-seeking on the cattle show baking contest circuit, finally meet the stark warning from Nobody, whose purpose we now divine.
It’s fascinating how Sue is being set up as the one in opposition to both of her Dickinsons. She’s so far now from the girl Emily reminded us (and Sue) about in the series premiere, the one who jointly promised never to get married and to write poems together. Now Sue seeks fame for Emily, and while there is at least a small portion of that quest that is legitimately for Emily’s benefit, that her brilliance could change the world and must be known, there is another, more bourgeois aspect: Sue’s own fame, status, and standing is elevated by being the one to “discover,” or reveal, Emily. Lavinia’a calling Sue an “influencer” the prior episode is spot-on.
Sue also stands in contrast to her husband; while Austin is not trying to reign in her wild spending, it’s also clear that he sees much of it as superficial, as his comment about the money he gave Henry going towards something worthwhile reveals. And, of course, the renewed issue of a child. Austin’s point to Edward earlier in the episode about Sue not being able to spend before rings true, but at the same time I wonder whether she is also trying to fill an emptiness in her heart, or her life, with things. Sue’s “take care of me” comment after Austin raises the question of children makes me wonder how attentive he is to her, how present he is in their marriage. Because unlike Mrs Dickinson, who was raised to see the traditional housewife role, and the distance between husband and wife, as not only acceptable but also desired, Sue grew up with Emily…
(In that same vein, the proto-feminist/suffragette Lavinia once again this episode serves as a billboard for the changing values of the younger generation and the nation—as well as, also once again, a mirror for our times.)
I wonder whether they’re setting up an affair between Austin and Jane? We know in Season 1 Jane was trying to land Austin, though it was never clear whether that was because she truly was interested in/attracted to him or because her father declared he was the most eligible match for her. But here, and beyond the conversation about Henry’s payment—and the joint disappearance that followed—Jane and Austin have similar interests and run in similar circles—the Shakespeare club, and even the sewing/suffragette circle, where Jane and her minions participate with Austin’s sisters. (Sue, by contrast, despite being Emily’s best friend and sharing most of those interests and beliefs, never was shown at either. Presumably because of her orphan status, Sue could not be a “young woman of leisure” like the others—but now she is making up for lost time, becoming a society figure the likes of which Jane could only dream. Sue’s usurpation of Jane’s society role begat Jane’s usurpation of Sue’s role in Austin’s marriage?)
I do wonder about Bowles—although he at least is quick to throw up a stop sign for Emily’s potential attraction to him. But he is also seeking to raise or cement his stature as a person of importance by introducing the region to what’s new, and “discovering” an amazing female poet would be a massive coup. All of these various forces at play make me very sympathetic to the historical Dickinson’s apparent decision to remain unknown.
Emily’s live composing of the poem with Bowles was sublime (and it did not hurt that I felt kinship with the way she brought lines and verses into existence—though unlike a great like Dickinson, I have never done it live, for an audience). That scene…if the entire rest of the episode had been hot garbage, that scene would have lifted the episode to greatness, but it got to serve as a golden crown to an already stellar episode.
More of this, please! (I hope! 🤞)

Choose violence - Spider-Man. 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22.
1. Raimiverse Mary Jane Watson, easily. 3. NOPE. That'd take way too long to find!
4. "No Way Home saved MCU Spidey 'cause they fixed their shit and listened to all the fan complaints, period! No way was this always the set plan or else they'd never had made him Iron Boy to start with!" 6. Both the Peter/Mary Jane AND Peter/Gwen Stacy stans. If anything could make a good case for shipping Peter/Harry... 7. Carnage. He's hard to make engaging in canon as is, but his disproportionate popularity among fans is what I really hate. 8. There are many, but off the top of my head: every negative thing expressed about Raimi!MJ and MCU!MJ, the notion that Eddie Brock/Venom is some essential aspect of Spider-Man that has to be done and done right, and the purist idea that Spider-Man has some inflexible, stone-set canon mythos that must be adhered to in all adaptations or else it's some grave disservice to Spider-Man that fails to do the character and source material any justice (wonder if the whole "canon event" thing in AtSV is partially a shot at that).
9. Which canon? :P
10. The rampant purism, sexism, racism, and double standards. 12. Raimi!MJ, Spectacular!Sally Avril, 2017!Anya Corazon, and the Hobgoblin in general. Oh, and I also unironically like Michael Morbius and believe he deserves morb love! 16. Going back to MJ and Gwen, the "blind date build-up/party girl phase" for MJ and "the Death of Gwen Stacy" for Gwen. Lightning struck once, but trying to apply these to other iterations of Spider-Man comes off not only as forced but incredibly dated and dull.
17. More crossovers. The Spiderverse is practically beckoning us to try that out and see what we come up with! 18. The 2017 Marvel's Spider-Man series. It inevitably falls in the shadow of the 90's animated series and The Spectacular Spider-Man, but it's a solid take on Spider-Man in its own right and delivered some truly brilliant stuff, especially with its take on Doc Ock. 19. Aside from Morbius? The Spot. Not the new menacing version from AtSV, I mean the wimpy, whiny one from a single episode of the 90's animated series! The way he was written and handled was so bad yet so pivotal to the later proceedings in the plot that it crosses the line into So Bad It's Good for me. 20. The Clone Saga in the 616 comics, Season 4 and most of Season 5 in the 90's animated series, the Venom arcs of The Spectacular Spider-Man, the Cellar arc of Marvel's Spider-Man, and the Amazing Spider-Man film duology in general. 21. The Death of Gwen Stacy, Kraven's Last Hunt, and nearly everything to do with Venom and Carnage in the comics, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) back when it was getting hype online, and yes, Into The Spiderverse, which remains a very, very solid movie but not the best Spidey film and in retrospect it was merely a warm-up for what we've got now in Across The Spiderverse and Beyond The Spiderverse. 22. The motherfucking Hobgoblin! Namely Roderick Kingsley as the original one in the comics, and the 90's animated series' version of Jason Philip Macendale. Easily one of my top favorite Spider-Man villains who deserved better in canon, and still deserves more appreciation and adaptations.

Breaking Stereotypes: The Diversity in Fanfiction
An essay in defense of fanfiction. Written on the 17th of December, 2020.
Fanfiction, commonly shortened to fanfics or fics, could be defined as a work of fiction based on a pre-existing book, movie, television show, play, etc. written by a fan of said media. Over the years, fanfiction has gained a double-edged sword reputation. Torn between being widely read by a large audience but simultaneously never being truly taken seriously. It is seen, by many, as a teenage girl's projection of pop culture. And I could honestly see where they're coming from, with the numerous self-insert One Direction fanfiction that granted fans to look at what lies in the possible, and even the infamous best-seller E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey starting out as a sex-induced Twilight fanfiction. However, while the term has gained popularity during the 21st century with the rise of the internet and fanfiction websites such as Wattpad, Fanfiction.net, Archive of Our Own, and many more, there is a deeper history behind these fan-written pieces of literature. Ahlin (2016) lists several classic works of literature that may be classified as fanfiction. The first on the list is John Milton's Paradise Lost, which essentially is his take on the characters from the bible. Dante's Inferno is a self-insert fanfiction about his journey with the poet Virgil in Hell. Even Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was based on a poem entitled The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet. Others mentioned on the list were James Joyce's Ulysses, Virgil's The Aeneid, Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers, and a few more. The main takeaway from this article is that, taking into account the definition of fanfiction without any existing biases, fanfiction is a large diverse genre that extends far beyond the work of an adolescent's naïve imagination. There exists both good and bad fanfiction. With every cliché Y/N one-shot comes along a brilliant reimagining of pre-existing characters. See, the diversity in fanfiction not only lies in what it is, but also in what it is for. In present times, it could be said that fanfiction is a form of expression. With a large part of the genre's demographic being adolescents to early teens, its main purpose is to serve as a creative outlet for these young writers to explore aspects of their imagination. And, yes, a lot of fanfiction tend to be cringey and filled with cliché tropes; but you don't crucify the thirteen-year-old preteen who wrote Harry Potter self-insert fanfiction for not meeting the literary standards. An article by Aragon (2019) presents a passage that perfectly captures the notion, "When I was 13, I had a major crush on a certain fictional character. My fics were full of phrases such as "gorgeous cerulean orbs," "manly hunks of muscle," and the like. Reviewers were kind enough to be positive about my amateurish fangirl postings—mostly because they also liked this character—but also pointed out my uses of clichés and overwriting. As a result, I learned to be sensitive to these types of bad writing. Today, I've published original fiction, and no one has ever called me out on a florid writing style. I think if a teacher had simply red-penciled my childish scribbles, I might have been so discouraged as to never write again". We all have to start somewhere, and fanfiction is honestly a good stepping stone for aspiring writers. It's essentially a platform where aspiring writers could post their works to a wide audience, there are no deadlines to be met, no standards to follow but one's own. Admittedly, that's where I started to. All the YA novels I owned only fueled my love for reading, but my interest in writing arrived the moment I considered writing Harry Styles fanfiction at age thirteen. Burt (2017) said, "Writers who started out with fanfic and then found the proper mix of critique and encouragement could go on to publish "real" (and remunerated) work". A lot of people who write fanfiction are also amateur writers trying to find their own voice. It's good practice. I, for one, as both an aspiring professional writer and a creative writing student, have tracked my noticeable improvements and transformation in my writing through the fanfiction I've written over the years. From writing predictable tropes with language that sounds too try-hard to being able to formulate coherent plot points and engaging character dynamics. Fanfiction, like any form of literature, grows. Moving on from amateur fanfiction, as we move forward in the spectrum, there lies in the shallow waters of the internet, well-written fanfiction. Fanfiction that is arguably better than some published YA novels I've read. Not all fanfiction is written by preteens or sex-deprived teenage girls, sometimes they're written by people with enough talent and knowledge to address the speculative what-ifs regarding some of our favorite characters — or in this incoming example, people. Real Person Fiction (RPF) is a subgenre of fanfiction that reimagines the roles and lives of real people, typically celebrities. I've read my fair share of RPFs, and some of them have ended up being my favorite pieces of literature to read. "I tap on it because the ticks are familiar to me. It blocks out the other noises." This is a line from one of my favorite fanfictions entitled Noisy Thoughts. It is said by the main character, Wendy, in the earlier chapters. It is such a compelling way to introduce the main character without giving too much away. See, in the story, instead of being a famous celebrity, Wendy is merely a college student with a strange affinity to sounds that 'tick'. Her seemingly quiet world is suddenly thrown into a pit of confusion at the entrance of her new roommate, Joohyun. Together, the two help each other deal with the emotional baggage cluttering their apartment. With an interesting cast of characters, each with their own depth and interesting subplot, the flow of the story keeps the readers on edge. As most fanfictions are, you might've guessed right that it is a romance story at first glance, but it is also so much more. This story deals with trauma and mental illness in a way that leaves me captivated, I feel for each of the characters and what they go through. I would go as much as to say it is better than how some professionally published stories tackle sensitive topics such as addressing trauma and healing from these traumatic experiences. I suppose the only downfall is that chapters are posted once every six months at the most; and with fifteen chapters into the story, it's still not finished. Another story I love from the same fandom (meaning Wendy, Irene, and other K-POP idols are also involved) is entitled The Purity Club. While this isn't as heartbreaking as Noisy Thoughts, it still tugs on my heartstrings and even makes me uncomfortable at times when the scenario just hits too close to home. The story makes use of the celebrities' birthnames as opposed to their stage names, so Wendy is referred to as Seungwan, and Irene is referred to as Joohyun, the same goes for the rest of the characters. The Purity Club starts with the characters attending the same boarding school, Joohyun being a devoted member of her church and Seungwan who always seems to cause trouble wherever she goes. It sounds like a cliché synopsis, and the premise is taken from an overdone trope of the troublemaker and the good girl. But the way this story progresses, it just left me speechless. This one tackles story arcs such as abuse, internalized homophobia, societal homophobia, healing from trauma and shaking off bad habits, and many more. It seems that every arc the plot passes has me holding my breath for what's to come next.
Although, my favorite aspect of this story has to be the character development. Joohyun's most notably, one of the characters who has gone through the most transformation throughout the entire story. She starts as the perfect daughter, almost blindly obedient to her parents' commands and with a straightforward grip on her religious faith. As she goes through and processes the events that transpire in the story, she learns to be her own person. Battling years of bigotry taught to her at a young age and coming to terms with her sexuality, and despite all the bad memories, she still actively practices her faith in God. All of the main cast has some degree of exceptional character development in this story, arguably better than how some mainstream TV shows like Riverdale develop their characters. The writer took their time in letting the characters grow without losing track of the foundation of what makes these characters click. Fanfiction is truly a diverse genre; it deserves more credit than people give it. It deserves to be taken seriously. As I've mentioned before, there exists good and bad fanfiction. But doesn't every form have its good and bad content? Frankly, I'm exhausted at the world's refusal to view fanfiction as a legitimate genre when some classical works can be considered fanfiction themselves. There exists a gold mine of well-written literary works with compelling plots and satisfying development deep within the confines of fanfiction websites. I believe it's time for the world to see it.
