Adding some more because I’m having THOUGHTS
Rhaenyra probably feels like she’s someone who has control over her sexual actions. She (a teenage girl) thinks going to the brothel with Daemon (a grown man) and almost sleeping with him was, at the very least, a mutual decision. When it really isn’t. (She also sleeps with Criston when he’s a grown man, and Harwin is also an adult when they first meet).
So, when Alicent has been visiting her father in his chambers to try become his wife, Rhaenyra probably doesn’t see it as Alicent been coerced into it. Rhaenyra assumes Alicent also is acting of her own free will and on her own sexual desires (or political ambitions) because Rhaenyra also believes she was doing the same. She knows Alicent knows how she feels about her mother dying for the son she couldn’t be, and now she’s finally good enough to be her father’s heir, Alicent provides a son, essentially dooming her, and replaces her recently deceased mother. The ultimate betrayal to Rhaenyra.
Alicent, having being denied the decision to pick a partner and having to sleep with/have children with a man she doesn’t want, must see Rhaenyra’s “choices” as just that a choice and it’s a slap in the face. “You got to sleep around with who you wanted, lied by omission about it, and received no punishment, whilst I did everything I was told and still suffer for it.” She thinks “You got a better marriage than me, in spite of that, and chose to have bastards anyway and no one will acknowledge it”. Alicent thinks Rhaenyra has more choice than she actually does, marrying Laenor wasn’t a choice, and Alicent doesn’t know Laenor is gay and that him and Rhaenyra tried to do their duty but failed.
They were both coerced, groomed and forced into things but fail to recognise it in each other because, honestly, they don’t recognise it in themselves fully.
It’s kinda heartbreaking how most of the animosity between Rhaenyra and Alicent is just misunderstanding.
Not just Alicent misunderstanding Viserys dying words but Rhaenyra and Alicent misunderstanding each other and the patriarchal system they both suffer under.
Rhaenyra and Alicent have polar opposite responses/coping mechanisms to the (unwanted) expectations placed on them. Alicent is very “duty is the death of love” and thinks doing as she is told, exactly as she is told, will save her. Rhaenyra is the opposite, she’s “love is the death of duty” and makes her discomfort known and actively tries to go against what she’s told she has to do.
They’re both suffering under the same circumstances but can’t recognise it in the other, perhaps due to perfectly placed differences. Like Alicent not being able to forgive Rhaenyra for having bastards because she was forced into having children with a man she didn’t love when she wasn’t ready. Or Rhaenyra not being able to forgive Alicent for marrying Viserys because she feels she’s replaced her mother and provides the son she couldn’t be. (I acknowledge they’re also missing some info here too, ei them having no choice in either of these matters.)
It all builds up and explodes in the dagger scene. Rhaenyra believes Alicent to be living under a cloak of righteousness and Alicent believes Rhaenyra is flaunting all to do as she pleases.
“We have more in common than we sometimes allow.” Alicent, girl, you have no idea how right you were.
Not sure what point I’m trying to make, I just love both these little disasters. #TeamTheGirliesDeservedBetter.

the crazy thing is that malevolent really seems like it's gonna be one of those "there's nothing actually special about this guy, he just has very bad luck." stories but no. there IS something special about that guy. there's a REASON this is happening to him. this story could NOT have happened to anyone else the way it did to him. somehow, for some reason, arthur lester is special. and even more absurdly, this specific version of arthur lester is special. that's insane.
so much of the horror genre is all about how these things could happen to anyone, but malevolent wants you to explicitly know that arthur lester is important. arthur lester is the reason this story is happening. arthur lester is different, in some strange way that even he doesn't fully understand.
and that's what makes him the main character, not just the protagonist.

u know that orpheus and eurydice trend on tiktok about looking back? its kinda making me think of percico constantly trying to keep sight of the other and never managing it. percy turning back just a moment too late, after nico's already stepped into the shadows and disappeared. nico turning back just a moment too early and looking away from percy's happiness, completely missing the way percy looks back at him.
the love is in the looking back. and they keep doing it, in spite of the fact that they're both convinced that they're the only one looking.
"i don't care if you don't love me enough to do the same, i'll keep looking for you."
they make me insane

Unpopular opinion but of course Pen had an easier time keeping her love in these past two seasons, of course she wasn’t broken by it the same way he was, comparing his feelings from s3 to her‘s pre 2.08 is not possible especially cause they were more of a crush she needed to survive
she needed them cause she‘s trapped in this abusive life and she‘s a wallflower and she just wants out and he‘s this galant hero in her fantasies saving her and he‘s perfect and she daydreams about him coming to save her to keep herself sane and whole(ish)
It‘s not … sexual, it‘s not about him, not really it’s not sth that’s set in a reality that she expects to ever be fullfilled, it‘s about this romantic ideal, of being saved from her wall and she just happens to be casting him as the hero cause he‘s just about flawless and charming enough while also absolutely unattainable keeping it a save save fantasy
While he fell into all consuming, unconditional love (alongside her) in season 3 the minute he let himself acknowledge her as an adult woman
Which is not to say that it wasn’t hard and soulcrushing at times for her or less real and less worth and not to say that by the end of part 1 she doesn’t feel about him as he does for her but it‘s different, it‘s not love love
And then he says those things in 2.08 and suddenly he’s no longer perfect but he‘s human and then he comes back from his travels and he‘s a man and he acts like everyone else and and he‘s so flawed and and she’s so unimpressed but also she‘s finally letting herself see that and acknowledge that cause for all this talk about how she knows him so very well she‘s never let herself see that he‘s also got a less than perfect dark side … and when she does that’s when she truly starts to love him unconditionally the same he does her
(it‘s the same for him btw and it‘s precisely why he doesn’t have acknowledgable romantic feelings for her cause to him Pen is perfect and she‘s clean and therefore she’s to be kept in a separate box from everyone else away from any and all mansly urges so to speak)
