A Christmas Wish from Actors:

I work as a performer. This time of year I have many gigs dressed as various Christmas characters in public places.

I appreciate that 'Christmas' means different things to different people. However, I feel that the following needs to be said.

If you are a religious person (mainly Christians at this time of year) it is NOT ok, or appreciated, to accost performers in seasonal costume and lecture them, in public, in front of others about the 'true meaning of Christmas'.

Firstly, we have been hired by a client and are being paid to deliver this work as per their instruction. Being stopped and lectured by religious people impacts our ability to do our job properly.

It's also unfair. When in character and in public the performer must maintain an open and pleasant demenour without prejudice. Regardless of our own personal beliefs. To target us for your religious lecture because we cannot answer back or contradict you is predatory, offensive and hated.

If you are one of those people who engage in this sort of preachy behaviour then PLEASE STOP IT NOW!

Actors have a right to a workplace free from harassment and intimidation. Your spiritual beliefs do not entitle you to infringe upon that.

"the true meaning of Christmas is-" you're going to say Christ, right? right?? and not erase the fact that this is a fundamentally religious holiday by claiming the true meaning is not religious at all and is instead some feel-good secular vibes or basic value like "family" or "kindness"???

i dont care if secular people want to celebrate Christmas in their own non-religious way and as a result they subscribe a different personal meaning to the holiday, but do NOT spout bullshit about how the "true meaning" is irreligious and co-op the actual reason for the holiday to make it more palatable to your non-religious palate
