Ok while I was packing my suitcase for my hotel stay tomorrow, I had a thought for some back story here, so let's dig in a little bit!

After Tron was turned to stone by the powers of his best mates - that being Flynn the earth pony, Ram the pegasus & Yori the unicorn - in order to stop the evil illness from taking over & making OP alicorn Tron go in full destructo mode, he was fashioned into a sort of monument where the battle took place in a random meadow.

Not realizing how long the duration of the spell would last, the trio began carving out a home base by Tron's fall, to keep watch over their old ally should he make a dreadful return & help him through any means possible. They built tall walls to keep the intruding outside world away & built a house which they would take place staying at while keeping watch. Eventually Yori decided to dedicate herself to the task of watching over her beloved, so she shooed away the other two so they could continue adventuring, seeing the world & doing everything they had wanted to do before the darkness invaded Tron's mind.

Time passed slowly, but things moved by in a blur just the same.

Yori, who never thought she'd overcome her heartbreak for Tron, met another pony who came from a nearby village to ask a number of questions about the mysterious fort in the woods. After learning of their story, the pony asked to stay and spruce up her property, as otherwise Yori lived surrounded by an impenetrable dark forest. Over months & months, he built beautiful gardens for her to enjoy & when spring finally came, the blooms opened & Yori's heart did too.... & she gladly accepted the newcomer's love.

As they happily set up a life there, they agreed to establish that the family's longstanding duty was to care for the gardens & to watch over the statue, should Tron ever come back to life. At a certain age, the oldest child would inherit the duty and pass it down for generations until the end of time, or until... we get the pair that messed everything up.

The last branch of this family tree unraveled when Yori's direct descendent fell for a sweet & kind donkey... which resulted in their child being a mule... which are basically incapable of having offspring of their own.

But, it all works out, because that's when the world shakes & the slumbering titan bursts out of his stoney prison, more confused & lost than anything else. The hundreds of years that passed him by while he was encased in stone blurred into amnesia that nearly wiped the anger & hate from his evil curse. Instead, Flint discovers Rinzler & WITHOUT HESITATION brings Rinz in under his wing [metaphorically, of course, as Flint is so much shorter than Rinz & he doesn't have wings so like. YEAH].

...

At some point down the line, memories return in a deluge & Rinzler can't help but feel betrayed & abandoned by his friends, who left him to rot & be some other far off generation's problem as his mates all lived good lives without him.

But after Flint & Rinz discover a passage written to Tron from Yori that was hidden away in a journal deep within the heart of the manor that she, Ram & Flynn built together that spelled out everything for the troubled alicorn.

She explained the purpose of them building the property around Tron's frozen state, to protect him & keep watch as time passed them all by. & though his friends all moved on, they never forgot one another with members of each line of their families constantly keeping in contact over Tron, himself.

So when Rinzler comes out of his state of despair, he realizes Yori never abandoned him & she had every right to move on & build a life for herself even without him there. Still, she made it her family's duty to watch over Tron, for that fateful day he would escape.

& then, there he is with Flint, a direct descendent of Yori who has her smile, her laugh & her endearing kindness... & life isn't so bad after all.

No magical championing of his evil curse necessary. After realizing how much others cared for him this whole long while, he happily settles there with the overjoyed gardener mule... with Rinz being so thankful to have such dedicated friends who made it their entire purpose to support Tron whenever he returned♡

Love can be between an ancient hero who was corrupted by evil magics & a simple gardener who's the only one who still sees some good in him & that's just fine with me♡

I hate people who are like “go read the comics” or “this is so OOC” or “x would never do/say that”

Because like, when it comes to the Batfam/young heroes, canon is SO confusing:

Both teen titans/titans and Young Justice are Canon, but they can’t exist at the same time since Dick and Tim have been on both teams

In teen titans/TTG miss martian/m’gann and Artemis don’t exist (the same with Aqualad I think)

And in YJ starfire, cyborg, and raven don’t exist.

In TTG starfire doesn’t like Robin back, but in teen titans they’re dating.

In TTG Robin hated Kidflash, but in YJ Dick and Wally are best friends.

In both TTG, Teen titans, and TITENS, Dick is the Robin on the team, but in the DCAMU Damian is Robin and his love interest is Raven.

In the comics Jason is the happy, exited, and impulsive Robin, but in TITANS he’s super aggressive and just not like he is in the comics

In YJ Conner is vastly different from In the comics.

In the comics Artemis, Roy(Arsenal), Kory(starfire) and Jason(red hood) are in a group called ‘The Outlaws’, but in other comics, and shows they don’t even exist together.

In YJ Artemis joins the YJ, but Roy gives up being speedy and becomes Red Arrow. In YJ it’s revealed that Roy is actually a clone of the original, and the OG ends up becoming Arsenal, though totally different from his comic counterpart.

And as icing on the cake, Kory doesn’t even exist in YJ.

Some of the comics also totally fuck up canon, along with some of the games (like Gotham knights), but I’ve never played the games or read the comics, so I can’t really say a lot about that.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that people should let others enjoy their media in peace, even if it’s OOC to what you believe is “true canon”

(NOTE: I’ve seen a lot of people both defend and hate on new 52 because of the direct opposition it has with other comics, yet it is still canon. It just goes to show that nothing and everything is canon, no one is right and no one is wrong.)

As the day of the wedding approached, the anticipation and excitement grew to fever pitch. Everyone was in a whirlwind of preparations, from picking out final details to ensuring everything was perfect for the big day.

And for Jey, it was all happening at a time when his feelings for Jax were reaching a boiling point.

He found himself spending even more time with her, helping with last minute details and basking in her presence.

Every smile, every touch, every laugh was like a dagger to his heart.

But he couldn't help himself. He was drawn to her like a moth to a flame, unable to resist the pull of his growing affection. But she wouldn't want him back. Not truly.

Despite the growing tension between them, Jey did his best to maintain a facade of normalcy.

He tried to hide his true feelings, joking and laughing with the rest of the wedding party as they prepared for the big day.

But every time he caught Jax's eye, he felt a pang in his chest. He was aching to tell her how he truly felt, but the fear of rejection kept him silent.

As the hours ticked by, the time for the wedding drew near.

The venue was decorated beautifully, and the air was thick with excitement and joy.

He couldn't help but feel a bit of jealousy regarding all this wedding stuff. He was happy for his cousin getting to marry Iris, the love of his life but he also wondered.. when will it be his turn?

As the wedding ceremony began, Jey took his place at the altar, next to Jimmy near Roman.

He tried to focus on the moment, but his eyes kept drifting towards Jax.

She looked absolutely stunning in her bridesmaid dress, and he couldn't help but feel his heart flutter at the sight of her. She was beautiful. She was sweet, kind, soft when she felt safe and comfortable. He was her safe and comfortable and he wanted her more than anything.

The reception was in full swing, with music and laughter filling the air.

Jey sat at the table with his friends and family, trying to enjoy the festivities.

But he couldn't shake the feeling of longing that lingered in his heart.

Every so often, he would catch himself stealing glances at Jax, admiring her from afar.

As the night went on, the dance floor filled up, and the party reached its peak.

Jey sat at the table, watching everyone have fun, feeling a mix of emotions.

As the music played on, Jax spotted Jey sitting alone at the table.

She made her way over to him, a smile on her face. "Hey," she said, her voice soft and sweet. "You're not dancing?"

Jey's heart skipped a beat as he heard her voice. He looked up at her, trying to keep his composure.

"Nah, not really in the mood," he replied, forcing a casual tone.

"Well.. We pulled off a great wedding. Maybe we do make a really good team." Jax smiled, "I might have to take Jimmy's job as your tag team partner." She joked.

Jey couldn't help but chuckle at her joke.

"Yeah, I suppose you do make a good tag team partner," he said, trying to hide the hint of sadness in his voice.

Jax noticed the hidden emotion in his tone, she reached out and touched his hand gently.

"You okay, Jey?" she asked, her voice filled with concern.

Jey's heart fluttered at her touch, and he felt a rush of emotions surge through him.

He wanted to say something, anything, to let her know how he felt. But the fear of rejection kept him silent.

Instead, he just nodded, unable to meet her gaze.

The moment stretched on, and the weight of Jey's unspoken feelings became too much to bear.

He couldn't keep them bottled up any longer.

"Jax, there's something I need to tell you," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Jax's heart skipped a beat as she heard the seriousness in his voice.

She sat down next to him, her eyes locked on his face.

"What is it?" she asked, her own voice filled with a mix of anticipation and concern.

Jey took a deep breath, gathering his courage.

"I... I've been feeling things lately," he began, struggling to find the right words. "Feelings I never thought I'd feel."

Jax's heart was pounding in her chest as she listened to Jey's confession.

She could sense the vulnerability in his voice, and it was both thrilling and terrifying at the same time.

"I can't stop thinking about you," Jey continued, his voice trembling slightly. "You're always on my mind, and it's driving me crazy."

Jax's eyes widened in surprise as she heard Jey's words.

She hadn't expected this, and her heart was racing with a mix of emotions.

"Jey, I..." she started to say, but she couldn't find the words.

"I know our first date was a trainwreck, i know we fight like cats and dogs.. But if you just give me one do-over.." Jey says.

Jax was stunned into silence for a moment, her mind reeling from the confession.

She could hardly believe what she was hearing, but the vulnerability and sincerity in Jey's voice was undeniable.

After a moment, she found her voice again.

"One do-over?" she repeated, her eyes locked on his.

Jey nodded, his heart in his throat.

"I want to do things right this time," he said, his voice filled with determination. "I want to take you on a proper date, without the drama and without fighting."

Jax's heart skipped a beat again as she imagined the possibilities.

A proper date, with Jey. No fighting, no tension, just the two of them, enjoying each other's company.

She would have never thought about giving him a second chance before, but now...

"Okay," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

She was surprised by how quickly she had agreed, but there was no denying the flutter in her chest at the thought of being his.

Jey's eyes lit up with a mix of surprise and hope at her agreement.

"Really?" he asked, unable to hide the excitement in his voice.

Jax bit her lip, feeling a rush of emotions swirling within her.

She knew that she had been denying her feelings for him for a long time, but now that he had confessed his own feelings, it was impossible to keep them hidden any longer.

"Jey," she said, taking a deep breath. "I've been falling for you too."

Jey's heart soared at her confession, and he felt a wave of relief wash over him.

"You have?" he asked, his voice filled with wonder.

He couldn't believe it, but he knew that she wouldn't have said it if it wasn't true.

"I want you. I want you to cuddle, to watch movies with. I want you to take care of me. To be my Daddy Dom. If you'll have me." Jax responds the last part in a whisper. Not that anyone was paying attention to them, or could hear them over the music for that matter.

Jey's heart rate quickened even more at her confession, and his eyes widened in surprise.

He had never imagined that she would say something like that.

But as he looked at her, he could see the vulnerability in her eyes, the desire and longing that mirrored his own.

"I want all of that too," he whispered back, his voice filled with a newfound tenderness.

The tension between them was palpable, the air thick with desire and anticipation.

Jey's eyes darkened as he looked at her, his thoughts running wild with possibilities.

"Are you sure about this?" he asked, his voice low and gravelly.

Jax nodded, her heart racing with excitement and anticipation.

"I've never been more sure of anything in my life," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jey reached out and gently pulled her into his lap, his arms wrapping around her waist possessively.

He looked into her eyes, his gaze intense and full of desire.

"Then I'm all yours," he said, his voice a husky whisper.

Meanwhile, Lele was walking through the crowded wedding reception when she suddenly collided with someone, causing them to spill a drink all over her.

She looked up, annoyed and irritated, to see Zilla, Roman's younger cousin if she wasn't mistaken.

"Watch where you're going," Lele snapped, looking down at the mess on her dress.

The alcohol was already soaking into the fabric, staining it with a large wet spot.

Zilla, to Lele's irritation, seemed completely unfazed by the incident.

He just shrugged and said, "Damn girl, my bad."

Lele scowled at his nonchalance, feeling even more annoyed that he didn't seem to care about the damage he had caused.

"Your bad? That's all you have to say?" she said, crossing her arms in frustration.

Zilla chuckled and said, "Relax, it's just a dress. I'll buy you a new one."

"I don't need your money. I don't need you to buy me anything! Now if you'll excuse me.." Lele said.

Zilla raised an eyebrow, amused by her rejection.

"Feisty one, aren't you?" he said, his eyes roaming over her body.

"Oh fuck off" Lele rolled her eyes and walked away.

Zilla watched her walk away, a smirk playing on his lips.

He couldn't deny that he was intrigued by her attitude. Yeah, he wanted that...

The reception was drawing to a close, and Jey and Jax had spent the rest of the evening together, chatting and enjoying each other's company.

They had danced together, laughed together, and stolen countless kisses. It was the most perfect evening they could have imagined. He'd even been able to almost keep up with her durring their dance, despite Jax's years of professional training.

After saying goodbye to their friends and family, Jey and Jax made their way to his car.

The drive to his house was quiet and intimate, the two of them lost in their own thoughts as they reveled in the night's events.

As they arrived at his house, Jey turned to her with a smirk.

"We're finally alone," he said, his voice low and suggestive.

Jax felt a shiver run down her spine at his words, her heart rate quickening in anticipation.

She looked up at him, her eyes filled with desire and longing.

"And what do you plan on doing with that fact?" she asked, her voice sultry.

Jey smirked and leaned in closer, his breath hot against her ear.

"I have a few ideas," he whispered, his hand slowly running up her thigh.

Jey eventually rolled off of her, lying on his back next to her.

He draped an arm around her, pulling her close and holding her against his chest as they both slowly regained their composure.

They lay there in silence for a while, simply enjoying the closeness and the quiet intimacy of the moment.

Jey gently traced his fingers up and down her spine, his touch gentle and soothing.

Jax snuggled closer to him, resting her head on his chest and listening to the steady beat of his heart.

She could feel herself growing sleepy, the combination of their intense lovemaking and the warmth of his embrace lulling her into a peaceful state of relaxation.

"So..." Jax said

"So..." Jey echoed, his voice still a little hoarse from their earlier activities.

He caressed her, his touch affectionate and possessive.

"That was quite the main event, Jey Uso.." She smirked

Jey chuckled softly, a smirk spreading across his face as well.

"I aim to please," he said, his voice dripping with satisfaction.

Okay so thoughts about the building contest and such, here we go–

(this turned out so long, I'm so sorry–)

I applaud Alan and his team, because the only reason I'm able to infer so much from these wordless videos is because of their body language animations and clever world building.

Okay so I went back and rewatched (my favorite thing to do). The beginning of this portion of Green's arc starts in "The Building Contest", aka AvM 2. Which takes place approximately two years after the og Animation vs Minecraft. We are early in the timeline.

Anyway, Orange begins the contest, and Green is seen to be very particular about what blocks he uses. He lays down some blocks, looks back at the reference picture, and then apparently decides they aren't good enough. He starts over.

End of the video, Green has created a lovely build, earning himself the trophy. He is very excited about this; he dances around, punches the air, etc. In response to this, Blue and Yellow work together (like the dynamic duo they are) and toss TNT onto his build, blowing it up.

A fascinating start. In simply this video, you could defend Green with "Well, Yellow and Blue were just being bad sports. He earned the win!" That may be true. Let's carry on.

Next video: "Build Battle", aka AvM 17. Two years later (approximately). They've lived through that first big adventure: The Nether, Purple and the End, Skyblock, all of that.

Green's first build this time around is extremely detailed, and he receives the trophy once again. However, his attitude seems challenging. Almost a "what are you gonna do, not give it me? Look what I did." kind of attitude. And then he Fortnite dances on the losers. Not a great look, Green.

Now, the video isn't over, but I have to mention something. I believe that we can infer at this time that this has happened before, and has been happening, from Yellow's reaction.

Yellow approaches Orange and begins to scheme a way to get Green to lose a build battle. I don't think someone would plot their friend's downfall unless 1) the winning had gotten to the point where the game was no longer fun, and 2) if the winner's attitude was one of annoyingly-confidant arrogance.

The next challenge for the build battle is a toy robot. Machines and robotics are Yellow's thing– literally two episodes before he'd taught his friends the basics of redstone. Should be an easy win, right?

Well.

Yellow makes a working robot; its eyes light up, the limbs move, it can jump up-and-down. Yellow seems proud of himself, and he and Green share a moment of tense eye contact before they move on. Blue's robot build is good, but then Green brings out his robot.

This is where we delve into one of my headcanons for this scene. I believe that Green cheated here. You simply can't build a robot that complex in vanilla Minecraft, and Green been shown to have cheated in contests before (remember his Minecraft simulator in "Redstone Academy"? I don't think either Green or Orange were being honest there)

Even if Green didn't cheat, and created his robot through completely legitimate means, that doesn't excuse his taunting of his friends after his win, and the fact his robot chased Red and Blue with a diamond sword after they tried and failed to blow it up.

On to another build battle. Interestingly enough, it seems as though Yellow and Co have stopped trying to sabotage Green's success. They continue through the building process as normal.

And then Green summons a Wither. Completely by accident, he was thinking only of what would look most authentic and didn't realize what he was doing. Regardless, the Wither is here and it demolishes most of Green's build and starts to fight him.

While this is going on, the rest of the Color Gang are carrying on as if nothing is happening. They inspect Red's build, then Yellow's (complete with redstone-activated teeth and claws!), where Green attempts to get their attention before getting chased by the Wither. They ignore him. At Blue's build, it is even more clear that they are doing this on purpose. Part of Blue's build gets disintegrated but Blue just casually rebuilds it. Doesn't even look in the direction of the fight in the background.

They continue to Green's... remains of a build. They are not impressed, and then Orange presents the trophy to Blue. Which I think was a fun way to subvert expectations that Yellow would have won because he'd been set up to rival Green in this episode, but we carry on.

What next? The Wither attacks them and the video ends. We have not gotten a build battle video since.

So what do we make of this? Green technically got what he deserved, being all cocky and such. I find it fascinating that we haven't gotten more build battle videos. Sure, it might be because Alan prefers the Noteblock episodes, but in universe?

I think the Gang might have stopped doing build battles, or at least made them less of a deal. They have other things to compete about; see "The Ultimate Minecart Race". And I think Green may have mellowed out a bit.

It is very interesting that between these videos and "The Prank", where his smug personality was on full display, that there was a trend in the Actual Shorts where he would keep getting hurt. Or at least be the butt of the joke.

This was early on. They hadn't gone through some of the craziest adventures yet, where their friendship would be tested, and their very lives put in danger.

I think Green has matured; yes, he's still ridiculously competitive and has an arrogant streak a mile long. But he seems to have focused his skills– honing them, instead of trying to the best at everything. Specifically with music, something that can be done together. Even if he still manages to make it competition. It is still something that brings people together– after all, it's how he was able to reach Purple.

Green is still competitive. But he has become so much more than that. He is focused, determined, confidant, kind, compassionate. A wondrous musician, and likely a terrible cook. He is nuanced and I love him for it.

GOD I LOVE THIS ANALYSIS SO MUCH I never noticed that Green mellows out and matures throughout his arc and that’s so real omggg. The idea of Green honing his skills in music not for the sake of being better than anyone but because it brings people together is so good omggg im injecting this into my blood stream.

IT ALSO NEVER STRUCK ME THAT THEY STOPPED HAVING BUILDING CONTESTS AFTER THE LAST ONE THATS TRUE they probably were looking for other ways to compete with each other that’s fair for everyone involved.

And I love love LOVE how Green’s competitive nature is still there even when he has become more compassionate and mature. Since it feels that’s a pretty big stable for his character; being the one that’s good at everything and brags about it.

It’s kinda like how Purple is still a trickster/schemer at heart even though it’s clear he’s much happier and isn’t afraid to be more expressive now. Cause without those traits, the characters just kinda lose the charm and nuance they initially had. So I always get very happy when characters development as people but that trait that gives them so much charm is still there in a way.

Buckle up. This is long.

Last night after dinner w/my fam I watched the SAG awards so I am a little behind on the conversation around the Chris Evans Clown Show Comedy Hour. However I read a couple of asks received by @nancydrewwouldnever about how he’s been looking like the Raggedy Andy version of his normal self these past few months and I couldn’t agree more.

I thought so watching the SMA videos People put out.

Back during my more naïve days, I just thought he was possibly exhausted and that could very well still be true. But after the rabbit hole I’ve been down for the past couple of months, I am of the opinion he's exhausted for a different reason than work requirements. Which is just that – my opinion: observation mixed with speculation.

I don’t think this RS – if it is rooted in PR like I think it is – was ever intended to last this long. From what I have gathered, the Netflix show and movie for which AB would have benefited the most having a lot of attention were originally supposed to both release in the first half of 2022. One or both were delayed, the show being very delayed -from first/second quarter all the way to the last quarter of the year. So not only did she lose out on a bump for the movie, but by the time her show finally launched it pretty much had already been axed by NF. So when Mr. SMA 2022 does the CP Marathon (horribly) with her, the only project she has going on at the time is hanging by a thread.

That's her fault for being lazy and entitled. A million golden opportunities were missed by her/her team, but I feel like Chris wasn’t going to sell anything very well anyway, as he likely was being pissy about this situationshit lasting so long. Which led me to thinking that “laser focus” press question was a plant to tie back to the earlier article BUT made me think it could possibly have been contrived as a way to signify the end of their "RS" had it gone to plan. The question would allow room for him to insinuate he was single again and “focused on finding the right partner” to “pour himself into” bc “awe, shucks, I’m just so unlucky in love…” 💀

BUT THAT CAN’T HAPPEN… he can’t signal the end of something that hasn’t yet been announced. So it looked to the viewer, and especially his fandom, that he was signaling his singlehood – and for his fans, to debunk the rumors flying around about his Lolita. NOW he has to stutter around and trap himself in word prisons and go take a quick pap sprint the same time as SMA announcement bc that’s when the show drops and do more photos and BS to sell the OVER year-long narrative when they were really prepped to do a 9ish-mos storyline. All the OG pics and scares (IMO) that were preemptively shot not only look slightly better but they also would have fit in with starting the RS storyline Fall 2021 and, if nothing would have been delayed, the end falling somewhere Summer 2022.

I think this is why he does such a shit job selling it. He struggles to sell intimacy anyway, but he’s not even giving it the ole college try bc he’s pissed off that it’s taken more time than he expected and dragging his feet. I mean…. All these rumors about the same chick for months HAS to have a negative impact on his harem, right?? 😂 Now she’s pissed that he’s dragging his feet – or maybe she wanted it to turn into more than what it is and he’s noped the fuck out – so she throws a hissy fit with the yoga cert mess, her mom’s pic, and her OF shower pictorial.  

It's possible had this not dragged along for this long, all the dirt that has surfaced RE: her and her sOuLMaTes being racist, antisemetic, fat phobic, basically all around horrendous ppl that has TANKED his image and lost him a good portion of his fandom would have maybe not surfaced. The mess would have been announced, been annoying, and been over before anyone cared enough to dig that much - or at least make that big of a deal about it, bc he would have been rid of her. I know that this dumpster fire mimics SS a lot but I think that Chris agreeing to a much shorter version in the beginning is why there are SO MANY pictures all at once. He probs didn't want to do this for the 2 years or whatever that SS committed to.

I think he has thrown his own tantrum of “I ain’t doin this shit anymore” and has left it to someone else to handle which is why he is AWOL from everywhere, including going out to dinner with his friend/castmates, and not doing his own SM anymore (I personally don’t think he’s posting anything at all right now himself). Seems he’s also made sure that he/his team control the mass narrative to the GP.

I think they’re riding this shit show out until the end, letting their teams do whatever they need to do. Even if she has the DESIRE to show up for anything like the Twitter reading (was she even invited? Was she wanted by her castmates/showrunners? Hollywood is show BUSINESS afterall so even if she wasn’t wanted she would be expected to show up to make good on production companies’ investments & save face?) the situations aren’t really going to be great for her. There would be – and SHOULD BE – backlash involving the discriminatory posts, which she obvs has no intentions of denouncing. IMO she should have done it anyway for her fans, but her not doing it goes a long way to prove her entitlement, lazy ass attitude, and ungratefulness. But from the looks of  those Star Power reports from IMDB that someone shared, it’s not her that’s hurting… it’s HIM. 🤡

He’s suffering greatly, which is also deserved, and he very likely knows it. It has taken a noticeable toll on his looks, his presence, his gait, and his energy. He looks like a shell of his former self bc he is. And he’s seemingly off licking his wounds until he can start his Chris Evans Redemption Tour.

I would like to put it out into the universe that my birthday is next month and it falls within their usual “drop” timeframe so it would be a fantastic birthday gift if March’s bomb was the BUA.

Daniel Jackson & Why Stargate SG-1 is the Best Show in the World

Here we go again. Listen, my obsession with this show knows no bounds and I’m going to simply have to take you through my thoughts on every character. 

Strap in. It gets long.

Daniel Jackson. Linguist and ancient aliens believer (Daniel. It really is your worst quality. Even worse that YOU WERE RIGHT HOLY MOLY) and he figured out how to dial the Stargate and get it to work. A character known for his intelligence and empathy, his moral compass and being petty as fuck. A man who pushes those around him to be better people, and to think outside of themselves. Also he has allergies which plays into a very cute intro to his character in the show where Jack literally tosses a tissue box into the Stargate to make contact with Jackson. Let’s get into it. 

We open season one with the SGC traveling back to Abydos where they left Daniel Jackson in the og movie after disaster struck (that disaster you may ask??? ….. I have no clue I haven’t watched it yet BUT I DIGRESS). There’s a problem. Aliens came through the Stargate and took one of their own. They need to talk to Daniel, to the Abydonians, and what follows is unfortunate. 

You see, they defeated Ra in the movie, a parasite pretending to be a god, and thought they were done with this villain. Unfortunately they’re facing a new one, same shit different name: Apophis - brother of Ra. And it turns out they aren’t finished with stealing and enslaving people. Now, the genre of villain they’re against is swift, cunning, technologically advanced, and ruthless. The Goa’uld. They attack Abydos and take a young boy named Skaara and Sha’re, Daniel’s wife, captive along with the SG team member. 

Ugh. Sha’re. Daniel is so sweet to her. They’re so clearly in love. Daniel Jackson has my favorite quality in a man which is that one of his primary personality traits is that he loves his wife. Ugh. It kills me that the Goa’uld took her away and he spends the next few years desperately tracking her down. The Goa’uld end up possessing both Sha’re and Skaara and it leads to Daniel Jackson rejoining the SGC and joining Jack O’Neill and Sam in SG-1. 

It’s important to note a few things about Daniel here that inform me about why he is the way that he is. He was orphaned as a child, he lost his wife whom he loved very much, and he is extremely empathetic. He basically imprints on every being he comes across that doesn’t have a family and that kills me. He’s desperate for connection and he tries to understand the motives and meaning behind everything. He cares about people. He cares about culture. He cares about respecting things you don’t understand. 

While we’re on the subject of imprinting, let's talk about Daniel and his friendships. We’ll start with Sam and Daniel. True science besties. I love every interaction between these two. It's like they found their platonic soulmate that they’ve spent their lives looking for. They info dump with each other, bask in each other’s intelligence and value it even when they have zero clue what the other is on about. Their friendship is pure and quick and beautiful and I can’t talk about Daniel without touching on how he quickly latches onto his friends and makes them important and how it makes his life fuller to have them. He does the same with Jack. They clearly care deeply for each other and Daniel finds a safe space in Jack. A space where he can push and be angry and ask questions and share how he feels and never receive rejection from Jack. Yes, they fight and argue and disagree but it is (typically) a safe disagreement where they’ll mend anything they hurt. Then there’s Teal’c. Teal’c, the man who is… kind of responsible for taking Sha’re from him. A man that Daniel wants to hate but can’t. Because Teal’c is a changed man. A man who had little choice. A man who Daniel has come to recognize as a friend and ally. This. This is big for Daniel. 

Imagine. Your wife is taken from you. The man responsible for choosing her to take is now saying he is going to help you defeat your enemies. He lives on earth with you. He is treated as an honorable man and warrior. He is part of your team. Your everyday life. And you forgive him. You forgive because it’s the right thing. You forgive because you know it’s not his fault. You forgive because your heart is big enough to do so. To not assign blame where it’s unfair. That is Daniel Jackson. That is who he is. And fuck do I admire this in him. If it were my partner taken, life stolen from them, parasites taken over their body and using them to harm people. If I had to look at the man who chose her every day I might not be so forgiving. I might not have it in me to see a difference. This quality is something I admire because it is something that would be excruciating for me. 

Speaking of excruciating things: watching Daniel’s face when someone he loves is in danger is like getting stabbed through the heart. One of the moments that sticks out in my mind is when Jack and Teal’c are trapped on a submarine that is being overrun by Replicators. Their only hope at not letting these bastards take over the earth is to blow it up, with both of them on it. Jack tells them to prepare to do it and Daniel is immediately against it. Jack takes his helmet off so he can hold the camera up so Daniel can see his face, can talk directly to him, and tells him to do it. When Daniel, in desperation, pushes again Jack reiterates that he does not want to die by the replicators. He doesn’t want his life to be over that way. Daniel has to let him and Teal’c go. Daniel eventually gives in but he refuses to look away while two of his friends die. (Spoiler alert is that they get saved at the last minute, thank fuck.) 

We watch this despair each and every time one of his loved ones is in danger. We watch his expression, his heartbreak, his feelings of powerlessness. He’s desperately done everything he can to keep them safe. Daniel is not a soldier. He is an academic. He doesn’t have the training that the rest of them do. He hasn’t been taught how to handle battlefields and death and loss like they have. Watching his friends get hurt or die is so devastating for him. They are his family. Losing them is like losing everything he has left, especially since losing Sha’re and leaving everyone on Abydos. His heart holds all of them so dear. 

We know he values his friendships, but what about the times he makes friends with beings from other planets? One of my favorite times is with an Unas who kidnaps him to sacrifice him. Now, Daniel spends a lot of time trying to communicate with this Unas. He shares food with him, talks, they play games. All while he’s being dragged through the wilderness to be slaughtered. He starts to understand the Unas, to learn that he has a connection with this one. Eventually this connection is what saves him in the end. Daniel even goes on a rescue mission to save this Unas when he gets captured in a later season. 

Then we have Reese. Oh, Reese. I liked her. She was an android responsible for creating the Replicators, a dangerous villain in later seasons of SG-1. Daniel spends time bonding with her, learning about her, and figuring out why she made the Replicators. She was lonely. She spent her life being told she was ‘made wrong’ and that she needed to be ‘fixed’. She was sad and emotionally uncontrolled. I’m about to be annoying about this but this is why Daniel bonds so well with her. She was lonely. She wanted friends. She wanted kinship. Daniel so desperately wants these things. He’s so lonely, has been since childhood. He sees himself in her. And when she dies he’s heartbroken. It’s the first time you hear him cuss at Jack, a line that will live in my head forever: You stupid son of a bitch. Now, Jack isn’t stupid. Daniel knows this. Daniel is angry. But Jack was just trying to protect him, doing the thing he does to show his love, and it was rejected. This moment stings. It stings because of the context. It stings because of when it happens. It stings because of what happens only a few episodes later. 

Daniel dies. Daniel dies because of his empathy and action. He dies protecting people. He dies. And it’s heartbreaking. Watching everyone say goodbye to him is one of the most tear-inducing moments so far. (I cried for… a long time.) Teal’c honors him in a way culturally significant to him with tears in his eyes. A man that is usually stoic and a strong silent type letting himself mourn a friend he’s grown to love. Sam cries and reminds him that she loves him and she wishes she could do more for him. He can’t even respond to her at that point but she sits with him and takes in what little time they have left. And Jack, well, he makes a joke. He tries to be serious about it but it’s too uncomfortably close to talking outright about his feelings so he makes some joke about how Daniel has been a pain in his ass for five years and despite all of that he has grown to admire the man that Daniel has become. It’s so painfully Jack O’Neill that it’s charming and gets Daniel to smile. (CAVEAT Daniel is not like… dead dead… I’ve been informed that he returns and my sadness over it is only temporary since the character will be back soon… and yet I still cried for over an hour over him.) 

The worst part is that there is a chance for him to be saved. But he stops them so he can ‘ascend’ and ‘do more’. And how does he stop them? Well, he talks to the one person he knows will respect his decision, the one person he knows will let him go, the one person he knows he can trust to have the responsibility to take care of it. Jack. He tells Jack to let him go, to make them stop, to let Daniel move on. And Jack, despondent and unhappy as he is to do it, does. It is horrible to watch. Daniel standing in front of Jack, crying, telling him he’ll miss everyone while Jack says ‘yeah. Me too.’ and lets Daniel go. Ugh. It kills me. He says at some point during the episode that his life is worth no more than anyone else’s. That he hasn’t done much. He’s not done enough to help. Oh boy. He’s so wrong. He’s so unbelievably wrong it hurts. He’s an idiot. Not enough? Daniel, sweetie, you’ve given your life to this. You’ve saved civilizations, saved earth, saved Skaara, what more do you need to know that you have done miraculous things? His low self esteem hurts me here. He doesn’t believe he’s done good, that he is good. How does a man who has given his life to this cause think so little of himself? Well, I think it stems back to his parents. 

Goodness. I believe his parents loved him more than the moon and all the stars. I believe they raised that boy with attention and affection and love and care and it is a damn shame that they died. It’s a damn shame they died at the same time. It’s bullshit that Daniel watched it. He watched both of his parents die when he was around 10-12 years old. He became an orphan in an instant. He went from two loving parents to the foster system in seconds. Now, he didn’t have to go to the system. He had a grandfather that could have adopted him but the man didn’t. He had a career more important than Daniel. I wouldn’t make the same choice if it were me. Hell, this little baby lost everything in a day and he needed someone. He needed love. He needed a home that was familiar. And instead of taking on the responsibility, instead of working through his anger and helping him cope you left him. My sympathies lie with Daniel here because I love him so deeply so I get angry when I think about little Daniel having a family member that could take him and instead being given up because of… what? A career? Some things are more important. (Sidenote that I am not condemning people for prioritizing themselves instead of having children… I am not ever going to have children and that is completely of my own free will and choice and wants and needs. What I am saying is that Daniel’s grandfather chose to leave him for the sake of himself and I think this rejection is where Daniel’s low self esteem comes from.)

His grandfather’s rejection is the start in a long line of rejections. Rejection from his peers, rejection from superiors, rejection from society. He finally finds somewhere he feels he belongs (Abydos) and that is gone too. In the blink of an eye. He thinks he isn’t good enough. And I think that blows. (Another side note that I think Daniel has at least ADHD if not also Autism and since I have both of those things I get really fiery about Daniel so… I’M BIASED OKAY.) He spends the rest of his life searching for connection, community, love. Hell, he even tries to infodump to Jack in episode one and faces yet another rejection of his skills and interests and I can’t help but feel like that hurts. Now, Jack does this song and dance often throughout the show with Daniel but it starts to feel more like they’re purposefully winding each other up and not like Jack is trying to hurt him. But… a different post for a different day. 

Now, I won’t lie. I am super drawn to characters like this. I had a huge crush on Milo from Atlantis as a kid and Daniel is very very close to that character in a lot of ways. The floppy hair, the glasses, the nerdiness, the excitable way he talks. So… I’m a little biased… but this character… this character rules. He’s sweet and kind and sometimes so petty it makes me laugh. He’s funny and charming and GOSH I JUST LOVE HIM OKAY. HE’S STUPID CUTE IT MAKES ME MAD. But. He has flaws. Flaws that make me like him even more but flaws nonetheless. He can be one track minded. He takes things into his own hands and puts himself in danger and puts his team in uncomfortable positions because of it. He lets his emotions get the better of him. He compartmentalizes by throwing his all into things like working and solving something. He’s a great man. But he’s confused and scared and has such low self-esteem it hurts. 

His flaws are on full display when he puts himself in immediate danger to stop Jack from destroying a ship that is about to wipe out a civilization that they helped get a new home for. Daniel has talked to this person, knows that he can prevent two civilizations from being destroyed, but Jack is focused on helping the one they’ve already connected with. Daniel disobeys Jack’s order. He puts himself in the path of an explosive in order to convince the other person to cease unintentionally destroying the planet in order to find another solution. While Daniel does succeed and it is the right thing he still puts Jack in a situation where he has to choose to sacrifice Daniel if he is to complete their mission and save a whole group of people. It isn’t fair. It hurts Jack, pisses him off, but Daniel isn’t putting that piece of it as his top priority. He’s putting saving two whole civilizations of history, art, and passion as his top priority. He doesn’t think past the consequences of what he’s doing. 

Another case like this is in season one, The Torment of Tantalus, where they find a device that contains information well beyond our wildest dreams. ‘Meaning of life stuff’ as he likes to say. He values this preservation of history and knowledge. Even more than his own life. His one track mindedness here almost gets him killed. Jack begs him to go, tries to force him, but Daniel refuses and again forces Jack to make the choice to leave him behind and get everyone else to safety. Now, Daniel does end up following and getting out of there but it does take him a little bit of time to come to the conclusion that he does have to leave. He can’t just give up his life to stay behind on a planet about to be destroyed by a storm. 

I want to touch on his pettiness for a moment because it is damn entertaining to watch him get… petulant for lack of a better word. I have never seen a man more willing to mouth off to high ranking government officials or question his bosses or down right taunt someone holding him captive. He will say some stupid joke in the driest tone I’ve ever heard and all I’m thinking is: yep this is the day he gets punched in the face. This is it. They’re going to do it. This man does not know when to shut up. My dear, sweet boy sometimes you have to SHUT UP!!! Self preservation, Daniel! Ever heard of it?!?! By far the best part of his pettiness is the looks him and Sam share when someone says something stupid. Some high ranking officer saying something stupid or derogatory? Sam and Daniel are sharing a ‘do you hear this guy?’ look. Someone being a bit too mouthy for their liking? They’re side-eyeing each other. They are true best friends. Having silent conversations with one another while everyone else in the room argues. I love their very first meeting. Sam geeking out over the dialing device while Daniel watches her like ‘who is this and why is she literally the most amazing person I’ve ever met’. Them interacting that whole first episode is just the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. They are best friends, your honor. I cherish them.

Daniel, above all, is the definition of what it means to have a found family. His was taken from him and he spends his life finding a family again. The great thing is that he does find it. He finds it and he holds on so tight. I’m still working through the seasons of Stargate but Daniel is an interesting and beautiful character. He’s traumatized and sad but he’s also wonderfully complex and still learning. 

If you haven’t watched Stargate consider this: the found family trope runs rampant here. There’s plenty of content to watch, plenty of relationships to explore, and plenty of things to be said about this show. Plus, you could write some damn good fic about it if you wanted to :)

First off i wanted to say i appreciate you always sharing your true opinion without muddying it up too much or trying to appease people. The honesty is very refreshing!

Okk anyway i keep seeing this take going around and wanted to know your thoughts on it (i have my own, but):

Leon in infinite darkness asks shen may out to dinner once and then later is looking forward to dinner with Claire. Do you see both of these incidents as platonic? The first one reads as flirting to me and the last one seems like an intentional ship tease from the writers (before uh, yknow, making the encounter end on a sour note... look, that one hug they share when leon saves her is ship tease 100% they know what theyre doing)

A lot of people seem to think he is just innocently wanting a meal and I kind of get that vibe with Claire I guess but... ... ... ANYWAY what are your thoughts. I think people are just simply afraid of whore leon

The way I look at it is that my goal first and foremost is to analyze the story text in a serious way -- and it's impossible to have a productive conversation about narrative, characterization, and use of literary tropes if I treat every single possible interpretation of the text as valid. There needs to be some uniformity to what I'm saying, or else there's no point in having the conversation.

That, and I also feel like there's no point in having this little community at all if we can't be honest with each other. Friendships aren't built on uwu. They're built on a sincere exchange of common interests and ideas.

So, I'm really grateful that we've all found each other. It's been so fucking awesome to meet so many people who are genuinely interested in a literary analysis of RE's story and want to brainstorm ideas and piece through things together as a team -- because this has never been my experience in RE fandom before, over the full 25 years that I've been here.

Ok, so as for your actual question --

I pretty much agree with your interpretation of what's going on there.

People really need to get the fuck over this weird, puritanical pearl-clutching they're doing and being scandalized by OG Leon being a slut canonically. OG Leon tries to fuck Hunnigan at one point, for god's sake.

Because, like. If you try to handwave away or whitewash the way that Leon is pure testosterone; he's a walking hard-on looking for a hole throws himself at people, you're erasing and overlooking a really big part of his character.

Leon is lonely and he fucking hates himself.

The way that this manifests/the way that he expresses this is different between Remake and OG, but that fact about him never goes away. Remake Leon puts up walls and self-isolates as though he's trying to protect everyone around him from the misfortune of having to know him, but OG Leon does the opposite. OG Leon is constantly giving more and more of himself away in the hopes that, eventually, there'll be nothing left.

So, there's a few different things going on there when he asks out Shen May and then Claire in ID.

With Shen May -- yes, he is actually asking her out. That is a legitimate offer for a date that he will go into with the intention of putting the moves on her and having it end in sex.

He does this not just because she's a hot girl -- though, of course he does think she's a hot girl -- he does it because he feels enough of a connection to her that, if she were to go out with him once, he could use that as a way to trick himself into thinking he's still worth other people's time -- even if for just a few hours. Again: he's really fucking lonely. No one person ever stays in his life long enough to form a meaningful relationship with him (platonic or otherwise), but if he can take a girl out to dinner -- hey, that's something, right?

And if he were to actually fuck her, he'd be able to lose himself in her wants and desires for long enough that he can forget how much he fucking hates himself. If he were to feel her hands on his body, he would actually feel wanted for a change. And if he were to make her come, he would feel needed -- and, if he were to make her come more than once, that would be even better. (Remember: Leon is "The Protector." He needs to be needed. He's probably the master of foreplay and will tease and touch and put his mouth on a partner for well over an hour before he actually fucks them.)

And, ever since being kidnapped by the CIA, the only way that Leon has ever been needed or wanted or useful in any way has been through physical means and the use of his body. That's why he defaults to sex as a coping mechanism before he gives up and just starts drinking. He might not have any value as a person, but as a physical body and an object -- well, that's a different story.

Leon objectifies himself, is what I'm saying.

With Claire, though, it's a little bit different.

Yes, it's ship bait -- but it's very mild ship bait, because the context for this one is way different.

Leon isn't being sincere with Claire when he says what he says. He knows that Claire didn't call him or meet up with him because she wants to go out with him or is looking for a booty call. He's not stupid (mostly).

Leon is being sarcastic and self-deprecating when he tells Claire that he was hoping she was going to want to get dinner with him. It's a sad joke to him, because, in his mind, the thought that Claire would be interested in him at all is actually ridiculous.

Because Claire knows him in ways that Shen May didn't. He can't charm his way into Claire's panties by pretending that he's something more than -- or that he's someone -- that he's not.

Claire doesn't need him -- Claire has never needed him, and Leon has absolutely no reason to believe she wants him, either.

What good is he to her, really, when she already knows the truth? She knows that Leon's only real use is as a weapon -- that he's not good for literally anything outside of an active bioterrorism situation. She knows that he fucks up everything he ever tries to do in his personal life. So, why would she want him? Why would she ever want him?

She doesn't. That's why she's about to disappear from his life again for maybe another six years. Maybe more. Because he's not worth being around.

At least, that's what his brain tells him.

It's a really self-defeating mindset that turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Him talking about getting dinner with Claire is a joke, and the punchline is his own opinion of himself.

Everything I enjoyed about Ted Lasso 3x10

It was so exciting to watch them announce the players that got into their national teams

Laughed at Ted not knowing Bumbercatch is swiss

Appreciated the whole team being there for Sam when he was snubbed

When it cut from the title sequence to ted sitting down with rebecca for biscuits with the boss i really thought it was for real gonna be an OG one but then they panned to trent and i was disappointed but i couldnt even be mad because it was so funny

Trent loving getting a good grade in girl talk was so funny and cute!

"So chaps, what do we think?" was such a fun line to me for some reason

All 3 of them going "Nah" and making the same face, so fun!

Ted was saying such nonsense for the rest of that scene and they made sure to show us Rebcca's reactions to every single one and she looked so fond every single time

That whole scene was an absolute delight, filled my heart with joy, the England kit! the E for U swap! the tie dye shirt with Roy colors! One thing I can say about this season is that things do tend to go great when Jamie is involved

I love that Higgins knows Keeley, Ted and Sassy are Rebecca's top options in that order and that this is unquestionable

Higgins' comparing Akufu to the Chocolate Factory kids was both very accurate and very funny 😆 "I hate to break it to you Rebecca, but those children are dead."

I really liked Rebecca being insecure about the meeting because she knows she's only been invited as a token. It felt true to life and also reminded me of a favorite moment from a beloved show of my past, The Good Wife, where a character expresses a similar concern and gets much the same advice as Higgins gave

I really thought Rebecca was taller than Higgins' office door and was momentarily scared she was going to bump her head on the way out 😆

I liked Keeley and Mae's conversation, though I, much like Keeley, did not understand the lightning saying 😅 did appreciated the little "Maybe" joke though, it felt like something Ted would do and I always love to perceive them mirroring each other

Everyone noticing Roy's cheerful t-shirt was very funny

I loved that we saw Rebecca studying for the meeting

THE!! TOY!!! SOLDIER!!!!!! She's been carrying it around!!! She is fond of it!!!!! She treats it with such care, and it still brings her strength, gosh!! To think of the moment she picked it up off the ground and stored it away, of whenever it was she decided to keep it with her as an amulet!!! I'm breathless!!!!!!!

The fact that Rebecca has panic attacks is something that can be SO PERSONAL that meant so so SO much to me, I could cry just thinking about it, I've always been sure she did and to have it confirmed was a thrill, and so emotional and satisfying to me to see her self soothe and how it paralleled Ted, truly beautiful gorgeous amazing

Ms Bowen is blonde now! Idk why but that was exciting, I like her! I think Roy should introduce her to Beard, I feel like she could beat up Jane. It was also hilarious to me that they named her Leann for real 🤣 they have no shame!

Barbara's Juicy couture tracksuit and "I like clothes that tell the truth" LMAOOO COMEDY GOLD

Barbara and Keeley's snow globe exchange was delightful. Barbara slowly grew on me throughout the season and was a true highlight in this particular episode, I was very glad that she chose Keeley.

I love that Rebecca went to that meeting in a bbp top and one of her less murderous earrings

I appreciated seeing Rebecca in a professional setting, taking a stand, and going to bat for the club and for football in general, it's something I have always longed to see from her and I'm glad I got it even if it was late in the game

Really liked that Nate plays the violin

I liked the window into Rupert and Rebecca's past and the glimpse into why they were in love once

I liked the contents of Roy's letter to Keeley and thought it was funny that she couldn’t read his handwriting

It was exciting to see Rebecca at Keeley's house! She demanded a hug! She's going to fund Keeley's firm! Their friendship has stayed beautifully consistent throughout the season and I appreciate that.

Keeley writing down the number and saying "This is how they do it in the movies" was another Ted-like moment (down to Rebecca being endeared by it!)

I enjoyed the joke of Roy walking in when he did and I loved loved loved that he and Rebecca saluted each other again! I'd been waiting for that!!

I think Nate's apology to Will - how he did it, the score, the note with the sprig of lavender, how it was filmed - felt like such a season 1 moment that it filled me up with this sense of right-ness and I truly appreciated it. Possibly one of the best moments of the season 🥹

Rebecca looked so at peace hanging that painting and also SO beautiful in that dress

Ted sat down without being invited, and Rebecca scooched a little closer once he did 🥹🥹

She specifically wanted to tell him about this big emotional milestone and Ted looked? I have no idea how to describe it, but it was new, it was a face he's never made before, and it was so?? I don't even know, I don't know what to do with it, or with "I wanna win for us too."

JON: "I liked Helen." HELEN: "I am Helen." JON: "The real one." It is consistent for his character, but I find it funny that Jon seems to bond with people rather quickly. He knew Helen for 20 minutes. He knew Jordan for 20 minutes.

Helen threatened him in MAG 157, so not very nice. But very typical for that personality again. Stating untrue things in a beneficial and factual way, suggesting you should believe it.)

I have asked myself this question so many times. And I've come to the same conclusion. There is no grand motive behind that. Just doing it over and over again, torturing others, they like that. The feeling of being able to make a person so submissive, so obedient that they will do everything to stay your friend. It makes me sick... I have once asked one of my “Helens” if she knows that those things she did are horrible. She got all smug and said yes and that she likes it and is proud of it. Fucking hell..

Th-th-there was the hotel and then…" Hmmm, I like the headcanon that Martin saw (and heard) something in the sky shifting and and suddenly, like "the sky ate him" but in reverse, it spits out Jon and Martin catches him^^ The soundscaping suggests otherwise though. After "Christ Jon" and during "Oh, Martin! Good." there's rubble to be heard, like climbing over debris. And only after "What happened?" we hear fabric rustling. So sounds to me like Jon fell out of the sky in front of Martin, then gets up and they hug.

JON: "Do you? Want to mourn?" MARTIN: "… A bit, I guess. I-I mean, she was our friend. Sort of. A bit." It's okay to be upset losing a "friend" like this. After all, there most definitely were fun times too, if it was just awful, you probably wouldn't have become their friend, after all.

i'm veeeery fond of their og naruto dynamic, i think it often goes misunderstood/understated but to me it's one of the highlights to the original series! from stuff like kakashi shielding him from orochimaru and sealing his curse mark (which. btw. crazy. LOVE that scene) to the ENTIRE deal with chidori and the pride kakashi felt watching sasuke fight gaara with it... i think it's SURPRISINGLY well done! while i due to personal preference like to read it as specifically familial, i think you can read it anyway you want (not all mentor-type dynamics need to be familial in nature and not being so won't make it any less meaningful)

i don't think kakashi was a particularly great teacher (in fact i think tenzo is shown to be a MUCH better captain/mentor the moment he's introduced to team 7 lol) but you can certainly tell that he cares about all of the kids and wants to do right by them, it's just that with sasuke specifically to me it feels like it's of highly personal significance to him?

and it's not hard to see why, obviously kakashi and sasuke do not have the same trauma but i find it reductive to say that it means kakashi can't see himself in him at all, or that he can't be of any use to sasuke? one of my favorite scenes is the (... i think mildly controversial, from what i've seen?) one where he talks to sasuke on that tree and tells him to drop his revenge quest, because while yeah it was not a perfect effort, to me it's clear that 1. kakashi was being very genuine in his words and 2. that it like... almost worked? sasuke was very sincerely pondering his words before the sound 4 came along.

btw so funny that both kakashi and obito tie him up when talking to him. anyway

so you add that with the weird relationship kakashi has with the entire uchiha clan, starting with obito (the very reason kakashi is able to teach sasuke in any meaningful way at all), going through itachi if you treat team ro as canon WHICH I DO, I LOVE TEAM RO, and ending with sasuke, who is someone kakashi can still try to give a normal life to? yeah i can see why he might feel personally responsible for him!

sasuke's side is less in your face but like... sasuke sought kakashi out to help train him and very much echoes kakashi's words about not abandoning your comrades. he is also often the first one to understand where kakashi is going with something, him and kakashi have similar ways of going through life even if kakashi has majorly mellowed out with age.

there's also little things like how sasuke just had no qualms about walking into kakashi's house unannounced (after itachi beat his ass ty itachi looove u itachi), even before that, how when kakashi calls sasuke over while itachi+kisame are having tea, sasuke just kind of announces that he HATES sweets (so cute), as if he made the assumption kakashi either bought it for him or was thinking about it? like.

despite whatever route it ended up taking To Me it's very clear that they did have a special bond and that it was a VERY important part of sasuke's everything pre-shippuden, he was clearly comfortable around kakashi despite his standoffish attitude. it was not perfect and kakashi does hold blame for a lot of things (in general he has a very hands-off teaching style that doesn't work great with these kids), but that's like. part of why i like it you know! it's a little complicated but not through any ill will. it's just that they are both full of Issues lmao

it makes me ssoooooo saaaaad that they BARELY speak to each other at all in shippuden because like. that was one of THE dynamics in the original team 7 you know? and idk if it comes as a surprise but i'm not even OPPOSED to sasuke wanting to kill kakashi by the time they meet again? in fact i think it could be kind of awesome. because like he could have a lot of reasons to be angry with him, up to and including the mere fact that kakashi took SO LONG to even meet him again?

(remember when team 7 finally meets sasuke again w/ tenzo and sai, and he himself mentions kakashi? it's one of those things you can choose to dismiss as meaningless dialogue but i often do think about it lol)

but instead we have sasuke in the peak of his borderline-demonization by the writing, which just leads to there not being much of an interesting dialogue at all. i'm not opposed to kakashi's sharingan being something that sasuke comes to resent either — it could be very fun character writing as that is the very thing that encouraged them to bond in the first place —, but i don't like the way it was done and i ESPECIALLY hate how it was immediately dropped like BROTHER MY PLOT THREADS... THEY'RE FALLING APART...

i could go on about a thousand different other things, such as.

sorry to mention jiraiya but. the rasengan vs chidori thing is VERY telling; jiraiya is naruto's mentor, and kakashi is sasuke's, this is reflected best when the kids each use their respective Overkill Jutsu at each other and the adults each take responsibility for their own kid

again, i'm unsure if it's fully intentional but there is this opposition of orochimaru vs kakashi other than the obvious confrontational scene they have. the very fact that kakashi is the one to put a limit to orochimaru's literal influence on sasuke through the curse mark is a very interesting narrative choice! kakashi is also extremely afraid of orochimaru and highly protective of sasuke; again it reads as a Personal fear/protectiveness rather than purely Professional to me. it builds this idea of kakashi being one of sasuke's choices, and orochimaru being the other (and we know which one he chooses unfortunately lol)

chidori in general is like. crazy btw. it becomes sasuke's signature move. and it's kakashi's creation. hi

this is also something that was dropped but there was also the occasional pointing out of similarities between, fucking, lee and gai of all people vs kakashi and sasuke? and like i don't need to explain this one that much right. gai is lee's dad in like everything but name LOL (and much like kakashi he also has questionable habits when it comes to how he teaches his kid)

their dynamic concretely to me is about caring very much about someone who shares a lot of pain with you, but being a little intimidated by that shared aspect. nothing hurts more than failing / being failed By someone who you know DOES understand you, in the end!

it's all my personal preference of course there's no right or wrong way to read naruto (well the wrong way is thinking it's good.) What the fuck do I even say? They made the perfect ending. They pulled out all the stops, the callbacks, the character development, trocadero went harder than they ever had before, they wrapped up all the remaining loose ends of project freelancer… it was thematic and beautiful, it fit the themes of the show, it was tragic, it ended the only way RvB can… with Church dying for good. There’s no version of this story where he lives…. Where they’re not doomed

And thus concludes my 20th rewatch of RvB 1-13… truly the show ever. of all time. It manages to be just as powerful now, 8 years and 20 rewatches later, as it was the very first time I watched it as a little 15 year old girl who decided to watch that silly halo show my brothers were always quoting because I was bored one day.

Anyway sure glad that’s where the show ended and it definitely didn’t get dragged on for way too long with mediocre seasons and an unsatisfactory ending or anything like that… wouldn’t that be crazy

Would you say that the LMK writers don't understand Wukong as a character? Of course, there are different interpretations and adaptations of not only this character but many other beloved characters from different stories.

But I think if 10 different writers create a story about, say, Spider-Man. Even if they all do something different with the character, Spider-Man should still be recognizable as Spider-Man. Like there are inherent traits that simply make the character who they are.

Do you think LMK Wukong is missing those inherent traits, or I guess completely misses the point on who SWK is a character?

Monkie Kid spoilers below:

I guess I'd have to start off by saying that I'm very hesitant, especially as someone who is neither Chinese or of Chinese descent, to say whether there's a truly "wrong" way to understand or write the Monkey King. Hell I've often poked fun at the way Sun Wukong has frequently been written in Chinese retellings of Journey to the West, and it must be acknowledged that there is a MASSIVE numbers of very different ways that Sun Wukong has been depicted in Xiyouji retellings, from a silly little guy to a hardened war criminal. For example, here's a Sun Wukong who's definitely an evil little bloodthirsty scamp as presented by Stephen Chow in Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013):

And here's a panel of the Monkey King "Aku" from Marjorie Liu's (who's of Taiwanese descent) Monstress. Here he's feasting on fruit while watching the souls of a bunch of kids that he had slaughtered be tortured for information:

So yes, there's a pretty big difference between these version of the Monkey King and many others, including his multifaceted presentation in the og classic and the laid-back goof that Monkie Kid seems to be aiming for! THAT SAID, and even while acknowledging that the Monkey King as a character has gone through innumerable transformations (lol), I can't help but feel like the writers for Monkie Kid might be letting their Sun Wukong fall prey to the all-too-common push for "more epic!," "The antagonists were right all along," "Pile on the angst!" and the kind of standard taking out the "intelligent" in "intelligent stone monkey" that you see in other western versions of the Monkey King. For example, Netflix's The New Legend of Monkey stars a muscleheaded and illiterate Monkey King, and while it was more of a one-off jest that was quickly disproved in Monkie Kid it is a bit well bothersome how to this day you'll find "lol Sun Wukong can't read!" jokes being bandied about.

I also don't think that anyone can deny that lego show Sun Wukong has been presented as less and less of a competent or even heroic individual as the story's gone on, and personally I'm starting to suspect that this is partially because the writers A) didn't know how to make Qi Xiaotian shine as a hero otherwise and B) to make the Six-Eared Macaque change from obvious antagonist to a true member of team good guy. It's undeniable that Macaque is the firm fandom meow-meow and has been for awhile, and if memory serves correctly the "Sun Wukong sucks" rhetoric started to really take off after Macaque presented his shadow play back in season 2 in which the Monkey King is ultimately framed as nothing but a selfish jerk who betrays his friends on a whim. And while there's basically 0 reference in either recent canon or fanon to the stuff the shadow simian put Qi Xiaotian and his loved ones through up until the end of season 3, it's hammered in time after time after time again just how completely Sun Wukong hurt and still hurts everyone around him because of what he did or what he failed to do. As it is, now we've seen Zhu Dachu yell at SWK for failing to protect Qi Xiaotian, an entire play that framed him as a terrible person and Macaque flat-out saying he's a terrible teacher (and then the plot going out of its way to somewhat confirm this), many people yelling at SWK for his plan to use the Samadhi Fire being stupid and poorly thought out, Long Xiaojio screaming at him for failing everyone especially the people who care about him while she's on fire and in pain, the Azure Lion referring to SWK as someone who's corrupted Qi Xiaotian with his blindness, and the ink clone of Qi Xiaotian--you known, the manifestation of his scariest but truest fears--referring to SWK as a fraud and a force of destruction. So now SWK and the lego show story have been left is this weird place where it seems that in large part the "SWK completely sucks and hurts everyone" truthers were right--and you see this sentiment reflected CONSTANTLY in canon and in fanon--and yet when people just say that explicitly there's a certain amount of scrambling to argue otherwise. I know it's been discussed before, but I think it bears repeating that not that long ago the hatred being leveled at SWK for supposedly being Qi Xiaotian's deadbeat dad on top of everything else he ruined forever got to the point where a writer felt compelled to go on twitter to confirm that SWK is not the father. I think it was the same writer who said that SWK is trying his best, but as others have noted if THIS is his best (world seems like it's in danger of being destroyed every other week) well lol and also lmao. Idk, personally I think if they noted there were THAT many people ready to condemn SWK for something that wasn't even proven one way or another they should step back and think about why that is. And it definitely doesn't help that they keep saying that there's more to this story from SWK's perspective and/or what actually happened, but then they won't actually show it.

So in the end, I'm not sure if in Monkie Kid's case it's so much a instance of not understanding the Monkey King as much as it is about not wanting to stick with what makes the Monkey King so beloved in the first place, the writers themselves not having a firm idea about where they ultimately want his story to go, but also even if unconsciously using him as a punching bag/sacrificial lamb to further the stories/likeability of other characters. And who knows, maybe later episodes will give SWK a backstory that is so tragic and well written and that explains his failures in the present so well that I'll feel stupid for saying all of this. Honestly I would love it if that was the case. Because Monkie Kid seem to have become one of the main ways that a lot of people in the west are learning about the Monkey King and Journey to the West in the first place, and it would kind of suck if the main impression that they ended with was with SWK as nothing but an constant failure that basically everyone who's ever loved him or even spent time with him comes to distrust, resent, and flat-out hate for very legitimate reasons.

Same team for both main match and rematch. Poor Potato is really just there as a team placeholder despite being my MVP against Drayton. He's just taking it easy.

Main Match:

He kicked my butt the first time

I start with Gwen and Art, a strategy hatched because Drayton kept bullying me. The plan was to have Art use Lava Plume for some spread damage, allowing Gwen to set up a Bulk Up while also getting a fire move boost.

Naturally, Kieran sets up some rain.

It is time for Nugget and Avocado to take the stage.

Kieran's Dragonite throws down a Thunder. Nugget, my pride and joy, eats it happily thanks to Lightning Rod. Then he launches a Zing Zap at Politoad, whereupon he is deeply disappointed that a) Politoad ate the Wacan Berry, and b) that he missed the throat and instead just landed in the frog's stomach.

Nugget used to know Throat Chop and he still thinks fondly of those times he used to go straight for the jugular.

Avocado, my best dopey boi, proceeds to yawn cutely and start setting the Ultimate Avocado Plan in motion: naps for everyone.

Avocado's strategy is Yawn/Slack Off support which is shockingly effective. Nugget, meanwhile, is here to threaten everyone with a good time whenever he gets to Recover first.

Gwen and Art make a reappearance. They do get to set up as planned but eventually go down.

Potato had a miserable time on court.

Kieran is DEEPLY UPSET with us when Pon enters the fray.

Teaching Pon Knock Off is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Pon-chan our beloved tanked an all-out Fickle Beam so we wouldn't be sad! She then tanked the next attack as well because she is a true friend.

Eventually she goes down and Nugget and Avocado are back on the scene together. The OGs of our team.

Nugget hangs on with 1 HP because he also loves us immensely (and he is fueled with spite against Kieran for being snubbed in the cafeteria before). Hydrapple eventually removes him from the field with an Earth Power (on a critical hit too! How rude!)

Avocado puts on a beautiful sparkly hat and then Zen Headbutts us into victory. He is the true backbone of this team.

Rematch:

I make the same mistake as last time and send poor Gwen and Art into the rain (again).

The knightly duo are swapped out for Nugget and Avocado where they immediately take a Breaking Swipe. It is deeply upsetting to Nugget, who loves being a high physical attacker.

Not that it stops him from Zing Zapping into the frog again.

Avocado is back on the Ultimate Avocado Plan and we love him for it.

Nugget's Quick Claw is in top condition today! Nugget himself is in top condition today! He is super responsive to our shouts and speedy to boot! He is truly in his element

(Avocado Slacks Off in the background so that he can continue to tank moves while Yawning. Kieran's Dragonite is taking a nap)

Since the star of Kieran's battle this time around is Breaking Swipe, Nugget opts for Poison Jab. This little shit is on a mission to poison everyone, and he is very successful.

Porygon-Z misses his first Hyper Beam (Nugget scoots a little to the left thanks to our shout), and then gets upset enough about getting Yawned at by Avocado that it hits the second. Poor Avocado gets knocked out so he can take a proper rest.

Enter Pon! Who no longer gets shouted at angrily by Kieran.

Her plan was to do a gentle tap to knock off that pesky Life Orb but instead she hits a home run and knocks Porygon-Z all the way out. We'll take it.

In comes Incineroar. Paired with Breaking Swipe, we have now taken substantial and annoying attack debuffs. Nugget is particularly upset about this.

He is so upset, in fact, that he scoots a little to the right thanks to our shout and avoids Incineroar's Fake Out. Screw you.

Pon puts that beautiful shiny mask to good use. She hits multiple critical hits because she wants to be praised! And she is, because she deserves it.

Kieran's Hydrapple knocks her out with a super effective Tera Blast (ouch, Kieran hasn't been slacking off while he was away from school), but not before Pon knocks off that annoying assault vest.

Nugget retaliates immediately to this slight by poisoning first Grimmsnarl, then Hydrapple.

Hydrapple, in turn, attempts to recreate last match and kick Nugget out with an Earth Power. Nugget hangs on with 6 HP purely out of spite. Screw you x2.

Things could get ugly so we return the steaming sea urchin. It's time for Gwen and Art to take the stage with the tried and true Lava Plume + Bulk Up + Flash Fire.

Poor poisoned Grimsnarl keeps trying to sucker punch the wrong pokemon. This suits Gwen perfectly, who proceeds to clean up the field while Art offers her moral support.

Poor Potato never showed up at all.

I love how unlike in the original game, Leon is actually angry at Ada. In the original not only does he seem unaffected by the fact that she's still alive, he doesn't even care that she used and betrayed him. I like how Leon now acts indifferent and distrustful of her, and now Ada is the one trying to get his attention.

Another thing that stood out to me was that Ada tried to convince Leon to let Ashley die twice, and I love her disappointed expression when Leon ignored her both times lol.

I'm happy that Capcom is rewriting their canon, and I really hope they scrap Aeon if they plan on remaking RE 6. Ada is still basically treating Leon like a dog and that's disgusting and I don't understand how some people think the Aeon is a "beautiful, romantic relationship".

Their meeting in OG is so weird because it almost feels like that's not actually the first time that they've seen each other between RE2 and RE4. I don't think that that's actually the case -- but, at the very least, Leon seems to have gotten confirmation a long time ago that Ada was actually still alive. ("So it is true. You, working with Wesker.") So, it does make sense that he's not super shocked or otherwise emotionally affected to see her.

I don't think that it's fair to say that he doesn't care that she betrayed him, though. He's definitely wary of her throughout the game ("Why are you here? Why'd you show up like this?" / "Maybe it's about time you told me the reason why you're here."), and he's right to be because -- duh, Wesker.

But, he's not overly worried about it because Ada also gave him a declaration of love and a genuine, dying kiss in OG RE2, so OG Leon has no reason to believe that Ada's going to do anything to actively hurt him or fuck him over, even if she is working with Wesker.

Remake canon is a whole different beast.

Ada never professed feelings in RE2make, and the kiss she gave him in that version of the story was disingenuous and outwardly manipulative. He might not have realized it at the time, but I'm sure he definitely saw it in hindsight. And Leon doesn't have the intel about Wesker going into RE4make, either, so he has absolutely no idea what she's been up to in the last six years. He has every reason to be way more suspicious and uncertain of her motives than he was in OG.

For all intents and purposes, I would argue that Remake canon killed Aeon in RE2make, when Leon points a gun at her and tells her that he never trusted her. OG Leon would have never, because, arguably, OG Ada never deserved it.

Like, I really don't think it's fair to say that OG Ada treated OG Leon like a dog. OG Ada was honest with Leon in ways that Remake Ada never, ever was. OG Ada was also kinder and softer in a lot of different ways that Remake Ada isn't -- and, OG Ada has only ever been on Leon's side. No matter which way the tides turned, Ada always kept her lot thrown in with Leon and never went back on it.

Remake Ada does not do that -- at least, not in a way that he can see. Remake Ada actually does manipulate Remake Leon in the way that people perceive her as always having done in OG (but she actually didn't).

Like, is Aeon stupid and poorly written and badly executed in OG? Oh, absolutely. That's why we're having this conversation to begin with. It's so poorly executed that people can't even agree on what the fuck actually happened between them. But... it is internally consistent, if you pull back and look at it as a complete picture.

This might be a weird pedantic, overly nuanced thing I'm about to say but, like.

I feel like Ada's use of Leon in OG was done from a place of respect, if that makes sense? She knew how smart and capable he was, and she respected that about him, so she looked at him from the perspective of "we'll work together on shit as a team, but I just can't/won't tell him the full extent of what I'm actually doing." And Leon kind of understood that and was grateful for her help, because she continuously gave him reasons to trust her. So, his response was, "We'll work together on shit as a team, and if I don't ask her what she's doing, we can stay a team."

Remake Ada's use of Leon is a lot more malicious. She doesn't respect him; she wants something from him. Remake Ada's use/manipulation of Leon feels more like her looking at him and going "You know, I could probably get something out of him if I play my cards right." It's like that old Chris Rock bit where he talks about how girls don't fuck him just because they want to fuck him; they look at him and go "You know, if I fuck Chris Rock, I bet I could get him to pay my Visa bill."

I feel like that has the opportunity to change, though? Because it does seem like Ada has a genuine change of heart in the post-credits scene of RE4make. The question now is if Remake Leon would actually accept that change of heart or not.

Personally, I don't think that he will -- I think he wants to, just like he wanted to trust her in RE2make. But, ultimately, he didn't trust her. And I think he won't accept her change of heart, either, simply because she's given him absolutely no reason to.

And I think Remake canon could be setting up to turn Ada into a far more tragic character. Without Leon's support and without a plan already set in place when she betrays Wesker, I don't think that this is going to end well for her. She might become the type of character who learned the lesson too late and now can't be saved.

Which... like... sucks. But at the same time is really fucking awesome, because literally no one in the RE universe ever faces real, actual, tangible consequences for their actions. Most of that fucking cast should be dead or turned or both by now. And while it sucks that Ada might end up the sacrificial lamb for this, she's also the best candidate for being the first one to go through it -- because, if Capcom can pull it off with Ada, they're coming for Chris next. Because no one needs to face consequences more than that motherfucker.

And that's gonna be a whole fuckin thing, man.
