I wonder if the cynical real-life origin of the constantly helmeted Rinzler was that creating and animating the young version of Kevin Flynn, and Clu, cost so much money that they didn't have the budget to do the same with Boxleitner. So we get the bare minimum of a few blurry shots of the unhelmeted Tron in Flynn's flashback to establish his existence, and then have all the other cool Tron action in the film performed by a character whose face we never see.
Tumblr media
Don't get me wrong, it made for a good angst-filled plot point. But couldn't we at least have seen the helmet disappearing when Rinzler falls in the water at the end?

Amanda Hearst, wife of TRON Ares director Joachim Rønning, may have shared the first glimpse of a set on Instagram.
Thought it might be exclusively using ILM's StageCraft virtual sets for grid scenes, but apparently not!
Big thanks to Employee___427 on Twitter (yes, I'm still calling it Twitter!) for alerting me to this!

I'm convinced that the glossy minimalist aesthetic of Legacy 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 have worked if there was more narrative context to it. Like, if the Grid started off with the familiar moebius inspired imagery, but was gradually warped into the Legacy style as CLU began remaking the system to fall in line with his vision of perfection. IDK. Just my opinion.
oh you're absolutely right, one of my main nitpicks are how due to "reboot-itis" for a film made in an older/different time, tron legacy kind of makes up its own story and aesthetics without properly building off of what 1982 established (basically like. slapping in 1982 names for a new sci-fi isekai story to call itself a tron sequel), which is a shame! tron 2.0, tron uprising, and kingdom hearts better respect the first film and make efforts in calling back to 1982, continuing its aesthetics/writing and expanding upon it with the "current story" at hand.
tron 2.0 expands upon the idea of user/program relations and how user corruption can harm programs and vise versa (on top of compelling and horrifying ideas with the digitizing laser), and in kingdom hearts for the legacy world, unlike the movie, the whole story revolves around sora continuously recalling his previous friendship experiences with tron and that being his motivation to help! legacy kind of,, just has things,, happen? i can elaborate but this post is getting long as is, and probably better written in the video essay drafts i have :')
but yeah, there's a lot of potential that isn't utilized! things like maybe acknowledging clu 1 (the program we first meet in 1982 no less) in legacy to contribute to clu 2's feelings on perfectionism + flynn being an imperfect being despite being a user, that sort of stuff, aren't handled well; i'm more than happy to talk about it, but who knows LMAO

Get ready to re-enter the Grid! Jeff Bridges confirmed on Facebook – he’s officially back for Tron: Ares. You know, the guy who made Kevin Flynn so unforgettable in the original 1982 movie and its sequel, Tron: Legacy?
Remember when Tron first hit theaters? It was like nothing anyone had seen before. No widespread internet, video games were still finding their footing…and this movie drops with crazy visuals and a mind-bending story about a world inside computers. It didn’t rake in cash right away, but over time? Tron became a total legend, paving the way for a whole new wave of filmmaking.
We’ve been lucky enough to chat with Jeff Bridges over the years, and naturally, we had to ask: what’s the secret behind Tron’s lasting appeal?

You know something that really bugs me? The fact that Flynn was able to save Yori from dying with his "user powers" or whatever, but not Ram--- what the heck Flynn, you've been on this journey with Ram for longer, why not save him??
Oh, but I'm just bitter because I liked Ram a lot.
I really like how the colors turned out on this! I didn't draw the helmets because helmets are my nemesis and also because, if you've seen the behind-the-scenes photos from this movie, we were robbed, all the leads have gorgeous hair!
So I drew them with hair. Sue me.
I also improvised the circuitry lines a bit because they had WAY more lines in this movie than the suits did in Legacy and I'm not dedicated enough to memorize their placement, haha
Tron Lives! (If only Ram did too! :...) )
Drawn using Procreate.

Part 1, Part 2
You know that part in legacy when quorra is hurt and Sam speaks up but Flynn shouts that “you’ve done enough!”? And then he quickly walks that back with a joke? Anyway I thought of a time he may have shouted those same words at CLU.
I’ve been rereading the Betrayal comic a lot recently cause it’s so good and thought of this beat. Multiple times Flynn arrives in the Betrayal comic he is saved by Tron from collapsing debris (and his own stunts lol). I imagine this takes place after Jordan’s passing given his more haggard look.
Flynn was shoved out of the way by Tron when debris from a collapsing sector comes crumbling down. When the dust settles Flynn finds tron and is absolutely shaken. Tron’s been injured before but he’s always maintained consciousness, this time he’s stuck in the lifeless mode Quorra fell into when she lost the arm. Flynn’s panicking because he’s been able to decipher Alan’s code for the superficial injuries but to this degree? Given Flynn’s loss in the user world he can’t control his outburst to CLU who arrives on the scene.
CLU is trying to twist this to be the fault of the ISOs which is a thing he constantly does in the betrayal comic but Flynn is not in the mood.
There was gonna be another panel of CLU being taken aback for a moment at the sight (like in Betrayal he is behind the attacks but seeing Tron hurt he’s probably like “oh..yikes okay hm.” I just think these three have a fascinating dynamic.)
Tronnie will get fixed and Flynn will have a sit down about self preservation which will not last long cause “fight for the users” is so engrained lol but oh well. Flynn will later try and apologize to CLU and he’ll just reiterate the iso situation but quietly relieved Tron is fixed.
And nothing bad ever happened on the grid again lol

I'm working on a Rinzler piece right now for my post-Tron: Legacy Rinzler-centric fic, Salvage What You Can (Which I need to update, but unfortunately art inspiration and writing inspiration don't cross over). Totally had no understanding of how much fucking black there would be, basically black, orange, and blue are going to be the only colors, so that's fun and not at all challenging. In other news finding refs of the detail on Rinzler's gridsuit is almost impossible because every shot he's in is so fucking dark you can't make it out, like I can literally only use behind the scenes photos.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers! Spread the self-love 💞
I did this on my side blog, but I've written in other fandoms besides Loki so I thought it'd be fun to answer it again. Thank you for the ask! <3
Soothing Waters | Assassin's Creed 2/Brotherhood | Mature, 2k (established relationship, older Leo, flirting, fluff)
A scene of Ezio and Leo's life as they grow old together.
Feelin Nauti | CA: Winter Soldier | Teen & Up, 7k (post-movie, established relationship, dealing with ptsd, flirting, fluff)
Tony convinces Steve and Bucky to take a sailing boat of his out for spin so they can, in his words, "live a little".
No Easy Secret to Keep | Overwatch | Mature, 9k (Werewolf AU, established relationship, flirting, mild hurt/comfort)
Hanzo knew many things about his lover, but not this.
Searching for answers | MDZS | Teen & Up, 48k (Tron: Legacy AU, reunions, BIG family feels)
ENCOM CEO & video game icon Wei Wuxian disappears one night, leaving behind his eight year old son, Wei Yuan, and a world that wonders: What happened to Wei Wuxian? Thirteen years later, a page from a disconnected number sends Wei Yuan down a digital rabbit hole where he'll find even more questions before he gets to the truth.
Found: Extremely Friendly Fox | MDZS | Teen & Up, 22k (modern with cultivation AU, Foxxian, reunions, family feels, tooth-rotting fluff)
Lan Sizhui has never rescued a fox as friendly, intelligent and mischievous as this. How did it get separated from its owner? Wei Wuxian has woken up in a lot of strange places over the years, but he never would have expected to wake up in the house of a Lan.
One thing I noticed after I'd picked my 5 is some reoccurring themes that honestly come as no surprise. I really enjoy writing established relationships because it allows for flirting and casual intimacy and general schmoop (if readers even remember that word). I'm also really big on family feels (especially found family) and reunions often go hand-in-hand with that.
Special shout-out to my Weiss Kreuz fic I didn't list here because the writing is older and the fandom is so niche in this day and age, but it still has a special place in my heart.

Things from Garrett’s panel at Megacon:
Said he crashes on Charlie’s Hunnam’s couch and that Charlie was the main motivator behind him starting to go to conventions.
Also explained he and Charlie are each others biggest supporters. Roles they audition for will usually come down to him, Charlie or some other guy. He said he and Charlie always hope one of them gets it, but it usually always ends up going to the other guy.
Joked about feeling inadequate compared to Charlie, because Charlie had shirtless photos at his booth that fans could get signed. Their booths were right next to each other too, so he said he was always looking over and just seeing the pictures.
Talked about filming Triple Frontier, and how the other guys would get to go out and relax on the beach (“Oscar Isaac is out there shirtless and sipping from a drink with a little umbrella in it”) while he was practicing three hours a day for a Benny fight scene that ultimately got cut.
Still expressed how much he loved filming Triple Frontier, and getting to work with Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac and Charlie.
Had the whole room laughing and giggling tbh, like he is actually so effortlessly funny.
Talked about how he’s fascinated by the beatnik generation, specifically Jack Kerouac and how he tried to get in character for his role in On the Road by road-tripping during his free time and trying to write in the beatnik style. He said he liked how freeing the writing from that era felt, like a free flow of thoughts. (So real for that tbh, I did like three presentations on the beatniks in high school because they are truly so intriguing)
Talked about Tim McGraw and how they met when Tim played his character’s dad in Friday Night Lights. Also talked about Rhodes (his son) a little bit and how Tim is Rhodes grandfather.
The last question of the Q&A portion was had he ever pulled from his own personal life in order to portray a character (specifically did him losing his father in real life impact how he portrayed Sam in Tron: Legacy). Garrett said no, that he tried to keep his personal life separate from the characters and tried not to entangle a role into personal matters. He also explained that Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy director) fought Disney to keep Garrett’s contract open ended, so that he wouldn’t be tied down to filming while his father’s health was declining and could be with his family when he needed to be.
Stayed after a little bit, even when they were clearly trying to get him off the stage, to talk to fans and take pictures. He was like that all day tbh, very committed to giving each person their individual time and trying to connect with everyone.

I have previously mentioned the rumor that the reason for why Flynn wears a cloth wrap in the digital world is because the tights were a little too revealing around Jeff Bridges' crotch.
Tumblr media
Today I was looking at a picture of Quorra, and I realized that there was something... familiar about her outfit. Specifically, that skirt of hers, just long enough to cover up her butt.
Tumblr media
There are plenty of other female characters in Tron Legacy who don't wear skirts, but tight-fitting suits of the same kind as the guys. It made me wonder... Could Olivia Wilde have had a situation similar to Jeff Bridges? Could there, in fact, be a challenger to Bruce Boxleitner's legendary rear end?
Tumblr media
And if Disney didn't think that Bruce needed covering up... Then just how much more extraordinary would Wilde's behind have to be to warrant it?
I like to imagine that when Bridges first saw Wilde in her costume, he just gave her a knowing smile. "You too, huh?"

Favorite color: Black, pthalo blue and green
Last song: The TRON: Legacy soundtrack
Last movie: Willow
Currently watching: Nothing’s really captured my interest right now!
Other stuff I watched this year: As far as as new (or new to me) movies and shows are concerned, here are the good ones: Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, The Martian, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. I’ve also seen a loooooot of terrible movies this year XD
Shows I dropped this year/didn’t finish: The Mandalorian season 3. I finished out the season but I’m mad enough about it that I’m not touching anything that comes after it with a ten foot pole 😒
Currently reading: Secrets of Soulford, Rose Tide Rising, and Blacksmith on Webtoons, Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina edited by Kevin J. Anderson, The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian by Phil Szostak, a bunch of other Star Wars reference books
Currently listening to: A lot of movie soundtracks!
Currently working on: Halloween costume for this year (I’m going as Zorro), Christmas shopping, and transcribing a lot of scrap notes to one of my nice notebooks.
Current obsession: Secrets of Soulford and Rose Tide Rising have been recent loves as of this year, and Star Wars has consumed me the last four-ish years. I wasn’t a Star Wars fan until the first season of Mando came out and now I’ve got stacks of reference books and behind the scenes art books taking up a bookcase.

More arrived today, I’m still waiting on the novelization but it’s coming from Britain apparently so who knows when I’ll get it. However I gotta say I’m surprised at how big Betrayl is. It’s a light read but I was expecting a smaller comic issue

Bally Midway's "Tron" Arcade marquee
Released in 1982 by Bally Midway, "Tron" is an arcade game that was developed alongside the groundbreaking Disney film of the same name. Both the film and the game were instrumental in showcasing the potential of computer graphics in entertainment, making "Tron" a landmark in both cinematic and video game history. The game itself is not just a tie-in but an extension of the film's aesthetic and themes, exploring the concept of living inside a digital world, a notion that was revolutionary at the time.
Technological and Historical Context
The early 1980s marked a period of rapid evolution in video games, with developers exploring new ways to integrate storytelling and advanced graphics into gameplay. "Tron" was released during the golden age of arcade games, a time characterized by intense creativity and technological advancement. The film "Tron" was notable for being one of the first major motion pictures to make extensive use of computer-generated imagery (CGI), and the arcade game sought to bring that visual style to the gaming world.
Gameplay and Design
"Tron" consists of four distinct mini-games, each based on different scenes from the movie. The games include:
Light Cycles: Perhaps the most iconic of the four, this game has players controlling a light cycle that leaves a solid trail behind it. The goal is to trap the other cycles with your trail while avoiding walls and the trails of other cycles.
Grid Bugs: Players must destroy grid bugs and clear a path to the I/O tower within a set time.
Battle Tanks: In this mini-game, players control a tank and navigate a maze-like battlefield, destroying enemy tanks.
MCP Cone: The objective is to break through blocks spinning around the MCP's cone by firing at them, without getting hit by returning fire.
These mini-games are accessed from a central hub, a design choice that not only provided variety but also reflected the segmented nature of the digital world depicted in the film.
Graphical Innovations
"Tron" utilized colorful and detailed raster graphics, which were advanced for the time and provided a visual fidelity that mirrored the high-tech, neon-infused aesthetic of the film. The game was one of the first to use a blacklight in the cabinet, which made its fluorescent colors stand out, enhancing the visual experience and drawing players in arcades.
Control and Interface
The game featured a unique control scheme, including a rotary dial for aiming and a joystick for movement, which were innovative at the time. This setup allowed for precise control, which was necessary for navigating the game's various challenges.
Sound and Narrative Elements
"Tron" featured pioneering sound design, with audio that closely mimicked the electronic score of the film. This integration of sound helped immerse players in the digital world of Tron, enhancing the game's futuristic feel.
Impact and Legacy
"Tron" was critically acclaimed and commercially successful, becoming one of the most memorable arcade games of the 1980s. Its success helped solidify the concept of games as a viable promotional tool for films and demonstrated the potential for cross-media convergence.
Technologically, "Tron" pushed forward the notion that video games could be both visually stunning and complex in design. The game's emphasis on multiple types of gameplay within a single cabinet anticipated later developments in arcade and console gaming, where multi-genre games became more common.
Conclusion
The arcade game "Tron" stands as a significant achievement in the history of video gaming, notable for its technological innovation, distinctive design, and its role in the broader context of 1980s pop culture. By bridging the gap between cinema and video gaming, "Tron" not only captured the imagination of a generation but also pointed the way toward the future of interactive entertainment, where the lines between different media would continue to blur. As a historical artifact and as a piece of entertainment, "Tron" remains a fascinating study in the convergence of technology, art, and commercial entertainment.
