Oh boy, now that I'm done with the rewatch it's time to air out some of the grievances I have with the writing choices made regarding the antagonists...
Starting off a little more positive – Merlin's portrayal worked fairly well overall as this arrogant manipulative old jerk of a wizard, who may have noble goals but achieves them via not so honorable methods in the name of the greater good.
It was a pretty good bait-and-switch with the way the show had built up this image of the mysterious and benevolent mage, but left enough hints to his true character via little details that quickly turn sour in hindsight once you've actually met him. He's not a villain, but they did make him a decent morally gray character in the few episodes he's around.
However, I think he should've been held more accountable for his actions and behavior, especially when his grand plan doesn't work out because he was too wrapped up in his own head to see the truth.
That leads me to Morgana, the big evil "mastermind" of the show. I have to say, I love how utterly unhinged they made her in the first half of season 3, though she loses some of that by the end of it. I don't really have many complaints about her as a villain, but rather like to nitpick aspects surrounding her character and some missed potential.
Design-wise I find her a little lackluster as someone called "the Eldritch Queen" and while it definitely was a fun idea to contrast Merlin's dark armor with all that gold, I believe they missed the mark a little. They should've gone a step further and contrasted the design even more by giving it a creepy and organic direction. Her "armor" could've been more insectoid and reminiscent of bones or dead wood.
Also, a small thing that always bothers me are the green accents on her, when that was being established as Merlin's color. It does connect them visually in a way, but mostly just feels out of place to me. Now, about that missed potential...
As a queen of shadows, I would've liked if they'd played up her insidious nature a little more. As Claire, instead of immediately trying (and badly failing) to kill the Trollhunter, they should've dragged out the possession a little. She could've used this position to destroy the team from within, test their limits, tear them apart to weaken their will, only to have it all backfire with how much they trust and care for each other. It would've paralleled Angor's approach, because considering his background, he must've picked up these methods from someone, no?
Another writing point that bothers me is her imprisonment. No matter how you look at it, sealing an ancient evil sorceress inside (or even near) the heartstone – a MAJOR source of pure energy – just sounds like an all around bad idea. Wouldn't it make sense for her to feed on that energy? And even if not that, shouldn't you be worried about her corrupting it??
I get that from an animation standpoint it's an extremely convenient way to have everything happening in one place, so you don't actually have to set up so many new assets, but man... it's just kind of stupid lol.
Honestly the way I would've rationalized this whole deal is: instead of having her sealed up in Arcadia Oaks, California of all places (why did they even end up there?) she could've been imprisoned within the previous Trollmarket in europe. Her and Gunmar have tried to bring about the Eternal Night before and almost succeeded, which led to the battle of Killahead, where both were sealed away.
Imagine Gunmar and his forces had taken the old Trollmarket and used its heartstone for that spell, draining it in the process. Although they were stopped and defeated, Trollmarket was destroyed and their rock of sustenance dead, which would prompt the trolls to leave and seek a new home across the globe.
Merlin could've trapped Morgana in the empty heartstone as a way to contain her powers, using the last of his magic. Maybe the reason he was so sure she would be weak and easy to vanquish after her imprisonment is because he had intended to slowly syphon her energy to empower himself and never considered that she would figure out how to reverse the spell to drain him instead.
And to add some flavor to this location, Morgana's presence could've twisted the old Trollmarket into something eery and barely recognizable, giving others reason to avoid this place. It could've served to show the heroes what may become of their beloved Trollmarket if Gunmar wins, given them more incentive to fight for what they have.
That's just an idea though.
Angor Rot was always a big pot of missed potential to me and his return in season 3 just ended up feeling, well, hollow lol. He was introduced as a great antagonist but in my honest opinion kinda fell off the moment they destroyed his soul and just turned him into an angry beast. Besides the overall bad taste it leaves behind, we really didn't need a Bular 2. And it's a little annoying they somewhat continued with that direction even when he was revived and supposedly got his soul back.
I like that they cared enough to dig a little into his conflicting emotions given his history & enslavement, but these moments should've been brought up in the climax of the first season. He should've regained his soul back then and suddenly be forced to reconcile with the atrocities committed in the name of his mistress. His revenge on Strickler should've conflicted with his newly regained conscience...
And, oh man, Strickler is a bit of an annoying case. It's kind of absurd to me that they would choose to give this man an easy "redemption" while tossing around Angor's corpse like that.
Angor Rot literally had his soul and autonomy taken from him and while these actions definitely twisted him throughout the ages, at the end of the day it was never his choice. Strickler was in a somewhat similar situation as a changeling made to serve Gunmar, but the major difference is that he did have a choice. Multiple even.
Even in his predicament, Angor chose to offer the Trollhunter a deal to free both of them of Strickler's control. Whether he actually would've honored that deal is hard to say, but I think even if he'd betrayed Jim's trust, it would've made for a good opportunity to speak of who he used to be and what he's become, and have his first real choice in centuries be to spare them.
Strickler on the other hand is far more vile and self-serving at his core. At first you could argue that it's mostly the (very real) threat of Bular breathing down his neck that pushes him to harm Jim despite his soft spot for the kid. But when both Bular and Gunmar are out of the picture, instead of using this freedom constructively, he doubles down on killing the Trollhunter while finding every opportunity to get under his skin.
This man literally chooses to continue beefing with a teenager and don't get me wrong, I love it. Comedy aside, it is genuinely a fun exploration of his character and what makes him work as a complex personal antagonist. But the fun quickly stops when they try to rush him into a lackluster "redemption arc" to get him on the main team.
I'm aware that tons of people love the stricklake pairing and "lady x monster man" is very much a del Toro staple, but I really don't think Strickler should've been "redeemed" given everything he did, there should've been FAR more serious repercussions. It would've made more sense to me to put him in a "reluctant, not entirely trustworthy, sort-of-ally" position than suddenly have him be one of the Good Guys because... romance?
Not to mention the quality of their writing and characterization took quite a dip to mend their relationship and make said last minute romance happen. The drama surrounding it was cheesed up to such a degree it felt like they were putting on a play and didn't tell anyone.
Nomura's turnaround makes perfect sense narratively speaking because she was a straight-forward, impersonal antagonist, who only began to sympathize with the enemy when they were forced into the same position and she had nothing left to lose. She probably gave Jim a few nightmares, but the Lakes don't have anywhere near the number of reasons to hate her as they should with Strickler.
Oh and on the topic of changelings, let's get to the Janus Order. In my honest opinion, I think the Order was an overall waste. What made the changelings fun to me was precisely how they jumped between playing human and the cruel brutality of their monstrous nature. They weren't really a blend of these two worlds, but rather just putting on an act.
That's what made examples like Strickler, Nomura, and NotEnrique emotionally toeing the line of what it means to be human so interesting. Because they aren't human, but have learned to love the world they live in. And it's also what would've made Jim's transformation so strange/special, because he actually would've embodied joining those worlds.
The Janus Order both visually and narratively throws a wrench into that for no reason. (And don't get me started on the whole "evil, politically powerful organization secretly controlling the world" deal..........)
The way I could actually see a point to that direction, is if it had been a relatively inconsequential side-plot where the Janus Order is more like a small-scale cult of humans or even low-grade sorcerers worshipping the Pale Lady. It could've been a one or two episode issue that would've mainly served to build up some lore & foreshadowing surrounding Morgana, before she would've made her big entrance in the third season.
Ah... and even Gunmar could've been handled much better in the later seasons. Bular isn't a perfect character, but he serves his purpose as the introductory villain fairly well and for a kids show like that, it's a sensible execution.
Gunmar's character started out very strong – as the presumed endboss, they combined Bular's intimidation factor and Strickler's conniving nature with him and added some class as a millennia old monster warlord. It works fantastically. While that image falls a little here and there, his portrayal in the Darklands still makes sense as someone who seemingly lost all hope and resigned himself to his eternal prison... and even then he displayed a malicious sort of patience by wanting to break Jim's spirit instead of simply killing him.
So for that to quickly turn into an impatient old man, who just barks out threats and orders and blindly follows whatever anyone tells him the moment he's on the surface... it, well, is pretty disappointing. It's understandable for Bular, the younger and less experienced son, to be rash and impatient, but a warlord? That's a position that requires a ton of patience and tactical prowess.
I really wish they would've kept the way he was presented in the first season and give us this big villain who's not only physically scary, but observational and dedicated enough to send Chompsky back with a message saying he'll kill all those Jim holds dear for killing his son and then listing literally everyone the kid knows.
Plus, his origin as some kind of actual monster born from a corrupted heartstone should've been explored! They could've gone into that endless hunger he apparently displays, that would've made him consume countless living creatures and even drain the magic energy out of crystals...
Instead we ended up with Bular 2 again, but even worse somehow, and it just made Gunmar about as threatening as a parked truck.

I’d make an excellent lawyer in the ToA universe. Most importantly in Jim’s trial.
Some points I’d make are:
By American laws, Queen Usurna has one count of attempted murder against Jim, and is the most insistent on getting him killed. Who’s to say she doesn’t have something to hide?
(This is mostly pettiness) Gatto is part of the tribunal and he EATS PEOPLE. So it’s clear that they shalt not judge.
While Jim was an idiot in going in alone, he’s not the one that opened the Killahead bridge when his friends saved him. Thus, he is not solely responsible for Gunmar’s escape.
Why was the bargain for Jim’s case to either destroy the amulet or go through a trial? Sure, destroying the amulet could have worked back when it was only Bular, but now with Gunmar on the loose, Troll society needs it now more than ever.
Gatto also has several murder charges and an attempted murder charge, get him the hell out of here.
Literally, the Quagawump* queen and Vendel seem to be the only two lacking a personal vendetta.
Jim was saving a life when he went into the darklands. His friends were saving his life when they went in after him. Both of these cases are justified.
(*can’t spell it—)

Trollhunter!Nomura AU (part 3 (1/2))
Tumblr media
This AU was made by me and @elegantjellyfishwerewolf
First two parts: part 1 / part 2
And while Claire is hanging out in the Darklands, at the Trollmarket everything is not so good... The fact is that if Gunmar would catch Claire and take the amulet from her along with the staff of the shadow, then nothing would prevent him from doing the same trick with the mark and the amulet and open the bridge from the other side. The team of trollhunters is suppressed. Nomura is ready to kill Claire when she will see her. Jim is afraid of losing another loved one (I think he won't stand another death of his loved one person). Angor feels used again. Claire was one of the first people he began to trust after he finally got his soul back, and the theft of the staff by his own student literally knocked the ground out from under his feet (he understands that he has become attached to the girl and that he would not like to see her die). The rest of the team are either worried about Claire or afraid because of the threat of Gunmar's return.Due to the panic, Queen Usurna arrives at the Trollmarket and gathers a council of elders, at which she puts forward a demand to dismantle the bridge and hide its fragments so that no one else will find them. Nomura is even ready to renounce the amulet and not interfere with the council's decision in any way. Blinky is extremely dissatisfied with the current situation and openly tells the trollhunter that she has to respond to any call and that despite the fact that Nomura left the order, she still remains a hostage of the fear in front of Gunmar. Nomura is not immediately available, but still agrees to go to the Darklands. But she also says that she is not going there to save Claire, but to return the amulet and not let Gunmar a chance to escape. At this time, Claire finds her brother in the Darklands and, just like in the original, she manages to free Enrique, but she herself is captured by gumgums who lead her to Gunmar. The Grubers are already going to pick up the fragments of the bridge, but at this time Nomura, Angor and Blinky come to the rest of the team. They knock out Usurna's soldiers and use a whirlwind to transfer all the fragments to a safe place. The team of trollhunters understands that it is impossible to delay any longer. And therefore, with the help of the dark magic Angor becomes possessed by Kanjigar, and after the spirit of the last trollhunter replaces the amulet and opens the bridge. Nomura, Blinky, Aargh and Angor are going to the Darklands for Claire (Nomura and Angor say they only go for the amulet and staff), Draal, as in the original, remains to guard the passage of bridge. At this time, Claire is brought to Gunmar's throne room where he notices her amulet and staff and orders his soldiers to take them away from her, but Claire quickly deals with them with the help of the staff. Then Gunnar decides to personally kill Claire and take the "key to his release" from her. A long fight ensues between them during which Claire breaks her daggers on Gunmar's thick skin, he also takes advantage of this and breaks her left arm and leg, simultaneously crushing a couple of ribs and breaking her head.Claire thinks this is the end, but then the trollhunter team arrives. Blinky and Aaarrrgha take Claire and leave while Nomura and Angor return their weapons and stay to detain Gunmar. Blinky and Aargh also stumble upon the Dictatious with a detachment of gumgums. There is a commotion, during which Blinky snatches one of soldiers’ spear and blinds his brother with it. Nomura and Angor also join the team after they think they have weakened Gunmar for a while. They run to the bridge, but along the way they are squeezed from all sides by Gunmar's army. At this moment Draal appears on the vortex and helps his friends get out before the bridge will close. Angor urgently transfers Claire, who is in a dying state, to the shadow realm, where he performs a ritual to inject dark magic into Claire in order to save her life.Gunmar takes advantage of the fact that Draal has left his post and, together with the Dictatous and several gumgums, gets out to the
surface. Strickler was discouraged by Gunmar's return, but still remains cold-blooded and pretends that he has been waiting for the dark lord's return all this time and brings him to Order of Janus.Claire wakes up in the infirmary inside the Heartstone. She continues to feel the echoes of pain, but they are not as strong as in the Darklands. Claire also notices that one of her strands has turned gray.

My top villains (from dumb to smart)
Warning: This post is not intended to offend anyone, the author is just sharing his observations
In this post, I decided to make up the top villains of trollhunters from the dumbest to the smartest (as for me, such tops are much more interesting than the placement of characters by strength, because in most cases you already know who will be in first place). The actions of villains from trollhunters only will be evaluated here.
10) Morgana:
Tumblr media
Her main problem is that she does using her arsenal of spells on maximum and instead of attacking with shots of magical energy from a safe distance, she creates small energy daggers and goes into close combat, although this makes no sense (it is as if gunmar, fighting with his sword, tried not to hit the opponent with a sharp blade, but tried to hit him with the hilt of the sword). Her second fatal mistake is that she gave Angor freedom and was genuinely surprised when he betrayed her and decided to take revenge for everything she did to him (What prevented her from taking Angor's soul again so that he would not betray her at the most crucial moment?). And can someone explain to me why she didn't kill Merlin at the end of the third season? That is, she just tossed him from side to side, throughout the series she said how she wanted to kill him, and then just left him alive and went to deal with the hunter?
9) Otto:
Tumblr media
For some reason, he sincerely believed that Gunmar cared about changelings and that Gunmar would lead them to a bright future. But what a surprise! It turns out Gunmar didn't care about changelings from the beginning, well, yes, he never hid his disdain for them. Someone will call it loyalty, but for me it's dibilism when you betray the current head of the Order of Janus and instead of taking the vacant throne yourself, you kindly waited for the tyrant who eventually used you.
8) Bular:
Tumblr media
As for me, Bular is one of the most impulsive characters in the whole series. The most striking example is when in the second series, literally in the middle of the day, in a place where there could be unwanted witnesses, he decided to attack a new hunter and, as expected, was defeated. He also continues to underestimate his opponent, even when Jim killed stalking, it is not surprising that with such disregard for the enemy, he died before all the antagonists.
7) Goblin from the episode about creepslayerz:
Tumblr media
He appeared relatively little on the screen compared to other villains, but during this time he, firstly, set Steve and Eli on Jim, and secondly, led the Creepslayerz on a false trail, thereby preventing them from finding out about their plans ahead of time.
6) Gunmar:
Tumblr media
My main problem with Gunmar is that without asking for any proof, he believed all the nonsense that the Dictatus told him. I also think that Gunmar should be aware of the technical superiority of people (at least from Strickler's presentation) and that is why, instead of sending changelings to intercept at least a couple of warheads, he arranges their genocide. It's really funny that in the end Morgana needed a changeling to free him, and I'm just wondering what he would have done if Nomura and Strickler hadn't been in town? (I think he would catch a random person on the street and give him free troll language lessons)
5) Nomura:
Tumblr media
She doesn't rank higher in the rankings just because she underestimated Jim in the first season. To be honest, I can't remember if she has had similar mistakes before, and compared to previous places, she is much less impulsive.
4) Angor:
Tumblr media
As for me, Angor from the first season is a reference villain, almost all of whose actions are thoughtful and balanced decisions, for example, he reasonably did not trust Strickler and his promise that he would let him go as soon as trollhunter will die, so he did not immediately kill Jim, but only intimidated him so that our troll hunter had more reasons to make a deal with Angor and steal infernacopula. Well, the most striking example is that Angor will first study his enemy, and only then go into battle. if they hadn't made a cartoon villain out of him at the end of the first season, who, instead of immediately stabbing his defeated opponent, rolls up a long monologue about how weak our new hunter is without his friends, then in this top you Angor would have stood much higher (but despite this, he is still one of my favorite characters).
3) Usurna:
Tumblr media
You might reasonably ask why she stands so high in the top if she supported Gunmar on an equal footing with Otto? To which I will answer that unlike Otto, who was looking forward to the return of the cruel lord, Usurna tried her best not to let Gunmar escape from the dark lands and joined him only when she knew for sure that he had returned, in fact, she simply chose the strongest, and therefore the winning side. And I think it's worth admitting that no matter how mean a bitch she is, she can reasonably reason that by sacrificing a pair of cubs of Kruber, she will thereby delay Gunmar's desire to attack her people for a sufficiently long time, and if the dark lord still falls, she can say that her children were simply kidnapped (which was common at that time (if we recall the background of the creation of changelings) so no matter how you look at it, in any case, it remains a winner.
2) Strickler:
Tumblr media
(who could doubt that he would be so high in the ranking) I am still sure that he helped in the liberation of Gunmar only out of fear of Bular, because as soon as Bular fell, Strickler immediately took the vacant throne, leaving Gunmar in the dark lands. Strickler, as well as Angor, will not be the first to rush into battle, he will most likely just shift all the dangerous and dirty work to someone else, since the status allows. Also, he always plans an escape plan if something goes wrong, if he hadn't created a magical connection with Barbara then he wouldn't have had any leverage on Jim and therefore the hunter wouldn't have had any reason to protect Strickler from Angor. He is not in the first place only because instead of hiring a hired sniper who would quickly kill a young hunter and left, no! instead, he awakens an ancient killer who, if he can take the ring, will kill his unfortunate master first thing. Although if he also awakened Angor in order to strengthen his status as the head of the Order, then there are no complaints, but due to the fact that in the series itself Strickler said that he brought Angor only to kill Jim, then alas it was too unjustified a risk
1) Dictatious:
Tumblr media
To begin with, he was able to survive in the dark lands for several centuries, so he was also able to become the right hand of Gunmar himself, who clearly respects only the strong, and the Dictatus, to put it mildly, is a so-so warrior. Further, after the Dictatus lost his sight and became virtually useless to Gunmar, he was still able to remain his most trusted subordinate (yes, this whole topic with Morgan's visions looks ridiculous to me, given that the Dictatus had no evidence of the truthfulness of his words, but most importantly, it worked). Also, the Dictatus has never had an insane devotion to Gunmar, he joined him only because otherwise he would not have survived, which is why he so easily switches to the side of the hunter and at the end of the series remains to chill in Toby's house.

Hi there Pinky! When it comes to Trollhunters, who is your favorite female character from the show, and who is your least favorite character?
Ooh. That's a hard one on favourites..
I've got two! Barbara Lake, because she's ruthless and always ready to lay hands, yet is also a compassionate and kind doctor who sees the best in people (and puts Strickler in his place lol).
And Nomura. She's just a badass and one of the only characters to actually hurt Jim enough to flipping send him to the hospital.
No other character does that. (not counting Morgana, The green knight or the Acrane order, as they're on another level) Also she loves Peer Gynt. That is all.
As for least favourite... Also got two!
Usurna, because she killed Vendel by stabbing him in the back. And hurt Aaarrrgghh. Unforgivable.
And Kubritz, because she was inconsistently written and bad for the sake of being bad, until she wasn't. I feel she could have had a lot better character arc than ending with being literally stomped on by Morando.

Do you have thoughts and headcanons on Usurna and Dictatious’ relationship with each other?
ALRIGHT FINALLY ANSWERING THIS, VERY SORRY ANON FOR THE WAIT 🙏 I am a terrible blog owner I knowww 😔
Anyways it's time to talk about the ship that I am the sole fan of
for starters i gotta mention their ship being called Dicsurna, I love how every ship with Dictatious in it is utterly doomed from the get go in terms of names
And I'm aware I brought this scene up before in my original post on them but THIS SCENE MAN THIS FUCKING SCENE-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THERE WAS NO REASON FOR YOU TO GRAB HIS FACE AND PULL HIM IN LIKE THAT???? you could've grabbed his shoulders or arms and made the same exact point Usurna, like girl what are you doing
Tumblr media
Also I'm probably reaching here but idc I love how Usurna has what looks like some form of concern for Dictatious as he's yoinked by Gunmar
Just- man giggling and kicking my feet @ them so hard, They so have some kind of toxic situationship going on you can't convince me otherwise guys sorry
Like hrrrghhmmmmTheyre so just using the other for their own benefits at the end of the day but deep deep deeeep down maybe they have some form of care/appreciation for the other.
Okay going into the self indulgent aka HC territory now boys
Dictatious would definitely be the more physically affectionate one of the two, I mean when you're stuck in the Darklands for [Insert how many years here] with your only company being Gunmar and a bunch of brainwashed troll soldiers I'd suspect you'd get a teeny weeny touch starved 🤏
Also he's almost always seen holding onto the back of Usurnas hand/arm so yeah case in point
I imagine they maybe wouldn't realize eachother progressively getting closer overtime (and genuinely enjoy eachothers company to some extent) till someone else pointed it out/questioned them about it which they'd then instantly deny it and call the person “absurd for even entertaining such a thought”
Usurnas way of showing affection would definitely be more on the subtler side mostly, like quickly knocking something aside/steering Dictatious away from something he could stumble and trip on, squeezing his hand/arm, ect
Honestly that's all I got on them really since I imagine their dynamic being relatively the same as in canon just more touchy feely behind closed doors i guess idk乁(ツ)∫

Incorrect Quotes for the Ben 10 Trollhunters Crossover
Vendel : Troll law states that the accused may only be represented by his own tribe
Userna: The rules are quite clear on this matter, only a human may speak for the accused
(Jim turns into Pandora)
Jim: Does this help?
(Pandora is the best choice since Blinky could help him with the trial, but wouldn't it have been funny if Jim turned into Mystic for a second just to annoy Userna for a second into thinking she or Aaaarrrgh had to help represent him as members of his "tribe" 😜)
This is so accurate. Jim would honestly go Mystic first just to watch Usurna simmer in rage before going to Pandora. He's a little shit and will make that known.

I seriously don't understand Usurna.
After stabbing Vendel she says she's disappointed that he wont be around for Gunmar's "glorious return" but at the same time she was the leader most determined to destroy the bridge to prevent Gunmar from returning.....
