Paragliding stringed instrument.

So, we flew from the Telepherique (Le Saleve) today, early on to avoid the huge thermic turbulence after lunch due to the intense heat (35c upwards). A plan was formulated to forward launch my M6 (first ever), pull big ears (first time on my M6) and put a bit of bar on. The forward launch was perfect (#Ianthechimp did scamper around the wing and check every line). We flew out, turned left over the cable car lines and headed towards the landing field at Troinex. I looked up at my wing and lines. Ian then decided it would be FUN to pull other lines than the outer A's. He even yanked hard on the outer B's.... what the feck. I looked up and one wing tip was pulling much forward than the rest of the wing. I was amazed at no collapse, rock solid. Ian then started to twang the other lines TO SEE WHAT WOULD FECKING HAPPEN.... SHITE..... Nothing, a super rock solid wing...wow. Ian finally figured out which were the outer A's, and slipped 2 fingers around each and pulled.... nowt.... bugger my big ears are broken. So Ian slipped the other 4 banana fingers and thumbs around the lines... a hard hard pull, the ears came in, but not huge. We had to hold them in as well, about 1/4 bar and stable. Bar off and let go of the A's, twang twang... both ears out with no brake pulling...this wing has a mind of it's own... I JUST WANT TO FLY. We found some small weak thermals over the greenhouses near landing.... suck..... the wing just accelerates nose first into the thermals.... wow, a turn, a climb, dropped out of the thermal, hands up....suck...whoosh... accelerates into the thermal again... so impressed. We flew around a bit, climbed up using the weak thermals, light brakes and weight shift....super. landed at Troinex with nil wind like a dream.... I love my M6. Ian's piano twanging in the sky proved to me how amazing this wing was.....wow.

Off back up the mountain with Tracey on the scooter... a nice cool breeze up my shorts....

9.24  Geneva Parasailing!

Crazy?  Maybe....but is there any better way to see the Alps?!

A leisurely morning walk about the village discovering a lovely meadow with bee hives (the man made kind) and to explore an old  lumber mill.  Wade of course was very appreciative of the antique machinery still present and the post and beam construction of the barn.

As planned, we headed 20 min back toward Geneva to The Paradelta Flying School in Troinex, Switzerland, for my flight.  In a large grassy field amidst greenhouses and crops of onions and potatoes, we found the Paradelta building.  I was suited up in hiking boots and a nylon jacket then sent out to meet my pilot, Gilles.  We spoke in French-English as he loaded a very large, but not overly heavy pack on my back and directed me to the van.  Along with 4 French pilots and their students we snaked up the road 20 min to the summit of Mont Saleve, France....elevation 1400m (4500 ft).

With the pack on, I followed the group uphill through high pastures and into a clearing.  The cows were grazing, all with leather collars and traditional Swiss brass bells.  The clink clink of the bells, moos & green pastures... the backdrop of the mountains dressed in autumn colors was....well, picturesque.

Gilles spread our chute/sail over the meadow, straightened the lines and gently pulled them several times to fully expand the nylon.  He then instructed me to stand facing the cliff as he strapped the seat-like harness to my chest, waist and legs.  With minimal instructions necessary, he got behind me and said to run...straight toward the edge of the cliff that is?!

Within seconds we were gently airborne and floating high above Mont Saleve as the harness became a comfy seat.  The air was fresh and cool.  The views vast and varied.  Looking down were squares of fields, scattered villages, a few roads and the entirety of Lake Geneva!  I could even see the Jet d’Eau.  Back toward the take off field I could see the other flyers preparing and taking off. ��And the rest of my view, as far as I could see, were the Alps.  Their bases covered with greens, reds and emerging golds; their tops craggy with snow spots.

Back and forth we sailed, ascending....descending, then ascending again.  Gilles wanted to show me Mont Blanc, which was behind our landing area and required “climbing the thermals”.  He explained how he had to “feel the air” to identify the thermals, then “lean into them”.  What it felt like to me was a series of spiral maneuvers, each drawing us higher and higher.....until there was Mont Blanc!

The rest of our flight was a lazy glide... absorbing the grandness and splendor of nature.  As we lowered to the grassy landing pasture, Gilles told me to stand only when my feet touched the ground.  It was as simple as that, floating slowly down to a soft stand and done!  The chute/sail collapsed behind us and I saw Wade coming my way for the “after” photo.

Very magnificent.  Very memorable.
