To Answer the Call (Wardens at Ostagar), Ch. 8
Summary: The time has come for the Joining, and the recruits gather with Duncan and the other Wardens to undergo the mysterious ritual.  No one can predict what will happen, only that it will change their lives irrevocably...
AO3: Here.
A/N: As a heads-up to any tumblr-readers I have here; I renamed the ao3 version of this fic because I’m going to be breaking up my huge DAO narrative into individual stories that deal with each arc of the narrative.  All of these mini-stories will go in one single series, which is going to be what keeps the title To Answer the Call.  I am also going to start posting just previews here on tumblr, while linking to the ao3 version of the story because these chapters are getting longer, and I don’t have scripts that help me format everything quicker… xD Apologies for any inconvenience!
-----
Preview:
They didn’t have long to rest.  As soon as everyone was able to stand on their own, Duncan herded them to a secluded corner of the camp and bade them wait.  Richu and Grigor had gone to the healing tents to fetch Velyn.  Alistair and Rondall were left to stay with the recruits and guard the Joining site.
The night was dark enough, at least, that no curious onlookers from the king’s camp would see them.
Always find a silver lining, Alistair thought darkly.
The unease was palpable. The recruits were wary and tense. Ser Jory was the only one moving, pacing back and forth, face tight, gait stiff.
“This damned Joining,” he muttered. “The more I hear of it, the less I like it.”
Beside him, Daveth groaned, “Enough with your blubbering, ser knight.  It’s already happening, isn’t it?  Might as well shut up.”
Ser Jory made a frustrated noise.  “Of course you’d say that, you don’t—”  He broke off and exhaled carefully, hands twitching at his side.  His face was a twisted scowl of pain and frustration.  Alistair exchanged a wary look with Rondall.
“Look, Ser Jory,” he began in what he hoped was a sufficiently calm voice. “It’s going to be—”
“Have I not earned my place?” Ser Jory demanded, barreling through Alistair’s attempt at reassurance. “These damned tests, I—What is the purpose of lying to us about it all?”
“You’re going to be fine, Ser Jory—” Alistair tried again.  Daveth’s sharp scoff cut him off.
“Who gives a damn?” he sneered.  His eyes were hard, gaze locked firmly on Ser Jory.  “Maybe it’s tradition.  Or maybe they’re just trying to annoy you.  Damned easy thing to do, isn’t it?”
That got Ser Jory’s hackles up.  “Lying to us is tradition, then?”  His voice was rising.  Alistair shot another look Rondall’s way.  Could use a little help here.
Rondall stepped forward, “Alright, that’s enough—”
“All these secrets, all these tests, and what purpose do they serve!?  There is no honor in it—”
“Honor?”  Daveth marched forward to meet Ser Jory in challenge. “What would you know of honor?  The way you’re griping about it.”
“I know more of the matter than you, clearly—”
“Clearly!  Clearly, you’re talking out your arse.  You’d cut and run at the smallest thing, not even thought about why they might be having us go through all this—”
“To sacrifice us without our knowledge—”
“Because you wouldn’t be here if they’d told you what you’d be doing, and someone has to stop this damned Blight!  You saw those darkspawn out there, same as I!  You want to talk about honor?  What about that pretty wife of yours you keep going on about?  Isn’t it the honorable thing to want to protect her? Wouldn’t you die if it meant keeping her safe?”
Ser Jory’s face was ashen. “Of course, I—”
“Maybe you’ll die,” Daveth snarled through gritted teeth. “Maybe we’ll all die.  If nobody stops the darkspawn, then we’ll all die for sure.”
“They still should have told us.  My wife—” Ser Jory’s eyes were bright, wet with tears, the pupils dark and small.  Fearful.  “If I’d have known, I—I wouldn’t have left—”
“That’s enough!”
End Preview.

Summary:
Note written by Gemria Bozzahr, 1438 DR, found pinned to the swaddling of a corpse-blue, wailing infant boy: "If you've any care for the weak, please find one who may care for him. I cannot face my family as mother to a half-breed. May he find grace in the glory of your god, and let him bear the name 'Arvid', after the father he may never know."
A bastard son born from but one night shared by a trader's daughter and a handsome duergar soldier, Arvid was raised by clerics of Tempus in a small and insignificant monastery/fortress, in a small and insignificant town close to Neverwinter. Now, it was unusual for Tempurans to take in urchins like that, but the boy, while unusual in his appearance and meek in his nature, proved a quick study, and a rare talent at healing. Which, with his quiet, mellow (and soon, not even quite so anxious!) personality, made him a favored addition to the "mercenary" excursions of the warrior-priests: and so, hitting the ground running, Arvid learned to fight in the very melting pot of battle.
With body and spirit molded by the Foehammer's teaching, he took his Acolyte vows shortly after his 16th spring, and became a fully fledged cleric of the Faith much younger than most. And as time passed slowly (and with... only a regular amount of constant bloodshed), he made his way to the rank of Direhar (guardian-priest). It was at 53 that he was called to Baldur's Gate: partly to replace the sole healer of the city's monastery who had perished (naturally in battle), and partly at the urging of his Warlyon (high priest), as an opportunity for him to eventually, maybe, even head his own congregation.
Of course, the mind flayers had different plans.
After merely a year of trying to establish a foothold in the city with... middling-to-poor success, Arvid was yanked from the city streets while trying to usher as many of those fleeing into the protection of the temple as possible. Fat load of good playing the hero did for him. (But to be fair, that's... kind of his theme.)
Tumblr media
Iona Raedir (she/her, 61)
High elf sorcerer (draconic ancestry, red)
Guild Artisan background (jeweler/trader)
❤️: Astarion Ancunín
Playlist 🎶
Summary:
"Don't ask, kitten, and I won't lie."
Once dutiful daughter, once devoted wife, always a secret sorceress. Iona lived most of her life in a settlement by the name of Puremount's Hollow, among the so-called 'Emissaries of the Immaculate': a radical offshoot of the Ilmaterian church, one that views all magic as the domain befitting solely the gods, and arcane casters, abhorrent thieves of divine power. So, with the magic of ancient dragons thrumming in her veins, that... was sort of a problem.
To her very good excuse, neither did she join of her own accord, nor did she know she commanded such powers at the time. She was only 11 years old, after all.
But, one of the things elves do best, is wait. So that's what she did, and she played her part expertly: she and her beloved father lived their life in accordance with human traditions, he took a second wife (we don't talk about the first, it's too painful), she married the first boy who asked her (Herric Birchlight- a nice boy, if rough around the edges), and kept her facade (though loveless and rote, minor issue) impeccable, while ignoring her magic as it grew and yearned to be used. For over 30 long years, she kept playing her part. But even the best liars must eventually slip- or be made to slip, more accurately.
Uncovered as an "abominable thief" of divine power, a "pretender", a "fucking witch" and "magespawn" (all Herric's lovely words about the woman he had once called "wife" and "love"), Iona was forced to flee the compound, and took the burning of bridges behind her quite literally, taking little more than the clothes on her back and that brand new scar on her face.
She was snatched less than a day after she had finally arrived to Baldur's Gate, penniless, exhausted, and alone- and for all intents and purposes, she can't quite shake the feeling that this really might have been a better outcome than many of the possible alternatives.
Tumblr media
Petyr Wildbrook (he/him, 45)
Wood half-elf ranger/rogue
Outlander background
❤️: Shadowheart, Halsin Silverbough
Playlist 🎶
Summary:
Raised among druids of the Circle of the Shepherd, Petyr waited quite a bit longer than he should have had to for his magic to show itself. And, well, it... simply never did. Brother, cousins (gods, so many cousins), friends, all inducted into the druidic arts before he could as much as conjure a single goodberry.
So, partly at the urging of his mothers and partly out of spite, Petyr took to trying to learn all he could about the wild- on his own, through sheer trial and error if need be. At 20, he gathered what meager belongings he could call his own (and a big pack of gifts from his worried, but oddly relieved family), and set out to find his luck wherever it may guide him.
Though it wasn't easy, or painless, or even smart by any stretch of the imagination, he fell into the role of a ranger and forester, and made a living as a hunter of monsters and big game, and a silent keeper of his little patch of woods: a lone watcher, and reclusive woodsman. He had always enjoyed the company of those who expect no social niceties from him anyway.
Turns out, the exception to that particular rule is the silent, squirming passenger of a tadpole behind the eyeball. And, yeah, so maybe even a self-identified utter bitch of a man is capable of being a "hero", if you stretch the meaning of the word far enough.

Aren Lorna "Arie" Aeducan (she/her, DAO: 25, DAI: 36, DATV: 46)
"Canon" Warden-Commander
Noble dwarf, sword and board warrior (Berserker+Champion)
❤️: Leliana (softened, Divine)
Aesthetic
Summary:
Aren Lorna Aeducan is a woman forged in fire through and through. Bearing the name- and donning the armor of her late grandmother, she quickly proved herself to be as steadfast and politically shrewd as her namesake.
As she was bred and born a leader and thus grew up an unintentional rival to her elder brother, she is generally proud and poised, unapologetic in her way of carrying herself, and assertive in her opinions which, while driven by a desire to do and be good, are quick to take backseat to a strong emotional motivation- She is as dedicated and passionate in love as she is in duty.
While her assertiveness may make her come off as harsh, stubborn, she is nonetheless essentially benevolent, mindful and supportive of emotions and wants of those around her- keeping people’s best interests at heart, she is diplomatic and ambitious, occasionally sarcastic, with strong convictions of what is right and just, which she intends to enforce and uphold even if that means resorting to less than legal measures. The end, in her eyes, sanctifies the means, even if that end is just the survival of one more person, be it others or herself.
The main conflicts of her character throughout the story are the choices that force her to pick between her compassion and her desire for vindication, and the choice dictated by her royal upbringing in grossly homophobic Orzammar conflicting with her later-life realization of her own bisexuality, with which she grapples until eventually she allows herself to fall in love with Leliana.
While trying to avoid facing her own emotions whenever possible, for the first chunk of the game, she is almost singularly obsessed with the idea of revenge, and until Bhelen’s eventual death at her hands, her personal vendetta takes priority even over the establishment of a stable dynasty that might be best for Orzammar in the wake of the Blight. That anger and defiance that resides in her is eventually placated, and it is only once the faith of Ferelden and Thedas no longer rests on her shoulders that she mellows out, turning from the commander into herself.
Tumblr media
Vogar Brosca (he/him, DAO: 22, DAI: 33, DATV: 43)
Casteless dwarf, dual-wielding warrior (Reaver)
❤️: Zevran
Non-canon Warden, but an unrelated Warden in my head regardless
Vogar Brosca is unequivocally what the Hero of Ferelden should not be- he is abrasive and selfish, almost completely illiterate, and easily the most cynical man Thedas has ever carried, in its belly or on its back.
He carries a lot of anger in him- a lot of envy and jealousy, as well as overall resentment towards most everyone willing to exploit him and people like him. As he is motivated mostly by spite and a drive to prove people wrong, he always strives to show an image of strength and confidence, even though many times he would rather hide under a rock and never again poke his head out- the man has turned “fake it till you make it” into a personal motto and intends to stick to it.
After an adolescence and early adulthood as a Carta grunt (during which he had to sell his sword arm and honor simply to stay alive), he keeps his loyalties fluid, and his morals where his money is; if it suits his fancy, he is prone to reasoning away any and all decisions he might make as reasonable and moral.
As little beyond his love for his sister and his friendship with Leske tied him to the city, he was quick to jump on the opportunity to abandon Orzammar in favor of the promise of an ability to be someone beyond a casteless thug, although he won’t deny that the idea of “pretty and easy Surface girls with knockers the size of my head” also contributed to the decision- the fact that later he happened to find love by the side of a very male assassin who had been sent for his head is but an amusing caprice of fate.
As the game progresses, he grows and changes rather quickly and dramatically- the responsibility of decision-making affects him pretty badly, but the rest of the party poses a whole new set of good and bad examples and influences on him. The surface, where people look at him and say “Ser” instead of spitting, will finally show him an angle of the world which he likes- a world in which his existence is at least acknowledged beyond him being an eyesore. He also manages to eventually overcome his deeply internalized homophobia with Zevran’s help, (come to terms with his now past but then obvious affection for Leske,) and learns to trust and allow people to get close to him.

Raymond "Ray" Percival Trevelyan (he/him, DAI: 24, DATV: 34, BG3: 55)
"Canon" Inquisitor, Inquisitor-as-Tav AU
Human
DA: sword and board warrior (Reaver)
BG3: fighter/Oath of Devotion paladin (noble background)
❤️: DAI- Dorian Pavus, BG3- Wyll Ravengard
Playlist 🎶
Aesthetic
Summary:
There's one thing that is to be said / about him in the years to come: A hero seldom lives to see / past the ending of their tale.
Raymond begins his story a naive, idealistic young man with a passion for the romantic, the sentimental, the dramatic, and the comedic. He is witty and bright, an educated and charming man, but as such, he is also impulsive and brash, immature, and emotional- his decisions are motivated mostly, if not only by his heart, and an almost comical sense of justice.
Inspired heavily as a young teen by the Tale of the Champion and the refugees' tales about the Hero of Ferelden, he aspires to be the great hero Hawke and Lady Aeducan were painted as- while fully aware of how unattainable that ideal might be, he nevertheless aims to become the generous and brave "Knight in Shining Armor" Thedas wants him to be, more or less successfully.
In the beginning of the story, he is deeply Andrastian and practices his religion frequently, but throughout the game, his faith is shaken. Initially, it is his firmly held belief that he is in fact Andraste’s chosen, but confirmation of the opposite at Adamant plants the doubt in his heart that later results in the abandonment of organized Andrastianism, and establishing a rather more lenient, personal relationship with religion.
Throughout the events of the game, as he is faced with more and more injustices and pointless loss of life, his initially neutral-positive views on mage freedom and elf rights quickly radicalize. While the realizations take away a lot of his naiveté and optimism, make him slightly jaded and more skeptical, ultimately he matures and grows as a person. He unlearns a lot of the toxic views he internalized growing up noble, and slowly, with the help of the friends and the love he finds in the Inquisition, he also learns to allow himself to be loved.
At the end, while tired and battered and suffering from moderate- to severe PTSD, the once-green-eared kid emerges a soldier and a man more or less worthy of his title as Inquisitor.
---
The BG3 AU is set roughly 30 years after the events of DAI. After a tumultuous youth of adventuring, ostensibly saving the world (which earned him the moniker "Inquisitor of the Dales"), and the loss of his sword arm in the process, Raymond had retired from heroics young, at merely 25 years of age. Upon the peaceful passing of his father (a minor, but old-money Baldurian baron in this reality), he quickly took to managing the family estate (reconciling a tenuous love with his estranged mother- we don't talk about the past much on that one), and settled in for two joyous decades of blissful domesticity by the side of the love of his life, Dorian.
Except fate has a way of throwing its doomed chosen at increasingly bigger problems, until one finally manages to kill them.
A handful of years pass between the assassination of his husband over blasted politics and his own abduction by mind flayers, and Ray, both dreading and strangely anticipating the adventure, falls back into the role of a leader and a hero like he would into a bad habit, though he is barely a shadow of his once-gregarious, larger-than-life hero self.
Maybe this time, throwing himself at a nigh-immortal god-monster will finally wind up killing him for good. And then, maybe he can finally rest.
Or not. Who knows. At least if he's lucky, fate will take a fucking leg this time.
Tumblr media
Adela Cadash (she/her, DAI: 37, DA:TV: 47)
Surface-born dwarf (Marcher, Tantervale)
Archer rogue (Tempest)
❤️: The Iron Bull
Non-canon Inquisitor
Summary:
Adela Cadash is a woman with an undeniable talent for consciously putting herself into the wrong place at the wrong time. She’s cynical and efficient, energetic- not one to sit idly by and contemplate consequences, more often than not she leaps before she would look. She fixes mistakes as she goes, making a lifestyle out of risk and thrill-seeking, but regardless of what it is into which she’s throwing herself, she always gives off the impression that she is at least one step ahead, even -or especially- when that’s not true.
Perceptive and cunning, Adela is an expert at reading people and giving them who, and what they want her to be. She is flexible and adaptable, clever and shrewd, capable of morphing herself into whoever the situation requires her to be- from the principled dame, through the mother figure, to the commander of war, there is a personality in her arsenal that fits that role, while she keeps her true thoughts and feelings buried six feet under.
As for religion, Adela is mostly agnostic in her views. She is mostly neutral concerning the plight of mages- while she is mostly aware of the injustices, Tantervale's Circle never caused the kind of problems Kirkwall's did, and overall, she holds mostly the same views as Vivienne does- that magic is dangerous as fire is dangerous, and she's not about to let herself get burnt.
She has, however, a passion for the finer things in life- be it food, bathing, or love, she likes to make an event, a spectacle out of the mundane. Be it Orlesian opera, really nice shoes, disgustingly overpriced alcohol, or elaborate, kinky sex, she is not one for saving things for special occasions- to her, having lived most of her life in mortal danger, every day lived is a special occasion worthy of celebrating, and she lives life from one day to the next, barely thinking past tomorrow for it may never come.
She is, all in all, a professional survivor.
Tumblr media
Harwen Lavellan (later on Harwen Montilyet- he (primarily)/they (incidentally), DAI: ~35, DATV: ~45)
Dalish hunter
Archer rogue (Assassin)
❤️: Josephine Montilyet
Non-canon Inquisitor
Summary:
Harwen is a no-nonsense, practical man- a calm and collected, rather quiet person whose every word is spoken with purpose.
Able to think coolly and logically even in the face of danger, Harwen is a born analyst and strategist. He’s prone to seeming emotionally detached in his decision-making and known to prioritize the purpose over the idea- Ultimately, he is a smart worker rather than a hard worker, with a remarkable talent for seeing the big picture without getting swallowed up in the details.
He is very pragmatic and equally introverted; a very private person and while not unfriendly, he is difficult to get to know and even more difficult to predict. Being perceptive and at times suspicious, he may come off as grumpy, coarse. That is, however, merely the surface- as a private person, he is deeply romantic, loyal, and works best as a member of a team. Having been trained as a Dalish hunter, he seems to have a gift for seeing the strengths and weaknesses of each of his companions, and working with- and around them with efficiency.
He is also an eerily fast learner- while as a Dalish elf, he has not had any formal education and is barely literate in human writing systems, he is remarkable at absorbing large amounts of information very quickly and applying it as the situation requires.
Regarding beliefs, Harwen is a traditionally wired mind with a modern twist- while conscious and critical of its flaws, he observes Dalish customs and honors the gods according to his clan’s practices, invoking Falon’din and Andruil before each battle. In this, he does not allow himself to be shaken- while he accepts that his people are not perfect, not by a longshot, he is nevertheless devout. As the story of the game progresses and he is forced to give up elements of his heritage, he only seems to cling tighter to the few parts to which he can.
In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, and he often whistles out of tune.
By Veilguard, he lives in Antiva as Josephine's husband, no longer wears his clan name, and is a father to one half-elven daughter by the name Valeria Montilyet (she looks human, and her father is often mistaken for merely her caretaker).

Sometimes, Tristan Brosca reflected, life was a brutal and terrible thing. Dust Town had taught him that lesson a thousand times over. But sometimes life was the smell of the campfire, a crisp breeze under starlight, and a faithful friend beside him; and that, that, was something fine.

Someone please ask me questions about my Dragon Age Wardens. Here they are
Orion Mahariel: Dalish elf rogue. He's an archer and a ranger. He's trans, gay, and demisexual. He romances Zevran. He's very kind and hates killing sentient creatures, but is an excellent hunter as long as he knows the creature will be honored and used. He has Alistair complete the dark ritual since he can't due to being trans. He cares very deeply for elf rights and Dalish culture. He believes in a second chance for everyone. He has a huge crush on Sten at first and is extremely curious about other cultures and people. He is fascinated by spirits, but terrified of demons. He's always trying his best.
Rose Tabris: My city elf. She's extremely distrustful of humans and of most everyone, really due to the trauma she's been through. She's very guarded and mistrustful, believing that pretty much everyone is out to get her. She's quite harsh and blunt, not taking anyone's bullshit. She isn't afraid of a fight and she doesn't back down. She eventually romances Leliana, but it takes a long time before she trusts her. She's so conflicted over if she should harden Leliana or not. She just wants to protect her. She's a two-handed warrior. She's a cis woman and a lesbian.
Benten Brosca: My commoner dwarf. He's very sweet and jolly, loving everyone. He's kind and eternally optimistic. He laughs very easily and tries to turn most things into a joke. He really tries to always look on the bright side of things. He doesn't do the Dark Ritual with Morrigan, but he romanced her, so his son still exists. He doesn't die, either. Alistair ends up making the sacrifice. He's cis and straight, but an ally. Probably going to be a rogue.
Orla Cousland: My human noble. Can't decide if she should be rogue or warrior. Kind, but fierce. Has a strong sense of duty. She always wants to do the right thing, but often doesn't know what that is. She is Andrastian and supports the Chantry for the most part. She cares deeply and wants to change things. She hates being seen as weak and always wants to take charge of her own destiny. Cis woman and bisexual. Romances Alistair and eventually becomes his queen.
Eluvia Amell: My human circle mage! She's a trans woman and is bisexual and polyamorous. She romances Zevran and Leliana. She's very curious about the outside world, as she's never experienced it before. She is extremely Andrastian, but hates the Chantry. She loves the Maker, but hates the people who speak for Him. She has a similar view to Leliana about it. She becomes a blood mage and spirit healer. She is a bit emotionally stunted due to not experiencing many milestones of growing up while trapped in the Circle.
Primrose Surana: My elven mage. She's a mage, but she actually supports the Circles and the templars. She's kinda similar to that one mage in the Circle whose name I forgot. She believes that magic is a curse and that they have to atone. She's very fond of the Tranquil and spends a lot of her time with them. She hates being a Grey Warden and wants to return to her tower, where it's safe. She's so scared all the time. She's a cis woman and probably bisexual, but repressed. Haven't decided who/if she's gonna romance, but I kinda like her with Alistair and Leliana
Ralsei Auducan: My dwarf noble. Probably gonna be a warrior. Pansexual aromantic trans woman. She's kinda a bitch. Very spoiled. Thinks she's the best at everything. Violence is her first response. Very hot-headed and easily offended. No romance, but sleeps with Gorim and Zevran. Wishes she could be queen of Orzammar, as she believes it's her right.
Tristan Cousland: My other human noble. Probably gonna be a rogue and an archer. He's very pragmatic and wants solutions. She's kinda rude, but it's just because they're very blunt. He hates authority and understands why Loghain did what he did. Spares Loghain. Romances Nathaniel Howe in my mind and possibly Morrigan

How do your Wardens handle the final "pass through the fire" test of the Gauntlet?
The thing about this is that my group of Wardens is split upat this point because it just seems prudent to leave some of them behind atRedcliffe to defend the castle in case any darkspawn show up, or there arestraggler zombies, while another group goes off to find the urn.
But I’m going to include all of them anyway because it’s funand I like thinking about this stuff for all of them!
Aja Amell: Aja normally would be extremely embarrassed abouthaving to disrobe in front of others, and while she still does feel that in asense, her encounter with the spirit form of Jowan has left her feeling guiltand shame that translates to her view of this trial.  Essentially, for Aja, this is just anotherway in which she is forced to lay herself bare (literally, this time) andreveal her worst mistakes to her companions. She carefully looks down at the ground after disrobing, and tries tocover herself up with her arms as much as she can.
Velyn Mahariel: Velyn would go through this trial with themost demonstrative defiance he could muster. He would disrobe easily and efficiently (not having the sameself-consciousness of his own body as a result of the way the Dalish haveraised him) and stare down the Guardian with his chin raised and his eyesnarrowed.  Let this shemlen goddess orprophetess or whatever she is judge him. His shame is his own, his failures for himself and the Creators to know, and she has no place in that.
Gundhram Aeducan: Gundhram is eminently practical about thewhole thing.  Similarly to Velyn, he doesnot have a sense of shame when it comes to his body because his culture doesdiffer from the humans, and when one has been on expeditions in the Deep Roadsfor days at a time, one’s modesty tends to take a hit.  Gundhram is of the mind that if it gets themout of the Gauntlet, it’s worth it to try. Besides, there have been far worse things he’s endured than undressingbefore comrades.
Tristan Brosca: Tristan is actually very similar to Gundhramon this issue.  He has no concern forshowing his body to his companions because there is very little in the way ofbeing shamed that he has not experienced, as a casteless dwarf.  He’s learned to care nothing for the thoughtsof others, and it serves him well in situations like this.  Besides, he just wants to get the hell out ofthat weird place, where the lyrium feels wrong and off, and spirits try to tellhim his deepest regrets.
Ila Tabris: Having lived among a bastardized version of bothhuman and elven culture, Ila’s response would be informed by an odd mix of thetwo, and though she would feel uncomfortable with disrobing so easily in frontof companions who she does not deem close enough to see her in such an intimateway, she bites back that discomfort, knowing that this is the only way to passthe final trial of the Gauntlet. Secretly, she also is curious what Andraste would see in her as she is,with no layers to hide behind
Gazza Cousland: Gazza would be very uncomfortable with this, and her discomfort stems entirely from the condition she has which prevents thegrowth of hair anywhere on her body.  Shewas teased for that as a child, when she had no hair on her head and noeyebrows, and she’s been self-conscious of it ever since.  She also bears a brand on her shoulder, leftbehind from when a crazed chantry sister thought she was possessed and tried toburn the demon out of her.  Gazza is veryafraid of revealing either of these things to her companions, and though shetries to hold herself proudly, she can’t meet anyone else’s eyes and can’tquite stop her hands from shaking as they await the final judgment.

And finally some dwarves!!  Here are all of my dwarf Wardens.  From left to right:  Leofalda Kader, Gundhram Aeducan, and Tristan Brosca.
Leofalda Kader - My canon Kader Warden who accompanies my Caron and Andras OCs to Amaranthine after the Fifth Blight is defeated.  She is skilled with dual-wielding multiple kinds of weapons, and has picked up some bardic skills from her time in Val Royeaux in particular, though she isn’t a bard herself.  Born in Orzammar Leofalda left for the Surface when she was still a young child, sneaking out with the help of a group of dwarven scholars who were studying the Deep Roads.  At Gherlen’s Pass, instead of going east to Ferelden, she chose instead to go west to Orlais, and very quickly managed to build up the necessary survival skills to keep herself alive, including learning the Orlesian language and perfectly mimicking a native Orlesian accent.  She chose the tattoo on her forehead both in defiance of her brand, and to take advantage of Orlesian nobles’ tendency to underestimate those things which they see as “foreign,” including dwarves.  She joined the Wardens shortly before the start of the Fifth Blight, welcomed for her skills in stealth, striking from the shadows, and resourcefulness.  She claims that the reason she never became a fully-fledged bard is because her singing voice is too horrible to make the cut, but no one has ever actually heard her sing.
Gundhram Aeducan - My canon Aeducan who ends up exiled in the Deep Roads, where Duncan and his Wardens find and recruit him.  Gundhram is a skilled commander and tactician, and is very skilled with two-handed large weapons (particularly axes).  Born in Orzammar, the second son of King Endrin and his favored consort, Herja, Gundhram has always known a life of privilege and luxury.  He hasn’t thought his brothers were so suspicious of him or each other, however, and wasn’t able to predict Trian hiring mercenaries to kill him, or Bhelen killing Trian and then framing him for it.  Devastated by this turn of events, and the loss of his family and the life he had known, Gundhram willingly joined the Wardens.  The version of him above is before he was exiled, as Orzammar tradition states that when a casted dwarf is exiled, they lose their braids and have their hair and beard shaved/cut.  Unflappable on the battlefield, and experienced with leading soldiers and warriors, Gundhram steps up after Duncan’s death as the de facto leader of the Wardens.
Tristan Brosca - My canon Brosca who joins the Wardens willingly to escape life in Dust Town.  Tristan’s weapon of choice is his bow, which is unusual for lowly Carta thugs to have, as crossbows are much easier to wield and much cheaper to buy in bulk.  But Tristan received this bow from his mother as a young pre-teen, and has kept it with him because it’s the only thing of his absent father that he has.  While skilled with a bow, Tristan can also turn virtually anything into a weapon if he has to.  Tristan is only really close to his sister, Rica, and close friend, Leske, and does not extend his trust to anyone else.  Having worked for Beraht since he was just out of childhood - and having been looked down on and left at the lower end of the Carta totem pole - Tristan has learned that words are cheap, and actions, while more expensive, are just as easy to turn around on someone.  Tristan’s main goal is to get his family and himself out of Dust Town, and for that reason, he jumps on the opportunity to join the Wardens (once he receives encouragement from both Leske and Rica, though).  The braids Tristan wears in his beard were given to him by his sister, who made up her own version of family braids for the Brosca family to share.
And there are the dwarves!  I absolutely have more dwarf OCs to get to, but for now, I’m sticking with the “in-game protagonist” theme.  Leofalda’s dwarf scholar helpers are most likely going to get some faces at some point, and I would love to sketch them out when that happens.

you have given me mage!cousland brainrot..
if you were to have tristan be a mage in the multiwarden universe, how do you think it would change his relationships with the other wardens?
a lot!
non-mage cousland in their classic form is kind of the Default Andrastian Hero of the party who provides a lot of the standard viewpoints that maybe aren’t obvious to the rest, who are all in their own ways experience human fereldan society as an outsider. (for that reason i would still lean towards using non-mage cousland in a multiwarden worldstate, because i think that’s kind of the point if cousland in a multiwarden worldstate, providing the normal from which to compare everyone else.) being accused of being a traitor is the first time non-mage cousland hasn’t had the unquestioned freedom to go where they will
mage cousland is a very different creature just by virtue of having magic. with tristan, sure, he’s more privileged than a lot of the other wardens, but hes still now also an outsider. he’s been kept at home and not allowed to engage with the rest of ferelden in order to keep his magic hidden, and he’s very used to the idea that if people knew what he was, he’d be hunted. his very unsanctioned presence is illegal. while he’s still andrastian (although i have fucked up his andrastianism a bit as a treat), his approach to standard fereldan andrastian moral answers is always going to be affected by knowing what the standard andrastian answer would be to his own existence
obviously his relationship with surana would change the most with this in common... i think he’d be interested in and more open to mahariel bc of dalish mages and she in turn might be baffled by the humans’ treatment of a mage heir when she has always answered to a mage and her people value mage children so highly. aeducan might be more interested in him, she kind of dismisses him bc he’s fairly quiet and stoic and doesn’t push his opinions, but she has a particular esteem for the abilities of mages, having always felt the surface’s imagination was limited and orzammar could use them better. i think tabris and brosca would still see him as a noble first and foremost though and not really care that he has magic and oh woe is him he had to stay at home sometimes. tabris in particular, with the alienage having been robbed of children like surana, might be almost insulted families like the couslands have the capacity to hide their mages

SO since Veilguard is set in roughly 9:52 Dragon...
my Warden Aren Aeducan (born 9:4, was 26 during her main story) is 48 now- been a Warden for 22 years, which is a touch concerning- Wardens seldom live that long.
Ray Trevelyan (born 9:17, was 24 during his main story) is 35 now.
Verbena, I'm thinking is 32 (born 9:20, year of Celene's ascension to the throne of Orlais)- an established adult and experienced enough to be recognized by Varric for the work she does, but still pretty young and inexperienced with the "world ending" type of shit.
Coris would be around 35, but if asked her age, she'd likely just laugh and give wildly different answers each time- no documentation beyond her word even exists, after all, you can't be an efficient assassin if you leave a paper trail.
Tristan would have died in 9:30, at Ostagar- I'm thinking he was around 17 then (born 9:13, maybe 9:12 to stretch it, like he turned 17 maybe a month before then), a Fereldan farm boy rallied to come defend his king and his home. By the time Veilguard rolls around, he'll have been "dead" and a Grey Warden for 22 years, which would make him roughly 40... but I do wonder how I'd want the undeath to affect his aging, if at all.
Like I could see the guy looking uncanny youthful still, because spirit magic, OR kinda haggard and older than his actual years, because not even spirit magic can undo a lifetime of never having even heard of moisturizer. and also being technically dead.
[my non-canon Inquisitors, Adela and Harwen, are 50 and 41 respectively (also romancing Bull and Josie respectively), and my non-canon Warden, Vogar Brosca (for Zevran), is 46. man, aging them all up a decade is gonna take some adjusting, lol.]
[aaaand my Hawke is dead. so. that's that.]

i have a million things i should be doing right now, yet here i am, falling down a rabbithole of traditional sailors'- and legionnaires' tattoos for two side-characters who don't have faces yet (who i plan to play far after finishing my first run as a completely unrelated character), for a game that isn't coming out for another two months
........ anyway, Tanner, my Lord of Fortune dwarfette, is going to have basically been a treasure-hunter at sea (so kind of a pirate, but I'm gathering visual inspiration more from Vikings), and she's gonna have what the qunari she served with called "gaatlok-spots", based not-so-loosely on the gunpowder spots of 17th century buccaneers. which are basically stick and poke tattoos made by rubbing finely crushed gunpowder into needle-marks made on the skin. (maybe a swallow in a style reminiscent of the American traditional style of sailor tattoos to signify distance she's traveled, or just something I can get in the cc that makes her extra hot, just on her biceps, because I can.) (I want her tall for a dwarf, strong as hell, and generally to sweep Harding off her feet.)
Tristan, I'll have to see the cc's options, because there aren't really many constraints there (i'm picturing this sort of thing so far, kinda more warden'd up, but his might be a mishmash), i just know i want to poke many holes into that guy- not necessarily his face for the sake of Warden respectability, but... there are many more places to pierce and draw on, especially considering that I want him to be Large in general
(am i also going to retcon in my Brosca having similar types of stick and poke tattoos beyond his casteless brand? you betcha)

out of the wardens you have, which ones would kill the prisoner at ostagar? I've only done it once in the name of branching out. taking the big boy steps towards non identical playthroughs. might lie to the dead werewolf's husband next
i honestly can’t think of any of them JGSSJJSSK i don’t think i have anyone who goes as hard as just killing some guy for no reason. i don’t really do characters who do things like that needlessly and i can’t think of anyone who would take a deserter that personally... it’s so weird how many options there are with the prisoner lmao. i didn’t even realise he had a key until i saw it on the keep 💀
ursa aeducan maybe?? but it seems a bit much. girl u have a redemption arc scheduled u have to get it together. she’d think it was beneath her anyway. it wouldn’t occur to tristan cousland to go near him, bless him, and he’d ignore anything a deserter had to say anyway. rhyseris tabris would sympathise completely. winter brosca would just steal his key; tough luck salroka shouldn’t have shown ur hand! i always have minerva surana persuade the guard bc that’s her skillset but now i’m wondering if she wouldn’t avoid stealing from the circle out of guilt and fair caution after her last attempt at sneaking went so phenomenally badly... maybe she’d only go take the stuff after the joining when feeling bitter abt everything. ghilis mahariel i can’t imagine chatting to random shem prisoners but she might have principles abt sharing food if he got her attention while she was trying to ignore the chantry sisters. i struggle to imagine her stealing or passing a persuasion check; i wish there was an intimidation check on the guard lmao that would be her go-to. but nah no prisoner killers in my current set! bunch of goody two shoes the lot of them

Heyo!  Currently, I’ve been working on a multi-Warden multi-chapter novelization of Dragon Age: Origins.  The whole of the narrative will take place over the course of several fics, all a part of the same series on ao3.  The series is called To Answer the Call, and the first work is called Wardens at Ostagar, which introduces my DAO Wardens and protagonists.  For a quick visual reference, I’m including this post in the author’s note section of the fic at the beginning of the first chapter, just so that any readers have an idea of what these characters look like.
Top row, left to right:
Ilhenan (Ila) Tabris
Gundhram Aeducan
Gazza Cousland (not a Warden, but an important figure in the story)
Bottom row, left to right:
Aja Amell
Tristan Brosca
Velyn Mahariel
Here is a link to the series: To Answer the Call
Here is a link to the first fic: Wardens at Ostagar
