Tripod Open Species Masterpost Tumblr Ver. AKA I made another Open species!

This time they're based on something from my favorite Science Fiction book The War Of The Worlds, the Tripods!

Tripod naming convention:

There are three different ways to name a Tripod, these are naming it after an aspect of their nature like Trill or Mosquito, naming them after the shape of their "hood" like Brodie, Adrian, Jolly & Pickel. & lastly naming them based on the shape of their main body like Bulb, Henry & Dud.

Tripod biology:

Tripods are an Arthropod-like species denoted by their exoskeletons being of an unknown high-entropy chitin metal composite.

They seem to incorporate a form of reverse biomimicry, where instead of a machine attempting to emulate a living organism it is an organism attempting to emulate a mechanical or inorganic structure, said structure they seem to most often emulate being water towers.

Most Tripods seem to have something known as Gathering spawn, small squat pentapidal miniature versions of the Tripod. It is unknown if Gathering spawn are Tripod offspring or some other species that formed a symbiotic relationship with the Tripods, as no Tripod offspring have ever been observed.

Tripod origins:

The origins of the Tripods are unknown, they first appeared around the world almost all at once in 2002, however through samples of dead Tripods & recovered bits of exoskeletal sheddings shows that most Tripods were born between 1979-2002.

There are three current theories on the origins of the Tripods

#1. They are a man-made species created by unknown means.

#2. They Naturally evolved this way & only recently been discovered.

#3. They are not native to Earth & are extraterrestrials.

Tripod intelligence:

Tripods seem to have an intelligence on par with humans, while in groups they tend to communicate to one another via their own language but are capable of learning human languages.

Tripod relations with Humans:

While Tripods seem to have a neutral opinion on humans they can often form emotional bonds with them, often seeing them as friends or companions.

Misc info:

Tripods height wise are on average between 10 feet tall to 45 feet tall, though some mutations can cause a Tripod to be hundreds of feet tall.

Despite their organic nature Tripods are able to emit concentrated infrared light via an organ located in their left hand.

Tripods have spiracles (nostrils) located typically underneath their "hoods".
