'Dek kvar' is Esperanto for which number?
'Dek kvar' is Esperanto for the number 14.
The numbers zero to ten have specific words: nul (0), unu (1), du (2), tri (3), kvar (4), kvin (5), ses (6), sep (7), ok (8), naŭ (9), and dek (10). The numbers 10 to 19 are formed by adding the word 'dek' before each number, for example, dek unu (11), dek du (12), dek tri (13) and dek kvar (14).
Numbers in the tens (20, 30, 40 etc) are formed by adding the word 'dek' after the matching digit: dek (10), dudek (20), tridek (30), kvardek (40) and so forth. The other two digit numbers are formed by saying the ten first, followed by the digit separated with a space, for instance, dudek kvin (25), kvardek ses (46).
The hundreds are built exactly the same way as the tens. 100 is written 'cent', so the following are ducent (200), tricent (300), kvarcent (400), and so forth. Similarly, the thousands are mil (1,000), dumil (2,000), trimil (3,000) etc.
Esperanto is a language that was constructed by the Polish eye doctor L. L. Zamenhof (1859-1917) in 1887. He intended for the language to make international communication easier and designed it in such a way that people could learn it much more easily than any other national language. As of 2022, there are around 2 million fluent speakers but only one thousand speakers use it as their primary language. Esperanto is based on European languages, such as French, German, Polish and Russian, and is written with a modified version of the Latin alphabet.
