Welcome to Ask Spring Vash, an ask blog specifically for the iteration of Vash from our fancomic, Trigun: The Desert Spring, a.k.a. Spring Vash!

Co-written by @lavvythejackalope and @hyperfi, The Desert Spring and this version of Vash exist in their own timeline, independent of any particular canon iteration, being kind of a mishmash of all of them.

Spring Vash is more than happy to answer any questions you might have about differences in the timeline, things about the world, or even things that happen in the comic. Some time in the future he may reblog comic pages with his own commentary on the situation as well, we will just have to see how he feels!

For years I haven’t been able to participate much because I barely read any fics anymore, but Trigun has definitely changed that, so here it is! A rec list of every fic I’ve enjoyed so far! I have terrible memory and not enough brain power to leave a note about each one, but I put a ♡ next to every fic I particularly loved! Well, that explains a lot.  Why Trigun Stampede was Sci fi over Western.

I was toodling on Youtube (as one oft does in these current times) and stumbled upon this excerpt from a Trash Taste podcast where they interviewed a staff member from Studio Orange about Trigun Stampede.  Pretty much this expands upon some of what I’d briefly read from a Sakuracon panel this spring.

TL:DR - Trigun Stampede was a complete remake of the original Trigun with a hired sci fi writer to not only write 150 years of history and lore but also mechanics of the world.  This is why most of the elements of the original are lost.  The manga and ‘98 anime were an example of an American style Western plopped on a desert planet but one where the materials and mechanics of the world are similar to our own.

This both supports what had been my general take away from the final product as well as explains things I observed but had no evidence for without hearing it from a staff member.

1.) Sci fi elements were a huge deal -  hiring an independent writer explains why it has such a different voice and storytelling tone.  One could argue that the original Trigun made it too easy to recognize it was a western, but that was what we were given as readers and viewers.  As much as I, an anal retentive person who like details like thinking that there is no wood on the planet, therefore, we can’t have wood saloon doors.  I also like a story that makes sense and flows.

2.) The twelve episode format boxed them in.  Who knows how these sort of deals are made but they needed at least 24 episodes from the start.  This is what killed the pacing.  You can redo all you want but if the pacing and writing are bad, it will be bad.  I feel like I’m the niche version of someone like Friendly Space Ninja and Amanda the Jedi.  Just because you put a lot of time, money and effort (also money) it won’t matter if your writing is bad. 3.) I fully agree that the CGI was exceptional.  It is obvious that the studio put so much effort into this front.  The animation was breathtakingly well done for the most part.  There were a few too many ‘show off’ animation sequences which annoyed me but the facial expressions were great.

However, due to the shift with the sci fi aspect being much greater than the Western, we get the loss of the ability to animate more of the common people who are largely absent and a key aspect of Nightow’s works.  I’ve stated this elsewhere but the adults in his series are trying to protect the common folk.  By leaning into the desert aspect and the desolation of the desert stereotype, they lacked the random kids, bakers, bankers, laborers, servers, farmers, mothers, fathers etc.  I’m not sure if this is a technical issue from the computational/technical side or a storyboarding/framing issue.  Or that they just forgot about the people in general were a thing?

This also heavily leans into the incorrect assumption that a desert is desolate and does not support life.  Anyone who has visited or lived in the desert knows that despite appearing like it is dead and empty at first, plenty of life is present.  It just has a totally different way to adapt to things.  I was disappointed that the creative team leaned into this stereotype using green plants [photosynthesis] = livable and desert using angelic being plants = livable.  My own experience of living in the desert also made me cringe at Wolfwood’s shoes.  No.  Just no.  You do not wear slip on shoes in the desert.  Lace ups for sure and up past your ankle even better.

4.) Ample amount of creative effort went into this.  Again, Studio Orange put a lot of effort into this.   Technically, it is very nice.  If you wanted to look at it from an anime perspective, the presentation was excellent, and the writing was at most average.  But, with so much source material that they did not include and the creation of so much of their own original ideas and concepts, it took it far from the work.   If they wanted this as their product (which seems to have been their goal) then they succeeded.  However, if they wanted to take the original and build on it and give it a fresh coat of paint with 2020s Pantone Colors of the moment, they did not do that.

5.) I’m surprised at how many YT critics are impressed and overall giving this positive reviews.  I know that people in these positions have made it their job to do anime/manga media commentary and critiques so they may want to be less harsh perhaps.  Many of them saw the original material, and so many seem to be okay with it.  Yet, is anyone not commenting on what happened to all the female characters?  No!  This annoys me so much but repeating myself here won’t really do much other than reinforce the fact that I was very unhappy with Meryl, Elendira, Luida, and Rem.  Lazy writing would be with the limited time space for the episodes they became tropes and shadows of their former selves.  But Meryl was a key character and deserved better. Yes, I love to critique things I love and that is fair but I’m wishing for a more comprehensive critique of Trigun Stampede taken from not a bunch of dudes on the internet.  I have neither the time nor effort to become a Youtube creator and commentator in this space.  With that whole full time job sort of thing that pays quite well.  But I do want to see more women in this space expressing how they interact with media and walk us through their reactions an feelings towards it.  For example someone the The Anime Tea. I absolutely love her analyses!

I honestly would love to see her do a review of Trigun Stampede!  But it might be outside of her general scope and I’m not here to demand an analysis from anyone.  She had a lot of nuanced and contextually appropriate reviews and ways to approaching things which is just - sooo good.

Trigun Stampede Spoilers

As we get to the final episode of the season, those familiar with the basic story beats of Trigun know there's a decent chance we could end this arc on a bit of a downer note. But Orange won't do that; no, they can't do that. Not if they want to stay true to the themes of the story.

Vash is the ever-blooming flower in the desert, the light in the darkest of storms, hope springing eternal even in the face of the most monstrous situations. To end the series on a note that lacks even the tiniest of flickers of that light would be to do a disservice to all that Vash is.

But in spite of all the horror that happened in Episode 11, I think Orange will pull through. Why? Because they've demonstrated multiple times that they're keenly aware of this aspect of Vash's character, and have gone out out of their way to express that.

I'm just gonna go over three places where they've shown that below, though I believe there are more to be found:

The Opening Song - Kvi Baba by Tombi I could go over the entirety of the lyrics, but I'll just focus on the bridge and chorus. 失いたくない I don't wanna lose これ以上の愛 Any more love 失いたくない I don't wanna lose これ以上の愛 Any more love 今⽇と明⽇の境なら未だ無 The border between today and tomorrow is still missing 眠れずに⾒る悪夢は終わらない Sleepless nightmares never end それでも僕は希望を忘れない But I never forget my hope それでも明けぬ夜ならここにない Through every dark night there's a bright day, even here This might as well just be Vash's theme song. I mean, this is the guy who's all about Love and Peace, who's body is a scarred-up mess because he's constantly putting himself in danger to help people. He's lost so much and hurt so much and been through so much, but even through the worst of it, he can't help but keep striving toward his goal. (Brief spoilers for '98 in the next paragraph. If you want to avoid them, skip to #2.) Those who have watched '98 (and I think maybe Maximum fans? IDK, I don't remember much of Maximum...) might remember the Ericks arc. Even then, when he's supposed to be in hiding and not being Vash the Stampede, boy can't stop himself from interfering (sometimes at great risk to himself) when he sees others in danger. He's always gotta help, and he's always gotta keep trying to pull everyone he can find toward that hope that he strives for.

The Soundtrack Itself The soundtrack, as it should, goes through a lot of different moods, but despite the foreboding and anxiety in the penultimate track (titled Millions Knives), the final track (titled Trigun Stampede) is light and hopeful. It also has lyrics. I couldn't find an official source for them, but it seems to include the following lines: Call me Vash the Stampede Live in Love and Peace Maybe a musician for an opening or closing song is gonna miss a few story points if they're not paying attention, but it seems unlikely they'd casually overlook this element in their soundtrack. Not when they've put so much work into capturing a reasonable facsimile of Vash. Additionally, a well-designed soundtrack should reflect the story it's trying to tell... and while I might be stretching a bit on this one, I'd like to think Stampede's soundtrack is well done. So it begs the question, why end the soundtrack that way if you're not going to have the story circle back to that light?

The Plant Manifestation at the End of Episode 11 I actually missed this one at first, so I'm glad other people noticed and pointed it out. After everything that happened in Ep 11, after Knives went after every memory and every moment of value to Vash and removed them with surgical precision, apparently he still can't entirely remove Vash's memory of Rem, because she's the figure blooming over July. Not Vash. Not Nai. Not another more plant-ish being. Rem, the surrogate mother who meant everything to Vash, whose brief existence continues to spur him forward to hope in the face of hopelessness. Knives tried to take everything away from Vash, to leave him as nothing but a husk, but some aspect of Rem still remains.

But I find myself wondering if Vash will be in any condition to keep holding that light at the season's end. I wonder if, instead of giving it back to Vash right away, Orange will instead give it to Meryl, and she'll hold onto it until Vash comes back to himself. Seems like she's holding a lot right now, but she seems both willing and able. Meryl's always been a bit of a fighter in her own way, and I could see her with all her determination declaring that no, this is not the end, that she will keep moving forward toward the ideal Vash chased, and she'll drag him along until he can walk the path on his own again, and then they'll both walk it together.

Hopefully, Wolfwood will be there, too. And who knows? Maybe they'll pick up another friend along the way....

Hello Bryn so I started following you for your Trigun art (love love love ‘em) but your spring rolls pic just gave me so much personal and Trigun feels… sorry I’m about to ramble.

So my good friend is Viet and we lived together during Covid lockdown. We made and ate SO MUCH Viet food. It really is a whole event. A participatory art. I live alone now and I miss eating as a communal ritual.

Which reminds me of that Stampede scene where Vash finally started eating again “I deserve to eat, right?” They were eating together too—all of them, including the three random dudes that were on the sideline. There’s just something so natural and comforting about sharing meals; it’s making me kind of sad because Vash often had to eat alone (ex. when he first came to ship 3 and when he roamed around the desert). Vash was hungry for a family/community and now I can see that being one of the points of episode 4.

i feel the same way 😭😭 sharing food isn’t just about food, it’s healing. to be welcomed in, to be looked after, to participate together in the creation and consumption of what makes us so human

my roommate of four years was viet (i can’t even call her a roommate, we were so much more than that, she’s family) and she helped teach me how to cook and for us food wasn’t just what we ate, it was what we did. it was how we loved.

i’ve never seen someone eat so much in my life, countless shared meals, whether it was just the two of us or we were cooking for thirty other people, howl’s-moving-castle-breakfasts on weekends, hurried dinner leftovers scarfed down in the car while i drove the 55, hours-long hot pot feasts until we’re sweating and stuffed, wicked cold ice cream eaten on the curb downtown as midnight approaches, entire rainy mondays spent making phở, sandwiches with too much maggi seasoning packed in paper bags for hikes, inviting the boys over to gorge on wafer-thin bánh xèo, she’d chop tomatoes for my bruschetta because the smell of them made me sick and i would juice lemons for her when her hands were chapped and bleeding. and i’ve never had an easy relationship with food but something about lyss made eating feel so simple and right.

since she moved away and i eventually moved too i don’t have that same community anymore and i’ve struggled to eat well since losing it. i didn’t know what i had until it was gone. she never forced me to eat or chided me for not eating, she would just make really good food and share it with me. and i would eat it. i could eat it. eating was easier when she was around. so making dinner tonight was like a ritual, putting on the apron she gave me and making spring rolls for the first time in months and accidentally pouring out too much fish sauce just like she would do; and even though i don’t get to share spring rolls with her anymore, the time and the food that we shared together has changed me. and it’s okay. it’s easier to let myself eat and laugh when i can be the one to provide a meal for the people that i am with now, even if they’re not the people who make it easy, so for now i will do just that and maybe someday again i will be able to cook and eat with someone who makes it unburdensome.

From my current Brokeback fic, To Tell the Truth:

Once they'd got their things set in the little not-even-a-dot-on-the-map campsite in the wooded hills an hour or so up into Montana—deserted this time of year, not that it was ever busy—a bout of roughhousing over the firewood turned quickly into a roll in the proverbial hay. They wound up bundled together under their blankets in the reliable shelter of their tent, Ennis laying curled on Jack's bare chest, eyes closed. Jack scritched his fingers through Ennis's curls. “Y'know,” he murmured slowly, “you got a playful streak you damn near only let come out when there ain't nobody else around. Wish I got a see it more.” Ennis hummed a non-answer, turned his face to press the line of his mouth to Jack's skin.

And from the not-yet posted Trigun fic I'm working on:

The bathroom door opened a crack just as Meryl tipped a dustpan full of sand into the rubbish bin, burying the mangled springs and broken screws. “Hey, Meryl…?” Vash's voice came through the crack. “Hm?” She turned. “Yeah?” “I, uh, kinda forgot to grab myself clean clothes,” he admitted with a hint of self-depreciating laughter. “Can you toss me some?” “Oh, yeah, sure.” She set the dustpan aside with the broom and reached for his bag. “Anything in particular, or…?” On the other side of the door, Vash shrugged, forehead pressed to the frame. “Just whatever falls to hand first.  MOVEMENT-animation

Inspiration board for my animation. I'm looking at a lot of warm colour palettes, dusty desert environments with big rock formations and long highway roads. Looney Tunes' "Roadrunner" is a big inspiration for the style of story and animation style. I really like the environments and backgrounds of Asteroid City, Trigun Stampede's ending cards, and Cowboy Bebop, particularly the contrast between the warm blues and reds/oranges. I've also looked at the landscape of Radiator Springs from the Pixar movie "Cars" and some episodes from Adventure time.

For the character design I looked at some photos of hawks midflight, and for the cat I looked some Trigun and Adventure Time expressions, and at 2 animations: "Soft Fuzzy Man" by aimkid, and "FELLINLOVEWITHAGIRLLLL" by DeadlyComics.
