This is old news but have a picture of Eva Green trying the local delicacy of Thessaloniki (Trígona Panorámatos) while filming a movie there last winter XD

My mothers just sent me a package of Trigona panoramatos with a card that says 'For the weird little hyena you talked about.'
I don't know whether to be concerned they remembered or happy that they listen to me.

Thessaloniki is packed with sooo many food places you loose track of them. In each corner there's a place to eat traditional Greek food, great sweets, from other countries and more.
Recently Agora Modiano opened up after years and it's a ride of food.
Not to mention the famous ones specifically made in Thessaloniki such as
Sweet Pastry
Trigona panoramatos
Rice Dish
Gamopilafo
Meat Dish
Sweet Pastry
Bougatsa
Okay it's also Gyros but it's everywhere especially Athens so doesn't technically count xd

3rd and last day in Thessaloniki... Long day again but worth the distance walked! I had traditionally in sand brewed coffee at @kafodeion, trigona panoramatos from @elenidis, visited the zongopoulos umbrellas, the Alexander the Great statue, went inside the Rotunda and ate Savviko souvlakis which was amazing and had a chill prosecco with my new friend @queeen_nea! What would you visit in Thessaloniki when you're here? . . . . . #2412life #travelpics #travelphotography #travelblogger #travelblog #wanderlust #globetrotter #natgeo #natgeotravel #cntravel #traveltheworld #lovetravel #passionpassport #paradise #igtravel #bestvacations #bbctravel #doyoutravel #worldplaces #wonderful_places #roamtheplanet #traveladdict #nomad #globalnomads #travels #worldcaptures #worldtraveler (bij Saloniki) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4IbIn_nymK/?igshid=j4m7jh0pd3jh

Elenidis’in diğer şubesi sahilde, Beyaz Kule’nin yaklaşık 100 metre ilerisindeki Stratigou Kallari Caddesi’nde (http://bigchefcook.blogspot.com.tr)". 📍#ig_thessaloniki_ #selanik #yırtık_harita #aniyakalafk #dunyakacbucak #CNTradar #everydayeverywhere #igersistanbul #oneistanbul #hayatakarken #allshotsturkey #cokgezenlerkulubu #turkishfollowers #everydayturkey #fotografdukkani #objektifimden #benimkadrajim #tagforlikes #photooftheday #instalike #webstagram #picoftheday #like4likes #vsco #hurriyetseyahat #travelgram #bestoftheday (Thessaloníki, Greece)

My mum's friend went to Lemnos recently and she brought us back these! They're so good! A bit rich, but very comforting. They remind me of koufeta (I hope that's right? I mean the sugared almonds they give in bonboniere at weddings). Mum looked on their website and they have so many tasty looking sweets😍 It got me wondering if you have any recommendations for other sweet shops around Greece? I don't think it's the first thing people think of when they go to visit, and it's such a shame.
Tumblr media
I never had one of these! It's absolutely worth it to mention that what you had is called Venizelikó and it was named as such because it was the treat they gave to Venizelos when he visited during the Independence of the islands!
As for pastry shops, we have a sweet tooth and there are pastry shops everywhere and each place has its own several ones and sometimes you may find quality in an obscure one nobody knows about and a famous one might underwhelm you so I don't know how to approach this question. It's also that few are chains here in Greece, even if you really liked a pastry shop, it was 80 % a local shop only the locals are aware of. Like, some of my favourite chocolate pastries are from my grandparents' village, a non-touristic town of 1500+ people!
I will tell you the most well known pastry shops of the city where I lived for a while though, Thessaloniki.
Terkenlis is famous for its tsourekia and especially the ones with the chestnut praline filling. The shop is also famous for its baking goods smell which spreads throughout the Aristotle's square. It is so potent that there is this urban legend that they throw baking fragrance oil (or whatever it's called) in the sewers under the shop XD
Tumblr media
Agapitos is also very famous, especially for making various types of chocolate bars and pastries.
Tumblr media
Miltos is another well known one.
Tumblr media
Elenidis is a pastry shop that specializes in Trigona Panoramatos, the local sweets of Thessaloniki.
Tumblr media
Blé Taste Gallery is cool with its variety.
Tumblr media
Choureal has the best choux and profiteroles in Greece, they say.
Tumblr media
There is also Konstantinidis but this one is not a Thessaloniki original, it's from Larisa. The Thessaloniki shop is cool, they have a piano in there lol
Anyway, this turned to a Thessaloniki guide. But followers can add good pastry shops they know or from where they live!

Cool old retro places in Thessaloniki, Greece
Two anons asked for this post after the one about Athens, so here it is! I hope you’ll like it as much.
(Btw I don’t know if it’s because Thessaloniki is like the “food capital” but this ended up being basically a food post.)
Tumblr media
Zythos - Dore, Greek-Mediterranean cuisine, since 1995. It might not sound very old but the restaurant is the continuation of the legendary Cafe “Dore” which was in this building since 1933, while the business ran in a different street already in 1908. It has been visited numerous times throughout the years by kings, princes, important politicians and artists. This is a photo of Stelios Mainas, an acclaimed Greek actor, while eating there.
Tumblr media
The underground bar Berlin, since 1979.
Tumblr media
Diagonios grill restaurant, since 1977. Famous for its Gyros and Soutzoukakia. I recommend.
Tumblr media
Παλιά Αθήνα (transl. Paliá Athína = Old Athens) tavern, since 1960. Famous for the Retsina of its own production (Greek white resinated wine) but also for an extensive list of wines from all over the world.
Tumblr media
Tsarouhas comfort food restaurant, since 1952.
Tumblr media
Terkenlis pastry shop, since 1948. One of the best and certainly the most successful pastry shop of Thessaloniki. If you want my input, the first thing you need to do in Thessaloniki is to go to the oldest of his shops in Aristotle Square and buy a chestnut cream tsoureki.
Tumblr media
Pire ke Vradiazi tavern with live rebetiko music, since 1944.
Tumblr media
Aghapitos pastry shop, since 1944. Famous all around Greece for its traditional Thessalonian Trigona Panoramatos sweets. (Yes in the photo there are heels made of chocolate.)
Tumblr media
Ηρακλής (Hercules) nut shop, since 1939.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Efstratiades’ market, since 1932.
Tumblr media
Snack Grill Express, since 1926. Old school grill restaurant famous for its meat patty filled with gyros, cheese and mushrooms!
Tumblr media
“Tsinari” Cafe - Ouzo Restaurant, since 1885. It was originally a coffee shop belonging to a Turk. After the destruction of Smyrna in 1922 and the population exchange between Greece and Turkey that followed, the shop was passed on to Greek refugees from Minor Asia who turned it into an Ouzo restaurant serving their own delicacies and appetizers. The design and look of the shop has not changed much since 1885. It notably never needed very invasive rennovations / repairs despite its old age.
