here’s my first ever finished cross stitch! the lovely melelani nui, trichadon bard and everybody’s best friend, played by @ghostfiish!

my players have finally met all the NPCs for the campaign I wrote so it’s safe to put these on tumblr.  I’ll put a very very brief desc of the characters under a readmore bc I had a lot of fun making them all!!

I’ve done doodles of Melelani in fancy outfits before in my sketchbooks, but I’ve done an embarrassingly little amount of digital art of her so here is what she wore to a fancy Faerie Ball campaign that @flipwizardmcgay DM’d for us

Oh yeah,,, I posted these on twitter but didn't put them on here, lol whoops!!! The elf is called Cicero (she/her), and the fishperson is my DnD character Mele (she/her). The former is just a design I doodled, loosely based on a design of mine from the past. More on the latter, who I've chosen to be a Bard (whose lute is called "Lutefisk"), once we get our campaign all started up ;u;

She’s based on a whale shark but has traits of both whale and shark because fantasy why not

Her hair is fins but they’re not prehensile or anything. They do grow for as long as she’s alive though, hence the necessity for a braid or it’d get everywhere. The clasp at the bottom is charmed to keep her hair from growing further

Her race is a homebrew one called Trichadon, but past the stats/gameplay functionality and the fact that they’re generally a nonviolent race, there wasn’t a whole lot to go on, so I pretty much came up with my own ideas for trichan culture/biology/etc lol

Melelani is a Bard, and knows how to play Lutes, Drums, Flutes, and Harps. I tried to go with stuff I figured she could play with those large fin-fingers (and a general lack of lips), but I couldn’t pass up woodwinds so we’ll just handwave fantasy magic for that one. Also her flute is mildly cursed petrified tentacle, so that probably helps

She’s supposed to be flirty to go with her 20 Charisma, but when i, a huge aroace that doesn’t know how to flirt, try to roleplay her, she instead ends up being more the perpetually-lovestruck type lol

She’s very similar to me partially because im not a huge roleplayer - Melelani is my first real foray into that and consequently i pretty much just let her have a similar personality to my own irl, but with a funny eeyore voice. i think i’m getting better at it though! i try to have her be different in the types of decisions she makes to compensate for that - for example she’s FAR more outgoing than I would be when talking to NPCs and other PCs haha

Melelani has the ability to retain her sense of self while being possessed, thanks to dm @beccadrawsstuff. She still can’t control her actions, but she can make peanut gallery comments about them and what else is going on around her

She’s a frequent victim of possession among the party thanks to her low-ish Wisdom score, and during one occasion, gained the ability to moonwalk (the dance move)

Her teeth, except for the bottom two fangs I draw her with, can retract like Toothless’ teeth. This serves no purpose except for that I think it’s cool. Maybe it makes it easier to swallow fish?...

She’s the oldest sibling (of many) in her family. Her parents were extremely against her leaving home at first because the ocean is dangerous enough, who knows what kind of crazy shit happens up on the surface???? She’s doing fine tho, and now that she knows the Sending spell, she uses it to check in with her parents and younger siblings at least once a week

Some Melelani design/backstory notes!!! 

I’m still fleshing her out and tryin to give her some more detailed/complex motivations n stuff like that. I’m having lots of fun with it~ 

It’s nice to not have to do TOO much worldbuilding since DND has its own established ‘universe’ (unlike a lot of my OCs so far lol), and the plot develops itself thanks to our groups’ sessions. In the meantime, though, I still have some freedom to make my own interpretations when coming up with background stuff (especially with homebrew races like the Trichadons hehe).
