📣March 25, 2019, is the 108th Anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in New York’s Greenwich Village. This tragedy took the lives of 146 young immigrant garment workers and galvanized a reform movement to raise standards for workers. This incident has had great significance to this day because it highlights the inhumane working conditions to which industrial workers can be subjected. To many, its horrors epitomize the extremes of industrialism. ----------------------------------- #UnionStrong #Unions #TriangleShirtwaistFactory #TriangleShirtwaistFire #TriangleShirtwaist #LaborMovement #UniteHere #AFLCIO (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvcZuC5hOfR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=v9djumyfckvt

#Repost @gvshp_nyc (@get_repost) ・・・ On this day in 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire occurs, killing 146 mostly young female immigrant workers from Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, and surrounding communities. The disaster resulted from the owner locking the factory doors so workers could not take breaks, the fire being higher than fire engine ladders could reach, and a lack of fire escapes. The response to the fire led to dramatic and long overdue changes in labor, building, and fire codes, and is remembered annually. The building, now known as the Brown Building and owned by NYU, still stands at Washington Place and Greene Street, just east of Washington Square. With GVSHP’s support, in 2003 the building was landmarked. Commonly said to be the one incident that sparked the New Deal, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on March 25, 1911 was the deadliest industrial disaster in the history of New York City and the country. The fire caused the deaths of 146 garment workers – 123 women and 23 men – who died from the fire, smoke inhalation, or falling or jumping to their deaths. Most of the victims were recent Jewish and Italian immigrant women aged 16 to 23; of the victims whose ages are known, the oldest victim was Providenza Panno at 43, and the youngest were 14-year-olds Kate Leone and "Sara" Rosaria Maltese. The factory was located on the eighth, ninth and tenth floors of the Asch Building, at 23–29 Washington Place in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, now known as the Brown Building and part of New York University. Because the owners had locked the doors to the stairwells and exits – a then-common practice to prevent workers from taking unauthorized breaks and to reduce theft – many of the workers who could not escape from the burning building simply jumped from the high windows. The fire led to legislation requiring improved factory safety standards and helped spur the growth of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU), which fought for better working conditions for sweatshop workers.-- Friday, June 2, 2017 #FilmingNYC #Filming2017 #Day53 #TriangleShirtwaistFactory #TriangleShirtwaistFactoryFire #BerkshireWomensHistoryAssociation #Smithsonian #GreenwichVillage #IndustrialDisaster #ILGWU #InternationalLadiesGarmentWorkersUnion http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/uncovering-the-history-of-the-triangle-shirtwaist-fire-124701842/ https://2017berkshireconference.hofstra.edu/program/ (at Brown Building)

The Brown Building This ten-story neo-Renaissance building, designed by New York architect, John Woolley, was built in 1900-01 for Joseph J. Asch. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory occupied the buildings top three floors. In 1909, Triangle employees initiated the first large-scale strike of women workers in the country, but workers' demands for increased fire safety were not met. On March 25, 1911, a fire swept through the factory, claiming the lives of 146 garment workers. Prompted by the outrage of the reformers and labor unions, notably the ILGWU, New York State enacted legislation to safeguard the health and safety of workers. These laws subsequently serve as models for national labor and safety reforms. The building façade was largely on damaged by the fire. In 1929, Frederick Brown donated the building to New York University, Which named it in his honor, and has used it ever since as an academic building. Today is the anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. "Death & the Maiden’s own Sarah Chavez (Troop) shares the horrifying story of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in Manhattan, New York City on March 25, 1911. An entire nation grieved over the 148 deaths that occurred that day, so easily preventable. Their collective outrage changed U.S. labor laws and led to the adoption of fire safety measures. Many call it the day the New Deal was born. Women factory workers had previously protested their working conditions and demanded better wages. Apparently, women’s voices were not enough, they would pay, for the benefit of us all, with their lives."

ON MARCH 25,1911 A FIRE BROKE OUT AT THE TRIANGLE SHIRTWAIST COMPANY, LOCATED JUST ONE BLOCK EAST OF WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK. THE WORKERS TRIED TO ESCAPE BUT A CRITICAL EXIT WAS LOCKED. THEY RAN FOR THE FIRE ESCAPE. IT COLLAPSED, DROPPING THEM TO THEIR DEATHS. FIRE TRUCKS ARRIVED BUT THEIR LADDERS COULD NOT REACH TO THE 8TH, 9TH AND 10TH FLOOR WHERE THE FIRE RAGED. THE PUBLIC WATCHED IN HORROR AS 146 YOUNG WORKERS, MOST OF THEM IMMIGRANT WOMEN and GIRLS BURNED OR JUMPED TO THEIR DEATH. THERE WAS A TRIAL BUT THE OWNERS, LONG KNOWN FOR THEIR VEHEMENT ANTI-UNION STANCE WERE ACQUITED, THE FIRE GALVANIZED A MOVEMENT FOR SOCIAL ECONOMIC JUSTICE.
