📣March 25, 2019, is the 108th Anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in New York’s Greenwich Village. This tragedy took the lives of 146 young immigrant garment workers and galvanized a reform movement to raise standards for workers. This incident has had great significance to this day because it highlights the inhumane working conditions to which industrial workers can be subjected. To many, its horrors epitomize the extremes of industrialism. ----------------------------------- #UnionStrong #Unions #TriangleShirtwaistFactory #TriangleShirtwaistFire #TriangleShirtwaist #LaborMovement #UniteHere #AFLCIO (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvcZuC5hOfR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=v9djumyfckvt

Memorial ceremony for the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, Greenwich Village. FDNY put a ladder against the window where people leapt out in 1911. It was incredibly poignant, because at the time fire trucks couldn’t reach the 9th floor and the fire escape warped and collapsed in the fire. #triangleshirtwaistfactoryfire #triangleshirtwaistfactory #greenwichvillage #nyc #memorial #shirtwaist #monochrome #jj_blackandwhite #documentary #documentaryphotography #photojournalism #factory #remember #osha #triangleshirtwaist #fdny (at Brown Building (Manhattan))

#Repost @museumofcityny with @repostapp ・・・ #Onthisday in 1911, 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women, perished in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, one of the worst US workplace disasters since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. To many, its horrors epitomize the extremes of industrialism and we can credit its aftermath with many of the regulations that govern industry in America today. On April 11th factory owners Max Blanck and Isaac Harris were indicted by a grand jury on seven counts, including manslaughter in the 2nd degree under section 80 of the Labor Code, which mandated that doors should not be locked during working hours. On December 27, a jury acquitted Blanck and Harris of any wrong-doing since the task of the jurors had been to determine whether the owners knew that the doors were locked at the time of the fire. As a result of the fire, the American Society of Safety Engineers was founded in New York City on October 14, 1911. The last living survivor of the fire was Rose Freedman, who died in 2001 at the age of 107. She was two days away from her 18th birthday at the time of the fire. The fire and the resulting labor activism are covered in our #ActivistNY exhibition and stay tunes for more museum programs about labor activism coming soon. #NYCHistory #otd #history #laborhistory #triangleshirtwaist . . . Dear friend,
Assalamu Alaikum
I am glad you had an easy trip over here, ten days is not bad. Mine took 13 days. Praying or thinking about what we were about to come into helped me survive without a bathroom. What is your name if I do ask? It appears we are from the same country. There is a high possibility we could have stumbled upon each other’s families. I have been here a little longer than you so ill explain how things work here. They appreciate our culture here, they just would prefer if we showed it less. My sister and I agreed before we came here that we wouldn’t leave our culture. We are allowed to still pray five times a day. At the shirtwaist my sister works at they made he not wear her hijab. We had to make some adjustments, now she only wears it before and after work. Things are different here we have to compromise. As long as you promise yourself you wont forget who you are you will succeed here. Most of our people who come here are afraid to speak up. They are afraid to ask their bosses to pray. That’s how they forget. The Americans don’t make them forget, they forget on their own. They assume that the Americans want us to be like them when really it’s the opposite. They don’t want us like them at all. They would prefer if we adapted and stood out the way. Personally I am fine with that, when you get use to things you will be to. If you come to Manhattan, I would be happy to show you around, and look for work with you.
