Scrambled AU - part 2
Twins dimensions apart
Dipper’s pacing would create a huge trench in the living room with how hard his feet stomped on the ground. Too many questions fought in his mind for protagonism as the truth of alternate realities crashed with this crazy day for the nth time.
First, Grunkle Stan, or who he thought was his grunkle, lied to him and Mabel, stole toxic waste, turned a machine on that could destroy the world, and heck, he even knew about the author of the journals! Then, after Mabel didn’t press the button, which honestly was still something he had to come to terms with, they met a parallel Mabel and a parallel Pacifica Northwest.
Oh, also, there was this story that Grunkle Stan owed them because if what he did today and the debut of the adult alternate versions of her sister and her arch-enemy didn’t connect at all, he would scream until he passed out or lose his mind. Probably both.
“Ok, ok, who wants to start? Or who should start?”
“I’ll start first,” Stan couldn’t wait anymore. To be frank, he just wanted to get it out for the kids’ sake. 30 years of hard work, stress, hopes, for this result to slap him in the face. Maybe the universe had decided to have him born as a screw up much before he existed. Whether that was true or not, he found it impossible to keep going if the children hated him due to his cowardice and for abusing their trust from day one.
“Remember when you asked me if I knew the author, Dipper?” He blanched and nodded seconds later. “Welp, it’s true. I know him. He’s my brother, twin brother.”
“Twins?!” Dipper and Mabel exclaimed in unison.
“Yep, twins. Runs in the family. His name was Stanford. My name is Stanley Pines, and before you ask why I took his name, let me go back to 68 or close to that. It all started in Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey. My brother and I were the younger ones while your grandpa Shermie was the oldest. Stanford was born with 6 fingers on each hand—“
Dipper screamed like a fangirl. He was related to the author of the journals! STANFORD WAS—!!!! Then he perceived the amusement of everyone around except from Stan who glared annoyingly at him. “Sorry…”
“Anyway, Stanford was born with 6 fingers on each hand and a brain as big as Einstein’s. Pa said he got all the good stuff from the womb and the teachers believed he would go places, have it big. Me, on the other hand, was the ‘free spirit’ as Ma said. But that was just a kinder way to describe someone who would end up as a janitor or picking garbage from the streets.”
The mood soured quite a lot at the last sentence; Stan ignored it. They could disagree, protest, or give their own opinion but the truth was the truth. “We were thick as thieves, we’re going to sail around the world, got cute girls, that kind of stuff. We had found an old boat inside a cave of the beach and began repairing it. Of course, Ford’s huge brain showed him better careers than treasure hunting, so by the time we were 17, he was preparing himself to enter a fancy college with an invention of his that would knock everyone out. Me? You know, janitor, street sweeper, or scrapping barnacles from a taffy store.”
“Don’t say that, Grunkle Stan,” Mabel hugged tightly his waist. It hurt her deeply that he thought so low of himself when he had a lot of qualities despite his shortcomings. Stanley just laughed awkwardly and pat her head.
“I didn’t want him to leave me behind. Because of that, I stupidly broke his project and cost him a golden chance. He and Pa were furious, but Pa was worse. He kicked me out of the house and unless I made millions I wouldn’t be welcome back. Hardest 10 years of my life, if you ask me. Now, I didn’t know what Ford was doing before we met again but after a decade he sent me a postcard telling me to come. I thought we would talk and be brothers again.” His face hardened bitterly at the memories of his last fight. “Nope! Instead, he told me to be his errand boy and hide one of his journals. I exploded, he exploded, we fought, the portal was turned on accidentally, and the worst part… The worst part was that I was so mad at him that in the end, I pushed him into the portal. I didn’t mean to. I was clueless on what to do; then bam!, he was gone. I failed him again… That’s why I faked my death and took his name and house, I needed to get the machine working again to save him… But no, not even that worked, I guess.”
The story flooded over their minds in a violent fashion. All it made sense now. Many questions had been answered; however, the taste of that story was nothing but acid and bitter. Like swallowing ash from a battle lost, a battle you weren’t a part of.
“Why didn’t you tell us anything? I mean, we could’ve helped. We have faced lots of dangerous supernatural things. Monsters, ghosts, zombies!”
“It was my mistake, kid. I couldn’t trust anyone else or they might call the police, ruin it, or use it for their own gain. Ford’s life… After how I screwed up, he was my responsibility.”
Trust no one. Stanley also went through that route.
“You would do anything for your twin.” He remembered all the times Mabel had been in danger during their adventures or when one of them made a mistake in such a weird town like Gravity Falls. He unconsciously grabbed her hand just to assure himself that she was still there. “I get it now.”
“We’re sorry it didn’t work out, Grunkle Stan” Mabel hated not knowing what else to say. Such a tragedy left her speechless.
Suddenly, sniffing and sobs caught the quartet off guard. Alternate Mabel couldn’t hold it back anymore and broke into tears. Alternate Pacifica hugged her, rubbing circles on her back, and shushing tenderly.
Several minutes of crying later, and several used tissues too, she had enough composure to talk. “S-Sorry, just… It’s not fair. I wished Ford had returned instead of you meeting us. I also miss my twin a lot.”
“What exactly happened to you?” Dipper asked cautiously. Not that he didn’t trust her but if alternate realities existed, then the probabilities of him doing the same thing Stan did to Ford were 50/50 which would destroy him because sending Mabel to a certain death after a meaningless fight was something he would never have on his to-do list.
“I guess it’s my turn, uh?” Alternate Mabel laughed ruefully.
“Our turn, Mabes. Let’s not forget, I was involved in this mess way before than you.” Alternate Pacifica butted in.
You know, if he had been told today he’d meet an alternate version of Pacifica Northwest that traveled to other worlds with an adult version of his sister, he would have grimaced at the idea of such snobbish girl bonding with Mabel. Although, thanks to his adventure in the Northwest Mansion, his opinion of Pacifica was much better now.
“…How did you end up… You know… Going from one world to another?” Dipper mentally prayed to not hear Stan’s story with Mabel and him as the protagonists.
“Welp, it began in Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey,” Oh no… Here we go. “Dipper and I were just like you and your sister if I’m right, super close, having fun, teasing each other. We were also kind of babysitters of Tyrone.”
“Wait, we have a younger brother in your world?” Mabel squished her cheeks. That was so cute! “How old is he? Tyrone”
“He is 5 years younger. The most energetic guy you could ever meet. Wanted to be an Olympic athlete but became a football coach later. Still pretty neat.”
“Not fair! I wanted to be named Tyrone!” Mabel and Alternate Mabel just laughed, endeared by the boy’s complaint.
“While Dipper didn’t have 6 fingers, he was born with a birth mark in his forehead in the shape of the Ursa Minor. He was also super smart and curious; sometimes it got him into trouble but he didn’t mind. He loved to explore and discover new things but it was difficult when bullies pestered him. Thankfully, I was there! We were the best duo!”
“And nothing horrible happened between you, right? Like, no destroyed projects, broken dreams, shattered promises, none of that?” Mabel asked. Her heart cried for Grunkle Stan. All the pain he went through from being banished due to a mistake to losing his brother again and failing to save him. What hurt her more was the possibility of repeating history with Dipper. It terrified her.
Dipper shared her fears and heartache although the source of the horror he loathed to enact wasn’t unintentionally taking Mabel’s chances of a higher education away from her but to push her to a deadly dimension.
“I mean, if you count that h—“ Alternate Mabel elbowed her friend before continuing.
“We grew apart. Dipper got the attention of lots of great colleges. Meanwhile, I wanted to showcase my cute sweaters and even open a cat cafe. We promised each other to call, send letters, and visit each other though. It was hard for a while; I felt incomplete without my best friend but I could manage. My business was small but people liked it. Dipper went to Gravity Falls and settled there. Oh wait, there is the in-between. Paz?”
“Thanks for not forgetting about me,” the blonde joked. “So, my father wanted me to be the model/trophy wife that could bring the best prospect to his knees. Even mother agreed. I said ‘Fuck to that!’—“
“Dude, language.” Soos warned.
“It’s just one time, Soos. But to not get in trouble with your parents, please pretend that didn’t happen, kids.” Stan scratched the interior of his ear, while processing the story of the blonde.
“Anyway, I refused to be Miss Trophy Wife and enrolled in West Coast Tech.” Stan flinched. Lovely, WCT existed in other worlds! Ugh! “There I met Dipper and Candy.”
“Candy? As in Candy Chiu? Long black hair, oval-y glasses, likes to talk about human limbs improvements?”
“Yep!”
Mabel shook her brother like a maraca “Aaaaaaaaahhhhhh! I can’t believe it! Can you, Dipper? Candy also exists in their world!”
“What about me, dude? Do I exist there too?” Soos asked. What would his life be in a parallel dimension? Did he met his dad there? Have another job? Maybe he was a girl instead of a boy.
Stanley hated to admit it but Soos’ question infected that part of him that hoped for the teary reunion between him and Ford. What if in another reality he had managed to bring him back and they reconciled? Or what if he had failed but worse? What if Dipper had pressed the button before he could stop him? What if Mabel hadn’t trusted him enough to let go of the button? Or what if Dipper had never found the third journal or if the journal had been destroyed by the pass of time, its pages unrecognizable and half-eaten by bugs? Hell, what if in another world he hadn’t expected a warm reunion with Stanford when he asked him to come to Gravity Falls and just left with the journal as his brother wanted? Or what if he had just refused to go to Gravity Falls? Would his life be better then or just a hollow shell?
Stanley’s torturous ruminating time left little space to keep processing Pacifica’s part of the story. “Unfortunately, we don’t know if you exist where we’re come from. I mean, we haven’t been home for a long while. Anyway, meeting Candy was nice. I liked she treated me as a normal person and not a dive like many fools in my parents’ social parties. Dipper, on the other hand, we were kind of rivals. He was so studious, looking for answers, sometimes he rubbed that in my face. At first, we didn’t like each other that much but we grew fond of one another. After we graduated, I became a science teacher and also begun my own business to help little ones that were barely starting. You know, an admin couch. Years later, Dipper asked me to come to Gravity Falls and helped him uncover its mysteries. Pretty fun at first, if you don’t count the gnomes, of course.”
“Ugh, the gnomes! I get you, girl. They’re just the worst!” Soos, Dipper, and Stan shared bewildered glances. Mabel and Pacifica agreeing on something? Unbelievable!
“Ah, it seems that things went well then, maybe,” Dipper commented hopeful.
“Oh, that’s the thing,” Pacifica’s voice took on a tone that was too sweet and cheerful to be genuine which spelled bad news. “Going there was the worst mistake of my life!”
Yep, here it went the bad news. Alternate Mabel’s facial features hardened in such a way that wouldn’t be possible because describing his sister as a resentful, hostile person was the same as saying pigs could fly.
“Wh-What happened?” He dared to ask.
“I don’t know how but Dipper investigated stuff that should’ve been left alone from the start! Like, the portal? That was ‘his idea’,” The quarter gasped shocked and horrified as Pacifica mimic-quoted the last two words. “Imagine a dam that separated a giant, botomless river from your town. The fabric of reality is that dam; the portal would crack it and what was on the other side…” She shivered, her eyes haunted by the horrors of meeting Bill and the Nightmare Realm for the first time. “It was too dangerous. Uncovering the biggest mystery of Gravity Falls wasn’t worth sacrificing our whole dimension. But Dipper didn’t listen to me. He wanted answers no matter the cost. I… I’m no saint, I made lots of mistakes too, and this one was a big one but I had no choice.”
“What do you mean?” Mabel asked fearfully. The other Mabel lowly growled which increased the concerns of the little audience.
Pacifica closed his eyes shut, sighed heavily and… “I tried to destroy Dipper’s research and erase his mind.”

Another renegade-but-not-Chaos Kill Team operative down! The Trench Sweeper is mostly just a kitbash with a Palatine Enforcer from Necromunda but with a head swap, a shotgun from the old Cultist kit, and the shield moved to the other hand. Came out pretty good I think! 3 more to go.

Ok fun idea.
Monster Hunter and Kaiju No.8 crossover, where a mining company accidentally disturb an inner earth like world where Monsters roam and now are curious about the new world.
Before you count them out, just remember some of the smaller raptor wyverns are nearly bigger than most dinosaurs
Who said I was counting anything out? Especially considering kaiju come out of things like the Marina Trench in KN8 akin to Pacific Rim. There's also weird places like the Labyrinth in Monster Hunter Stories post game. Nevermind the stuff I heard from Wilds.
Our mining company accidentally uncovered one of those mysterious gateways connecting both worlds. It had been sealed away for a long time under unknown circumstances. Though it appears to be natural than intentional.
Actually I have something funnier. It's the Monster Sweepers who accidentally uncover it during a clean up. Their current kaiju corpses is being super difficult to get out and they end up blasting a hole to the entrance.
Plus the idea of them running into a monster hunter on a hunt sounds fucking funny.

i hate working at this fucking science lab. my boss doesn't know that a sweeper is different from a swiffer and doesn't know how brooms work. I am trying to clean a whole warehouse that hasn't been mopped in 20 years with a ancient, frayed plastic broom. I am expected to know which unlabled chemical bottles and machines to do stuff with and which to just leave alone and sweep around. The only thing I've got for mopping is the cap remnants of a bottle of palmolive dish soap and some comet powder. I am so fucked man. AND! I keep getting gold rush era diseases from this goddamn place. one time I got trench dick from a polluted marsh sample from maryland, and another time recently I ended up catching dysentary. not clear how. but, I got a 401k and I can listen to podcasts and i come in late so it's fine.

2024 Book Review #37 – Montress Volume Six: The Vow by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda
I have been very slowly rereading Monstress at the rate of a volume a month since January. Having finished this one, I am very nearly caught up with where I was when I fell off of keeping up with the series as it released. I can now kind of remember why, honestly – this was not at all a bad set of issues, but the grander plot feels both mired and meandering, and increasingly...comic-bookey, I guess? Thankfully, the actual core of the volume is familial and romantic melodrama, and that part of it is absolutely incredible.
Just about the entire volume is set amid the mostly-ruined city of Ravenna. Maika, the love of her life (who was in fact a Dusk Court noble assigned to mind her and eventually abduct her. Which, awful assignment – they were slaves! Getting used as disposable mine-sweepers in trench warfare!), her aunt (married to that love-of-Maika’s life for court politics reasons, has separately also tried to have Maika abducted after killing and interrogating the ghosts of her fellow former slaves), and eventually her grandmother (decadent living god who seems to mostly think of mortals as interesting toys). This goes roughly as well as you would expect it would, even before the human army still besieging the city shells it with a gas that induces cannibalistic madness and destroys the city entirely.
The relationships, the melodrama, and the messy personal relationships and revelations are the meat of the volume as said they do land (even if the character of the Wolf Queen is still something of a cipher). The book has been teasing a reunion between Maika and Tuya for basically its entire run, so it’s good to see them finally cash the cheque – and it even works! Having Maika literally walk in on her sleeping with her aunt is a bit cartoonishly soap-opera, but the book sells all the emotional reactions and when they do talk the actual dynamic feels both natural and believable. It lasts for all of one conversation, but still! Does an incredible amount to sell the relationship.
The climax of the issue is how that reunion turns out. I have previously joked that Ren is ‘the cat that betrays everyone’ but tbh he usually has second thoughts or tries to make up for it after the fact. Tuya burns even more of her bridges with even more furious intensity. Being honest, I probably would have preferred the book spend more time on the reunion and less on Maika-in-a-coma ominously monologuing things we’ve mostly already heard, but the actual moment of betrayal was easily the strongest single moment of the volume, and one of the strongest of the comic overall.
Maika’s aunt and grandmother are...less compelling characters. In both cases the character design feels like it’s doing most of the heavy lifting. Which is kind of fair, really – it’s incredible character design! But after 36 issues and masses of time on the page each, the Warlord only barely has more than two dimensions, and the Wolf Queen falls far short of even that and tries to make up with ominous foreshadowing and vague exposition. The Warlord is at least fun because of it slowly bleeding through that she kind of sucks at this (being a ruthless strategist-warlord defending her people from genocidal colonialism no matter the cost) and only really has the job because she’s a nepo baby and no one else in the Dawn Court would be obviously better, and also because she gave Maika to be the most insufferably and hilariously smug I’ve ever seen a character illustrated to be. So y’know not really any complaints there.
If Maika’s character drama all worked, Zinn’s arc and confrontation with the Wolf-Queen left me much cooler. Zinn as a character can be very fun, but there’s only so many different layers of repressed memories and weighty, tormented relationships with every metaphysically important character you can give them before it all starts blurring together. And likewise only so much tormented exposition about antediluvian wars between gods I can bring myself to care about.
Which is the real issue I have, honestly. The story begins feeling, if undeniably fantastical, a grounded sort of fantastical. It wore its historical inspirations on its sleeve, and borrowed the logic and stakes of the period as well. That’s still there, but it increasingly feels like set dressing in the background of what the story actually cares about. Battles decided by gods and warlords in power armor, not armies. Politics a matter of nested conspiracies, not social forces or mass organizations or even open court intrigue. The whole telos of the universe the aftershocks of wars among the ancients and the schemes and genius of a few long-dead heroes. It grates. Especially when most of a whole issue is dedicated to what are functionally superhero duels.
Though, having said that, the gas the federation used really is the perfect fascist weapon. Something that turns arcanics into exactly the cannibalistic, rabid, self-destructive demons all their propaganda says they are – yeah that’s exactly the sort of superweapon they would absolutely love.
All in all, a volume that contains multitudes. Amazing soap opera, at least.

First up- I LOVE your analysis and lore and everything, and as the number one Geeta lover you are literally one of the only people who I would see write "Geeta team edit" and actually keep reading. Most of these are done in such bad faith, so thank you for just not. I DO however have a few thoughts.
I think Espathra as a lead is actually really good. The opportunist ability stops players from boosting at the start of the battle, lumina crash is an absolute menace, and espathra's association with being beautiful and viscous I think really fits the overall theme of Geeta and her team. I would love to see espathra running stored power, but that's a nitpick.
Armarouge/ceruledge are absolutely amazing picks and definitely should have been on the team, 100% agree. I think ceruledge would again fit her overall look and theme better.
Gholdengo...like I fully get what your saying about it being rare to find and a good choice in that sense, but I really think champion teams should show off their personality first and foremost. And gholdengo is so gotdamn silly, I just can't see it working with her team/vibe.
I actually really like gogoat tbh. Ik it's not a Paldean Mon but idk the rest of the team around it just really pulls it in thematically. Theres not a lot of reasoning here I just like it lmao. Same with veluza tbh, although again I think this one fits her theme really well. Also I despise rabsca. Personal opinion on that one lmao
10000000% agree about putting glimmora with Geeta in the same way as Nemona and pawmot, absolutely! And also making glimmora way harder to find in game, yes! I admit I did like finding out about the connection between Geeta and area zero after the fact, purely because it keeps Geeta relevant in the post game lmao. It's just nice to have her continue to be mentioned even while off screen and in theory done story-wise. I will say that glimmora can hit like a special truck, and I personally love using it as an ace/sweeper, but again thats my preference. I find it's actually kinda wasted potential using it for just set up. The ability is honestly more of a nice bonus than something to hinge the whole strat on.
That's all! Again, love your analysis sososo much! I just read it and got thoughts and wanted to share because I am constantly rotating Geeta and her team in my mind. And also like. The aesthetic and the theme are sooooo important
hiii thank u!! Talking about Geeta in any capacity is a goddamn nightmare bc there's like a 50% chance that if you don't have a giant blocklist someone is gonna come into ur notifs like "well um Actually" about something. We in the trenches out here. Anyway
Espathra: So a few people have pointed out that Espathra fits her really well either as an lead or just for the vibes and after thinking about it I'm inclined to agree. I didn't include it at first because it's Tulip's Paldea ace and I hate repeats but tbh? Tulip can find another psychic type. Geeta gets the bird now. Maybe that's why Tulip hates her so much
Celruedge: So I uh. Actually made a slight mistake in my original post. I meant to update it so she always has a Celruedge bc Mela has an Amarogue and then forgot to update the post before it posted so. Oops! Anyway yeah agreed Celruedge is cooler for this
Gholdengo: Imma be real with you I hate this thing. I included it on her team because no one else uses it and it would be a fun surprise but also I hate it. It doesn't fit her vibes whatsoever and I just wanna know Why it looks like that. A debateably necessary evil
The only reason Gogoat isn't in this team is bc I made a rule that they had to be exclusively Paldean pokemon. I am her Gogoat's number one fan I am ride or die for that thing. Giving him a little kiss on the forehead. I'm a Geeta's Gogoat apologist
I don't know anything about comp but I have friends that do and they mentioned Glimmora being her ace would require a lot of teambuilding around it which I don't know how to do nor do I want to. Lead or ace or whatever-- it's her little guy
Thanks for the ask!!

good news. there are many pump action firearms in existence. one of the most iconic shotguns in history is the Winchester 1897, which saw extensive use for World War 1 and 2 by allied troops. one of the most interesting things about this shotgun is the lack of a trigger disconnector. what this means is, if you just hold the trigger down and keep pumping the shotgun, the shots keep on coming. you jack off the gun. this is commonly referred as chain fire. in result of this feature, this shotgun gained the nickname of "Trench Sweeper."
i can't even make a joke about this, because like. you literally jack off the gun. like. wow. nothing i can come up with is funnier than this.
